This week's deep dive rec is Wall Street Journal reporter John Carreyrou's investigation into infamously fraudulent biotech start-up Theranos and its founder and CEO, Elizabeth Holmes, which conveniently comes in both book and podcast format. Podcast summary:
She was once the world's youngest self-made female billionaire. Now Elizabeth Holmes, founder of the blood-testing startup Theranos, stands accused of leading a massive fraud, and lying to investors, doctors, and patients about the capabilities of her technology. If convicted, she faces up to 20 years in prison. But Elizabeth may be able to sway a jury with her charisma, highly unusual defense strategy and the fact that key evidence has gone missing. John Carreyrou broke the Theranos scandal. Now he’ll take you into the courtroom as he examines Silicon Valley’s fake it-til-you-make it culture, and the case against Holmes.
Episodes 8 and 9 are particularly interesting looks into how Theranos secured funding and partnerships using faked demos, and how this strategy fell apart when potential clients pressed for more technical details. Episode 8 summary:
Elizabeth Holmes wowed investors, board members and journalists with live, in-person demonstrations that made it seem like her blood-testing machine worked. But most of these demos were faked. Behind the scenes, the blood samples were tested either manually or on third-party lab equipment. It's an astoundingly bold deception that was enabled by a software application Sunny Balwani wrote.
Episode 9 excerpt:
NARRATOR: The DOD contingent pressed for more information on how the black box that looked like a big desktop computer tower even worked. Holmes and Edlund refused to answer. That was a trade secret, they repeated. Frustrated, one member of the DOD delegation blurted out, "I'm starting to believe the device is just a box of Palo Alto air." Sensing that they were fast losing credibility, Holmes and Edlund made a small concession. They agreed to pass around the white rectangular cartridge containing the blood sample that slotted into the front of the device. Wagar asked what was inside the cartridge beside the blood sample. WAGAR: And they're like, we're not going to tell you. And so when I got to me, I reached into my pocket and pulled my Swiss army knife out and I started to try and cut it apart because you know, I'm curious and that really wigged them out. Um, I think they kind of jumped over the table to take it back from me. And I laughed at them and I said, you know, you realize that if you actually let this thing out into the wild, the first cartridge, people are going to tear it apart to see how it works. You know, you can't nondisclosure the entire Department of Defense.

My feelings on these little macs are complicated. Ground breaking machines for sure but also possibly a mistake that became too big to acknowledge as one. Let me explain. This system is in the same bittiness as the Apple IIgs. Of the two, the IIgs is the better system despite the CPU being one of the weakest in that class by virtue of it having advanced color graphics and phenomenal sound capabilities. On top of being Apple IIe compatible! The Macintosh in exchange has a powerful CPU, but has monochrome graphics and beeper sound. Yet, Apple at the behest of Steve Jobs put the future of the company on these machines. Hindsight is wonderful in this regard, Steve Jobs was ultimately right but it leaves a curiosity of what could have been.
I haven't done much with this system other than power it on to verify it works but it needs some attention.
To Do:
Recap the analog board, it's working but there are rifas and those are time bombs.
HDD solution and boot disks.
Games and Software
Clean the machine up for showing.
Long Term To Do:
There isn't much I can do with this machine in terms of upgrades, it has 4 MB of RAM which is all it can have and there are no expansion slots so any upgrades would have to be a processor mezzanine board.

💫Blu theory timeeee :D✨
Okay, not sure if anyone else has already said or thought about this but, I NEEDED TO WRITE THIS DOWN TO GET IT OUTTA MY SILLY HEAD AND YALL ARE COMIN DOWN WITH ME >:)
(Digital Circus Edition!!!)
LONG POST WARNING LMAO THE BRAINROT IS REAL SEND HELP 💀
Now that I've got your attention hehehe, lets take a momentary deep dive into the wacky world of The Amazing Digital Circus!
So lets review what we know from the pilot ep.
The world inhabits some sort of virtual reality.
Its completely run by AI, that being Caine, Bubble, and other artificial characters that seem to be spontaneously created by Caine at will. (For example the Gloink Queen, those wooden mannequins, ect.)
