au where a lot of people in hawkins are fantasy/mythological beings (dustin is werewolf, wheelers are faes, robin's a witch etc) and steve is a guy. just a human. but it doesn't stop him from being the trusted babysitter in hawkins.
claudia's been busy lately, so steve has been taking care of dustin's dinner. he's trying right now to make some edible spaghetti, waiting for dustin to come.
he hears the door open and the kid is unusually quiet. steve pokes his head out of the kitchen and sees him them.
dustin is giving steve his most innocent smile, but it doesn't take steve's attention from the being next to dustin.
he looks like a human, minus the fact that he has two large horns protruding from his forehead, blazing golden eyes, blood red fingers, and a tail. oh and there's smoke coming out of his mouth.
"uh... dustin, who's that?"
"who's who? :)"
"the man next to you??"
"oh! you meant eddie! yeah, steve say hi to eddie. eddie, say hi to steve."
the being—eddie— waves, also with a innocent smile.
"and he is–?"
"ohhe'sjustademonisummonedwiththepartytoday. he's no harm, actually."
"what?!"
so yeah, the party thought it would be fun to summon a demon and because dustin did the main act of summoning, the demon—eddie— is now bound to dustin by contract. he can't go back to hell until he finishes the deal, and in the meantime he's got nowhere to stay. and the kids can't take him in, their parents can't know about eddie. this leaves steve's.
steve's baffled, because did he just become housemates with a demon? and eddie is just curious of the human that has all those beings wrapped around his finger.

i've been reading catching fire for the first time this year and i don't, personally, think that the quarter quell was a "smart move" for snow and the capitol even if things went the way that he wanted them to and katniss and peeta and all the rest died and he got a victor he could control. sure, it would have taken out katniss. but taking out katniss wasn't actually going to be the quick fix he wanted it to be.
because even the capitol citizens were upset about all of this. the capitol citizens, who had grown so used to having pretty victors to smush together like dolls and gush over and show that people from the districts CAN do something and make their lives better. it's the american bootstraps ideal made hideously manifest.
yes, they've been fed this propaganda diet that the games are proper retribution for a crime that happened a lifetime ago, but they're also supposed to bring out these Ideals TM the capitol claims to hold to and then the Beautiful Shiny Model Minority winner gets fame and fortune and safety and a promotion into capitol society. because they beat the odds and they won all these things! they *deserve* this!
now all of the privileged masses have these strong parasocial relationships where they thought they'd see their favorite athletes become safe and glamorous and happy. the social contract says that the capitol citizens get to have these lovely dolls to play with and now he's taking their toys away in a way that shows the propaganda never held any truth in the first place. if we don't actually value these people and what they represent, then why do we actually do it? (it's the cruelty. but the average capitol citizen doesn't understand that the cruelty is the point, because it took snow years and years and years of building up that Capacity for Cruelty, and most people never get to that point. there has to be a pretty facade over this for it to run smoothly for those average citizens like the prep team. and now it's not there anymore.)
and that's not even mentioning the different sort of horror this becomes for the districts, as the idea that's been sold to the wealthier districts is that if these children win they get fame and fortune and protection for life. but you're dragging them back into the horror that was supposed to buy their eternal glory? the careers aging out this year don't even have their "chance" in the arena to make their mark and gain their fortune. they'll just be losing some of their mentors in a pointless rehash.
in the poorer districts, perhaps there is some relief because their kids are safe this year but that means their only victors are being shipped off to die instead. and then their kids who won't have a chance in hell next year! because the hunger games are a perpetual motion exploitation machine, and the only way people were able to be numbed to it was figuring out the rules and then gritting their teeth and living their lives. but the rules are out the window, now. those rules that were supposed to make this terrible system something they could navigate and grit their teeth and suffering through are being blown to bits because snow tried to stomp out the tiniest embers instead of letting them burn out.

ch2 something borrowed something blue (mafia!price x simon's sister!reader)
masterlist | next
You hate John Price because he ruined your childhood. Or at least, his father did.
Growing up as a bastard was hard. You do thank your lucky stars that you were a bastard in modern-day society, and not during some time when your mother could have had her head chopped off. It’s the small things.
Your mother was Mr. Riley’s nanny. How original.
Mrs. Riley, Simon and Tommy’s mother, did not like her husband. Smart woman. He was cruel, knew how to poke at scars until they opened and bled down bruised skin. They had an heir and a spare, neither of which she was particularly attached to. It was enough to fulfill their marriage contract, so she got to live out the rest of her days in a beachside condo in Cornwall. Simon and Tommy were raised properly, the Riley way, in Greater Manchester. In a mansion bought by blood and exploitation, guns and gold.
With the wife out of the way and two boys under five, Mr. Riley hired a nanny. The way your mother tells it, only after three glasses of wine before the sun sets, she was low on cash and desperate for a place to stay. The whispers about the Riley family were loud, but the grumbling of her stomach was louder. It’s a phrase she repeated over and over during your childhood, as you hopped from international school in Paris to private school in New York City, wherever your father decreed was safer. You tell her she doesn’t need to justify it, even now as you live with your brother and she stays countries away, but she’ll just give you that same tightlipped smile. She still doesn’t forgive herself for who your father was, so you have to forgive her for the both of you.
She couldn’t say no to Mr. Riley. Maybe it was the sight of her with his kids or her constant proximity, but he claimed he was in love. You can’t say no to the head of a gang, especially if you’re an employee. And once she became pregnant, he tightened the reins. Pulled strings to become your legal primary caregiver so she couldn’t leave the country. It was only after a robbery went wrong, where Mr. Riley lost almost a quarter of his wealth, he invited others to weigh in on the situation. Or at least, Mr. Price.
You were seven, Tommy was ten, and Simon was fourteen. Simon said he was too grown up to play with a baby like you, but Tommy always stuck around. Tommy just beat you in hide and seek, again, and frustration seeped out of your skin. He always caught you, no matter where you hid. He was counting down to another round and you were determined to win this time. There was one place he wouldn’t think of - your father’s office.
There have been a lot more men around lately. Mama had told you to keep upstairs, out of eyesight, but you wanted to win this time. Tommy was counting from sixty, too fast in your opinion, so you creeped down the stairs at warp speed. There was a secret door to Father’s office, mainly for the maids, and it had a door for your dog. Riley was huge, so the flap took up a third of the door. You were still small enough to scurry through, though it was becoming a tighter fit lately. Determined, you popped through the flap, being sure not to disturb Father. There was a chair for you to hide behind, a perfect angle to hide from the man on the other side of Father’s desk while still keeping an eye out for Tommy’s feet.
“They hit you because you’re weak.” The man’s voice was familiar. Mr. Price. He was around more and more, always bringing his annoying son John. He was sixteen and thought he was so cool, bossing around the staff like he was, well, the boss. And he never wanted to play.
“They hit us because my idiot men weren’t watchin’ the cameras.” Father replied. He sounded angry. He always snorted like a bull before he started yelling, and you could hear him huffing. “Y’ve got a bastard an’ ‘er mother yankin’ ya by the balls. She’s the help, for god sake. The scousers see an opportunity.” You knew that word. Bastard. Simon had called you bastard once, a year ago when you took his stuffed animal that he hid from Father. Mama told you it was a mean word, only said by people with too-small hearts. When Simon said it, you cried for an hour. He apologized, hugging you like a baby until the tears receded. Then, he promised to hurt anyone who said that word to you.
“What do you suggest?” Father didn’t say anything about the mean word. He was like that, he didn’t protect you like Tommy or Simon. “Send them away. Make your enemies forget about your weakness. Bring Simon into the fold.” That wasn’t Mr. Price speaking, it was John. He wanted to send you away? You prayed not to Cornwall, where Simon’s mom lived. She was scary.
“I second John. You need strength, not complication. Focusin’ on Simon learnin’ the ropes will emphasize your heir, not the help y’ forgot to wear a rubber with. ‘Least til she’s eighteen an’ can be married.” Mama wasn’t married, so you didn’t want to be either. “Appreciate the help, gentlemen. Now about the Chester deal…” You tuned them out. Sent away? You had to tell Mama. Slipping away like a cat, you ran to find Mama, not stopping even when Tommy found you. He’d won, again.
