Why I think that Singapenney is NOT a feminist song.

Singapenney is a cult song from the movie Bigil that is lauded EVERYWHERE for being feminist.

But I disagree. Strongly. To be truly feminist, you need to accept all kinds of women. Women who own their sexuality, women who do not want a sex life, women who are trans, every sort of woman. 

Why do I disagree? Because of this line.

“Prasavathin Valiyaithaanda, Pirantha Akkini Siragae,” 

Translation: Phoenix born to bear the pain of pregnancy (birthing a baby).

NOPE. NOPE. There are women who can choose NEVER to have a baby. I consider myself one of them. I am a woman. I am woman. I can choose to be single, that does not invalidate my womanhood, nor would such a choice erode anyone else’s womanhood. 

No woman is born to bear the pain of birthing a baby, unless she chooses to. If she so chooses, more power to her. If she chooses not to marry/have a baby, more power to her anyway. Both the women, in these two scenarios are women. Their femininity, if they want it, is valid. 

Another line that irked me in the video was this: Oru aan ooda vetrikku pinaal oru ponnu irupanu solluvanga, anaal oru pen ooda vetrikku pinnal, adhuvum oru kalyanam aana pennoda vetrikku pinnal, kandipa oru aan irupaan.

Translation: They say that a woman is behind every man’s success, but behind every successful woman, that too especially if she is married, there is a definitely a man.

I think that this is a very gross generalisation. Neither is a woman behind every successful man, nor is a man behind every successful woman. We need ourselves to achieve our success, the gender of the people who help us should not matter, let it be male or female. Why care? It’s the person who matters! Their gender makes no difference in the help we get from them! Or, at least, ideally, it should not.

But this was (comparatively) a minor irritant. 

The first one is something that makes my blood boil. Even in this era, a woman has to be a mother to be considered a woman? What the hell? A girl, a woman, can choose to be a daughter all her life, that doesn’t make her any less of a woman. In fact, I’d say that if she is happy, then she may live any role she chooses, why is there a restriction? A man can be a son all his life, can a woman not be a daughter, a proud daughter, all of her life?

I think that we need to accept and normalise both the presence and absence of sexuality, only then can we make inroads into understanding and accepting ourselves, gender roles notwithstanding, i.e: if the first issue is worked on, only then can the second be erased.

An open letter to the bride,

Dear Priya, I hope you will be reading this letter or it will reach you somehow. I must say that I admire your strength in rejecting the groom with that pressure from your family members. What you did is a great justice to yourself (regardless of what others day) and it is the correct decision. Please don’t even doubt your decision to reject the groom and you don’t have to feel guilty about it.

Let me tell you how correct is your decision in today’s context for a girl. The moment you decided to reject that groom whom you don’t like, you have literally decided what is the best for you. That is you taking control of your life in your hands. You get to decide what is good and bad for you. And certainly marrying a guy that you don’t like is not a good decision. You don’t have to pretend your whole life that you like him, you don’t have to force yourself to have sex or kids with a guy you never liked. Shortly, you now don’t have wonder –what if I have rejected him? So many Indian girls out there were married forcefully to guys they don’t like and can only dream of the life that they wanted to have. Instead of being just another girl who was forced into a vicious cycle called arranged marriage, you stood up for yourself and made a choice. Secretly, I am sure many Indian girls have wished they have had the guts to do what you did.

Can you imagine a life where you get married to the groom but you continue to yearn for the other guy? Then, what would have happened if the groom found out that you have loved before marriage? Another potential problem which the groom could have used to abuse you, be suspicious or give you mental torture (knowing how insecure Indian guys are). You have avoided all that by rejecting him.  

Many Indian guys are so sore that they say you deserve it when the guy you loved didn’t turn up. From my point of view, it is a good experience for you as now you know what type of guy he is. You truly loved him and willing to take care his kids after standing up to your parents. Your truly loved him but he is unlucky to not to realize that. Don’t worry dear – you will get a better partner who deserves your love. You know how hypocrite Indian guys are – they blame women don’t love enough but they can’t see how much you have loved the other guy. Typical balti adikiren guys who says things to suit them…so if you marry the groom and dump that guy who love, will you be hailed as a good woman? By now, you probably realized that nothing that a woman does is right in the eyes of the Indian society.

Take this time and do what you want in life. From now on, you will make more life changing decisions as you are in full control of your life. Go study or work hard to have a career progession. I am sure you have also gained the confidence, strength and power to do what is the best for you. Put yourself first, prioritize yourself and make decisions in how you will live your life. That is the best prize you can give yourself. Enough with culture, tradition and what the society thinks. You don’t have to sacrifice your live for others. Live your life for yourself. We have movies portraying women as Singapenney but ONLY if your actions are approved by men and society. We Indians glorify women only in movies and songs but not real life. An Indian woman rejects a groom and she is vilified. She doesn’t have a right to make decisions on who she should marry? Enough with the hypocritical attitude. This advice goes to all Indian women out there. The moment you break the shackles of tradition, culture and society to make decisions for yourself – that’s when you are free and you are a Singapen. That is how it should be ……
