Turning Point

Spoilers ahead. I really like specifically when Dagur helped Heather because a boring option would've been making him turn good right after she was captured. This isn't what happened, though. According to Dagur, he changed when he was on the island after getting shipwrecked and I think that makes his change (as well as what he did before leaving) more interesting. Dagur didn't save Heather because he was a hero. He did because she's his sister and he's consistently cared about her during the entire show, whether he was good or bad. It even messed up his own plans to do so. Dagur wanted to get close enough to get Grimborns to learn about the Dragon Eye, steal it, and kill them in horrible was. By freeing Heather, he revealed himself as a traitor. That didn't leave him with many options. From what we've seen, the bulk of the Vikings there are Hunters, so Dagur didn't have his Berserkers there to help with the execution of his plan. That only leaves two options: stay and get killed or escape and fail at your mission. Still, that didn't matter to him because of it being part of saving Heather's life.

Dagur does admit that it's because of Heather that he turned good, but it was later. What he told Hiccup about his reasoning fascinated me. He pointed out how only caring about yourself basically means that nothing matters. Dagur's probably spent most of his life being disliked by people. So, crashing on the island would force him to confront the reality that not only would his death result in no one being sad, the majority would most likely be happy. Yet, there's one worse thing to him and that's dying, leaving Heather without any family left.

I wish we had gotten to see him make this change, but I can understand the idea of having Hiccup find him when he's reformed. I just think it really would have been interesting to watch Dagur go from wanting nothing more than gold, revenge, and power to wanting to make amends and genuinely be a better person. He already protected his sister, but that wasn't enough anymore. Just caring about her was insufficient. Dagur wanted to show his care by also protecting the people she loved and working to become a better person so that being his sister wouldn't seem like a curse.

More headcanons and fun facts for TNG AU.

Gothi left the A Team after dying from a fight with dragon hunters, her purple Gronckle disappeared soon after and her flock of terrible terrors are now just wandering Berk trying to find a new trainer.

Spitelout left the A Team after that same fight where his Nadder, Kingstail, was badly hurt and couldn’t fly as well as he used to.

Gustav sold Fanghook to dragon fighting, now Gustav himself has become a bigger threat without his dragon, running around and biting other hunters to keep them in their place.

Gustav does wear a muzzle.

Asdis is going to be the future queen of Defenders of the Wing and Chieftess of Berserker island, this is going to add on a lot of stress to her where she barely has any free time. This in turn will cause Halvor to try and help his sister out as much as possible, trying to lessen her load with everything going on in Berserker Island.

In this AU, Viggo was also there at the chief counsel when Drago destroyed the whole place and the chiefs inside. He was there because his parents were there and he was getting some experience before he became chief. His parents died to an armored Rumblehorn and Viggo was barely able to escape with his life.

Later, Drago went out and destroyed the entire Grimborn village, the only reason why Viggo and Ryker are still around was because their grandfather lead them both deep into the forest to hide out the initial attacks.

After everything that’s happened in the events of Race to the Edge, Viggo has terrible nightmares and tries to avoid sleep as much as possible. He also avoids volcanos as best he can as the intrusive thoughts will tell him to finish the job.

Astrid and Snotlout became almost best friends after they both married their husbands, but that doesn’t stop Astrid from occasionally smacking Snotlout with a chair every time he’s acting a fool.

Gobber has adopted many kids and young dragons, he’s a single father of many and all the gay dragons are all his friends.

Garf becomes mates with a female Deathsong named Harmony, they are very much happy together.

Out of all the original dragon riders, Harmony only likes Astrid and doesn’t try to shoot her on sight.

Meatlug adopts two baby Nadders whose mother died.

Snotlout has an amazing singing voice and will constantly serenade to Tuffnut. He did it once in the middle of the night and got a barrel thrown at him by Ruffnut.