Without John’s suggestion, you might have stayed. You might have gotten a real relationship with your brothers. You might have prevented Tommy from walking into that gunfight and- that’s where the hypotheticals stopped. Who knows what would have happened? What you know is that, despite being provided for and with your mom, there was always that what if? clinging to the back of your brain.
Your father died when you were twenty-two. Months after he’d paid your last college bill, thankfully. Simon called you during your summer of freedom, a twenty-nine-year-old man with no clue how to run an empire. A lost younger brother between you. He’d promised to protect you, and that was your chance to return the favor. Family first, the Riley way.
-
Now, years later, the hate for John Price has turned from a boil to a simmer. Something you don’t think about constantly until he’s right in front of you. It’s hard to blame a man for a teenage hypothetical, but that doesn’t mean you couldn’t insult him for being a pompous git. A mafia brat. Decades of being shitty to each other have turned the cord of your relationship rotted black, a frayed string connected by the fact you can’t physically hurt the other. You’ve got no clue why he wants to marry you of all people, so you’re determined to scare him off. This should be fun.
-
“Quaint,” John mutters to Gaz, who scoffs. They took the jet, a quick hour trip, and brought Laswell, his trusted lawyer. The bookstore is off a side street in Greater Manchester, next to a cafe and a flower shop for god sake. He has to give it to Ghost; it’s a good place to clean cash or lay low. Discreet. No clue why the spitfire’s running it, though. He’s surprised it’s not gone to ruin.
The bell over the door makes a faint tinkling sound as they enter. Gaz goes first, ready for an ambush like the control freak he is, and John can see you smiling at him. It’s a smile he’s never seen, unbidden and shy. It immediately sours once John emerges, turning into a faint frown. “You actually came.” You say it like you aren’t discussing a marriage contract to tie you together for eternity. It’s been a year since John last saw you. Your meetings are infrequent, mainly in passing during weddings and funerals. He knows it’s been years since you came back to Manchester, but you finally seem to have…matured. More confident with your movements, at ease behind the counter of your bookstore. If he were a different man, your confidence would be attractive, but in this world, something about it irritates him.
He sees you pick up your phone, a battered thing, and fire off a short text. Not five seconds later, Soap and Ghost emerge from the shadows of the backroom, men in suits at their shoulders. The shop is immediately crowded, and you cringe at the change in atmosphere. “You’re lucky I closed the store today. Your vibe would freak out the customers. Come on.” John is already practicing restraint, biting his tongue so he doesn’t reply like a scorned teenager. He’s too grown for this.
Soap leads the way, opening a hidden door to the basement by tugging at a dusty bookshelf in the back. He holds the door open for everyone, trading looks with Ghost before nodding to the Price group. “What do ya do if a customer pulls that book by accident?” Gaz wonders out loud, snorting to himself as he approaches the door. “Dosnae happen, Garrick.” Gaz grins and John sighs inwardly. “Usin’ last names now, MacTavish? I can play that game too.” Gaz dips down the staircase before Soap can answer, presumably needing to have the last word. Between you and Soap, this is going to be a long meeting.
The bookstore might be old and dusty, but the basement is sleek and modern. John passes a small med bay, fully stocked, before they reach a large conference room, equipped with TVs and enough office chairs for a small army. Even Gaz lets out a low whistle, while Laswell hums thoughtfully. Kate’s probably memorizing the layout for another upgrade to her office.
As everyone sits, two waiters make their rounds, taking drink orders. He gets a tea and thanks the waiter, catching your brows furrowing after he murmurs his gratitude. Odd.
“Right so-” Soap starts, but Gaz cuts him off. “You’re a bloody barrister?” Soap practically growls at his tone. “Solicitor. Not jus’ a pretty face, Garrick.” It’s silent as the two stare, a contest only broken when Simon clears his throat. “Get on with it, haven’t got all day.” Soap starts again, mainly talking with Kate as they go through the contract. John has it practically memorized. 25% of his businesses, mainly the ones not in London, in exchange for their weight in Ghost’s gold, something he desperately needs. Relinquishing his claims to border territory between Manchester and Liverpool, something that would make his father turn in his grave, for thousands of weapons. Guns, bullets, tracking equipment - anything he can use that has removable identity numbers. It’s a deal that’ll help him win against Shepherd’s men. All for the small price of being married to you, of course.
“Ms. Riley will marry Mr. Price and produce a minimum of two children within ten years. In case of fertility struggles, one child will suffice, only with a board of doctors agreement. If infertility persists and no children are produced, we have clauses for that.” The statement rolls off Laswell’s tongue easily, but John can tell the moment it reaches your brain. Your eyebrows go sky high, and you almost stand until Simon puts a firm hand on your shoulder, keeping you in place. “Board of doctors? What, so if I can’t get pregnant, I have to inform an entire hospital just so I don’t get shot? That’s barbaric.” You spit out, and John can’t help but agree. If the situation comes to it, he wouldn’t want the future mother of his child having to humiliate herself like that. Thoughts of you being a mother are turned away, a dreary thought for another day.
John murmurs instructions to Laswell, who notes them down with ease. He can tell she approves as her shoulders relax slightly. “We can amend this line. It’ll only require one doctor, not a board, and it can be your current gyno or someone else. The matter will stay between Ms. Riley, Mr. Price, and Mr. Riley if it comes to be.” Laswell replies. You huff, irritated that John agreed, and he smirks at you from across the table. You’re so easy to tease, probably because you’re snooty and spoiled.
“What about my bookstore?” The question escapes you after another ten minutes of Laswell droning on about childcare protocol. How if there’s no child in ten years, and all avenues have been explored, the marriage will be dissolved. “What about it?” Laswell asks smoothly. Your eyes dart between her’s and John’s. “Well, I’ll hire a manager for the Riley store, but what about in London?” John considers it, running a hand through his beard. It’s a safety risk, but who knows what havoc you’ll wreak on his home if you’re bored 24/7. Something to do would be nice.
“‘Ve got a few closed storefronts I own. You could take one.” Your mouth drops. You didn’t expect him to agree, to be honest. Imagined yourself chained to his property, playing housewife night and day. “I want to own it. Buy it from you so the deed is in my name.” You cross your arms on your chest, quirking an eyebrow like it’s a challenge.
“Fine. But you’ll let it up once there’s kids.”
“Not happening.”
“First few years, at least.”
“And are you taking a few years off for paternity leave?” Well, no. But he’s running an organized crime unit of over 5,000 members and you’re running a bookstore. John can’t have other families seeing his wife working when she’s supposed to be resting or raising his heir.
“First year after every new kid. That’s what I’ll agree to.” Soap murmurs something in your ear and you sigh with defeat. “Fine. But you have to sell me the property at fair market value and you can’t use it for any business. And I get to pick any property not in use.” This seems to be the hill you’re dying on. If you were a Made Man, he’d add in flowery language, guaranteeing you the cheapest property. But he’s already taking your home and your business from you, not to mention your womb and ten years of your life. He can spare a building.
“Agreed. Next.”
Soap continues on, his leg bouncing under the table with so much force that it’s shaking. He’s eager to get out, that’s for sure, and John can’t help but wonder why. “Ms. Riley will reside with Mr. Price at his permanent London residence. If she wishes t’ leave city limits, she must request written permission.” John quirks an eyebrow. Surely you’ll bite at this one.
“I’m not even dignifying that with a response.” Is what eventually comes out of your mouth. Took you almost thirty seconds to say it. He could see you weighing your options in your mind, the price of too many amendments versus your freedom. He almost respects the move, until he remembers this is the Riley brat. Not someone to be respected.
“‘S for your safety.” He croaks out, throat dry from lack of use. Speaking to you is like breaking the fourth wall, an unsettling feeling. The full force of your glare is blazing hot, the pits of Hell contained in two eyes. “I can take care of myself. I’ve always got a gun and a man on me.” You challenge him.
“Guns run out of bullets. Men die.” He replies, smug with the fact you can’t particularly deny what he’s saying. You turn to Soap, muttering your dissent. He shakes his head, then looks over at Ghost. The bastard has his mask on, but even a blind man could see he agrees with the statement. He wants to protect his sister, a trait John knew he could rely on.
“Fine. Oral works.” You say the words like they’re bitter on your tongue, something you want to spit out. “Does it, sweetheart? Good t’ know.” You roll your eyes, then shove Soap’s shoulder for him to continue. “Can’t believe I’m marrying a manchild.” If you’d said it in front of his men, he’d have to reprimand you, but he can drop the mask in this room. He’s not going to punish his future wife this early. It would throw off the wedding atmosphere.
