At least have the common decency to code them in a way that I don't have to add them to my ad blocking software's element picker TEN TIMES before they finally go away FOREVER.

And stop adding a tooltip to the post to convince me to use tags WHEN I'VE BEEN USING TAGS FOR LONGER THAN YOUR CURRENT OWNER HAS BEEN RUNNING THE SITE! Thank you! The funny thing about Umbra's design was that while I was developing it about two years ago and had some colors in mind, I described in text what I already came up with to an image generator for fun (shitty unconvincing old kind, vs now where it looks like shit but in a somewhat more convincing way) and it produced something so silly that I made her design better than what I would've settled with out of spite.

More details of my process and anti-AI ranting below the cut, so the examples given won't show up on search results. Google Images is getting polluted too much with slop to begin with.

Let's begin.

In 2022 I was drafting up Umbra's design with mostly concrete details. At this time image generators were newer and much less convincing, and I was a bit less aware of just how unethical they were, so I fed one a text description of what I had drafted for her design out of curiosity. Something along the lines of, "doll of an anthropomorphic owl librarian in glasses, blazer/suit jacket, skirt, corset, high heels, sitting on a bookshelf" and probably a few more terms. Really specific, lengthy prompt.

I try to be open-minded and give new things a shot, but the results were Not Great. Ideally, I'd want to not share the AI pictures at all on-principle, but I feel like it's useful, transparent, and necessary to show them. Both as a means of not hiding anything, but also just to appreciate where the design is at in spite of it.

Outside of this particular collage of Weird Owls, no other pictures on this blog are AI-generated. AI Image Generation is harmful, and I am against its usage.

But hey, two of the generated pictures look close, right? The top left is the closest, and bottom right is second.

That's because they started out worse, and I had to actually erase chunks of them and have the generator fill in the blanks to get anything remotely close to what I wanted. Misshapen limbs, unrecognizable anatomy, fever-dream clothing details, etc. They didn't even have a corset or proper legs until I slapped the generator in the face enough times to make it produce them. I was just using it to photobash, which was such an annoying process, I just went "this is dumb" and stopped. They're literally posed like that because I kept erasing and regnerating their limbs until they looked vaguely in-character. It literally only looks passable thanks to STRANGLING it with human input.

Before I used the image generator, I already drafted her to be night-themed with yellow eyes and something like purple, dark blue, or sky-blue as her main color; the generator making one owl yellow-eyed and purple was a happy coincidence, and the only thing the generative AI "came up with" that I didn't already have in mind or included in the prompt was the light blue shirt, which I did adapt into her cyan shirt and stockings/socks as well. That was a good call. You get One Point, Mr. AI.

...Which still meant that at its absolute best, it was a largely redundant step in the creative process if its contribution was worse than what a randomized palette generator or character creator could come up with.

That's already putting the ethics of it aside, like carbon emissions, data pollution, using artists' and photographers' work without credit or permission, the incentive to plagiarize, flooding sites like deviantart with slop, Willy Wonka Shit, etc etc etc. When people say "you can use AI as a tool though", this ordeal was enough to convince me that it's more trouble than its worth, even in its most ethical usage. I feel gross for having even tried. I wish I knew what sources went into the creation of those Weird Owls. It'd be better for research if the right people could be credited.

Nothing else on this blog is AI-generated or ever will be. The art below is purely my own (2022 vs a few weeks ago)):

Actually drawing Umbra and solidifying her design was far more rewarding than having an image generator vaguely approximate my own ideas. I wanted her to look really special, so I used a black cape and pants, gold highlights and buttons, and blue undertones to make something more distinct. Also, neck floof. Very important. I wanted the head in particular to look distinct and original, going with bold black streaks to really help her look distinguished.

I also have certain inevitable Hydroisms for Fancy characters like her; most apparent in these designs for Chasey and Kaita from even longer ago, which were more of an influence than anything else. (Old art of mine from like 2021, Kaita ref looks wonky but Chasey still holds up nicely):

Most of Umbra's other design elements were already commonly used with established ocs like Kaita, like her shape language, corset, skirt, heels, etc. It was my previous work with Chasey that inspired the use of gold buttons and highlights.

