I’ve been thinking about Pterano fanfic for 10 years. I haven’t written a word.
But the essential is Dessie finds newly exiled Pterano sitting in HER waiting spot (it’s a tiny little shaded area just outside Skywater Valley’s border with a log and waterfall where she waits for her mother in case she comes). And at first she’s mad because um hey this is MY waiting spot get your own. But she’s like the quivalent size of me holding a bottle of aspirin to him. So that doesn’t last long because what’s she gonna do.
Tumblr media
She does end up getting him to come to the herd. In Skywater Valley lives a herd of Farwalkers who mostly stay in the valley until the rainy season drives them from their land until the floods die down. Pterano talks to and learns a lot from the herds leader, a Quetzalcoatlus named Altlas. (He, Dessie, and the Dimorphodon, Deemo, are the only flyers in the valley). It’s this sort of place Pterano starts growing a little more. He tells stories to the children sometimes but he gradually, if meekly, admits they are stories. Like he’s so used to bolstering himself and now he’s waffling between earning praise for false endeavors or admitting it’s nothing more than tales. Dessie hears none of it and thinks he’s kind of the coolest.
There’s nothing really big or exciting until the second act. It’s a lot of people learning about themselves and eachother and what it means to really be a Very Important Creature.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, it’s white, but think of it as a blank slate. After all, if we have $6M to buy it, we should have the money to paint it, right? It’s a shame that the white beams just blend into the ceiling. Beautiful windows, though, w/a great view of the Magothy River.

We Didn't Start the Fire: Cultural Folklore of the Plainmanes
A long-long time in before-time, when story-telling hunt-beasts only have began to tell their first stories, there was one.
His name was Flame-Tamer.
Flame-Tamer was like us. He was like those in before-time. He lived with his pack. He hunted the grazer-beasts and the sea-swimmers.
And like them, he feared the roar-wind.
In before-time, they feared the great roar-wind. The roar-wind that brought the dark skysmoke, that poured down water. Great roar-wind destroyed all.
But worst was the sky-light.
The sky-light that dwelled in the skysmoke, that ran through the skysmoke like a beast yet was no beast. That roared like a beast, yet was no beast.
And sometimes the sky-light reached down from the sky to claw at the ground.
Its claw...brought flame.
The sky-light ran on the ground and left prints of its claws on the ground. Like a beast leaving prints in the sand.
But the prints of the sky-light was flame.
The sky-light ran in the sky. It would claw through skysmoke. Then it would roar.
Claw through sky, bright light! Then right after roar, heard from sky to ground!
Then its prints, golden like a flower, yet no flower, hot like sky-circles, yet near and not far.
Hungry like a beast, eat all in flame.
Flame print of sky-light, eat all. Be it plant or beast alike. But water it feared. It stopped when it touched water. And when the skywater fell...it died and was no more.
Peoples of before-time feared the sky-light, and the flame print.
It is nature of story-telling hunt-beasts. Like all other beasts.
To fear what they do not understand.
But unlike other beasts, it is also in our nature to want to understand.
To ask why? Or ask how? To be curious, to learn.
And one day, Flame-Tamer wanted to understand.
He was afraid, like always.
But the want to know was strong. Strong than his fear of what he did not know.
One day, the roar-wind came. The sky became dark, covered the sky circles. The wind blew.
The pack was afraid.
They run to home, run to shelter, into cave where the claws of sky-light could not reach them. Where its print would not consume them.
But not Flame-Tamer.
He fought fear, and ran outside. To where the roar-wind had gathered. To where the sky-light had come, roaring, howling like angered beasts.
"Do not go," cried the pack of Flame-Tamer. "The sky-light will catch you. The flame will eat you. Are you not afraid?"
And Flame-Tamer answered, "I am afraid. But I want to know the sky-light."
And Flame-Tamer ran to the outside.
Beneath the roar-wind, beneath the dark skysmoke, he stood and watched.
And he saw the sky-light claw at the ground. Its claws became more claws, like branching of trees, like river bending and breaking.
And then sky-light cried out to him.
"I am sky-light, and fear and flame!" it told him. "All beasts fear and flee at sky-light!"
But Flame-Tamer said to the sky-light, "I am not afraid."
"You lie," roared the sky-light, "all beasts fear the sky-light! You are beast like them all."
"I am story-telling hunt-beast", Flame-Tamer answered. "We fear what we do not understand."
"I want to understand."
The sky-light roared in fury and flashed in the sky! The sky-light never knew something that did not fear it! And it was very angry.
The sky-light reached its claw. And struck the ground before Flame-Tamer.
Flame-Tamer was afraid. He flinched.
But he did not run.
He stood where he was, he looked right up at the sky-light, and the flame print bloomed before him.
"I want to understand."
The sky-light became quiet and less angry.
"You are beast," it told him. "But different beast. You feel, but do not do as you feel."
"You are strange." said the sky-light.
"What are you, what is your print?" Flame-Tamer asked. "I want to understand."
"Very well," the sky-light said, "You want to know."
"I am the power of the skysmoke, the power that runs through the sky, I am the one who burns with the heat of the sky-circles who touches the ground with the claw of flame. I am one who comes in the roar-wind to clean the world, and to destroy, where there is destroyed, new life will come."
"My print is golden like a flower, like the fire-circle, and it breathes smoke and eats air. My flame is hungry like a beast and must be fed. My flame and print is a small fire-circle, it is light and it is heat, but on the ground. It is like a wild beast, but it is no beast. And it is...a gift."
"A gift?" asked Flame-Tamer. "The flame print belong to us?"
"The flame print will serve if you tame it. Keep it caged, feed it, it will serve. But let it escape, it will destroy. Not feed it, it will die. And use it to hurt...and it will kill without mercy."
Flame-Tamer was silent for a time.
Flame was a gift. It could help, it could hurt.
But he was story-telling hunt-beast. He had choice. To choose help, or choose hurt.
"My print is a gift with rules." boomed the sky-light. "Follow rules, help, break rules, hurt."
"Will story-telling hunt-beast choose?"
Flame-Tamer answered the sky-light.
"I choose help."
"Good," the sky-light answered.
And the sky-light was gone. All there was was the flame print.
Flame-Tamer returned to the cave, carrying piece of the flame on a branch.
The pack saw the light, and was afraid.
"What is that?" they cried, "Bring the flame in with us?"
Flame-Tamer said. "It is a gift of the sky-light. It is a gift that can help or harm. We must not fear it. We must understand it and know what it can do."
They caged the flame in stones. They fed it leaves, branches. And it served them.
It scared away other beasts, ones who meant harm. It made cold darktimes less cold.
But it was a gift they must care for.
Like a beast, it must be fed. If not fed, it grows weak. Then it dies.
And they, and we, to this day cannot make it, no more we can bring dead to life.
All we can do is wait.
Wait for the sky-light to come with the roar-wind--and bring us flame again.
°°°°°°°°°°
"Father of father, that is a silly story," chirped a young pup. "The sky-light cannot talk!"
"Maybe now it does not," crooned the patient reply. "Maybe in before-time, in past-day, it did."
"Can we say it did?" asked the pup.
"Can we say it did not?" asked the elder.
The pup was quiet in a moment of contemplation.
"Now hush-hush, beloved small one. The fire-circle has left the sky, and it is already sleep-time."