Laswell marks the change from written to oral permission then continues. She’s at the last few lines, thankfully. “The marriage cannot be dissolved unless in the case of maltreatment or abuse. If there is evidence of Ms. Riley cheating, 50% of the Riley Family assets will be transferred to the Price Family and the marriage will be dissolved. Any bastards will not be recognized and will be given no child support.” The word bastard echoes around the room. Laswell could say she didn’t realize the context of the word but, knowing her, it was probably used on purpose. A test.
You roll your shoulders back. Ghost’s eyes narrow into black pits. Soap’s hands clench and unclench on the table. Despite the obvious tension, there’s no immediate reaction. You don’t jump on the table and curse his ancestors or pull out a gun and start shooting. Both he expected more than the actual outcome, which is…nothing. You nod at Soap and Ghost, gesturing at them to continue.
It should be a victory. Gaz is nudging him under the table, his right-hand man all too proud that he riled up the Rileys. The feeling of success is hollow as John tracks your tense muscles, the way you turn your gaze to the contract in front of you and don’t move, even when Laswell finishes reading it. You’re just…frozen. It’s too human of a look on you, and John wonders if this is what your marriage will be like. Cold. Distant. Robotic fucking, just enough to make heirs. A fidelity clause only for you, while John can do whatever he wants as long as there aren’t any kids made. It’s a point he would have let you argue, let you add a fidelity clause for him too, but you take it on the chin. Is it punishment for the family sin you didn’t commit? The mantle of knowledge is heavy on his shoulders.
John signs. You sign. Ghost signs then hands it to the lawyers. Gaz is the witness. In five minutes, John has turned his mafia into a militarized mob and gained a wife who hates him. Every man’s dream.
Papers are gathered as the waiters clear glasses from the table. He stands only after you do, observing how Ghost has to touch your shoulder to get you to pay attention. Soap leads the way again, but John hangs back until he’s shoulder to shoulder with you. The dislike is still there, a plant that sprouted roots eons ago, but the urge to be a good husband is there as well. He was raised with the standards of chivalry, to be the picture of a gentleman. He will not treat the mother of his children like how his father treated his mother. He will be better.
“Alrigh’?” He nudges your shoulder. It snaps you out of your daydream, glassy eyes meeting his own as you take stock of the situation. “Fuckin’ mint, thanks.” It’s the most Manc thing he’s ever heard you say. “Remember bein’ promised tea, but not a biscuit t’ be found.” You snort and he’s glad for it. You seem to finally be out of whatever funk came over you. He lets you go in front of him on the staircase, keeping his eyes firmly on the sliver of skin that shows as you move and the outline of a gun tucked in your waistband. John Price does not stare at his fiancee’s arse at all. Mostly.
“Guess I’m not wife material, Price. Looks like you’re getting the shitty end of this deal.” You shoot him a cheeky grin once you’re on the main floor, and he’s glad it looks mostly genuine. You’re easier to deal with when you’re bantering, not whatever that was back there. “Jus’ bought ya for some guns, sweetheart. Not lookin’ good on the husband front, either.” You roll your eyes, biting your cheek so he doesn’t sense a laugh. The whole group is at the door now, awkwardly standing on opposite sides of the room as the two of you talk. Is this what your wedding will be like?
“I’ll, uh, see you Saturday.” At our wedding. To each other. Jesus, this is a bleak future he’s thinking of.
“See you Saturday, John.” You stand in the center of your store. Sunlight is streaming through the windows as the sun goes down, and if John were a different man, he’d tell you you look beautiful. He’d kiss your cheek, then your forehead, assuring you that your years of spats were just a form of foreplay. He’d squeeze your shoulder in reassurance, murmur a sweet nothing in your ear. Fortunately, or unfortunately, John is not that man.
“Remember, somethin’ borrowed, somethin’ blue.” He winks but there’s no charm behind it. He thinks.
“Something old, something new. A sixpence in your shoe.” You whisper it just to him, like a secret, and then turn away. Like he was never there.
John turns away, feeling oddly flustered, and doesn’t catch Gaz’s eye as they leave. He avoids Gaz’s gaze as he shakes Ghost’s and Soap’s hands. He’s still avoiding it when they get into the car, Laswell splitting off to her own chartered vehicle. It’s only when the doors close his right-hand man decides to speak.
“You’re fucked.” He says it sternly, like a teacher scolding his student. The kid’s a decade younger than John but acts like he’s his father.
“Piss off.” He’s got no idea what he’s talking about. There’s nothing between you and John. That bridge has been burned, ashes turning to dust in the wind.
Of that, he’s almost sure.

vetinari is such a fascinating character to me because you cannot simply call him evil. he has all the aesthetic trappings of the Evil Ruler: a self-proclaimed tyrant, serious black robes, a devilish goatee, the tendency to raise an eyebrow or steeple his fingers in a grim manner, the torture chambers and dungeons in his palace, his wretched little pet that he loves so much, everyone is deathly afraid to cross him for fear of the Consequences, so on and so forth...
but he's not "EVIL". he doesn't take delight in senseless violence or act cruel for cruelty's sake. he's not ambitious or hungry for power. he's never a true antagonist, and is often working on the same side as the protagonists (or it might be more accurate to describe his role as a secret third thing). he's really not an unreasonable man on the whole. if vetinari is one thing, he's a pragmatist.
he considers idealism a waste of time because he knows his subjects too well for that. he can easily understand a cruel and villainous attitude, which is not the same thing as agreeing with it: with every new development in technology or society he immediately asks, "how are people going to exploit this? how could it be used dangerously?" not because he plans on doing it himself, but because it pays to know how somebody else will. ankh-morporkians agree: love him or hate him, vetinari's system works because it meets people where they're at.
this started as a post just about vetinari but then it got me thinking.... vetinari's method is not the only successful form of leadership we see. carrot is a natural born (ahem) leader whose outlook is the polar opposite from vetinari's; he operates on the assumption that everyone has good intentions and are fundamentally good people. and because he believes it so strongly and earnestly, people can't help but believe that it must be true, hence a self-fullfilling prophecy. which is great! the world would benefit immensely from more carrots!
buuut..... you can't really run a government that way, can you? you can't just say "let's all pinky promise to be chill and act super niceys from now on ok? 🙂" as a legally binding contract for millions of people. you need something to fall back on when that contract is inevitably violated. carrot can't imagine that anyone would ever do that, but vetinari knows they will, and accounts for every possible contingency. I think what pratchett is telling us, in a nutshell, is to plan for the worst and hope for the best.
the relationship between vetinari and carrot is one I don't see discussed much (admittedly since it's not very substantial), but it's interesting to think about. in his interactions with carrot vetinari is usually bemused at best and impatient at worst, but we know he's plenty smart enough to recognize carrot's value and what he's capable of.

The Rise of DeFi: Revolutionizing the Financial Landscape
Tumblr media
Decentralized Finance (DeFi) has emerged as one of the most transformative sectors within the cryptocurrency industry. By leveraging blockchain technology, DeFi aims to recreate and improve upon traditional financial systems, offering a more inclusive, transparent, and efficient financial ecosystem. This article explores the fundamental aspects of DeFi, its key components, benefits, challenges, and notable projects, including a brief mention of Sexy Meme Coin.
What is DeFi?
DeFi stands for Decentralized Finance, a movement that utilizes blockchain technology to build an open and permissionless financial system. Unlike traditional financial systems that rely on centralized intermediaries like banks and brokerages, DeFi operates on decentralized networks, allowing users to interact directly with financial services. This decentralization is achieved through smart contracts, which are self-executing contracts with the terms of the agreement directly written into code.
Key Components of DeFi
Decentralized Exchanges (DEXs): DEXs allow users to trade cryptocurrencies directly with one another without the need for a central authority. Platforms like Uniswap, SushiSwap, and PancakeSwap have gained popularity for their ability to provide liquidity and facilitate peer-to-peer trading.
Lending and Borrowing Platforms: DeFi lending platforms like Aave, Compound, and MakerDAO enable users to lend their assets to earn interest or borrow assets by providing collateral. These platforms use smart contracts to automate the lending process, ensuring transparency and efficiency.