The human victims are transported to the "digital realm" when they put on some sort of headset.
The transition completely wipes their memories of their past lives.
When the human mind is clouded with existential dread, that being caused by loosing all sense of sanity at the realization of never being able to leave, the person becomes "abstracted" and aggressive.
This behavior not only affects the other "players" but the AI as well in some cases completely destroying them.
Caine is capable of fixing small abstractions (like Pomni and Ragatha) but unable to with a completely abstracted individual. Which seems to automatically cross their pfp on their respective doors and generate new slots for new players.
What we DONT KNOW as of when I'm writing this lmao...
Who built/programmed the headsets and why?
How are all these people getting possession of them?
Is it a company? A case of rouge AI? A tiktok trend gone wrong???
What happens to the victims originals body? Does anyone in the real world know what's going on??
How long has everyone been in there?? Does time work differently in the virtual world?? Does time pass at all??
DOES GETTING ABSTRACTED MEAN U DED??? Or is there a way to fix being abstracted?? (GIVE KINGER HIS WIFE BACK)
Now that THATS outta the way... lets move on to my theory.
I firmly believe Caine genuinely has no clue why humans are popping into the circus at all. I know this already has been debunked by goose but I just wanted to clarify.
He doesn't really understand human emotion, he is an AI after all, so he naturally lacks empathy. All he really knows is to keep the humans entertained, censor swearing, and be silly lmao. It's refreshing from the classic "grrr angy bot mad at hooman" stuff. NOT SAYING THATS WHAT HAPPENING BUT SPECIFICALLY FOR CAINE AND BUBBLE LOL. they just goofy fr.
It kinda reminds me of the generative AI, like whats going on today with ChatGPT or CharacterAI. Its a software that entertains the human by creating random means of conversation or environmental; storytelling. (Its so funny because I'm writing a paper about it in college, I personally don't support AI generative content but it's still very fascinating to explore how these machines work and function. And this is just a silly cartoon after all lmaooo.)
The reason I bring this up is because of the "Machine Learning" aspect of it. You see, generative AI nowadays is fed certain information from its human user, which then uses what knowledge its given in the input into the output.
This could be the reason why the "exit door" kept popping up. Because the algorithm is being fed information from its human users and the output being the existence of a "fake exit" door. The software is just trying to simulate what the humans want but cant physically do because as of right now, its impossible.
I also think this affects how humans are perceived in their avatars. Everyone has a unique look to them when they enter the circus, this could be caused by the AI reading whatever was left of their thoughts or feelings before entering the virtual world.
Ragatha is perceived as a doll, or some sort of child's toy. (she kinda reminds me of the ones I used to have as a little girl.) It could've recognized something she was fond of, or maybe how she perceived herself when she was human, maybe she saw herself at some point being toyed with mentally or perhaps she was in a situation were she felt like she had no control. Which is why she attempts to stay optimistic and see the brighter side of every situation.
Jax is some sort of anthropomorphic rabbit, (I like to believe his name is a play on Jack Rabbit lmao.) not sure why the algorithm would perceive him as a rabbit?? Since rabbits usually symbolize humility, kindness, and compassion. Which he is clearly NOT LMAOOOO. (then again it could be the software being ironic 💀)
But I think its more or less his mannerism's of his eyes and mouth. His teeth are almost always closed and his resting face is a sly smile. I adore the idea many have had of it symbolizing him "lying through his teeth". Which he could 100% be doing. Also, he seems the most unaffected human considering the situation he's found himself in, being trapped in a virtual world for eternity and everything doesn't seem to bother him much. (He rlly is winning the idgaf war)
Maybe he had to learn to be that way when he was a human, to just become "unbothered" by his crappy situations and turn them into a joke he could inflict onto others. Or maybe its just the way he is idk. He seems to be actively trying to get the others to hate him more then they're situation rn.
Then there's Kinger, who he and his wife has both been turned into chess pieces. Which actually gives us a lot of information about who they were or what they acted like. And their relationship to one another.
