Parodia oxycostata, The Huntington, California

A short cactus with 6-12 ribs and snow white wool at its apex. This plant is a deep, emerald green which nicely offsets its sunny yellow flowers. Its spines are reddish to white and are borne from the fuzzy areoles which dot its stem. This species is native to Brazil and stays under 3.5" in height and diameter.

Some people shouldn't be parents.

His earliest memory is standing on the snow, feet purple cold grasping nothing but a worn out ribbon in his small hand. The police found him and immediately threw a blanket over his shoulders, carrying him to the car.

The kid was quiet, barely blinking, expressionless; the only indication that he was responding properly was the tightening of their fist whenever the officers tried to pry open his hand to take the ribbon. He was asked several times about his name, but he never responded and not because he was far too absorbed in forgotten trauma, but because he didn't know his name. The child had fuzzy memories of people calling him so many different things, but never a proper name. Suddenly, as if God became compassionate over a lost child, the car stopped at a red light, right next to a building that announced some kind event: "Adolf Bastian. A deep dive into the primal motivations of men from the anthropologist's point of view". Bastian. It stuck.

The police department was unable to find anyone related to the kid, so to the system he went.

The Huxleys were very nice people, probably the only decent family that Bastian ever spent time with, so adopting their last name was not an hurdle. Unfortunately, because life is not always fair, Bastian was moved to another family in favor of a younger child that needed the kind attention that only people like the Huxleys could provide; they worked with difficult children after all.

The next place was not nice, nor the third or the fourth. The fifth family sent him back and the sixth just ran away with the money. Seventh time is the charm, I guess? But no. The Gray family was apathetic at best, the mother did nothing but lock the fridge and never give two shits whether kids scratched their knees or got bullied at school. The father was the typical alcoholic bum, although very good at hiding it whenever CPS was around. He slept most of the day after being fired from his fourth job in the past six months. Both of them always demanded silence in the house and to never even dare to touch the precious flowers of the woman's garden. Punishment included being dragged to seclusion, yelling and physical harshness enough to teach a lesson but never enough to leave a mark. It just kept escalating. They tried to rename them with the Gray last name, but Bastian would put up a fight every single time "It's Huxley! My last name is Huxley!" and he was so eager to leave that clear that he started going only by that name: Huxley. Even his foster siblings called him that. Hux.

He was already thirteen and the situation hadn't improved. Some children left to other homes, others got adopted, some others simply escaped just to be dragged back days after -- The Grays were unfortunately well connected to the PD and Hux, being one of their oldest could only watch, right?

He was fourteen when he finally snapped. It was no big issue, nothing of huge importance, just some screaming and hair pulling over the milk spilled on the table, the usual; but this was enough for him to take action.

Hux began by stomping all over the flowers, then breaking the alcohol bottles hidden all around the house. This last mess woke the up the family and the kid was met with rage. He was called by every name of the book throughout the years with the Grays, but 'dog', 'filthy pup' and 'stray' were top contenders and the favorites to use on him for whatever reason and this time he was called all of them one right after the other. The situation clearly got out of hand from everybody and everything ended with Hux pushing the man down the stairs.

Even if he acted in self-defense, the pettiness of the people in the PD connected to the Grays sent him to juvie until he was an adult. Parent figure roles were taken by inmates a couple of years older and the occasional guard that was far too nice for the job.

Hux gets out. Completely alone and without an idea of what to do, he was soon involved in the gangster life. Jumping from place to place, from eastern Europe to America, the mercenary started to get involved with shadier people and jobs even more difficult to keep in the shadows.

He gets caught, there's no running away from this. God won't have mercy. But Hux was no longer a creature of God at this point. Back in juvie, a fight that erupted ended with him heavily wounded. The nurse, a vampire, took pity of him back then and decided to save him. In the present, a devil decided to extend his hand, to give him one more chance at life. A dirty deed in exchange of a clean record, and he took it. Bastian felt permanently stained afterwards, but at least he was free... right?

He decided to move to Nevada where he joined the Cactus Cats; a life of crime was the only thing he knew, but maybe this time would be different.

Escape Ch 5

Warnings: Language. Horribly fluffy fluff.

Every moment with Casey felt like you were frozen in time, like it was standing still just to give you a few more lingering moments with each other. Nothing was ever rushed, frenzied or frantic, every kiss was long, eloquent, each night you spent buried in each others arms was soothing, calming and intimate. Each little wonder taking you to a whole new plane of passion, of a deeper connection, your love was fearless, full of passion and affection.

Casey couldn’t help but laugh at you grumbling over the cooling weather as the months passed, asking if you missed Florida now. You’d simply laughed and snuggled closer to her, saying that at least now you had an extra excuse for more cuddles. As October rolled into November, Casey gave you a key to her apartment so you could come and go as you please after work, able to crawl into her bed, wrapping your body around her softly. The world fell away when she was with you, you were all she needed, a sparkle of brightness amongst the dark city.