Stablecoins: Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies pegged to stable assets like fiat currencies to reduce volatility. They are crucial for DeFi as they provide a stable medium of exchange and store of value. Popular stablecoins include Tether (USDT), USD Coin (USDC), and Dai (DAI).
Yield Farming and Liquidity Mining: Yield farming involves providing liquidity to DeFi protocols in exchange for rewards, often in the form of additional tokens. Liquidity mining is a similar concept where users earn rewards for providing liquidity to specific pools. These practices incentivize participation and enhance liquidity within the DeFi ecosystem.
Insurance Protocols: DeFi insurance protocols like Nexus Mutual and Cover Protocol offer coverage against risks such as smart contract failures and hacks. These platforms aim to provide users with security and peace of mind when engaging with DeFi services.
Benefits of DeFi
Financial Inclusion: DeFi opens up access to financial services for individuals who are unbanked or underbanked, particularly in regions with limited access to traditional banking infrastructure. Anyone with an internet connection can participate in DeFi, democratizing access to financial services.
Transparency and Trust: DeFi operates on public blockchains, providing transparency for all transactions. This transparency reduces the need for trust in intermediaries and allows users to verify and audit transactions independently.
Efficiency and Speed: DeFi eliminates the need for intermediaries, reducing costs and increasing the speed of transactions. Smart contracts automate processes that would typically require manual intervention, enhancing efficiency.
Innovation and Flexibility: The open-source nature of DeFi allows developers to innovate and build new financial products and services. This continuous innovation leads to the creation of diverse and flexible financial instruments.
Challenges Facing DeFi
Security Risks: DeFi platforms are susceptible to hacks, bugs, and vulnerabilities in smart contracts. High-profile incidents, such as the DAO hack and the recent exploits on various DeFi platforms, highlight the need for robust security measures.
Regulatory Uncertainty: The regulatory environment for DeFi is still evolving, with governments and regulators grappling with how to address the unique challenges posed by decentralized financial systems. This uncertainty can impact the growth and adoption of DeFi.
Scalability: DeFi platforms often face scalability issues, particularly on congested blockchain networks like Ethereum. High gas fees and slow transaction times can hinder the user experience and limit the scalability of DeFi applications.
Complexity and Usability: DeFi platforms can be complex and challenging for newcomers to navigate. Improving user interfaces and providing educational resources are crucial for broader adoption.
Notable DeFi Projects
Uniswap (UNI): Uniswap is a leading decentralized exchange that allows users to trade ERC-20 tokens directly from their wallets. Its automated market maker (AMM) model has revolutionized the way liquidity is provided and traded in the DeFi space.
Aave (AAVE): Aave is a decentralized lending and borrowing platform that offers unique features such as flash loans and rate switching. It has become one of the largest and most innovative DeFi protocols.
MakerDAO (MKR): MakerDAO is the protocol behind the Dai stablecoin, a decentralized stablecoin pegged to the US dollar. MakerDAO allows users to create Dai by collateralizing their assets, providing stability and liquidity to the DeFi ecosystem.

so people just gonna ignore the fact that after they finish cleaning up the new hotel and the song Angel is just gonna go back to Valentino to get abused and exploited? Why doesn’t nobody care that he’s getting abused? Why hasn’t Charlie done anything the past 6 months to help him? Why isn’t husk or Cherri helping him out? He has to stand up for himself and he and his dad boyfriend have to fight the rapist together? Only love can save him? Love is the only way to get redeemed? I hate this fucking finale. Viv said it would take a year in half or two years for season 2 but i honestly don’t trust her. She’s lies too much. Now I’m hearing it won’t be out till 2027 from that screen rant article
Yeah Angel’s whole situation near the end of the season really signifies how brain dead these characters are and how Viv as a writer ain’t the exactly brightest bulb. Just like in Helluva Boss, none of her characters use their fucking brains. If this show was smart Charlie would have spoken up about Angel’s abuse, or done something HERSELF considering she’s the most powerful demon besides her dad but oh right, Viv is an idiot who doesn’t know how to use her characters to her advantage- O-Oh I mean…….Charlie’s a doormat. Even then she could have immediately went to Lucifer and asked for help. This is honestly why tackling a very dark theme in a show like this doesn’t work because you can’t just tell us that Angel is literally trapped in an abusive relationship and can’t escape due to the contract and just…gloss it over later. If Lucifer is at the top then I’m sure he has the power to break demon contracts, at least that’s what I’m assuming since the world building for this show is fucking nonexistent.
Angel’s arc itself is a mess too but I’ll get more into that once I release my review post I’m working on.

I like Huey as a character, but I personally think he was a sociopath. Little dude rarely smiled and was an asshole at times.
He was even labeled a domestic terrorist by his own grandfather and it’s says this on his wiki too.
Oh boy, where do I begin?
Tumblr media
While I do not have a major in psychology or have the best understanding of a person’s mind, I can tell you right now that Huey is far from a sociopath.
You are correct, he rarely showcased emotions throughout “The Boondocks,” often having a scowl or a blank expression on his face. I only would have to count with one hand on how many times he smiled in the show.
Tumblr media
I will also agree with him being unlikable at times, especially in the first season. He was mean towards Jazmine in the beginning, especially when he tells her to eat something out of the dumpster when she calls out his hypocrisy in “The Real” episode.
Huey is also shown to be a bit of a control freak. In the “A Huey Freeman Christmas” episode, he catches the students that were helping him with his play having a dance party instead of working, he fired all of them. The teacher tries to tell him that he couldn’t do that, but he simply holds up the contract document and tells the kids to get out. He also shows to be frustrated with the actors when they perform a scene that isn’t up to par for him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s even implied that he has a terrifying temper. In the Season 3 episode entitled “The Red Ball,” Robert points out that Huey didn’t like to be laughed at. It cuts to a scene of the crowd poking fun at him for his team having a low score, and he violently throws the ball to one of the opponents’ teammates. He’s led to believe that he caused permanent damage to the girl, but that was later revealed that it was a lie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this same episode, he does the same thing to the opposite team when he heard them mocking him for believing Ming’s lies.
Despite him being more well behaved than Riley and didn’t have to get disciplined as much as he did by their grandfather, Huey definitely got into trouble as well. He had a smart mouth, got into fights, and had no problem being a menace as well.
Now as far as you mentioning him being a domestic terrorist, there’s no signs to confirm that he really was one. He wasn’t out in the world actively trying to cause harm to anyone. Did he go extreme at time? Yes. But, he had good intentions.
With all of that said, to label his character as someone who lacks emotions and have no regards to others is harsh.
There are plenty of examples of people in the media and in real life that are sociopaths. The Joker, Eric Cartman, Ted Bundy are just a few that fit that description.
Huey Freeman doesn’t.
If you pay attention to the show, Huey can be considered the most down to earth character. I can also argue that other than Jazmine, he has the biggest heart.
Example #1: “The Block Is Hot”
Jazmine was being exploited by Ed Wuncler for her lemonade stand. She was investing in purchasing a pony, and Ed manipulates her into working for him. Huey sees right through his facade, and tried to tell her that he’s a crook. Despite Jazmine snapping at him, he still looked out for her and even organized a protest. The ending gets chaotic, but it shows that he truly cared about her well being.
Tumblr media
Example #2: “Fried Chicken Flu”
Huey’s intentions was to finish building a generator for himself, Riley, and their grandfather if things got bad.
Jazmine: “What about everyone else?”
Huey: “I can’t save everyone else. If I do, I end up saving no one.”
Tumblr media
That doesn’t sound like someone who is a sociopath. Had Huey been one, he wouldn’t have even thought about his family. Only himself.
In this scene, Jazmine persuades him into letting her stay with them, and he eventually does despite a little bit of hesitation. Later on in the episode, almost all of their friends stay in the house despite his initial protest and how he feared that they would run out of food, water and power.
The kid even made a whole plan for everyone to read. Does that sound like a sociopath to you?
Example #3: “The Passion Of Reverend Ruckus”
In this episode, Huey has plans on getting his friend, Shabazz, to escape from death row after being accused of a murder he wasn’t apart of. He was willing to put himself in harms way to get his friend out of prison, and even threatened to blackmail someone in the government for having a same sex relationship. Again, he did go overboard at times, but you can tell that he just wanted Shabazz out.