Umbra is also now a bluer shade of purple partly to distance the current design from that ordeal. All things considered, I'll probably make her more indigo next time. I already wanted her to have a wide color range from the get-go (Featured below is, again, purely my art from 2022:)

I may use a different colored shirt and stockings in the future. I like to think she has many different shirts and clothes based on the different stages of the night sky, from dusk to dawn, and the painting I made in the top right there was an exploration of her range in different lighting.

All in all, it's frustrating. I'm proud of her design, but explaining all of this is annoying, because it's technically all relevant to showing how her colors were picked and how the design was made. I still technically have AI to """Thank""", in the way you thank a bad experience for encouraging you to make things better out of spite.

Huge Shai rant, or ventting, idk tdlr twitter bad and I wanan complain about it, you can go now... I have managed to crumb away my twitter usage by a lot the past few weeks, very proud of it. Still, I wanna complain. That site continues to be a shitshow, it's so bad. The comment section of majority of popular tweets is a parody of that site. I feel like i have to wear dive gear when I go into the comments section. I have to pass through thousands, of random bluecheck bot accounts posting random videos under it. It's so annoying... If you managed to pas through them, your reward is more bluecheck mark users, who you can tell they are people, but act like chat GPT designed them. After passing through all that trash, you may eventually see non-bluecheck comments, but even then they may be trash. Like somehow there's a big number of people who just comment there to tag a random bot. Idk why u need a bot to take a screenshot, but ok. Then there's those who just tag random bots to download the video or audio... I can understand those, but still really annoying. It's like the website is trying to encoraje me to stop using it. There's no way Im going to waste my time blocking thousands of accounts to keep using it. If it wasn't for all the artists that I follow there and continue to only post on that hell. I would have stopped but alas... I used to have another reason to be there, it was the friendships, but they seem to have been kinda lost now? Faded away. Since despite my best efforts to convince them "twitter rlly bad, please move with me to tumblr, plz". They either refuse to move out of it or instead just... dont use either lmao. It's like im talking to a wall, heck, one of them is for some reason using a private account to arquive stuff, I explained to them why that is terrible thing to do on twitter. I got ignored. Shai will remember that. It feels a bit sad, seeing those friendships get distant... Ty for wasting your time reading this

Repetitions and Branching Off

Hawks/Keigo Takami x Reader.

Content warning: ANGST? references of mental illness including symptoms of psychosis, self-mutilation. Usage of AFAB pronouns. Usage of "angel" as petname. Not proof-read (and English is not really my first language) and more on waffling to cope.

Synopsis: Keigo trying to be a kind (ex)boyfriend.

Note: I don't know, I mentally checked out and came back to this. This made more sense in my head.

Perhaps this was a mistake. There has to be a turning point in Keigo's life where he should have been smarter, wiser and chose the better option.

His phone buzzes yet again. Another message, another rambling that makes sense to nobody but her. Well, it sort of makes sense to Keigo. He's heard her ramble about it, ranting and throwing her hands around in frustration, sometimes in excitement but mostly in worry too. He glances at the notification banner on his lockscreen.

"They are parko..." parkouring by the closet, in my room. Keigo does not need to unlock his phone to read the whole message. The sentence tends to end one way or the other: the cats are parkouring by the closet or the cats are parkouring in my room.

She often thinks the cats are cute. Spooky but all cats are cute.

He continues to fly in the direction of her home, her little rotting pod as she calls it nowadays. He takes his time, both mentally preparing himself on what to say and how to compose himself. It never gets easier and he wishes he made the right choice during that one moment where the story branched off.

Keigo was never a caregiver. He can only fend for himself, he could not even save his own parents. He wished he could though.

He wishes that he is mentally sound, mentally safe and mentally sane. Maybe he could help his drowning loved ones instead of being passive, instead of letting them slip through the cracks of his fingers like rainwater when he would cup his hands out when he stands under the storm.