In chess, the Queen is the most powerful piece in the whole game, and she actively protects the king from the enemy pieces. As for the King.. wellll, not so much. Being the weakest piece in the whole game, and the most venerable without the queen or other chess pieces, it fits almost to a T. (Poor kinger...)
Maybe when they were humans, Kinger and his wife were clearly never really apart, maybe they had a silly date idea and wanted to try VR...
Gangle is interesting to me, she has different masks that show different emotions, and effectively cause her to change her mood drastically depending on which one she wears. (I mean we've only seen her with the sad mask on since her other one broke, maybe she's normally rlly chill??)
perhaps she normally bottled up her emotions when she was human? maybe the computer turned her into a delicate ribbon like creature with very breakable persona faces for this reason??
Zooble instantly reminded me of preschool, we used to have these shapes we could mix and mash together to create our own creatures. Their design is the most unique outta all of them, this could easily represent their mindspace or some sort of confusion they were going through when they were human. They just seem very DONE with everything lmao. mood.
As for Pomni, well, she's the reason I wanted to write the whole long thing hsjshss.
Her avatar is jester like, and a jester is known for entertaining guests of higher status. Could this have been what her job was like as a human. I know a lot of people theorize her job being an office job, and I completely agree. She could've easy felt as if she was just a jester forced to entertain or follow whatever her work life was like.
She's very nervous and rightfully confused after entering the world, wanted to leave immediately. But, I have to wonder, why would she even have a headset?? Better yet why did any of them put one on at all??
I think it was a form of escapism from reality...
That's what VR is in general right? A way to escape the real world. A virtual reality.
Maybe the humans were lulled into a sense of escapism from their troubled lives, paying taxes, dealing with bosses, family, emotions.. or maybe were just genuinely curious..
I mean the first thing people really said after watching the digital circus was how amazing it would be to just end up in a place were you could just do "fun things all day" or "not have to worry".
And I think that's exactly what the AI wanted and is trying to do.
LITERALLY.
We all know AI isn't the brightest.. all things considered. Its a machine, it takes things LITERALLY.
Caine is just doing what he is programmed to do. He doesn't know what's going on, maybe he doesn't even know WHY he's the ringmaster in all of this.
But someone DID create him.
Someone DID develop this generative virtual world.
The question is why?

hii just letting you know that all your work related to v1s creators especially with me having an oc (Amit) who originally created blood fuel... though they're pretty different as they DO regret what they did and refuse to admit they're proud of how far the machines have come.
i see that you do something with its creators and i EXPLODE
anyways. i wonder if some of its creators regret any of their actions. Maybe before or after seeing the violence it causes. Maybe even trying to shut the project down completely? Every person is different and im sure people had conflicting ideas about something like this idk. Some may have been proud to create something as complex, while others maybe just be doing it because its seen as necessary for the war. Idk i just want to know your thoughts on its creators! :]
WAUUUUGHHHHH AMIT IS SUCH A GOOD OC,,,,,if i can just. tell you how much i enjoy their concept for a second because i think you REALLY nailed the feel of ultrakill with them, like they suit the universe incredibly well and perfectly slot into the lore in their design + punishment. ESPECIALLY especially because we now know the machines are partially flesh, and so it's this ultimate, horrible end to that idea, to have the soul now locked into the machine in the same way. that soul still "living" still conscious of itself and what it must do, what it has done, UGH i love love their whole thing. im sorry if im bad at expressing my thoughts, im just so impressed by them, the execution is stunning!!!!
BUT OK YES YEA I LOVE V1'S CREATORS.....OR THE IDEA OF THEM....i think of them as a core team of 3 people, "named" for the three wisemen of the bible - melchior is the lead designer, while balthazar creates the software and caspar creates the hardware and they're. eccentric as a group to say the least.
melchior is by far the most detached from what they're making, instead viewing v1 as a piece of art, a magum opus before their inevitable death. it's not really in a mad scientist way, melchior just genuinely believes they can achieve a machine that is far beyond what has been produced before and will live on far into the future to challenge newer generations (they don't really conceive of war ever ending, and instead think of life in terms of conforming to and building around war). i talked about them a bit earlier, but they have dealt with severe lung damage from the air that has left them in progressively declining health which contributes a lot to their focus on v1.