Speaking of Tuffnut, he started suffering with Imposter Syndrome after Gruffnut impersonated him so perfectly that he’s scared of it happening again, so he and Snotlout have come up with a code word that they could tell each other every once in a while to show that it’s still Tuffnut (the word is “Tears”). So now, if Gruffnut does impersonate Tuffnut again and comes across Snotlout, if the code is said and Gruffnut doesn’t respond correctly, his schemes will be foiled instantly.

Puffnut was born on Loki Day, making her birthday April 1st. With this as a point to start, Ethan was born 9 months earlier on July 8th, making Fluffnut being born July 1st.

Dante’s birthday is November 15th.

Runa never blinks when people are watching, it freaks everyone out except Halvor, because he knows stuff no one else does.

During a visit to Wingmaiden island, Snotlout got the chance to name a baby Razorwhip, little guy’s name is Winglout.

So, I need a little break from writing about Viggo. So, I thought why not go into my OC’s background and write about her and her dragons goes from oldest to young of her dragons. This is her oldest dragon and her first tame as a young child. She named it Bubu since she had no brothers or sisters Bubu was like family to her. She was raised amongst dragon hunters, but she was always fascinated by them. She kept her dragon and secret until she was 14 and her family disowned her. When this happened, she took off with Bubu and kept flying til she found a small island. She set up camp and stay there for many years learning more and more about dragons. She found she had a natural talent for taming and soothing all types of dragons. Bubu was her most loyal dragon and was sadly stuck down in battle when she tried to return home to make peace with her family. When she found him dead, she went on a rampage burning everything to the group with the help of the next dragon she had tamed. (This will be the next post) She loved him and when the fire settled, she made the island her own making a huge statue and memorial for him honoring him as family. She would continue this will all dragons she tamed. Even tho she loved dragons this didn’t make much of a profit, so she decided to go to the northern markets in search of work where she met Trader Johann. He had originally hired her to help with moved crated and boxes but we they encountered a Changeiwng and she was able to sooth it he knew she was different. After many moons he had approached her about this

”So pray tell my fair lady…but how does one have such an ability to SOOOTH such monstrous creatures?” He asks being as dramatic as normal for him. She chuckles and replies

“I’ve always been about to do this, back at home, I have tamed quite a number of dragons most have deem untamable and aggressive.” She smiles constantly.

“But yet you still have no issues killing them? One would only think that your passion might get in the way of well…business?” Johann inquired. She shrugged and replied,

“Business is business…taming dragons doesn’t exactly put food on the table as long as MY dragons are safe and sound, I don’t really care about the others as much.” She says and she takes a bite out of the mutton she cooked for them. Johann puzzled til he sighed and stated,

“My dear I wouldn’t want to end such a wonderful path with have together but I may be able to help get you a better job with a…working partner of mine.” She straightened up with curiosity

“Keep going Johann.”

He smiles seeing her interest peaked. “His name is Viggo Grimborn one of the best dragon hunter groups known to the Archipelago. He is looking for a new trainer for new recruits. I think you would be good fit for this position.” Johann says openly.

She thinks it over smiles and nods “What do I need to do? Do I need to get his attention or can you just kinda…get me in?” She says slyly.

Johann thinks is over “I suppose I could put in a good word, if one might be so kind…as to…give me the recipes that you’ve learn.” Johann says with a sheepish smile.

“Johann, I love and DESPISE you! I will have someone at the markets make a copy of my recipe book.” She chuckles and hugs Johann. Johann knew that Katie was a good fit for Viggo. Both business and not.

Okay my dumbass at it again with a new au~

(be warned, a buncha word vomit coming)

So! In this au Valka hasn't been taken away, but Stoick died at the hands of pirates when he was sailing back from the great gathering of chieftains when Hiccup was a baby. Valka suspects foul play and it's confirmed when, during Berk's panic at being without a chief and the uproar on who should take his place since hiccup was firstly a runt and not of age, they were raided by rival tribes. Valka did the best she could to fight, but it was no use, with their tribe outnumbered and her son at risk, she gathered her people to the boats and sailed from their homeland at the dead of night. The Hairy Hooligans escaped with less than half of the tribe.