He sees the roof of her house and makes a touchdown, preparing himself for the worst case scenario. First he truly wishes that she hasn't snapped and skedaddled to the afterlife, second he sincerely wishes to turn back time---before the story branched off.

Before he agreed that they were better off as friends and not lovers. It made it easier for him to keep track of her because she felt more obliged to open up. Now she runs rampant like the cats that plague her home, no longer find it necessary to give him an update of her life.

"Angel?" Keigo does not knock, he simply sends a feather through the mail slot of his ex-girlfriend's front door and unlocks it to let himself in.

"I used a feather to let myself in!" He calls out from the landing, he hopes that the sentence is long enough to not fuck with her head, that his sentence was not a figment of her imagination.

"Keigo...?" His best friend's voice quietly inquires, it comes from her bedroom. The ground zero of it all.

Keigo makes his way inside and no matter how many times, the sight never gets easier.

"Angel..." There goes his angel, sitting in the middle of her room swallowed in her thick duvet with her forehead slumped against her desk chair. Keigo does not waste time, he pulls her duvet off her as if ripping off bandages. He needs to assess the damages.

"I think I did good." She mumbles, her voice flat and nonchalant. Keigo gently pulls her arms, pushing her pyjama shorts up inspecting her usual sites.

Words scribbled in markers. Some were intelligible, others were repetitions and others were smudged and scratched out by her inked-stained nails. Her arms and thighs look like those paper notes you'd sneakily pass between you and your friends in class.

Keigo is not necessarily a massive guy, though his hands make people feel as if he is. He wrap his warm hands around her ink-stained arms, he makes note of how her non-dominant arm is throbbing. The wave isn't over yet.

He wants to quickly pull her into a warm embrace, a part of him wanting to just smother her with his love and pray it cures her but it is never that easy. So he pulls her slowly and gently, trying to swallow down the flinch from how empty her eyes look and how much she stank of hair grease and musk.

"You should have called me sooner." Keigo chides her quietly as he grounds her back to Earth.

"I thought he had me bugged." She retorts and Keigo wants to remind her that the prime minister of Japan is too busy to be personally stalking her and that there is no reason for the prime minister to have a vendetta against her but it is futile but he knows that on clearer days she knows this. But right now it is not that day.

She flinches, her eyes darting to the crevice under her bed.

"There's nothing there." Keigo reminds her that there are no black cats. There are no white cats either. No garden gnomes, no dogs and no children running around her home.

"I'm sorry Keigo." She apologises for taking his precious time, for putting more onto his plate. She wants to cry but there are no tears. In her head she is grief-stricken that she dragged him down with her but her body has nothing to give only flat-voiced mumblings that makes her sound like a careless asshole who is simply apologising for the sake of getting it over with. But Keigo has learned to understand, he gets it. The whole emotionally shutting down response that the body can put you through.

"You can't be sorry over something you can't control." At some point gets her to sit down on her bed, taking over her aggressive scrubbing on her skin with a damp towel in favour of gentler rubbing to remove the scribbles on her flesh.

"The doctor keeps, the doctor keeps saying that I cannot be manic. Otherwise I wouldn't have known that I was manic." She explains to Keigo. She explains this to him many times why she seems to be stuck in this cycle.

"Well your doctor is a dickhead and you need to change to a better one." He replies as his brow twitches in irritation.

"Do you want me to call you a new doctor?" He asks. It's the same conversation every few weeks, the same doctor she sticks around with despite how unheard she felt, despite how her concerns with her medicine is shrugged off.

"I...I'll do it, I promise. I'll call them this time." She vows but Keigo knows this will unlikely happen. He holds her now damped arms, her non-dominant arm still throbbing. Sometimes he wonders if psychiatrists actually acknowledged the physiological effects of wanting to damage your own body. He knows hers doesn't.

"Sleep first." Keigo suggests. It does not matter if she has not slept for more than three hours or if she has slept for sixteen hours.

He likes to think that sleeping can help her reset somehow, that she will wake up feeling a little bit better and a little bit more present. Besides, she tends to always be exhausted after...an episode.