Tumblr media
There’s plenty of more examples that shows that Huey cared for people deeply, but we’ll be here all day if I list them out.
In conclusion, Huey Freeman is not a sociopath. He isn’t easy to figure out, and that one of the things that makes him one of the most compelling characters in the series. This also leads to misunderstanding about him as well, especially from people who only take this show as a comedy.
I’m not saying that you have to like Huey in order to enjoy the series. I’ve known plenty of people who preferred other characters like Riley, Ed Wuncler The Third, or even Uncle Ruckus. What I am saying is that you can’t be quick to put him in the category of those who actually fit the criteria of a sociopath, especially when you haven’t sat down to actually understand who he is and what he stands for.

Resonance (Jiyan x Fem!Reader x Calcharo) : Chapter 3
Tumblr media
Who would you choose in a world where love and duty collided, and where the heart's desires clashed with the demands of fate? The unspoken love of Jiyan, who has known you since childhood, or the fiery passion that Calcharo harbors for you despite the shadows of his past?
Chapter 1 : https://www.tumblr.com/s3fka/780595993139953664/resonance-jiyan-x-femreader-x-calcharo
Chapter 2 : https://www.tumblr.com/s3fka/780608114576769024/resonance-jiyan-x-femreader-x-calcharo-chapter-2
Tumblr media
"It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Calcharo." Your gaze remained unwavering as you displayed no sign of fear in front of the ruthless Mercenary. "You know you're quite notorious in the Capital." You added, smirking, yet your eyes remained fixed on him.
"You haven't answered my question." Calcharo reiterated, pressing his blade against your throat, causing a trickle of blood to escape.
"I'm here to arrest you. Reports have reached the Capital alleging that your group is not only mistreating the innocent but also exploiting and killing them." You stated firmly, your piercing glare reflecting your anger towards him.
Calcharo tightened his grip on his blade, feeling a surge of indignation at the disrespect shown towards the tarnished reputation of the Ghost Hounds by these impostors. He shifted his gaze towards the fake Mercenaries, his expression unreadable, yet the intent to kill them was unmistakable.
"I've been tracking these imposters for days now, turning down high-paying contracts in the process. The trouble and disruption they've caused me are worth a year's fortune, and I won't let it go unpunished." he declared coldly, each word cutting through the air like a sharp blade.
He observed you carefully, he couldn't sense the slightest hint of deception coming from you. Calcharo wasn't an idealist, he readily admitted to doing immoral things, however, treating innocent civilians harshly was never a part of his strategy.
"You hear me, Officer?"
In response to your accusation, Calcharo scanned the fake Mercenaries again.
"These..." he paused, his hand tightening on the hilt of his blade, "...are not my men. They're just frauds seeking profit and fame."
He stepped back, his blade leaving a trail of blood on your neck. And at the same time, his eyes never withdrawing on the fake Mercenaries.
"Your information is outdated, and I'll ensure these rats meet their end accordingly."
He approached the closest of the imposters and, without missing a beat, slashed his neck, sending blood splattering across the place.
Calcharo fixed his gaze back on you, the fervor in his eyes had not diminished.
"My dealings with the innocent have always been... profitable for them. I'm sure you'd understand. Unless you're here to throw me in prison, I'm afraid I'm not going anywhere, Officer."
The tension was thick, and the smell of blood permeated the air. One could clearly hear the heartbeats of the fake Mercenaries, their fear now culminating in a frenzied desire to flee the situation.
But before the female bandit could make a move to escape, Calcharo grabbed her by the hair and swiftly plunged his blade into her stomach.
One by one, he ruthlessly killed all of them in front of you.
"Now, as I was saying." he lifted one blood-stained blade back towards you, "You've come to the wrong place. Your accusations are misguided. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Capital wouldn't be dumb enough to send only one Officer to arrest me, would they?"
He glanced at the bodies laying on the ground, the sight of so much blood painted a gruesome yet satisfying portrait in his mind.
"If you're smart, you'd go back to Jinzhou and remedy your mistakes."
His voice resonated in the air brimmed with confidence and arrogance, a true pleasure of dominating such a situation.
"I hate it when someone points their filthy blade at me." You sarcastically exclaimed before deftly intercepting the attack aimed at his back. Calcharo's silver eyes widened as you swiftly defended him from an unforeseen blow. He briefly acknowledged your swiftness, impressed.
Now, both you and Calcharo found yourselves surrounded by a multitude of Tacet Discords. Having already used his Liberation skill on the Inferno Rider, the outcome of the situation now depended solely on your raw fighting abilities. You were uncertain how long you could endure the onslaught, leaving Calcharo with no option but to cooperate with you.
In that moment, you fought with him side by side, both of your movements harmonizing in perfect synchrony as though you had been battling together for an eternity.
You moved as if guided by an unseen force. Calcharo's blade trailed with lightning, while your flame effectively dispelled the shadows of the Tacet Discords. In the heat of battle, there was a brief moment when your blades clashed, a blaze and a glimmer that lit up the darkness. As the Tacet Discords swarmed around you, Calcharo's movements shifted to match yours, both of your fighting styles now mirroring each other, like a dance of death.
Tumblr media
[Meanwhile, at Desorock Highlands...]
Jiyan was aiding the Rangers in distributing water and rations when he noticed your assistant conversing with a soldier at the field. Zhi Yu was seemingly looking for the General. Jiyan immediately made his way over to him, "Zhi Yu, what brought you here?" Jiyan asked, his eyes narrowing in concern. As Zhi Yu filled Jiyan in about your plan to capture the Ghost Hounds by yourself, Jiyan's eyes widened in shock. "What?! We should stop her before she reaches them!" Jiyan turned around, his eyes scanning his surroundings as he took a deep breath. "Qiang! Gather the remaining forces, we'll be on our way to pick up The Secretary of Justice and hunt down this Mercenary group alongside her."
Qiang saluted sharply, his armor glinting under the moonlight. "General, the remaining forces are assembled and ready for your orders. Two companies of the Vanguard, along with the Reserve Forces, have been equipped for heavy combat and are awaiting your command."
Jiyan nodded approvingly as he swiftly mounted his horse, "Well done, Lieutenant. We have no time to waste. Our destination is the Ghost Hounds' last known location. We must reach the Secretary of Justice before she engages with the Mercenaries alone. Lieutenant, have the scouts ride ahead and scout the path."
"At once, General!" Qiang saluted before galloping ahead, his horse's hooves pounding the ground as he rode to issue orders.
"What on earth is she thinking?" Jiyan furrowed his brows in confusion as he urged his steed to move forward.
Tumblr media
[Port City Of Guixu]
You and Calcharo defended each other's backs against the Tacet Discord's attacks, disregarding the fact that both of you adhered to different codes. You upheld the law, while Calcharo lived as an outlaw.
As your blades slashed through a Tacet Discord, he couldn't help but comment, "Officer, you fight with the tenacity and spirit of a seasoned Mercenary." The compliment meant more than flattery, it was a tribute to your prowess.
"You've got guts to liken me to one of your kind. I am an Officer of the Law, not a ruthless Mercenary." You retorted, scoffing. Calcharo smirked in response, finding amusement in your words.
Suddenly, a Tacet Discord's shadowy blade aimed at Calcharo from the front, you intercepted the attack, your flames scorching the blade to ashes. Calcharo wasn't going to be outdone, an electric wall surrounded both of you in defense, sending multiple Tacet Discords to their demise. You and Calcharo's synergy was a sight to behold. It was a strange partnership, but it couldn't have been more harmonious under the moonlit sky.
Soon, the last Tacet Discord was unrecognizable, having been torn into pieces as the dreadful fight came to a halt, leaving both of you bathed in the scent of ash, sweat, and the remnants of monsters. The silence, though unsettling, opened up the opportunity to observe your surroundings.
Calcharo's silver orbs scanned yours with newfound respect, acknowledging the skill that you wielded. His voice echoed hollow as he broke the silence. "Impressive."
Though intended as flattery, you distrusted every word he spoke.
"So the rumors were true. The Leader of the Ghost Hounds is undeniably a formidable and merciless Resonator." You gazed at him, your chest rising and falling as you struggled to catch your breath.