With no tribe she could trust, Valka took what's left of her tribe far far away, to the near outskirts of the archipelago, where no one could find them. The Hairy Hooligans mourned their lost home as they tried to rebuild their tribe. Valka was determined to strengthen her tribe, if not for vengeance for her late husband, then for her son's future. She was determined to make him chief, just as Stoick always believed he would. But first, she'll build the foundations.

She helped the tribe rebuild, laboured with her tribesmen in ploughing the fields and hauled lumber for their homes. It took years for the wounds to heal. Eventually, she brought up her plan to try and live in peace with the dragons and was met with outrage. With their tribe so few in numbers, why should they try and live with the beasts that could one day turned their backs on them and eat their children?

While Valka fought that uphill battle, she was also teaching Hiccup the ways of chiefdom. Hiccup's mind was sharpened, his wit was honed and cunning was nurtured. While the tribe scrutinized his gangly and thin frame Valka made sure they knew his intelligence was incomparable, he would one day lead their tribe to greatness as they once were. Hiccup was born with the knee-buckling weight of the tribes' expectation on his shoulders.

And he delivered.

Just a year short of adulthood, he had befriended and rode on the back of the most fearsome dragon in the archipelago. He rode the beast and fought a leviathan, saving the tribe and dragons from the oppressive rule of the Red Death. He fulfilled his mother's dream of the tribe and dragons living in harmony.

The following years after, he became the first Viking in years to venture from the island with the gang. He came back with faithful allies, the Defenders of the Wing from the west, the Bog-Burglars in their neighbouring east, and the Wing-Maidens from the south, that would help the tribe flourish. He then took the mantle of chief at 18, the youngest in the history of Haddock chiefdom. Berk thrived under his leadership for years

Then, one day, an armada came to their shores.

On the other end of the Archipelago, the Berserker Tribe came on hard times. Though the tribe known for their fierce warriors and battle prowess, they were plagued with misfortunes. They were surrounded by hostile tribes, with the threat of the Outcast tribe keeping them on their toes, and then there were the dragons that attacked their fishermen and circled their seas like vultures. Dagur took the mantle of chief, brutally and bloody to show his tribe his strength and right to lead them. He sent his sister out on a quest to bring back something- anything- to help their tribe, while he did his best to defend Berserker Isle. By the sixth month, Heather disappeared without a trace. During that time, Dagur was grief-stricken thinking his sister was dead and had thrown himself into strengthening his armada and making a name for himself. He became known as Dagur the Deranged, and he made sure that name was uttered with fear.

After nearly two years, Heather came back. And she brought back with her a dragon and a name.

Viggo Grimborn.

After a tearful reunion, she told him about the man, the answer to their problems. So they sailed to the elusive Viggo Grimborn and made an agreement. Viggo would take care of the dragons and his enemy tribes in exchange for access to his armada. With no other choice, Dagur agreed.

It didn't take long for the Outcasts to abandon their island and their seas to be free of dragons. Their people were happy, rations became a thing of the past as their food became plentiful- for the first time in a long time, Dagur could breathe.

Then, Viggo summoned them. The air became stifling.

He gave them a mission. Rumours of a tribe of dragon riders reached the ears of the Dragon Hunter chief, and their famed leader, riding the unholy offspring of lightning and death, a Night Fury. He gave them the order of finding the tribe, to earn their trust and be his man on the inside.

Dagur brought his armada and set sail. After nearly a year of searching, following leads after leads, dead ends after dead ends, he finally found the mysterious tribe of dragon riders. He was met with suspicion and hostility among the tribe, but their chief was... well, to put it bluntly, a weirdo.