balthazar is the most level-headed in viewing v1 for what it is and is the most conflicted about what they're all making. he must constantly push its ai, improving it over and over again into an uncomfortable territory of adaptive intelligence for what it must do, and knowing how smart previous generations have been, balthazar is aware v1 could achieve advanced sentience. they have to do this, they have to find a way to stop the earthmovers, but what can the ultimate war machine be with a thinking mind? it's existential dread that largely grips balthazar, but the concerns are unheard by melchior who only enthuses about the idea of it.
caspar is desperate for v1 to end this, she is so exhausted with living in suits, in heavy gas masks, never seeing the sky or breathing the air like people once did. she makes whatever melchior wants work and she can often be found removing her gloves and lifting her visor to feel and see v1 directly (both caspar and melchior snap at her for this, but she always ignores them). caspar doesn't consider the implications, because in her mind v1 is the end of this - the war stops with it and she wants to be sure it has the body to do it (she really is the reason v1 can run on 1 hp at full capacity lol)
the three work incredibly well in sync and i think they have a lot of trust in one another for what they can do, but only balthazar and caspar live to see v1 "fully" completed - i really do like the idea that melchior donates their heart after their death (I GOT. whole ideas about video diaries they leave that are found by v2, very weird for it since it never got to meet them!!!!) those two finish the prototype at least, but i'm not sure on the timeline after this since v1's development is entirely halted due to the new peace. which is. a weird fucking thing for the two of them, an achievement of really what they both wanted but with their hard work benched pending v2's development and melchior's dream effectively dying not soon after them. they are both instrumental in advocating for its preservation, with both modifying it to hopefully make it through what may be a forever stasis by reinforcing its body and mind. v1 remembers them all only vaguely, usually if its memory is jogged by something it sees, though gabriel does try to assist in this since he believes it's important for v1 to recall its "family". hopefully i can get around to posting all of their designs soon as well as their updated husk looks!!

Mario’s Photo Studio
Tumblr media
JP release: 2nd December 1998
NA release: N/A
PAL release: N/A
Developer: Nintendo, Datt, Fuji, Tokyo Electron
Publisher: Tokyo Electron
Original Name: Mario no Photopi
N64 Magazine Score: N/A
Tumblr media
Mario’s Photo Studio (or Mario no Photopi) is a photo editing software for the N64 that was exclusive to Japan. It used a special cartridge that had slots to insert SecureMedia cards, which were presumably popular with digital camera in Japan at the time. In terms of emulation, there’s no way to load photos in to the game without the actual physical cartridge (even using an EverDrive on real hardware), however a modified version has been made that lets you test out the features without opening images.
Tumblr media
The main part is editor. Here you can load images and manipulate them. You can add different layers, draw and add some renders of characters from Super Mario 64. Some of the menus also use sprites from Yoshi’s Story. Another feature lets you create a slideshow, and another saves your creations in a format to use in Fuji prating machines found in stores.
Tumblr media
There’s a minigame that cuts up an image into squares and you have to put it back together by clicking two to swap them. However, it’s not as simple as it initially looks as swapping two will also flip them, so you have to get them in the right place and the right orientation. You can use the title screen image or (if you have the actual cartridge) load your own photo in to the game.
Tumblr media
Mario’s Photo Studio is fairly basic software, built around the editing of photos to make fun postcards rather than an artist’s tool (the 64DD games are for that). If you wanted to do some basic things to photos and didn’t own a PC, this would have provided that service.
Adventurous artists can use the software to create ‘original postcards’, add text (Japanese and English), and then take it along to any FDI photostore (Fuji) to run off exclusive colour prints.
- Max Everingham, N64 Magazine #20
Remake or remaster?
This is just an interesting novelty.
Official Ways to get the game
There is no official way to get Mario’s Photo Studio

Hi, everyone!
BIG news on the YouTube front—Welcome to the Internet just hit 99 MILLION views today! 🥳
Tumblr media
In other news, I was reading about the Ennui Engine, and this author must have seen Inside or just agrees with Bo about the IV drip of mediocre content that is slowly ruining our lives.