Whee, it's time to begin the fourth chapter of Rain Code: Chapter Two.
Tumblr media
Oh good. This chapter's going to involve high school students and theater. I was a theater kid in high school so this certainly won't be extremely affecting.
Tumblr media
Do I get to pick who I hang out with? Because I pick Fubuki.
Then, next chapter, I can hang out with... Mmm... Fubuki. And after that, if there's time, Fubuki.
Tumblr media
Yeah, they filed a formal complaint after all of the stuff I said about them during our last investigation together. They had no problem being suspected of the crime; Philosophically, they're a firm believer in nobody being above suspicion. But I also called them a corporate shill and said a lot of other mean things that were completely unprofessional, creating a hostile work environment.
Chief doesn't have any money to pay out compensation, though. Instead, Halara gets to be the boss for the day.
Tumblr media
The real explanation for why Halara's over there is that they walked in, saw Yakou's chair and desk unoccupied, and immediately called dibs. They're like a housecat when it comes to important seats of privilege.
Tumblr media
No, for real, there has to be some incredible secret talent that simply hasn't come up. I can fully believe that she's... like this. I'm pretty sure at this point that she has some kind of cognitive disability or short-term memory loss. Neurodivergent at least.
But there has to be more to her than just this running joke. She's a Master Detective who survived Amaterasu's murder-wall. You gotta give me something, game.
Tumblr media
We're definitely partnering with Desuhiko this chapter. That's unfortunate. Crime-solving with my bestie will have to wait.
Which means, based on the precedent set with Halara, we're going to team up with Desuhiko not just for the investigation but also the Mystery Labyrinth - Ultimately earning his respect, but then he won't remember what happened in the labyrinth so he can continue being shitty in the real world.
Great. I look forward to spending hours attached at the hip to Blue/Gary Oak.
Tumblr media
I'm amazing, but you heard what Halara said about the fridge being empty. We're out of milk, butter, battery acid, sausage... a lot of staples for meal prep simply aren't available. I wouldn't know where to begin.
Tumblr media
Oh, I guess we are hanging out with Fubuki. Desuhiko's about to quit and go become a professional street musician instead. I wish him the best of luck in his fulfilling new career.
You go follow your dreams, bruh! I will be rooting and believing in you. From in here. Where it's dry and warm.
Tumblr media
Oh. Oh no! The 14-year-old Shonen Rival wants to impress us with his sick guitar skills! Someone, anyone get us out of--
Tumblr media
YAKOU! MY MAN! GLORIOUS LEADER OF OUR PROUD INSTITUTION! Have a seat. Let's hold a team meeting! I am very invested in whatever you have to say, just as always!
Halara get out of his chair
Can I get you a hot cup of coffee? No, shit, I just said there's no milk or battery acid. Uh. Lukewarm cup of skywater? I'm trying, man, but we're wiped out.