November rolled into December before you knew it, the city was coated in a light sheen of powdery snow, the air colder than before but not a bitter freezing. Casey bundled you up and managed to get you down to Central Park, spending the evening hand in hand, sipping on hot chocolate through the park taking in the sights as Christmas took over the city. She couldn’t help but feel her heart explode with love at the bright smile on your face as you danced through the snow, innocent as a child, catching snow flakes on your tongue. She wondered if this was the first time you’d ever seen snow. She held you close, innocently kissing you, cupping your cheek gently, laying a kiss on tip of your frozen nose. For a moment in time it was as if everything was perfect, all the pieces of her life had fallen perfectly into place, there was no place she’d rather be than in the middle of the park, dancing in the snowflakes with the love of her life.

You were happier than you had been in months, having something aside from work to look forward to during the day. You’d struggled a bit finding your footing in the big city, not many friends to be said for aside from a few of the servers and the regulars that came into your bar. You loved the way that Casey went out of her way to find different dinners that were authentically New York each week, the way she’d pick you up an extra bagel in the morning, the way she’d suffer through tourist traps to make sure you saw the real city. The only thing she couldn’t seem to sell you on was true New York pizza, you simply stated that there was nothing better than a nice thick slice of deep dish. It was basically the only thing you didn’t agree on. Truthfully you were more than okay with the cold, it kept Casey in the apartment more often, more chances to steal kisses, deeply snuggled under fuzzy blankets on the couch, tangling in each others limbs in the bed.

Casey had asked you to spend Christmas with her, which you obviously agreed to immediately. She had asked if you’d been planning on going back to Florida for the holiday, you waved it off saying how your Mom always tried to drag you to Magic Kingdom, and who wanted to do that on its busiest day of the year and eat a hot dog for dinner? Besides, home was wherever she was.

She didn’t have a tree, not being one for decorations, but you showed up one day with a little potted cactus with a star sticker stuck to the top of it, which she found utterly adorable. On the day of, you spent it like any other lazy day with a little bit more festivity flowing through the air. You baked cinnamon rolls in the morning, enjoying the gooey treats for a late breakfast, accompanied with baileys in your coffees as cheesy Christmas movies played in the background.

You insisted on watching at least one of the Home Alone movies, Casey insisted on the original animated Grinch instead of the ‘ridiculous live action one’, and you got into a playful squabble over whether or not Die Hard was a Christmas movie. You’d picked up a couple of “Christmas Dinner For One”s from Whole Foods, baking them for dinner, Casey laughing at you as you picked out all the celery from the stuffing, because ‘why should there be vegetables in my carbs and fat’?

Wine glasses were poured, a plate of Pillsbury sugar cookies with snowman on the coffee table (half of them cooked, half of them still raw, because, those are the rules) you settled back into the couch. Before reaching for the remote to start The Holiday, Casey turned to  you, a soft smile on her face.

“I know we said we were going to do gifts, but…I couldn’t resist…”

“Case…” You practically whined, gently taking the small package from her, waiting for her nod of approval before you opened it. You slid out a small golden necklace with a sparkly charm on the end. “A sun?”

“Florida, Sunshine state? And you’re my little ray of sunshine up here in New York.”

“Oooohh my God Casey!” You gave her a warm smile, laughter on your face, “You make me want to vomit in the best way possible. Thank you.” She practically howled at that, she had to admit it was definitely cheesy but she couldn’t resist it when she saw it. You turned your back to her, holding your hair out of the way as you handed it back to her so she could put it on. “I’ll never take it off.” You cupped her cheek with such love she could burst, kissing her gently. “And I broke the rule too.” 

You lunged over the side of the couch where you’d dropped your bag earlier, taking out a box, passing it over to her. She gently pried the lid off, finding mini Mix Tiles of photos of the two of you around all the various places she’d dragged you in an attempt to see the city properly. She flipped through them, a smile on her face at the fond memories, the way you managed to steal her heart right out of her chest in such short time.

“Baby….”

“Thought you should have a little piece of your adventures.” You shrugged. She pulled you into a leisurely kiss.

“I love it. And I love you.”

“I love you too. Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas my love.” She placed the box on the coffee table, humming contently as you snuggled up against her. The holiday may have been just a small little piece of your week, but it was full of love, full of light, and full of you, and that was all she needed.

The Suns Signs Playing Secret Santa

Aries: They pulled Aquarius but didn’t know what to get them so they pleaded and switched with Virgo to have Libra instead. They got Libra fuzzy mittens, silk scrunchies, and a cute keychain.

Taurus: They’re here, nor there on Secret Santa. They’re just happy it’s not white elephant because they hate feeling like their gift is judged. They pulled Capricorn and gave them homemade baked goods and a new hat.

