speaking of bugs being dragons, I recently discovered that snakeflies exist and frankly I’m kind of in love with them. They’re just little dragons!!

Okay alright so i had four beers and some hot and sour instant noodles for dinner and decided to treat my future self to a less shitty hangover in the morning so i grabbed the half full mug of water that had been sitting on my kitchen counter for 36 hours and took a big swig but felt something in my mouth and this is what i spat out

Snakeflies (order Raphidioptera) are interesting creatures. I like to call them "dinosaur bugs" because they're a group of insects that evolved in the early Jurassic, reaching peak diversity during the Cretaceous. Snakeflies are what's known as a relict group, meaning they used to be way more widespread than they are now. They're a remnant of a more abundant past. These insects undergo complete metamorphosis. Both the larva and the adult are predators of soft-bodied arthropods. Snakeflies have four wings, so they're neither flies nor snakes :-) Agulla sp., Northern California.

because i am a gigantic entomology nerd, i've gone in and sorted every arthropod-inspired pokemon by what order their inspirations are in. but that made me realize... there are a lot of insect orders that don't have a pokemon representing them- at least, in the official games. so, fuck it! i'm starting a project where i make fakemon for every taxonomic insect order that pokemon hasn't done!

(i'll be tagging this with #pokedex entomology project for anyone who wants to keep up or follow along themselves!)

starting us off is raphidioptera, aka snakeflies!

Grubble (Bug/Rock) hatches from eggs laid on stony riverbeds. it hollows out pebbles with its hard, strong mandibles and wears them to protect it from birds and other bug pokemon

when it's time to evolve, a grubble will burrow into a large rock and become Castalys (Bug/Rock). what it lacks in mobility, it more than makes up for in defenses. it's sturdy enough to tank an earthquake, and its jaws can dish out a mean crunch

eventually, a castalys will break out of its stone shell, emerging as a Raphidrake (Bug/Dragon). it may look strange and unwieldy, but its sturdy grip and winding neck make it more than easy for raphidrake to catch its prey. ancient legends say there was once a raphidrake that was so gluttonous, it grew to the size of a wailord- before it became such a problem that a local hero had to slay it in battle

their names come from grub + rubble, castle + chrysalis, and raphidioptera + drake. grubble is based on snakefly larvae. castalys is based on insect pupae and castles- the two are rock type because snakeflies often lay their eggs in rocky crevices. raphidrake is based on adult snakeflies, as well as actual snakes. it's also a slight pun on "wyrm"/"worm", with its neck looking a lot like an annelid

snakefly time!!! i like these guys a lot. and haven't seen one irl before so this was pretty cool! unfortunately it chose to land directly in front of the sprinklers so i didn't get to stare at it for too long. alas.

Hello! I’m out in eastern Washington state USA and this child started eating my waffles! who is they??? my partner said they look like an earwig, but I didn’t know those had wings. I cut off some waffle so that they could eat it in peace! they really like it :3

Wow! That's a snakefly (Raphidioptera)! Lucky you, I've never met these guys myself.

Snakeflies are present in the western states, so the place fits. This definitely is a female, as we can see a very thick and long ovipositor. These guys are predatory, so she must have nibbled at your waffle for the sugar.

I can't really tell what species this is, since they are all similar in appearance. In addition to that there are only about 250 species worldwide.

Fun fact: Because of their long prothorax the German name translates to "camel-neck flies". Pretty accurate naming in my opinion. :-D

Overall, the Hermit/snakefly summons us to seek introspection, wisdom within solitude, embracing our inner radiance. By delving into life's riddles with open hearts and minds, we honor the Hermit's lofty stance, mirrored by the snakefly traversing the forest canopy. This pair guides us toward personal odysseys of inner illumination and discovery.