Hiccup's friends would agree with that assessment, but the tribe's chief would digress. He'd more likely describe it as smitten, complete with a long sigh and a silly love-sick smile on his face. You see, the years of adventure and daring missions left Hiccup yearning. At twenty-three, Hiccup wanted to step into that next stage in life with that special someone (Astrid knocked him in the head after he shared that to her in the cheesiest way possible).

And blessed be the gods for they delivered.

Hiccup's eyes were first drawn to his hair, a shock of bright hair that was stark amongst his army of men. Then, it was his muscles ('of course it was' Astrid would say with a roll of her eyes), by the gods those arms.

And so, Hiccup began his mission to woo the Berserker chief.

For the Hooligan tribe, they had front row seats to their chief's disastrous and embarrassing display of flirting. His attempts to compliment the foreign chief was unintentionally backhanded and clumsy. It was truly pathetic. Still, Hiccup was smitten, and he was determined to share his life with him (before the season's change if he had his way- he always dreamed of a winter wedding).

But Valka was on guard. She smiled indulgently at Hiccup's love-sick tales and daydreams, but she knew not to trust them. She knew of the Berserker tribe- Oswald was a face she knew among those who slew her tribesmen that day. He held her eyes as he stabbed her husband's father through his heart. She remembered those eyes. The same eyes that the Berserker chief and his sister carried. Her years of hard work will not be undone. Most of all, she will not let him break her son's heart.

Dagur saw the Haddock matriarch's distrustful stares and knew he had his work cut out for him. But would not fail. He cannot.

His tribe's lives were on the line.

There is this really old soviet musical-cartoon (1979, I believe) called 'The fairytale of the flying ship', which aligns to RTTE comedic vibe and Dagcup arranged marriage plots SO PERFECTLY

So, don't you say I haven't warned you, here's the plot! (quite detailed and long)

All is starting with a sight of an evidently very small town with king's palace towering above it. As the perspective is closening, we can see a court man trying to eavesdrop the king's quarrel with his only daughter. Here we discover that the man's name is Polkan, the princess's - Zabava and her father insists that she should marry Polkan. The girl keeps declining, so all ends with the king slamming doors of Zabava's room open and trying (with no luck) to leave gracefully.

Zabava is left alone and sings a song how heirs of a throne have no right to think of love and must always think of a throne in the first place in order to please their royal parents. The song from melancholic tones evolves to anger, while princess starts taking her frustration out on the fine dishes that were meant to be her dowry for arranged marriage with Polkan. She fails to destroy it all properly, though, as her anger fades with a familiar face popping out of thin air right in front of her.

And there the new character enters the stage: a young chimney sweep named Vanya. He's deeply in love with Zabava (and the feeling is mutual) to the point where sees no possible dangers to himself while expressing his feelings. He's willing to do whatever it takes to snap his dear out of her prison, and after the idea to build a flying ship for them crosses his mind, Zabava makes an official announcement: she shall marry the man who will construct a flying ship. Her father, of course, wants Polkan to construct it, while Polkan himself intends to purchase said ship.

Cartoon goes on with a group song revealing each character's priorities: Zabava and Vanya want a cozy family nest together, the king wants Zabava to get married successfully to a rich man (Polkan, yes) and always have a prosperous household, and Polkan is eager to become more rich, more powerful and gain the title by marrying Zabava.

While everyone is singing from their rooms in the palace, Vanya keeps forging ahead a forest, at the end finding himself beside the lake (or maybe more of a swamp). This site is occypied with the merman-like water spirit. He sings to visitor a song about his miserable and lonely life, but while ranting about his misfortunes and frogs along with leeches being his only friends, the spirit agrees to help Vanya. Firstly, he gives the lad a set of magical equipment able to make anything provided that you can handle it's power (where Vanya succeeds, with a very peculiar ways of using the equipment, but who are we to judge him). Secondly, the talkative spirit gives him (literally) a path to his sisters who know the magic words for flying, for, now when the ship is finished, Vanya still has to get it onto the air.