Gemini: They came up with the idea, but let Capricorn organize it. They are excited for Secret Santa. They pulled Aries and got them a hot sauce set, chocolate truffles, and a soy candle. They feel confident Aries will like the gift.

Cancer: Cancer is nervous they’re gift won’t be good enough so they always over gift. They went over budget. They pulled Leo and got Leo a rose quartz crystal, lip gloss, a claw clip, and holiday themed fuzzy socks.

Leo: They love little surprises and the who’s got who guessing of Secret Santa. They pulled Gemini and they got Gemini a new book they think they’ll love and a funny t shirt.

Virgo: Virgo is still trying to figure out who has them. They pulled Libra but switched with Aries for Aquarius. Virgo is a good gift giver so they are confident regardless of who they have. They got Aquarius a fun holiday slime, some candy, and a cactus with a cute pot.

Libra: Libra knows who everyone has already, including that Aries has them after switching with Virgo. They pulled Cancer and they got Cancer a sweater, a Christmas ornament, and hair oil.

Scorpio: They pulled Virgo and are trying really hard to keep it a secret. They even wrapped their gift as non-Scorpio as they could. They got Virgo a new stationary set and a set of silk pillow cases.

Sagittarius: They pulled Pisces and first tried to switch with Capricorn, but Capricorn refused to tell them who they had. Sag asked Cancer for help on what to give Pisces. They ended up getting Pisces a snow globe, macarons, and essential oils.

Capricorn: They begrudgingly organized it all, not trusting Gemini to not mess up. They pulled Sagittarius and are at a loss for what to get them, but don’t want to switch in the spirit of hiding who everyone has. They got Sagittarius a new duffel bag and fun earrings.

Aquarius: Aquarius could care less who everyone has. They’re happy to find out on the day of gift exchange. They pulled Scorpio and they got them a new tarot deck and a stress ball.

Pisces: Pisces is stressing over what everyone’s getting everyone else. They want to be at a similar level of gift. They pulled Taurus and got them a calligraphy set, chocolate, and a heartless hair curling set:

Hey, snow, tell us about your plants? (Only if you want to ofc)

AAAAA! YES! My plants I love them! 

So, I’ve really gotta tell you about my favorite. I named it Robert (or Bob for short) and it’s named after Robert Plant (lol), Bob Ross, and Bob Marley. Yeah. All three at once. But he’s a ponytail palm but like... a miniature one. I’ve had him for six (?) years and he’s my favorite thing ever. 

I also got three succulent plants (Esther, Molly, and Doug) who are in these little skull-shaped pots that I really dig for some reason. They’re newer and kinda little, but I love them.

I have another plant (Viola) and I’m not sure what type of plant she is, but she’s neat. She’s got spotted leaves and every year, she grows little white flowers, basically dies, then regrows. Like... idk like a phoenix or somethin.

THEN I have three (I think they’re called) Spider plants (idk). Their names are Gustav, Todd, and Lenore. They’re getting repotted tomorrow but they’re really neat because instead of having seeds or whatever, they have runners. So the baby plants grow off of the adults (idk how to explain it) but it’s pretty neat. Gustav I got from my fifth grade teacher and Lenore was from my grandpa. Todd is Lenore’s baby.  I know this is taking a while, but I can’t shut up about plants.  anyhoo, next is Peter (yeah, like Peter Parker) who is a mother-in-law's tongue plant (also known as the snake plant or viper's bowstring). It used to be about six inches tall, but I repotted it about a year ago which gave it a lot of room to grow. Now he’s three feet tall. 

Another plant I don’t know the species of (I think it’s a lucky tree or plant or somethin?) but I named it Floof. They’re not fluffy, it just sounded about right. It’s pretty small right now and has a really neat trunk (it looks like braided hair), but I’m repotting this one tomorrow too.

Now, I got some other type of succulent (species???) named Dumbass. Yeah I named it that. Why? Because it shared a pot with two other plants but it got so big that it started taking up too much room and the other two plants died before I could repot them. So yeah, it’s a dumbass. And yeah, I’m pretty bitter about it (even three years later 😒)

NEXT, I got a short lil cactus (who gets the most BEAUTIFUL flowers in summer) and her name is Nancy. She’s been getting kinda tall tho(?) which is odd, because she’s a ball cactus and they don’t really do that. But she’s got a lil arm growing off of her, which is really cute because it looks like she’s waving. She recently got a new pot, which is just a mug from a thrift shop. But the mug has a face on it, which makes Nancy the mug’s hair (like a man bun or somethin). She’s also got a mini umbrella with her. If you couldn’t tell, I LOVE HER.