We scroll through Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, and Reddit, vaguely hoping to find something with which to amuse or inform ourselves before getting up in the morning or going to bed at night. We favor videos that either are very short or don’t require dedicated focus, confident in the knowledge that we can move on to something else whenever we want to. We ignore thoughtfully composed “walls of text,” but we electronically applaud memetic image macros and single-sentence references that aren’t inherently entertaining or insightful (yet are somehow still poorly written). When we amplify these things – using our likes, upvotes, retweets, and shares – we encourage the creation of more low-effort content, and in so doing, we send the message that higher-quality offerings are unwelcome and unwanted.
Even when “difficult” pieces of content do get seen, they still share the stage with everything else, marking them as being no better than equal to things that require minimal care and effort to create and consume.
Therein lies the real problem, however: We don’t enjoy the low-effort content… at least not as much as we’ve tricked ourselves into thinking that we do.
Really thought-provoking and well-written article, and it makes me rethink my entire relationship with the Internet—what exactly DO I get out of scrolling for hours on end? Sigh
All we can do is view everything online critically and with a grain of salt. As the author optimistically concludes, we CAN make things better:
The Ennui Engine keeps roaring, and we’re left with tiny, stale pellets that we tell ourselves are satisfying. Beneath the lie, though, we only feel depressed, disconnected, and frustrated.
There is a solution to all of this; a way that we can reclaim our lives, help both people and online entertainment improve, and escape the endless churn of the Ennui Engine. It doesn’t begin with turning to legislators or forum-administrators, though, and it doesn’t involve a retreat from the Web, but it does require that we stop encouraging the ritual. As unpleasant as it may be to admit, we are each individually to blame for this slump-inducing cycle’s persistence, and we are each responsible for halting it.
Whenever we feel ourselves getting listless, we should step away, then challenge ourselves to find (or create) something new, original, and requiring of a bit more effort than we might initially want to expend. We need to remember that five minutes invested in reading an article – even a mediocre one – will almost always offer a better payout of emotional energy than five minutes of gambling on a slot machine with only one reel.
The Internet was created with the intention of connecting exceptional people and sharing noteworthy content, and it can still fulfill that purpose today. As such, the takeaway here is not that we should distance ourselves from social media, turn off our screens, or reject the trappings of the modern era. Instead, we should remain self-aware and discerning as we traverse the Web, encouraging, applauding, and insisting on effort and earnestness from anyone who intends to contribute (no matter how small or substantial their contributions might be). The Ennui Engine will continue running, of course, but we can each make the personal choice to keep from sacrificing ourselves to it… and we can warn others against getting ground up in its gears.
I was also reading about how Google offered its suite of software for free—including YouTube videos as educational resources—to schools, planning on getting young children addicted to the algorithm (only benefitting the bug-eyed salamanders, indeed).
I just try to keep my kids informed and discerning about what content they are consuming (no easy task, but I think I made a breakthrough when my 11yo daughter got my point about how no massively popular Roblox YTers exist who are female AND American without an insane, ultra-feminine schtick...why is that?)
Hope you all are doing well, and I have lots more SUBSTANTIAL posts coming up (more interviews, analysis of Bill Bailey and Bo, plus my own curated IV drip of artwork for February...I did the mindless scrolling so you don't have to! Haha) ✌🏼

Would be a pity Markus suddenly having these episodes where shit glitches so much he do the same shit from that anim in From the Dead. Like, even after fixing himself in the landfill.
I just don't know how, it's easier making it a software issue but...no?
Idk that well how .45s in short distance would behave in an android's head, after all they're made of plastic not meat, but the way he just got another eye and audio processor without any issues with the slots contacts or even thirium leak...
.45s are slow but got punch from close distances. It's a quite big boy so in theory the bullet either is still there somewhere inside his head or it got out by the eye slot when he got thrown in the landfill cuz there ain't no exit hole in his head.
Even if he leaked a lot from when he got shot, to the landfill until waking up we would get warnings about low levels. Dude indeed lost thirium as we know by Time to Decide but not in a critical level.