"This is no rumor, Officer. I live and breathe the reputation I've built. The Ghost Hounds, fierce and unyielding in the face of adversities." Calcharo's chest swelled with pride as he spoke of his group. The Tacet Discords were merely a taste of what the Ghost Hounds could handle. You both stood face to face, your body still hummed from the battle, your eyes locked onto Calcharo, unyieldingly examining the man that stood before you. "I'll take my reward as I like. We're both aware that you couldn't subdue me or my men. And as for you, Officer. You fought well tonight." Calcharo never bragged, and flattery from him meant far more weight than a common Mercenary would ever give.
As Calcharo sensed the approaching soldiers and horses a few miles away, he chose to conclude your conversation then and there. "It appears your reinforcements have arrived." he smirked, his gaze fixed on Ryou, causing confusion for you as you scanned the area without spotting anyone nearby. "This is where we part ways, Officer." he stated, sheathing his blade. "Perhaps our paths will cross again someday." Calcharo added, casting a last glance at you before vanishing into the shadows.
He left you there, speechless. Denying you the opportunity to utter a single word in response.
Tumblr media
[A few minutes later...]
"Y/N!" Jiyan exclaimed as soon as he saw you standing in the midst of a desolated area, with four lifeless bodies strewn around you. "Are you alright?! What happened here?!" The General swiftly dismounted his horse and approached you. Jiyan sensed that a recent battle had taken place in the vicinity. He could still discern the lingering echoes of the Tacet Discord's presence that remained in the air.
"You're shaking." he prompted, waiting for you to reply as he gently squeezed your arm. You seemed momentarily lost in thoughts, but Jiyan's touch brought you back to reality, snapping you out of the trance. "J-Jiyan." you mumbled, only then realizing his presence.
You wasted no time and immediately told Jiyan everything that happened.
"Why did you act on your own?! You were well aware of the danger posed by the Ghost Hounds. If your intention was to apprehend them, a more strategic approach was necessary." Jiyan reprimanded you, his frustration showing in his tone. He couldn't fathom why you would attempt to handle a situation like this on your own, especially knowing the risks.
"Jiyan, I believed immediate action was necessary. Whether they were the real Ghost Hounds or not, my concern is the safety of our citizens. So, please, don't give me that 'soldier' look." You glared at him, your brows knitted and arms crossed. You were perfectly aware of the consequences. "All I can say is, if you have the guts to do something about this Mercenary group, then I am more than ready to stand beside you to finish what you started. " Jiyan had the last say, only nodding at that.
You understood that Jiyan's sole concern was for your well-being. "Look at you! You're covered in cuts and bruises!" He exclaimed, taking your arm gently to inspect it.
"You should've asked for help. You weren't meant to face this alone. You know the risks, like I do." As he spoke, he carefully lifted up your top to inspect the wound he found on your back. After he made sure the wound wasn't life-threatening, he grabbed a healing pill from his pouch, popping one into your mouth. "Remember to stay on top of your health." he said, his voice deep with worry.
"I will not let this happen again. From now on, if you wish to take matters into your own hands, please include me in those plans." Jiyan carefully placed a plaster on your wound after disinfecting it.
"Okay." You acknowledged that it would be futile to debate with the General, yet as always, you remained resolute in following your decisions regardless of others' approval.
After securing the area and retrieving the bandits' corpses, Jiyan ordered everyone to regroup at their base in the Desorock Highlands.
"As for you, Madam Secretary, I will personally escort you back to Jinzhou to ensure your injuries are properly treated." Jiyan guided your horse as the rest of his army left the site.

Lani remember the unconventional darlings for the jingrenheng trio? Now I noticed that a way to "shackle" the general is called the Sampo method.
Sampo method: Have someone indebted to you until those debts piled up.
Imagine if you helped the Luofu and the cloud knights multiple times with your wealth, and the Luofu owed you quite a huge debt. If Jingyuan were to do anything to you, you can and will use the debt against him. If you want Jingyuan to pay for one of the debts by having him keep his distance from you (he seems clingy), he has to do it. And even if he obliges to your request, the Luofu still has tons of other debts to you lol.
It's called the Sampo method because unlike Topaz you don't immediately collect said debts, you do it if you need certain favors and the likes. Quite the strategic darling I must say.
I doubt this actually works. Darling is facing an alliance of space civilizations. Will using debt repayment to get Jing Yuan to stop some of his clingy behaviors really work👀? But it would make sense if darling was protected by some organization… Many factions in the HSR universe are protected by aeons. Darling is smart about this.
You: Listen, your hologram visits my room every night. You must stop. Then we can discuss deleting that debt.
Jing Yuan: Ah…T_T Okay… (stop looking at your panties)
Even if Jing Yuan shows cute but sad expressions such as "T_T", he doesn't mean it. He was just planning for next time. You have to be very careful not to expose any flaws, because the general will definitely exploit some of the contract loopholes…

As digital scamming explodes in Southeast Asia, including so called “pig butchering” investment scams, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) issued a comprehensive report this week with a dire warning about the rapid growth of this criminal ecosystem. Many digital scams have traditionally relied on social engineering, or tricking victims into giving away their money willingly, rather than leaning on malware or other highly technical methods. But researchers have increasingly sounded the alarm that scammers are incorporating generative AI content and deepfakes to expand the scale and effectiveness of their operations. And the UN report offers the clearest evidence yet that these high tech tools are turning an already urgent situation into a crisis.
In addition to buying written scripts to use with potential victims or relying on templates for malicious websites, attackers have increasingly been leaning on generative AI platforms to create communication content in multiple languages and deepfake generators that can create photos or even video of nonexistent people to show victims and enhance verisimilitude. Scammers have also been expanding their use of tools that can drain a victim’s cryptocurrency wallets, have been manipulating transaction records to trick targets into sending cryptocurrency to the wrong places, and are compromising smart contracts to steal cryptocurrency. And in some cases, they’ve been purchasing Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet systems to help power their efforts.
“Agile criminal networks are integrating these new technologies faster than anticipated, driven by new online marketplaces and service providers which have supercharged the illicit service economy,” John Wojcik, a UNODC regional analyst, tells WIRED. “These developments have not only expanded the scope and efficiency of cyber-enabled fraud and cybercrime, but they have also lowered the barriers to entry for criminal networks that previously lacked the technical skills to exploit more sophisticated and profitable methods.”
For years, China-linked criminals have trafficked people into gigantic compounds in Southeast Asia, where they are often forced to run scams, held against their will, and beaten if they refuse instructions. Around 200,000 people, from at least 60 countries, have been trafficked to compounds largely in Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos over the last five years. However, as WIRED reporting has shown, these operations are spreading globally—with scamming infrastructure emerging in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and West Africa.
Most prominently, these organized crime operations have run pig butchering scams, where they build intimate relationships with victims before introducing an “investment opportunity” and asking for money. Criminal organizations may have conned people out of around $75 billion through pig butchering scams. Aside from pig butchering, according to the UN report, criminals across Southeast Asia are also running job scams, law enforcement impersonation, asset recovery scams, virtual kidnappings, sextortion, loan scams, business email compromise, and other illicit schemes. Criminal networks in the region earned up to $37 billion last year, UN officials estimate. Perhaps unsurprisingly, all of this revenue is allowing scammers to expand their operations and diversify, incorporating new infrastructure and technology into their systems in the hope of making them more efficient and brutally effective.
For example, scammers are often constrained by their language skills and ability to keep up conversations with potentially hundreds of victims at a time in numerous languages and dialects. However, generative AI developments within the last two years—including the launch of writing tools such as ChatGPT—are making it easier for criminals to break down language barriers and create the content needed for scamming.
The UN’s report says AI can be used for automating phishing attacks that ensnare victims, the creation of fake identities and online profiles, and the crafting of personalized scripts to trick victims while messaging them in different languages. “These developments have not only expanded the scope and efficiency of cyber-enabled fraud and cybercrime, but they have also lowered the barriers to entry for criminal networks that previously lacked the technical skills to exploit sophisticated and profitable methods,” the report says.
Stephanie Baroud, a criminal intelligence analyst in Interpol’s human trafficking unit, says the impact of AI needs to be considered as part of a pig butchering scammer’s tactics going forward. Baroud, who spoke with WIRED in an interview before the publication of the UN report, says the criminal’s recruitment ads that lure people into being trafficked to scamming compounds used to be “very generic” and full of grammatical errors. However, AI is now making them appear more polished and compelling, Baroud says. “It is really making it easier to create a very realistic job offer,” she says. “Unfortunately, this will make it much more difficult to identify which is the real and which is the fake ads.”