"Will you be here tomorrow?" She asks as Keigo helps her get tucked into bed. He joins her to her bed like he used to, holding her close after turning off the nightstand lamp and ignoring how she does not feel or smell like his pretty ex-girlfriend that was so well taken care of.

"Tomorrow, we'll get you a better doctor. Tonight, we sleep." He reassures her in the darkness of her room, in the ground zero of it all.

Hello there! I saw your tags on my "Why do people keep recommending Dreamwidth as a Tumblr alternative" post, and I wanted to let you know that I actually have a guide to finding new stuff and people on Dreamwidth already written out! It should be relatively recent in my Dreamwidth 101 tag, but I can also dig it up for you if you like. Just maybe not for a while; I'm still catching up with all of the other notes on that post 😂

Ignore the below, its mostly just personal rant. ToT tldr: i think dreamwidth is cool and since i miss livejournal ill probs make an account regardless, but tumblr has some ways of using that just work better for some things i do regularly.

I plan to use dreamwidth eventually. Its just, ahh again like my tags ToT, the benefit of tumblr (over stuff like livejournal dreamwidth ao3) has been being able to easily have casual chats with people with shared interests even if they dont follow me or know how to find me specifically, long chats (unlike twitter), chats we can both save a copy of on our blogs just by reblogging. I do a lot of study blog stuff with sharing study ideas, where the informality of tumblr makes discussions warmer and more open to mentioning experiments and trial error than reddit (which language subreddits expect high quality informative additions mainly) and lets ppl find the discussion posts based on tags (again a bit easier than reddit and much easier for ppl to find then them trying to find Me specifically). And a lot of fandom liveblogging, which twitter is an alright alternative to but 1. Expects real name (and my job marketing i dont really want tied with grammatically messy giggling about some show) 2. Elon musk touching anything i make frankly 3 twitter is shortform so its not really compatible with 4000 word meta posts. Dreamwidth (and blogging sites) are. But then they're not super compatible with 20 other active show watchers finding you the same night theyre liveblogging and you all getting to chat excitedly.

Then as an artist... im glad tumblrs still up. Instagram doesnt encpurage reblogs, has a messed up algorithm, so its not good for new people finding you. Twitter is better with tags connected to public feeds, and reblogging culture, but elon musk is very cool with ai scraping any art posted and hes stolen art before personally anyway so i dont want my art near that. And then sites with no reblogging culture just are not great for spreading art to more people to find you. (I moved to tumblr after the deviantart exodus years ago, and while some ppl moved to twitter later as its also got common reblog usage which helps artists get more visibility, im just not super compatible with twitter ToT). I do wonder if eventually a new social media more artist focused will surface (since after deviantart pulled the "needs premium membership" push and ppl left, nothing really replaced it... tumblr is closest cause personal blogs allow for tagged/ personal blog Pages so you can organize art somewhat, compared to twitter or instagram. But tumblr itself was trying to push away from personal blogs too for a while, so who knows.)

Is blogging still relevant in the age of TikToks and Instagram?

According to Young (2006), a blog, otherwise known as a weblog, is basically an online journal or diary. It is anything you want it to be; you may use it to share your thoughts, get input from others, or even just rant (Young 2006). It’s safe to say that blogging isn’t exactly something new and has been around for some time now (Chin 2023).

That begs the question: what do we make of blogging in this day and age? Let's all take a moment to ponder upon it: in the past few years, the digital world has undergone a significant transformation. The emergence (and subsequent explosive growth) of social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram has given rise to new forms of content, entertainment, and the like. In addition, the ways in which content is created, distributed, and consumed these days has also changed. All of this might lead you to question whether blogging is becoming a thing of the past. But is blogging really fading into obscurity? Or is it all just a misconception of sorts?

In my opinion, blogging still has a place in our digital world nowadays. This is due to certain advantages it has over other social media sites like TikTok and Instagram. Personally speaking, one such edge that blogging possesses is the length of its content. Generally speaking, TikTok and Instagram postings are subject to certain constraints such as specific media formats, shorter word limit(s), and so on. On the other hand, blogging offers more freedom and allows for a more in-depth exploration of various subjects and/or topics, whether you're sharing a personal story, giving a detailed tutorial, or delving into a complex matter. Such a feature is especially useful when you want to engage and connect with your audience with more meaningful and deeper content. This is evident on blogging sites such as Tumblr, where the platform is set up to be different from other platforms, in the sense that it is a place of emotional authenticity (Hart 2015).

