Arizona's Journal, Ch. 4: In Coppenhagan
Tumblr media
Prev - In Coppenhagen - Next - All - [ AO3 ]
I hate flying. Hate the TSA and the airlines and their bullshit ‘you can’t bring four ounces of water on board so we’ll gouge you $10 for an Aquafina past the first security checkpoint.’ Hate the scanners and the noise and the security theatre that took my contact solution but let me fly with the 5-inch Skeletool I’d left in my backpack from our last hike on Tiger Mountain. Hate it all.
The worst part of flying, though, was the hours and hours and hours it took to get my hands on the Kid so I could look him in the eye and watch him try not to laugh at the overprotective near paranoia that drove me to hop on a plane for a 13-hour flight because he wouldn’t pick up his phone.
“If you saw the guy I had in my bed, Arizona, you’d know why I didn’t want to answer,” he’d laugh and flip his neon green curls out of his eyes. “He went all day and all night.”
Then the Kid would give me a hug and make me breakfast for dinner and insist I take his bed while he slept on the couch. “What, you think I don’t clean the sheets? I’m not 19 anymore…”
He wouldn’t be lying in this damned hospital bed while Dino and the nurses and I all waited for him to wake up.
“Mrs. Prince? Your son has suffered a….” It bristled to be called fucking Mrs. Anything, let alone be called that foul beast who’d birthed this amazing, creative, brilliant kid, well, as the beard I fought against with an electric razor each morning protested, man. But it beat being left in the waiting room day after day, not being able to see him. So I lied and told them Remus was my son.
“Arizona?” Dino stood by the foot of the bed after another tonicity check the Kid had failed. “We have a staff meeting. I promised I would share the latest, even if…”
I nodded and held the Kid’s hand close to my lips. “Yeah, even if it’s just that he’s still breathing.”
“See you tonight, Remus,” he patted the Kid’s leg through the pristine hospital blanket and the little whooshing anti-blood clot booties they had the post-ops—and the coma patients—wear. “Wake up soon, man,” he whispered. “Your team’s pulling for you. Vi elsker dig,” He met my eyes and nodded. “Can I bring you anything?”
I shook my head. “I’m fine, thank you, though.” The nurses were kind and they kept hope in their voices and their words, but their eyes grew heavier with doubt each morning the Kid failed another Glasgow test. They’ve started pushing me more to go out and walk or have more than tea or whatever they could scrounge up from the break room.
They’re preparing me. The nurses and the orderly who comes in to help me gently twist and turn his six-foot tall frame to bathe him and change his clothes. Even the PA who found me a charger for the Kid’s razor when I couldn’t find the cord back at his apartment. They’re preparing me for the worst outcomes. They’re preparing me to be willing to leave this hospital without him. They’re preparing me and I know it and it fucking sucks.
I want to call Roman. I want to tell him his brother is here, that he should come and see him. Every day I don’t feels more like my choice and less like the Kid’s.
Each call had begun to end the same.
“Have you talked with your brother lately?” I’d always ask, knowing the answer.
“He’s busy with his newlywed life,” he’d say. Or, “I will once this project is done, I’m too scattered to make much sense anyway.”
“I’m sure he misses you,” I’d cajole, gently, softly. Repeatedly.
“I know. I just…” His sigh buzzed over the phone. "I'll call him."
I couldn’t find the charging cord, but I did find a phone bill. My number was the only one outside of Copenhagen on the damn thing.
I’m on one my ‘encouraged’ breaks while the Kid goes through another MRI. A muted television blasts images from the corner of this little café, hidden away at the entrance to staff parking. I can hardly believe the date. Been here three weeks. Coffee’s good, sunshine’s better. I just want the Kid to come down here and see it for himself.

Odds & Ends: June 7, 2024
Society of the Snow. Based on the true story of the crash of a Uruguayan plane carrying a rugby team in the Andes in 1972, this intense and disturbing film (I’m not kidding, it’s not for the faint of heart . . . or stomach), is a real-life survival story at its most unromantic. While the thing that most people know about the story is that survivors of the crash had to turn to eating the bodies of dead passengers to sustain themselves, it’s really about much more than that — finding meaning in hardship, the bonds and brotherhood formed in adversity, and the infinite human capacity to endure. (The film was made in Spanish; watch the original with English subtitles rather than the overdubbed verision.)  Huckberry’s Father’s Day Shop. Father’s Day is next Sunday, and if you’re looking for a gift for dear old dad (or looking for ideas for others to gift you), check out Huckberry’s online shop, where they’ve curated a collection of gift ideas for all types of dads. A few standouts: * Flint and Tinder Cotton Hemp Polo Shirt. I’m wearing one right now as I write this. It’s been my go-to polo shirt for the past few months. Lightweight, breathable, and casually cool. * Bellroy Hide and Seek Wallet. My wallet for the past few years. It’s thin, but allows you to cram a lot of stuff in it. It’s still going strong. See my full review here. * Skeletool CX. I’m always on the lookout for new pocket knives and multi-tools. The Skeletool from Leatherman is going to be my next acquisition. It’s a lightweight, stripped-to-the-bone version of their iconic multi-tool.  Stop Reading the News by Rolf Dobelli. I enjoyed this short book about why you should stop reading the news and following the news on social media. A few of the reasons: keeping up with the news destroys your attention span, you can’t act on 90%+ of it so it just makes you anxious, and it can suck up all your time. Dobelli also responds to potential objections people have about ditching the news, such as the idea that keeping up with current events is an obligation of a responsible citizen. We’ve made similar points to Dobelli’s in this article and Sunday Fireside and have been spare consumers of news for a long time now. But the book’s inspired me to ditch X/Twitter (again!). I fell off my don’t-read-X bandwagon a few months ago, and I could definitely feel myself getting dumber. Every Day Do Something That Won’t Compute. In a commencement address given at a prep school, Jeffrey Bilbro encouraged the young grads to prepare for failure by having things in their life that they do that are “beautiful and totally useless.” He quotes a line from a Wendell Berry poem that can help you make sure you’re not living your life only in achievement/productivity mode: “friends, every day do something / that won’t compute.” It’s made me think of things I do or could start doing that don’t compute: reading a good book for the sake of reading a good book, playing basketball with my kids, catching up with an old friend. Do more things that don’t compute.  Quote of the Week A light supper, a good night’s sleep, and a fine morning, have sometimes made a hero of the same man, who by an indigestion, a restless night, and a rainy morning, would have proved a coward. —Lord Chesterfield Help support independent publishing. 5 Best Multi-Tools (2023): Leatherman, Victorinox, and Ones to Avoid
There are a ton of other multi-tools out there, and brands like Leatherman and Victorinox have models upon models that make it confusing to figure out exactly what to get. Here are some others I like. Leatherman Skeletool CX for $90: This one is slightly smaller than the Wave Plus, but it’s still a standard-sized multi-tool. If you don’t need all the bells and whistles our top pick offers, you…