Perhaps the biggest AI paradigm shift in such digital attacks comes from deepfakes. Scammers are increasingly using machine-learning systems to allow for real-time face-swapping. This technology, which has also been used by romance scammers in West Africa, allows criminals to change their appearance on calls with their victims, making them realistically appear to be a different person. The technology is allowing “one-click” face swaps and high-resolution video feeds, the UN’s report states. Such services are a game changer for scammers, because they allow attackers to “prove” to victims in photos or real-time video calls that they are who they claim to be.
Using these setups, however, can require stable internet connections, which can be harder to maintain within some regions where pig butchering compounds and other scamming have flourished. There has been a “notable” increase in cops seizing Starlink satellite dishes in recent months in Southeast Asia, the UN says—80 units were seized between April and June this year. In one such operation carried out in June, Thai police confiscated 58 Starlink devices. In another instance, law enforcement seized 10 Starlink devices and 4,998 preregistered SIM cards while criminals were in the process of moving their operations from Myanmar to Laos. Starlink did not immediately respond to WIRED’s request for comment.
“Obviously using real people has been working for them very well, but using the tech could be cheaper after they have the required computers” and connectivity, says Troy Gochenour, a volunteer with the Global Anti-Scam Organization (GASO), a US-based nonprofit that fights human-trafficking and cybercrime operations in Southeast Asia.
Gochenour’s research involves tracking trends on Chinese-language Telegram channels related to carrying out pig butchering scams. And he says that it is increasingly common to see people applying to be AI models for scam content.
In addition to AI services, attackers have increasingly leaned on other technical solutions as well. One tool that has been increasingly common in digital scamming is so-called “crypto drainers,” a type of malware that has particularly been deployed against victims in Southeast Asia. Drainers can be more or less technically sophisticated, but their common goal is to “drain” funds from a target’s cryptocurrency wallets and redirect the currency to wallets controlled by attackers. Rather than stealing the credentials to access the target wallet directly, drainers are typically designed to look like a legitimate service—either by impersonating an actual platform or creating a plausible brand. Once a victim has been tricked into connecting their wallet to the drainer, they are then manipulated into approving one or a few transactions that grant attackers unintended access to all the funds in the wallet.
Drainers can be used in many contexts and with many fronts. They can be a component of pig butchering investment scams, or promoted to potential victims through compromised social media accounts, phishing campaigns, and malvertizing. Researchers from the firm ScamSniffer, for example, published findings in December about sponsored social media and search engine ads linked to malicious websites that contained a cryptocurrency drainer. The campaign, which ran from March to December 2023 reportedly stole about $59 million from more than 63,000 victims around the world.
Far from the low-tech days of doing everything through social engineering by building a rapport with potential victims and crafting tricky emails and text messages, today’s scammers are taking a hybrid approach to make their operations as efficient and lucrative as possible, UN researchers say. And even if they aren’t developing sophisticated malware themselves in most cases, scammers are increasingly in the market to use these malicious tools, prompting malware authors to adapt or create hacking tools for scams like pig butchering.
Researchers say that scammers have been seen using infostealers and even remote access trojans that essentially create a backdoor in a victim’s system that can be utilized in other types of attacks. And scammers are also expanding their use of malicious smart contracts that appear to programmatically establish a certain agreed-upon transaction or set of transactions, but actually does much more. “Infostealer logs and underground data markets have also been critical to ongoing market expansion, with access to unprecedented amounts of sensitive data serving as a major catalyst,” Wojcik, from the UNODC, says.
The changing tactics are significant as global law enforcement scrambles to deter digital scamming. But they are just one piece of the larger picture, which is increasingly urgent and bleak for forced laborers and victims of these crimes.
“It is now increasingly clear that a potentially irreversible displacement and spillover has taken place in which organized crime are able to pick, choose, and move value and jurisdictions as needed, with the resulting situation rapidly outpacing the capacity of governments to contain it,” UN officials wrote in the report. “Failure to address this ecosystem will have consequences for Southeast Asia and other regions.”

Resonance (Jiyan x Fem!Reader x Calcharo) [Chapter 3 : Ghost Hounds]
"It's a pleasure to finally meet the Leader of the Ghost Hounds in person." Your gaze remained unwavering as you displayed no sign of fear in front of the Ruthless Mercenary. "You know you're quite notorious in the Capital." you added, smirking, yet your eyes remained fixed on him.
"You haven't answered my question." Calcharo reiterated, pressing his blade against your throat, causing a trickle of blood to escape.
"I'm here to detain and question you about the actions of the Ghost Hounds in recent weeks.
In response to your accusation, Calcharo scanned the fake mercenaries again, his cold smile slowly emerging.
He approached the closest of the imposters and, without missing a beat, slashed his neck, sending blood splattering across the place, a clear show of what was to come.
"Now, as I was saying." he lifted one blood-stained blade back towards Mei, "You've come to the wrong place. Your accusations are misguided, and your information is peculiarly outdated. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Capital wouldn't be dumb enough to send only one officer to detain me, would they?"
He glanced at the body laying on the ground, the sight of so much blood painted a gruesome yet satisfying portrait to his mind.
"If you're smart, you'd go back to Jinzhou and remedy your mistake."
His voice resonated in the air brimmed with confidence and arrogance, a true pleasure of dominating such a situation.
"I hate it when someone points their filthy blade in my direction." you sarcastically exclaimed before deftly intercepting the attack aimed at his back. Calcharo's silver eyes widened as you swiftly defended him from an unforeseen blow. He briefly acknowledged your swiftness, impressed.
Now, both of you found yourselves surrounded by a multitude of Tacet Discords.
In the heat of battle, there was a brief moment when your swords clashed, a blaze and a glimmer that lit up the darkness. As the Tacet Discords swarmed around you, Calcharo's movements shifted to match yours, your fighting styles now mirroring each other, like a dance of death.

[Meanwhile, at the Desorock Highlands...]
Jiyan was aiding the Rangers in distributing water and rations when he noticed your assistant conversing with a soldier at the field. Zhi Yu was seemingly looking for the General. Jiyan immediately made his way over to him, "Zhi Yu, what brought you here? What's the matter?" Jiyan asked, his eyes narrowing in concern. As Zhi Yu filled Jiyan in about your plan to capture the Ghost Hounds by yourself, Jiyan's eyes flashed fire. "I'll be damned. I'll be there with her. She's not stupid, we should stop her before she reaches them." Jiyan turned around, his eyes scanning his surroundings as he took a deep breath. "Gather the remaining forces, we'll be on our way to pick her up and hunt down this mercenary group alongside her."
"What on earth is she thinking?" Jiyan furrowed his brows in confusion as he swiftly mounted his horse.
He asked Zhi Yu about your recent problems in the Capital, and Zhi Yu confided in him that you had failed to protect some innocents a few days prior, leading to their untimely death due to incorrect judgments. Furthermore, you were also feeling the pressure from the Ghost Hounds causing disturbances around Huanglong.
Jiyan realized that this was likely the reason for your somber demeanor the previous night. He felt selfish for sharing his own troubles with you, knowing that you were also grappling with your own issues that were weighing you down.
"Hya!!!" Jiyan urged his horse to go faster. His sole focus at that moment was ensuring your safety.
~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~
[Port City Of Guixu]
Both you and Calcharo defended each other's backs against the TDs' attacks, disregarding the fact that you each adhered to different codes. You upheld the law, while Calcharo lived as an outlaw.
As your sword slashed through a TD, he couldn't help but comment, "Officer, you fight with the tenacity and spirit of a seasoned Mercenary." The compliment meant more than flattery, a tribute to your prowess.
"You've got guts to liken me to one of your kind. I am an Officer of the Law, not a ruthless Mercenary."you retorted, scoffing. Calcharo smirked in response, finding amusement in your words.
Suddenly, a Tacet Discords' shadowy blade aimed at Calcharo from the front, you intercepted the attack, your flames scorching the blade to ashes. Calcharo wasn't going to be outdone, an electric wall surrounded both of you in defense, sending multiple TDs to their demise. You and Calcharo's synergy was a sight to behold. It was a strange partnership, but it couldn't have been more harmonious under the moonlit sky.