Alive
Primal
She awoke spear in hand, facing down a tremendous beast. But she was not alone, she could see others out of the corner of her vision. But they stood unmoving, just as the beast did.
She stepped back, lowering her spear and raised again almost immediately as a cry echoed from somewhere, followed by more and more.
She looked around before she looked Out. She saw them, hands to mouths, like her but not. Creators.
They were so big as they reached with hands to touch her. The one who made her placed fingers upon her reverently, smudging her a little and she withdrew in pain.
They held up the drawing utensil, and fixed the part of her that they had smeared across her world. It was simple for them to reach up and do it. They had Created her. And they would create many more like her.
Primal, though she wasn’t called that yet, she wasn’t called anything, had a family now. There were many like her, and smaller ones, children.
They lived happily with their Creators and their own family which also grew.
Until.
Another family came to the cave, spears in hand. They wanted the cave and they were going to take it.
These others, these Destroyers, they killed their Creators and then they moved to smudge out Primal’s family. No trace of their Creators could remain.
Primal gathered those she could and ran out of the cave along the walls. She had done this before, when she had been the only one, to follow her Creator across the land.
They huddled and hid, her family, but they never really recovered.
Skywater destroyed them. Others from the Outside found them and destroyed them. Some chose to just… Stop.
Until she was alone again. The only one.
She wouldn’t Stop. The world had grown, changed, it was new and she still wanted to see what was next.
It was easier alone. She could sneak easier. Alone she was less noticeable.
She watched change happen.
She roamed.
She watched Life.
She watched Death.
She watched the skies go grey with smoke.
She watched mountains crumble and leave new rock faces for her to travel.
She watched the ocean from her cliff side perch.
She was lonely but she loved this place.
And she did look for others, and sometimes she even found them, though they looked very different from her.
Some feared her, others admired her. She never stayed long. Never had a family again.
Families got Lost.
She didn’t know what exactly had happened, the Creator had raised a device, there had been a strange sound and now… she was here.
The Creator didn’t seem to expect it either, and dropped Primal’s new home. She tried to moved back to the wall and found she couldn’t.
She tore through her new environment, searching for a way out, pursued by the Creator at every turn before truly tearing a hole and making her escape into the light.
She fell for what felt like forever in the whiteness.
And they suddenly there was a wall in front of her. A floor that she hit. Below she could see grass, and houses.
But this wasn’t like seeing Out.
The barrier here was real, and physical. Which meant it could be broken.
She stabbed at it with her spear, and it eventually shattered like glass and she fell to the ground below, bouncing several times.
There were others, other Sticks.
None like her. But she was used to being different by now. They were smooth, their movement fluid, she’d not seen Sticks like them before either.
They were kind, they helped her find a place to live, and food to eat. But she could tell they feared her.
And that was Fine.

rain and stormy skies
skywater and lightning was skylight
sitting in the backseat of the storm
windows rolled down and raindrops running down me
cold winds as my warm blanket
drink in my hand growing ever colder
taking the backroads, even though the streets were clear
muddy paths and ugly drooping trees
water flowing into the storm drain
and cactus wrapped in gold
i have been okay before, in a time i can’t remember
but right then
in that car, in that storm, in that hour and minute,
i think i felt happy again.

I'm glad you liked my question, thanks! :) I’m also curious as to how Dessie reacts if and when she discovers the whole truth to Pterano’s backstory...I imagine she knows him as he is now well enough to know he's left the past behind. I also think Petrie would be happy to see his uncle as he is now too, though I imagine he doesn't worship the air he flies on like he did before!
Dessie is very young, hatched just before the Great Earthshake, a little after her nest mates (To compare with the Great Valley kids, A little younger than Petrie, a little older than Spike). So the exacts of Pteranos past aren't really necessary for her to know. What she knows is 'grown ups make mistakes too, sometimes dreadful mistakes', which comes up when she asks a Pterano who does not know the answer why her mother left her during the Earthshake. She also knows he 'did something terrible that cost others greatly'. (His words at his admission).
She's not stupid, she's just a kid who sees the world a certain way. The other children in the Great Valley know what he did and they needed to to understand the reactions of the Grown Ups and why they were wary. Dessie, and by extension the others of Skywater Valley, know a Pterano post movie 7 who is clumsily trying (and failing sometimes) to be different, so that he can, as he said, come back to the Great Valley and prove himself. (Being said leader Atlus is the only one who knows, and his philosophy is to look at the now.).
Dessie cares that she has people who cares. That she has someone she can shout at just before sunrise that another day of fun is ahead. And someone who will call her home when the Great Night Circle comes once more.
I think Petrie still loves his uncle of course he does. He's just conflicted given the events of the movie but I think he would be happy to see his uncle as he is now, a little closer to how he saw him as a hatchling, without the hero worship. Donna as well is proud of her brother in the end.
This doesn't let him off the hook of course. He messed up in a very big way and it's something that weighs on him heavily still. But I think growing and changing as he has by the end of the story, he gets an idea of what it really means to be a very important creature.