Besides that, blogging has the potential for money-making opportunities. According to an essay by Gustafsson & Muhammad (2017), bloggers participate in a wide range of economic activities by monetising their blogs using a variety of business models and based on the interaction of virtual and physical networks. In other words, you can make money by blogging. Gustafsson & Muhammad (2017) go on to say how there are more and more people who are turning to blogging as a means of income. Blogging initially started off as an avenue for people to express themselves individually, but they may now generate revenue that is often on par with (or even exceed) their salaries from conventional jobs (Gustafsson & Muhammad 2017).

Blogging’s potential doesn’t just stop there. Studies have shown that increased blog usage results in improved levels of perceived learning by students studying in higher education institutions in regard to reading, writing, and commenting in, which goes to show that blogging should be utilised as a learning and teaching tool in educational institutions. (Garcia et al. 2019). This is further supplemented by the findings from a study by Ifinedo (2017), where it was found that the perceived enjoyment, compatibility, usage, user friendliness, etc. of blogs have a favourable impact on students' happiness levels with educational blogging.

To sum up everything, I wouldn't say that blogging has become irrelevant, even with the rise and dominance of social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram; rather, it should be viewed as a medium which can be used to complement the aforementioned social media sites. In his book on blogging, Rettberg (2014) points out that numerous social media practises that we know of today are fundamentally forms of blogging, in the sense that they revolve around the same concept(s). Chin (2023) reiterates this point by stating that blogs, much like their social media counterparts, represent an online venue where people can gather to share their respective views and beliefs. The way I see it, blogging essentially functions as an alternative to TikTok and/or Instagram (of course, this is subjective and depends on the individual). With that being said, we should learn to appreciate the existence of blogs/blogging and not belittle their position.

I'm about to tell on myself so fucking hard but you know what I wish was a feature on A03?

So...nhentai gives every comic posted to it a number, right? And you can take just that number, nothing else, and type it into the site's search box and it will take you DIRECTLY to that comic. So when people on reddit or whatever want to post the source/talk about a comic they don't HAVE to post a whole ass link, they can just give you the number. Which is cool because links can be sketchy(there are a lot of fake nhentai sites that are just loaded with viruses and shit) and like, there are lots of other reasons people don't like clicking on random links/sharing them is hard(length for one). Just posting the comics barcode? I guess? saves all of that.

Plus something I have noticed is it's pretty fucking hard to find a specific fic if you don't have the link. Cuz just the title isn't gonna do you much good on A03 given how many fics all have the same/similar titles, and if you lost the author's name too you basically just have to dive headfirst into the fandom/ship tag and pray you find what you're looking for which SUCKS with big fandoms/ships that have like 100k + works. Which is actually part of why I think I've seen some people posting "I'm looking for this fic help" stuff as fics on A03.

(Edit: also with the common practice of orphaning and posting as anonymous on A03 sometimes the authors name doesn't do you any good either.)

So if each fic had/has a unique ID number it would be a lot easier to share them around so you'd be less likely to lose them, and you wouldn't have to worry about a broken link ect. cuz as long as you have those numbers you can find the fic again instantly.

And like A03 kinda has that in the sense that like, look, here's a link to one of my fics

It HAS those numbers at the end so theoretically if I knew a fics numbers I could just type in archiveofourown.org/works/(the number) and find the fic, but you can't actually use those numbers to search

So I don't see people like, normalizing sharing the numbers along with links cuz it's just a little too complicated.

But I mean just think, you find an old masterpost with hyperlinks to fics but the site has gone weird or the links broke or op deleted the post and the versions that still exist are all fucked up now something, and you're bummed cuz sure maybe they put the titles and fandoms and authors but for all you know the fics were set to anonymous or orphaned and either way that's a lot of searching, wouldn't it be nice if each listing also just had those numbers hanging out? And that way as long as you have so much as a picture of the post you can still find those fics. You don't have to save the post and hope it doesn't get deleted or go cram the stuff into "marked for later" right then and there, you can just hold on to those numbers. That sounds pretty nice to me!!