Vanya encounters water spirit's sisters, Babka-Yoshka's, who are clearly having the time of their lives, singing ditties and dancing merrily accompanied by accordion. Then a flock of migrating birds passes by, and out of pure solidarity the ladies' ansamble gets in their stupa's and whooshes away at once, saying the treasured words in unison.

Now, it seems, Vanya could return to the town as a winner and claim Zabava's hand rightfully, but there's no way! He is captured by Polkan and his men and very soon is descending to the very bottom of a lake. Whereas Polkan, who didn't care to learn more than a half of magical flying words from Vanya, takes the ship to himself and goes to Zabava, all to pretend that he'd completed her demand.

As Polkan knows only a piece of a spell, the flying ship with the king aboard soars up for a while and simply gets stuck between the earth and the sky without the second part of a spell said to it. Polkan makes the king give up his crown and, symbolically, a throne in exchange for rescue, afterwards making his way back to Zabava's door to plead her to let him in. It is in this very moment when Vanya appears out of the chimney, saved just in time by the fellow water spirit. The loving couple makes their way on the roof, then through the chimney where Zabava loses her fancy gown and tiara, leaving behind her royal status, and finally they escape Polkan and get aboard their ship.

All ends with Zabava and Vanya, happily flying away, intertwined in a tender embrace.

Deleted Scene??

This is something I noticed and am very curious if anyone else has too. Spoiler alert for RTTE. Is it just me or did both Grimborn brothers just randomly start hating Dagur? I think the first interaction between Dagur and Ryker was in "Night of the Hunters'" after the Riders tried to escape and it failed. Dagur makes a suggestion to kill one via throwing them off the side, Heather counters that to say they should spare them for Viggo, and Ryker just immediately implies that Dagur's an idiot. It's almost funny how unnecessary this was. It's also amusing to me how Ryker OF ALL PEOPLE would say, "Know who got the brains in your family." Excuse me, good sir, but you are not one to talk when you're taking orders from your baby brother, THE Viggo Grimborn. Hypocrisy aside, what Dagur said wasn't even foolish and would have actually been a smart move if they wanted to discourage the others. The Berkians would have been absolutely devastated if one of them had died that day. Instead, Ryker goes with Heather's plan, insults Dagur, and hits him on the back.

Just about every scene with them is like this. Heather even defends Dagur when Ryker complains in a later episode after seeing that not all the Riders left the Edge like Dagur wanted them to. In the same one, Ryker and Dagur find out that there were deserters. Dagur asks who and is upset when he learns that a Grimborn cousin turned traitor. Makes sense. He hates traitors and is a family-oriented person. This would shock him and he's always been an outspoken guy. When Ryker starts growling at him, he backs off and decides to suggest a new plan to make up for the losses. End of the tension, yes? The thing that was upsetting Ryker has stopped and now he can be calm again? Nope. He starts choking Dagur. Again, it nearly makes me laugh because it really comes out of nowhere. Why is he even mad at this point? Was Ryker that offended about Dagur talking about his turncoat cousin that even when he stopped, he still needed to be choked out?

This isn't even the last thing he does! In "Maces and Talons Part 2," Ryker threatens Dagur in case he thinks about hurting Viggo. I find this very amusing since this is the same man who had recommended killing Heather and is part of the idea to have Dagur imprison his own sister. But family means sooo much...when that family is Ryker's.

Viggo has way less scenes with Dagur, but they still manage to all be very passive aggressive. In his first line directed to Dagur alone, he practically calls him an imbecile, wondering if there are "any brains under all those scars and tattoos." Note to self: don't play a game with Viggo because you'll get your feelings hurt. Since we came in on the end, maybe Dagur really was just taking that long, but I also feel like his level of patience wouldn't have let him stand there for minutes on end without doing anything besides figuring out his next play. Since we've also seen Viggo insult Ryker's intelligence, I think this one is just because that's who he is and he will never respect someone he thinks is more of a physical threat. He's now making me think of that "mean nerd" trope in some stories where they try to bully the jocks by making them feel less than in other ways.