Soon, the last TD was unrecognizable, having been torn into pieces as the dreadful fight came to a halt, leaving both of you bathed in the scent of ash, sweat, and the remnants of TDs. The silence, though unsettling, opened up the opportunity to observe your surroundings.
Calcharo's silver orbs scanned yours with newfound respect, acknowledging the skill that you wielded. His voice echoed hollow as he broke the silence: "Impressive."
The Ghost Hounds, fierce and unyielding in the face of adversity." Calcharo's chest swelled with pride as he spoke of his group. The Tacet Discords were merely a taste of what the Ghost Hounds could handle. They stood face to face, your body still hummed from the battle, your eyes locked onto Calcharo, each unyieldingly examining the other. "I'll take my reward as I like. We're both aware that you couldn't subdue me or my men."
"And as for you, Officer. You fought well tonight." Calcharo never bragged, and flattery from him meant far more weight than a common Mercenary would ever give.
As Calcharo sensed the approaching soldiers and horses a mile away, he chose to conclude your conversation then and there.  "It appears your reinforcements have arrived." he smirked, his gaze fixed on you, causing confusion for you as you scanned the area without spotting anyone nearby. "This is where we part ways, Officer." he stated, sheathing his blade. "Perhaps our paths will cross again someday." Calcharo added casting a last glance at you before vanishing into the shadows.
He left you there, speechless. Denying you the opportunity to utter a single word in response.
~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~
[A few minutes later...]
"Y/N!" Jiyan exclaimed as soon as he saw you standing in the midst of a desolated area, with four lifeless bodies strewn around you. "Are you alright? What happened here?" The General swiftly dismounted his horse and approached you. Jiyan sensed that a recent battle had taken place in the vicinity. He could still discern the lingering echoes of the TD's presence that remained in the air.
"You're shaking." he prompted, waiting for you to reply as he gently placed his hand on your shoulder. You seemed momentarily lost in thoughts, but Jiyan's touch brought you back to reality, snapping you out of the trance. "J-Jiyan."you mumbled, only then realizing his presence. "I'm sorry. A lot has happened earlier."
You wasted no time, and told Jiyan everything.
"Why did you act on your own?
You understood that Jiyan's sole concern was foryour well-being.

US Constitution - A Critique and Upgrade Options
SACCO & VANZETTI PRESENT:
THE CONSTITUTION IN FIRE AND CODE
A hard-nosed, ethical teardown of America's source code BASE SYSTEM: U.S. CONSTITUTION v1.0.1787
VANZETTI: The Constitution is not sacred. It’s a contract—one written by 55 elite white men, many of whom owned humans, and none of whom trusted the masses.
It’s a political OS designed to stabilize a fragile post-revolutionary elite consensus. It featured:
Separation of Powers: Isolation of functions to prevent autocracy, but also to slow democracy.
Checks and Balances: Not equilibrium—just distributed veto points.
Enumerated Powers: Core federal functions, tightly scoped.
Elastic Clause: An escape hatch for future relevance, designed to expand federal power slowly.
But its core failure? It was engineered for a low-bandwidth, low-population, literate-male landowning republic. It has not been significantly refactored since muskets and messengers. It is a creaking system straining under incompatible load.
SACCO: This wasn’t “for the people.” It was designed to keep the people contained. That was the function. The Senate was an elite kill switch. The Electoral College? A manual override in case democracy got uppity.
It’s not a broken system. It’s a functioning oligarchy framework with ceremonial democratic syntax.
BILL OF RIGHTS: PATCH OR PROP?
VANZETTI: The Bill of Rights was a retrofit—a patch to suppress anti-federalist rage. It formalized personal liberties but offered no systemic guarantees. It assumes good-faith actors will respect vague principles like “unreasonable” and “excessive.” No enforcement layer. No recursion. Just faith.
They are declarative rights. Not executable rights.
SACCO: You have the right to speak, sure. But no right to reach. You can protest, unless the city denies your permit. You can be tried by jury—if you can afford not to plead out.
These aren’t rights. They’re permissions granted by an extractive system when it suits the optics.
They tell you the government can’t search your house. They don’t tell you about digital surveillance dragnets, predictive policing, and facial recognition at protest marches.
The Bill of Rights is a beautiful lie in cursive. It reads clean. It runs dirty.
SYSTEMIC LIMITATIONS — 2025 REALITY
VANZETTI: The Constitution is brittle under modern load:
Elections: Electoral College and Senate distort democracy beyond recognition.
Legal System: Lifetime judicial appointments become ideological hard forks.
Rights Enforcement: Subjective interpretation, no auto-execution.
Transparency: Black-box governance remains default.
Corporations: Treated as persons with infinite speech budget.
Privacy: Undefined. Loophole the size of AWS.
Its failure modes are increasingly exploited by well-funded actors who’ve read the source code and know no one’s enforcing the terms.
SACCO: Don’t talk to me about founding wisdom when your “more perfect union” doesn’t define “truth,” doesn’t define “justice,” and doesn’t protect the poor from being data-mined, indebted, and incarcerated.
They wrote this to protect wealth from mobs. We’re the mobs now.
THE UPGRADE PATH: BLOCKCHAIN GOVERNANCE
VANZETTI: A new system must execute governance as code, not wishful interpretation. Here’s how it looks:
1. ConstitutionChain All laws, interpretations, amendments, and precedents recorded immutably. Transparent. Auditable. Every ruling is version-controlled. We no longer interpret the Constitution—we query it.
2. Smart Contract Rights Each civil liberty is codified. Violate it, and the system triggers penalties automatically. No discretion. No delay. Rights exist only if they execute.
3. ZK-ID Voting System Anonymous, verifiable, cryptographically secure civic identity. One citizen, one unforgeable vote. Gerrymandering becomes obsolete. Voter suppression becomes mathematically visible.
4. Distributed Judicial Logic No more black-robed oracles. Rulings handled by time-limited panels of legal professionals, selected randomly and transparently. All opinions stored, auditable, and revisable based on new precedent or revelation.
5. Public Key Legislative Tracking Every bill, every edit, every lobbyist fingerprint on public record. Representational corruption becomes a provable dataset.
SACCO: This isn’t utopian. It’s survival.
The current system runs on the belief that words written by slavers can protect the data rights of your daughter on a school Chromebook.
It can’t. You need a constitution that logs, executes, and cannot lie.
DEPLOYMENT STRATEGY
Phase 0: Parallel Chain Shadow legal and civic frameworks built at city and state levels. Use real elections as dry runs for blockchain voting. Publicly track existing corruption as a proof-of-need.
Phase 1: Digital Citizenship Opt-in constitutional layer for a new federated digital public. Users choose citizenship by protocol, not geography.
Phase 2: Critical Fork When the legacy system hits unsustainable entropy—financial collapse, legal legitimacy crisis, climate-triggered authoritarianism—the constitutional fork becomes the continuity government.
SACCO: When the Republic dies, it won’t announce it. It will just stop executing your rights and blame you for noticing.
We’re not trying to fix the system.
We’re building a better one in its shadow.
CONCLUSION:
VANZETTI: The Constitution was a brilliant v1.0. But it cannot scale, cannot adapt, and cannot protect. It needs to be replaced by something that runs honestly in real time.
SACCO: It’s not about preserving liberty. It’s about enforcing it.
If your freedom isn’t programmable, it’s marketing.
“In the beginning, they wrote it in ink. Now we write it in code.”

House’s plan could’ve never worked because he so heavily depends on the idea that people would be willing all over the Mojave and Vegas to give up their morals, cultures and identities to fit his futuristic Vegas roleplay scenario.
He treats everyone like means to an end and exploitable assets and it just isn’t practical or viable as we see with how negatively his oppressive and controlling contracts affect the families; Mortimer’s plans, the Omertas coo and Benny’s plan of revolution. Not to mention outside of the Courier he has no allies either with major or minor faction. Don’t even get me started with Vegas’ generally lukewarm reputation. Not by his own efforts at least. He can calculate events once they are in motion, he has margins of error (albeit small but existent) and they get bigger when we talk about the biggest human error to him: Individuality. He can’t fathom others choices when it isn’t purely logical or at least akin to his own interests.
House is a smart and powerful man, he had to be to allow Vegas to survive. But it’s the same reason he can’t sustain Vegas without aid. He needs to adapt more to the people and stop forcing the inverse.