I dunno, maybe there is something I'm missing, but I was thinking about this bcs I have a bunch of new followers on Instagram who like this ship I make content for and I WANT to tell them I wrote a fic, but it's Instagram, you gotta post pics and doing a little info graphic feels kinda tacky? So I'm drawing something based on the fic to post, but then I guess I just have to put the link to the fic in the description or something, and I keep thinking GOD it would be so much easier if I could just post the numbers 38480276 and have that be enough for all of them to find the fic without scaring away people who don't want to click on random links/the awkwardness of just posting a link in general.

But yeah, that's my rant about the porn website doing it better bcs tbh sometimes they do and I think this being a feature or coming into common usage would be nice.

Holy shit all of my planning stuff for a fic I am writing (like all of it except for some drabbles) just got DELETED and I LITERALLY WANT TO DIE. I am literally so pissed rn and I just thought I would come here and complain for a minute:

- the chapter titles and character notes are gone

- the fic titles are gone

- rough ideas for fic ideas and entire chapter sections are gone

- character relationships are gone

- the timeline is gone

- oc and extra characters (names, details, relationships) are all gone

- basic chapter planning is gone

- character (and relationship)-defining lines are gone

- details about the world and how things work are gone

- hours of research: gone

I am literally so pissed bc this wasn’t even my fault. I was using a Google account that is run by an administrator and for some AMAZING reason, I am now banned from any site that is not google. I was using third-party sites that I signed into and now I can’t sign back into them bc they are banned. If you needed the reminder:

Heyoo, im just a lil curious as to what you have against twt ppl. I'm starting to realize that u guys just don't want us here and I have no clue what our app usage means to you. I was directed here after expressing my anger at being told to fuck off and that I was shit for having been in the twt community. Just want your thoughts since you've proclaimed yourself the be the officiant for chasing us away.

To be clear I'm the "officiant of chasing people away" because within the past few days I have have made some truly enlightening posts that all Twitter people should see. And that should make them be so disgusted by this site that they never come back. This is to say I am jokingly the officiant of chasing people away.

But if you want an actual answer, nobody here actually like DESPISES twt users. If that were the case we wouldn't be creating posts that welcome new users and explain the site to them or greeting new users in their asks!! It's hard to word but we don't take issue with the people, just the environment of the jrwitwt community. Basically, just a difference in vibe.

It's very hard to explain but. Honestly? It's stuff like your reblog that makes it hard for us not to be a LITTLE taunting towards jrwitwt. You barely interacted with this community AT ALL and picked out a take, that wasn't even really a take about twitter in a way that matters, and decided to make a rant 10x longer than the original post complaining about how we hate twitter. Whereas if you'd just held off on that opinion then you might have gotten FAR more context on our situation. Or you could have easily gotten an answer if you'd just sent a polite ask in the FIRST place, opening yourself up to an actual discussion rather than jumping to such an aggressive conclusion.

When you typed, "just calm down bro," it was LAUGHABLE to read for the sheer fact you produced a problem where there didn't have to be any. You made a member of our community anxious and upset and for what? And for what?

I would talk more abt this but I think this is the main point that matters right now. And I would apologise for my less sympathic wording, but I think you're mature enough to understand why that's difficult for me to do with the current context.

If you still want to give jrwiblr a chance, then feel free to lurk and maybe get to know it better before you start to chit chat again. But if you're this attached to the jrwitwt community then you can easily just. Stay there? Like. You don't have to move here. If you don't like our takes then stay on twitter. You don't have to make a fuss abt it. Just say, "this community isn't for me" and move on.

I’m trying to process the concept that I leave abstract little pieces of my history everywhere I go and everywhere I touch.