Viggo does take this a little further and have his first snappy scene too. This, of course, is directed at Dagur because why wouldn't it be? Not to sound like a broken record, but this doesn't feel necessary either. Yes, Dagur was being snarky, but Viggo also asked a pretty obvious question. Dagur would obviously know that the dragons were free if they're flying right above them. He just wanted to contribute to the plan since he is a chief in his own right. Not wanting to listen is one thing and I could understand Viggo not wanting to use someone else's ideas, but to say in a matter of words, "Fool, you exist to follow orders. Don't think. I'll do that for you," is a little bit of an overreaction.

The dramatic irony of this is how their hatred was warranted, but they didn't know it. Dagur really never was on their side and was planning to kill them, so unless a deleted scene happened where he just cursed out everyone with Grimborn blood, maybe they intuitively knew something was off with him. If neither of those happened, I think the Grimmies just decide to pick on the new guy and see how long it would take for him to turn on them.

I wrote this because I wanted Dagur to carry through with his threat of killing Ryker in the way he described. This takes place in the Race to the Edge episode Maces and Talons but diverges from canon. This is also on AO3.

Dagur told him. He fucking told him.

 “If you touch one hair on my sister’s head, I’ll run you through and wear your rib cage as my battle armor,” Dagur had told Ryker.

 And then Ryker had the audacity to grab Heather’s arm at the bicep.

 Heather had quickly pulled away from Ryker, but Ryker’s action had Dagur unsheathing his sword, quickly.

 “Hey, Rykie!” Dagur exclaimed.

 Ryker turned to look at him and before Ryker had time to do anything, Dagur stabbed him as hard as he could with his sword, into the man’s chest, hearing his sternum crack loudly.

 Ryker let out a gasp.

 “I told you,” Dagur growled. “Now I get to wear your rib cage as my armor.”

 He pushed the sword in further, all the way to the hilt.

 And he let it stay there as he watched Ryker’s life come to an end.

 Shortly after, he watched as the body crumpled to the floor, and he delighted in seeing how his sword’s point was protruding from Ryker’s back. He impaled Ryker.

“Dagur!” Heather exclaimed.

 “You heard me,” Dagur said, simply.

 Various Dragon Hunters looked at him in shock.

 “Are we still meeting with Viggo?” Heather asked, glancing at the Hunters.

 “Yes,” Dagur said.

 “I don’t think he’s gonna be all that happy that you killed his brother,” Heather noted.

 “Yeah, I don’t care,” Dagur replied.

     Dagur, now wearing Ryker’s rib cage attached to his armor, stood with Heather, having reached Viggo’s island. Lars #2, a cousin of the Grimborn brothers, who was on the ship Heather, Dagur, and Ryker were on, escorted Heather and Dagur to Viggo’s tent.

 Viggo Grimborn looked up from his game board to see his cousin, a redheaded man, and a black-haired woman. The redheaded man was wearing what looked to be ribs above his armor.

 “Lars, where is Ryker?” Viggo asked.

 “Ask him,” Lars #2 said, indicating Dagur.

 “Well?” Viggo asked.

 “Your brother made the unfortunate mistake of not listening to me when I told him not to touch my sister at all, so I’m wearing his rib cage now,” Dagur said.

 “Hmm,” Viggo said. “Very well.”

 Dagur waited for him to say something else. Anything else.

 “Nothing?” Dagur asked.

 “He was expendable,” Viggo said simply.

 Dagur squinted at him.

 That was his brother and that’s how he felt about it? Dagur killed a guy for merely touching his sister’s arm. Dagur presumed that meant all three of them: Heather, Lars #2, and Dagur himself were all expendable to this man.

 “Yeah, never mind, we’re out,” Dagur said. “Heather, let’s go.”

 As the two of them walked over to Windshear, Dagur said, “Do you think the Dragon Riders would be willing to take us in?”

 “Always worth a shot,” Heather replied.