Survival multi tool

#Survival multi tool upgrade
Beautiful, simple, tough.įor preppers who are looking to stay within the SAK family, the $30 Victorinox Classic Alox is one of the most well-loved products in the EDC scene. You can trade away durability, versatility, and ease of use for more compact options - even so far as to carry one on a keyring, in a watch pocket, or as a belt buckle.Įlegant design and outsized functionality have made this tiny tool a giant of the EDC world. It’s compact enough to slip in a pocket, durable enough to withstand years of abuse, and capable enough to get you out of a jam. The Evolution 18 has many of the core tools preppers look for, without any of the goofy stuff like corkscrews or hooks. The best EDC Swiss Army Knife is the $43 Victorinox Evolution 18, a modernized version of the classic SAK that features a locking knife blade for added safety. Before the Leatherman took over this space in the 90’s, the SAK faithfully served generations of campers, soldiers, scouts, and outdoors people, and it’s still an amazing option for those who don’t need a large set of pliers or wire cutters on their multitool. The other way to EDC a multitool is to select a Swiss Army Knife (SAK), preferably a legit, Swiss-made one from Victorinox. The extra $15 over the standard Leatherman Skeletool gets you a 154CM steel knife blade that’s a wonder of ergonomics and durability, making the seven-tool CX less of a multitool and more of a “high-end pocket knife that happens to have pliers, a bit driver, and some other tools.” We’re recommending a premium version of the standard Skeletool because of its superior materials. The EDC king of the hill.įor preppers who want something more compact and discrete, we like the 4-inch, 5-ounce $90 Leatherman Skeletool CX. The knife on this multitool is so great, it's essentially a high-end pocket knife with 6 more tools rolled into it. But a saw blade and other less frequently used tools can add a meaningful amount of bulk, which causes some people to prefer slimmer, sawless multitools for EDC as a compliment to the full-sized tool kept in their emergency kits. Some people do EDC a full-sized product like the Wave+ or Charge+ TTi. One of the main attractions of a mulitool is that you get compact versions of two of our four core edged tools - a saw and a knife - in the same package. The 19-tool Charge+ adds a sharp hook for cutting straps to the back of the 420HC serrated saw blade, but otherwise the tool mix is the same as the Wave+. We like the titanium handle slabs for their combination of comfort, durability, and low weight (a little under half an ounce lighter than the Wave+). The 19-tool Charge+ TTi’s knife blade is made of a super steel, S30V, that you find on high-end custom folding knives.
#Survival multi tool upgrade
It won’t freak out your office mates if you pull out a multitool blade to open a package or use the screw bit to disassemble the crappy copy machine.Įverything that's awesome about the category-defining Wave+, but with a super steel knife blade and comfortable, lightweight Titanium handle scales.Ī worthy upgrade is the $195 Leatherman Charge+ TTi, Leatherman’s premium multitool offering that’s basically an upgraded version of the Wave+. Multitools are also great in urban or more sensitive settings because they’re a non-threatening way to carry a pocket knife. You’ll want to keep your multitool on your body as much as possible during an emergency - typically in a pocket or on a belt - because if you lose your bags, the multitool is one of the things you’ll miss the most. The best multitools are so handy that many people carry one every day (“EDC” for everyday carry) as their primary “I always have it no matter what” tool.Įven if you don’t EDC a multitool, you should have at least one in your home supplies and ideally another one in your emergency bags. Most of the best multitools in our review hold between 10 and 18 common tools, helping you with a wide range of survival and daily tasks such as: cutting boxes, fixing an engine, building a shelter, creating a trap, sharpening a knife, sparking a fire from a ferro rod, or removing a hot pot from a campfire. It’s hard to think of another prep that fits as much critical functionality into as small of a package as a great multitool, which is why it’s one of the four edged tools everyone should have.