This blog has seen the inside of my brain. My old messages from 2016 and onwards, held within maybe ten different social media sites, bearing witness. Ive kept physical journals all throughout my writing age, but never with consistency, placed across dioramas of bound paper and scattered years. Haphazard rants in discord servers. Tracking apps that I’d download, record in for a few months, and then discard in the backseats of my memory just as quickly. Handwritten digital calendars since I got my iPad, lain untouched since months ago. A Google+ account from when I was ten, scattered in the winds and dissolved to dust after the website was shut down. My disorderly IOS notes, efficient and reliable. What I say, and speak in the presence of other people, and how they perceive me. Little art on notes or pieces of paper that I’d handed to my friends, simply because I disdained keeping my own work. Proof of life and thought is eerie and palpable, and I don’t think self-sentience throughout time should be so discerning.

I’ve been thinking of setting up a notion for numerous things, but I think it may be the customization possibilities that draw me, not quite the practical usage.

On further thought, I believe a solid compromise between fashion and functionality would be to discard the idea of a life planner, habit and chore tracker, or brainstorming dump in entirety—- god forbid I’d ever be able to use a structured format like notion to any degree of effectiveness, with a brain condemned to as much chronic spontaneity as mine. When the ADHD calls, it hollers.

I may create a page orr two for other things though, such as an aesthetically streamlined media consumption tracker. Not just with books as seen typically, but also tv shows, movies, video games, music, and even YouTube videos. I think it would be useful to take an overall look at what kind of media I consume on a regular basis. (If half of it is ASMR. Um. In my defense you can call me an underrated asmr channel hunter. I’m cultured on the community, okay 🥶)

I’ve also been thinking of some sort of financial tracker to help me gain a clearer gauge on my understanding of finances, but that may be best suited to something that isn’t constructed on Notion.

Let me preface this with I remember having a computer with lots of games and applications that was a solid workhorse in 1998 that THE ENTIRE HARD DRIVE was 2GB. TWO. This right here is a huge swath of why things are the way they are. There is no optimization, no consideration for data usage, just a constant stream of bloat, laziness, and maliciousness. Every millisecond sharing sloppy data. Everything is buggy and crashing. Everything is pervasive and the data transfer ability so huge that they just do not have to care anymore. In 1998, an unoptimized buggy crash-prone POS did not sell to your 5 million customers and your company died.

In 2023, you are guaranteed hundreds of millions, possibly billions, of customers and you need 10 million to stay afloat, so to hell with making anything optimized or functional. If your shitty phone app takes4.5 TIMES more space than an entire computer has any reason to, you are not even good at making a malicious modern POS, you need to be punched in the throat and blackballed from ever touching technology again because you’re making things massively worse. I remember the internet back in 1998, how sites would take 20 minutes to load. But then when we got faster internet, you know what happened? Garbage. Lots of garbage. Instead of keeping a tidy internet, we started having video adverts and tracking and data mining always outpacing the speed of the connection. Today, often more than 95% of our internet usage is not even what we’re want, but the massive deluge of garbage.

Adblocking on youtube alone, removes 60%+ of the data transferred. Watching 1080p videos or higher, hours worth, and it cuts that much out?! I know I am an old man, but surely there is an overlap between old man ranting and just why can’t things be better on this front? We have massive amounts of technology, massive amounts of electricity, dedicated to maintaining the most unoptimized, bloated, malicious shitpile of a technological nightmare. And for what? Surely all of the assholes doing this could save money by making these things work better?

The second thing to keep in mind is that the niche of the Internet you’ve carved out for yourself using your home computer is also visible to your employer. Increasingly, potential employers use tools to screen job candidates’ presence on the Internet. That hysterical YouTube video of you dancing with a lampshade on your head at your best friend’s bridal shower may prevent you from landing the job of your dreams. Before making a bold rant on your blog or uploading a questionable picture to a social networking site, think about the impact it might have on your career.

There’s no arguing that computers enrich our lives and provide us with options our mothers never dreamed of. As women, though, computers can also be our downfall at work. It may be acceptable for men to check out the Sports Illustrated website while they’re at work (even the swimsuit edition!), but women are held to a higher standard… Just ask Carmen Kontur-Gronquist.