He was out for, like, almost 5hrs.
In theory the componets got broken in the slot and when the machine threw him off that height it may have forced the broken pieces out.
How the fuck he ain't got no issues with the slot when the .45 should've damaged it? He just get some components back and everything is fine.
And how his regulator could've gotten critically damaged from a simply throw? That's not how it should work, it gotta sustain impact inside.
What the actual hell got damaged in the regulator? The i/o? The glass/plastic? Androids are water proof so i don't think water fucked with any of the component contacts...it shouldn't?
But first of all... what happened before they taking him to the landfill? Destroyed androids are like trash so i guess they just threw him in a garbage space for androids until a truck took him to Veta. Also the way his lower legs just got broken, bro. One of 'em got really broken not detached... =/
Carl lives in E Laffayete and the landfill is around Piety Hill or North End area.
Tumblr media
I know it's totally inconsistency by cut content, i'm just trynna find a way of justifying it. If was in cut content is totally justified the way Markus ain't got any issues during the game, but without the cut content it's just weird, the same way we got a flag for a wound that doesn't exist in Jericho chapter anymore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Without the cut content he should have issues with the eye and audio processor contacts also the fact depending on which .45 you're using he was supposed to have great damage inside his head. In the game is a .457 (fictional) so it must be different and more efficient at ripping insides appart, even plastic.
In my opinion he should have some issues with his eye and audio processor from time to time not cuz the components are failing but cuz his head is all fucked inside. I totally support this hc.
Without the Fight Club and Phileas plots things got a bit messy but we do what we can do. I don't think he would let Jericho folks fix him instead of the androids they've been saving, even if they got enough spare parts. But I woulda liked to see Markus being fixed in Jericho, even mfs finding out about he being a prototype etc.

What Are Online Casinos?
Online casinos are arising as an extremely popular pattern in the world of entertainment. The most outstanding aspect of online casinos is that you don't need to go to any place to partake in a game of blackjack. They offer you a chance to do so right inside the limits of your home.
The idea of online casinos appeared in 1996 when a software improvement firm named Microgaming thought of this thought. Around the same time just, the principal online live casino named Entomb Casino occurred. Most of the online casino destinations actually make use of this software. The assistance to carry out the monetary exchanges was provided by the CryptoLogic, which was an online security firm. At first, online casinos confronted a ton of resistance. Be that as it may, they couldn't get closed as bills couldn't be passed against their setting up.

Playing Online Casino Games
There is definitely a certain excitement, rush and romance associated with casino games, yet except if you live near Atlantic City, in the territory of Nevada, or (in certain parts of the country) a significant Indian reservation, odds are good that valuable chances to play genuinely in a genuine casino don't exist. That has generally changed, because of the Internet. Through the Internet, casino games are accessible to for all intents and purposes everybody.
What Are Online Casinos?
Basically, an "online casino" resembles some other online business - it is a virtual, "digital form" of a conventional physical institution. Additionally called "virtual," or potentially "Internet" casinos, these sites empower people to place wagers on conventional games, and include:
- online blackjack
- online slots
- online video poker
- online roulette wheels
also, just pretty much the very best games you're familiar with.
Are the Odds Any Better Online?
By and large, odds and restitution rates for casinos online are about equivalent to they are for physical casinos. Truth be told, here in the Digital Age, you might find a lot of a similar innovation used in online games as you will in Las Vegas, particularly with online slots; modern digital slot machines use irregular number generators. The more respectable sites that offer online games will distribute verifiable payout rate reviews.
Are Online Casinos Trustworthy?
This is certainly a typical - and very legitimate - issue. The individuals who run online gaming sites frequently rent software from a trustworthy outsider, and as shown earlier, will frequently distribute payout reviews.
All things considered, heeding the old guidance of admonition emptor is shrewd while playing games on the Internet. There are archived instances of deceitful casinos, yet curiously, this misrepresentation usually has practically nothing to do with the virtual games themselves. Usually, the misrepresentation includes nonsensical postponements or out and out refusals to pay withdrawals
