Writing about Built Space | 01
“ Small architecture is not just small, it must be made and operated with our own hands and used as a homemade tool to establish a link with the world. As we have seen, one quick way of doing this is by stacking up blocks, but leaning is even easier. Of course we could build something in an open field if we had any water branches handy, but supposing there was already a wall? We could lean a sheet of plywood against it. This makeshift lean-to - the simplest of small architectures - would own its strength to the wall.
A casual stroll through the shitamachi (low city) old quarters of Tokyo reveals any number of equally casual lean-to roofs and awnings. Further ahead, my favourite Chinese religious site, the Xuangongsi Hanging Temple, clings beautifully to a cliff face in Shanxi province. Similar cliff temples can be found throughout Asia and even in Japan: the Nageirido (Thrown-in Hall) of Sanbutsuji Temple on Mount Mitoku in Tottori prefecture, built almost 1,000 years ago in the Heian period and now designated a national treasure, props up its endearing little deck unabashedly on stilts.
All architectural constructs lean on the earth in one form or another. Lean-to structure are intimately related to the idea of autonomous architecture. Yet despite attempts to break free of public infrastructure, the Water Branch House is not exactly autonomous. Without the greater strength of nature it cannot stand. No matter how strong buildings are, they are weak on their own. After the 2011 Tohoku earthquake I realised we needed to humbly acknowledge our own frailty and brush up on the gentle parasitic art of building, and leaning. ”

living small, once and for all
I personally believe living Small impacts almost every area of life. Living small is defined by the individual but I see it as being a lifestyle in reducing belongings, consumption and essentially the space and necessities incorporated into ones lifestyle. It seems that Small living is becoming a revolution, and people across the globe are becoming deeply invested. I can’t help but wonder if these investments are more tied to the thought of living Small as oppose to actually living it. From Instagram accounts and companies advocating for smaller living, living Small is becoming “popular”. Although defining a lifestyle should never be something defined as mainstream, I feel that perhaps for this movement to be effective and make people think more deeply about their choices, maybe it should be broadcasted and publicized; for what better way to reach out to our modern world then through the internet and consumerism? Perhaps this anti-consumerism fad depends on social media to progress. Nevertheless, I began to question people’s motivations for living Small. How can we live Small and advocate for it, while remaining grounded with our motives?
Living Small can often equate to buying what amounts to an RV. Which is quite a lot, except the real kicker is that RV’s don’t come with land to park them. And since mobile homes are closer to vehicles than houses, their values depreciate over time. Building costs often have more to do with the land it sits on than the building itself. The socio-economic value of living Small is definitely not reason enough to do it, which makes living Small, for some people, better stories than they make good homes. In some parts of North America, the government actually bans living in vehicles or parking your mobile, or small home just anywhere. Take Washington, for example; it’s legal to park on the side of the street, so long as I move every three days. Where is the freedom when you are constantly on the run, hopscotching around government policies? And also, which sacrifice is more beneficial to the Earth’s resources and your ideal lifestyle?
Perhaps the real issue here lies in the fact that people are jumping into living Small too soon. Or too drastically in ways that are unsustainable to maintain long term? Could there be a way to make bold lifestyle changes that are progressive instead of leaping one giant step forward and not having the wiggle room to step back or forward day-to-day? Can living small be fed to us slowly, until it becomes innate in our beings instead of going all out, broadcasting to the world and then not being able to swallow what has been chewed? And are there better methods to living Small— could co-habitation be considered a middle ground? Perhaps a way to remedy this could be a shared plot of land where Small homeowners can live in a way where sharing becomes a vital ingredient to life in a more sustainable way, whereby people can share the weight of life and help each other by helping themselves. I wonder if we remove this constant fixation with needing to be able to do everything ourselves, we take the load off a bit and make living Small a breeze, and inevitably more ecologically and socially aware.
“Maybe the big isolated homes, long lonely commutes, stacks of bills, endless hours bound to a screen— they aren’t the disease but the symptoms of something more pervasive. A sense that we don’t belong; that our place in the world is without meaning; that we can’t dissolve the boundaries of individuality and connect to the divine, to nature, to each other. “ –Mark Sundeen -emma
P.S. This is a photo of me, my sister and a friend crammed into a car on a road trip a couple years back. Sans leg room, look how happy we are- must be doing something right… right?