Second to last! Guess what? Idk what kind of plant she is! But, I call her Betsy. This one is freaking MASSIVE. Like, she was really little, but four(?) years later. SHE BLEW THE FUCK UP. Idk how to describe her, I’ll show a picture tomorrow but she is GLORIOUS.

FINALLY (I know you’re tired of me talking but congrats on getting this far), I got this lil chubby plant (again, who knows what it is) but it’s really short and fuzzy. His name is Ollie and he shares a pot with a scrawny, tall(ish) plant named Frank. They’re bros. But Frank is really fragile, so pretty sure Ollie might kill him. We’ll see how it goes 🤷

Amount of sleep: 9 hours, which is like, the minimum for me feeling rested in the morning, so right now I’m very excited that I don’t feel entirely like death right now.

Dream job: published author who’s successful enough to support herself just on writing novels! It’s been my dream since I was about 10 years old, and while I am older and much less naive, it’s good to have something to strive for, right?

Dream trip: Scotland. That’s another dream I’ve had since I was a kid, and like, I know Loch Ness is probably a kitschy tourist trap, I know it’s gonna be crowded, I know there’s got to be a thousand better things to do and see in the country (which I would love to do as well), but for my 7-year-old self, I wanna.

Favorite food: I would kill a man to be able to eat italian-style bread again. Also I’m fond of nachos an unfortunate amount.

Play any instruments? flute and piccolo. I knew a little guitar at one point but I lost it.

Languages: just English. Again, I knew a little tiny bit of Spanish and ASL, but I lost those. I also know one (1) single word of Polish. I can say “thank you”

Favorite songs: it’s in constant flux. 

Random Facts: I’ve never broken a bone but I did fuck up my ankle bad enough in kindergarten that I had to get an x-ray to make sure it wasn’t broken. I’ve only ever been to two concerts (Halestorm, with my brother; see above) which is also equal to the number of shows I’ve seen on Broadway. I want to get a tattoo someday but I’m indecisive and afraid of commitment and lack serious ideas. I say that the first Star Wars movie I saw was Revenge of the Sith which is true but my first introduction to Star Wars at large was Lego Star Wars. The first video game to make me cry was Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team. I like growing succulents and convinced my mother to bring home my grandmother’s jade plant when she passed, and we’ve now propagated at least ten baby jade plants from the leaves that fell off; and I’ve only killed one cactus in the five years I’ve had plants but that one is kind of sad because she was one of the first two plants I got.

Kitchen Trends for Cozy Winter Months

Keeping up with seasonal kitchen trends is a fun way to spruce up your kitchen that does not require a large budget. how do you take your coffee/tea? ...I don’t LOL. I don’t really mind tea that much, I just don’t find it particularly enjoyable to drink and I won’t if I can help. Whereas I violently despise coffee (...yes, I’m italian and I can’t stand coffee...). I do take it sometimes, if I haven’t slept and I need to go to class, I used to take it when I needed to study after dinner in high school... it’s for emergencies, basically. When I do take it, I just put three spoons of sugar in it and try to get it over with as fast as possible.

favorite candle scent? I’m not a big fan of those because they tend to make me sneeze, but I guess that anything that’s not nauseatingly sweet goes? And no orange-adiancent scents, for the love of god.

what perfume do you wear? D&G, I think it’s called the “Imperatrice”. I wouldn’t mind changing it though, I am not that enthusiastic about it.

what’s your go-to dance move when you’re alone? Tbh I don’t really like to dance, not even when I’m alone. Sorry, I don’t have an answer to this.

favorite quote? How. how am I supposed to. choose. one. how. do have any idea what you are asking of me. Okay, I’m going with the first one that popped into my head: When you are backed against the wall, break the goddamn thing down. Because Harvey Specter and his motivational shit are ridiculously helpful to me LOL.

favorite self-care routine(s)? Big blanket and tv shows/movies that I love are my go-to after a bad day.

How do you take your coffee/tea? If you don’t like those whats your favorite warm drink? I like my tea with a little honey, not a lot, and lemon depending on what type of tea (sometimes I add milk). I add hot chocolate mix to my coffee to cut the bitterness.

What perfume do you wear, if any? For daytime, I wear Waikiki Coconut. For nighttime I would wear Midnight Pomegranate until it was discontinued.

Favorite self care thing(s)/routine(s)? When I have a lot of time on my hands, I’ll take a super hot bath and add bath salts (lavender or eucalyptus). After that, I moisturize with body butter (or a combination of lotion and Vaseline) since it holds longer. In terms of skincare, washing my face with a charcoal scrub to exfoliate and putting on a face mask. After that, I put on a toner, serum, and then a moisturizer.

Fuzzy socks or house slippers? Either one is fine tbh, but I typically wear house slippers. What color are your eyes? Dark brown

Whats your favorite eye color on others? I’m a sucker for blue eyes. 

Favorite season? Why? Winter. I like the cold weather and when it snows.
