What can birds tell us about the defrosting poles and climate change? Third Pod’s newest episode is about snow petrels -- shy pelagic (sea-faring) birds who nest on rock crevices in Antarctica. Anant Pande is an Indian polar researcher who studies these endemic birds that prefer to nest near less icy waters. Climate change has melted polar oceans and perhaps made it less energy intensive -- as they have to fly shorter distances to find non-frozen oceans.

But it has also increased extreme weather events that tend to flood homes of less experienced nesters who are unaware of safer, wind-free directions to house a nest. The story will uncover facts about snow petrels and the research process of Dr. Pande, who goes on expeditions to Antarctica to study these birds.

TOP FIVE: Apex Predators

Woohoohoo thank you for the ask! (Fun fact: I wanted to be a zoologist as a kid! Although I don’t want to do that anymore, I still love animals, so this ask delighted me.)

First has to be the great white shark. I love sharks and had many books about them as a kid. They strike much fear into me but in the best way possible. I have so much respect for this majestic marine beast.

The crocodile comes in second bc it is the predator of the hippo. I don’t hate hippos, I just hate that they can get away with murder just bc people think they look cute. Crocodiles put hippos in their place, and for that I’ve got to stan.

The Tasmanian Devil! I learned about these guys in an episode of Wild Kratts as a kid and have been in love ever since. They guys are cute, but they could rip you to shreds and it’s great. I love my widdle murder puppers!

Giant Petrel. I love birds, so I gotta have a bird on this list. And I can get behind some bird on bird violence, their bloodlust is part of the reason I like birds so much.

Finally, I had to decide between the tiger and the snow leopard. I decided by thinking of Tigress vs Tai Lung from King Fu Panda. I know Tai Lung beat Tigress, but I still love my kung fu girl boss more, so tiger wins! Plus they are so beautiful, ok! One of my favorite animal prints.

I would like to offer this resource for therians, an extensive list of all of Sir David Attenborough’s nature documentaries that are available on soap2day, and a full list of what species* they each (notably, prominently) feature the natural behaviors of, separated by episode, and omitting species that were only shown dead, juvenile or being predated on. This took me a while (I have been working on it since Prehistoric Planet’s release) because I did in fact have to watch every single series in full in order to list all the species and the episodes are around 50 minutes long, but enjoy.

Most of these shows have closed captioning, which is why I’ve picked soap2day. Planet Earth is the only one that doesn’t. I did not include Dynasties and Dynasties II because each episode only features one species.

Okay, I've been summoned to Tumblr by cute Satra and Lei fan art, so I should probably introduce myself and my books. Hello! I'm Vale, and I write creature fantasy as K. Vale Nagle. If you like interesting gryphons, you're in the right place: aquatic diving petrel/fishing cat gryphons, poisonous hooded pitohui/tiger gryphons, pretty gyrfalcon/snow leopard gryphons, intimidating Haast's eagle/saber-toothed tiger gryphons, soggy sandgrouse/sand cat gryphons, and a lot more. My series are epic fantasy using mostly real (though sometimes extinct) animals, free of humans but full of queer characters, intrigue, large battles, and ecological apocalypses. My cover art is by Jeff Brown, with interior graphite pieces by Brenda Lyons and gryphon chapter headers by Kittrel (whose chibi hearts you may have seen). I also have a short story collection (best read anytime after Starling, book three) with a beak-cute lesbian gryphon love story with terror birds, a Gryphon vs. Nature blizzard apocalypse tale, a Christmas-y story, and something pretty close to zombies. I've also written a full novel set in the world of Dire by John Bailey called Coldbright which can be found in the Tales of Feathers & Flames anthology. If you like GryphIns but you want something with more mystery, almost horror, as told through the eyes of a snarky little opinicus and his dire gryphon ex-boyfriend, it's a great read this time of year. I love and appreciate all the fan mail, fan fiction, fan letters, and people reaching out about this series. I'm a little slow replying, as I started writing the series right after getting diagnosed with a catastrophic autoimmune system. The treatments are pretty intense, and it's easiest for me to spend my time and energy writing. I used to have a few pen names across several genres, but for the most part, all of my energy goes into finishing up GryphIns. I'm married to dragon author Glenn Birmingham, so if you've seen us posting pictures of our cats and thought it's strange they share a name, they're the same cats. And that's about it. Just a queer author writing gryphony books when I'm not walking my cat. A few common answers to questions: Q: There are sometimes typos in social media, why is that? A: Catastrophic APS means I've had a stroke (and associated memory loss), so when a copy editor isn't coming up behind me, there'll be doubled words and typos from time-to-time. I used to worry about them, since they don't look good if you're an author! But I'd rather reply to fan letters and kind posts. I think if you've read my author notes at the back of my books, you know to expect a few doubled words here and there. Q: When you say a queer author, what do you mean? A: Since people ask about own voices and I have a lot of lgbtqia+ characters in my books, I'm pan, demi, trans, and genderfluid. I'm lucky enough to have a lot of queer friends and first readers who make sure I don't mess up any characters. Q: When's the next GryphIns novel coming out? A: Some years, I spend a lot of my time fighting health insurance battles, and it slows me down. Pridelord (#8) is currently in line edits. It's twice as long as Eyrie and three times as long as Coldbright, so it's a pretty big book! It shouldn't be too much longer. You'll know it's just about time because you'll hear James Scott Spaid talk about narrating the audiobook. Q: How many books will there be in GryphIns? A: I'm famous for underestimating how many books it takes to finish a series. My other pen names all wrote short stories and standalone novels, so my proposal for GryphIns originally had five books. Jeff Brown is wrapping up the cover for Saberbeak (#9) and Nighthaunt (#10). If I end up needing one more book to finish, though, don't be too surprised.

What if I just

(Miles) Sparkflight- nightrain-wing (usually appears black like a regular nightwing, but particularly likes using his rainwing power of color change to blend into environments. He has future sight powers, but he hasn’t harnessed them very well yet.)

(Gwen) Snowdance- icerain-wing (she has Snow White scales that look water colored blue and pink in some places. usually they’re very light, easy colors in the eyes, they rarely change to anything too harsh unless she’s really emotional. She treats her scales like a canvas.)

(Hobie) Ivy- rain-wing (lets his scales change color freely, no one really knows what his base scale pattern is like because he’s not one to cover up the emotion in his scales)

(Pavitr) Petrel- skyrain-wing (similarly to Swordfish, he only has select scales that can change color, but he really likes changing them. His base scale color is a true red tone, and he usually has blue and gold highlights on the scales he can change.)

(Miguel) Swordfish- Searain-wing (like a dark, dark blue, where only his light up scales change color. Being one of the only seawing he uses that to his advantage and communicates with himself under his breath with his light up scales. He basically looks like an rgb keyboard lmao.)

(Jess) Stardrift- night-wing (a dark, violet-black scaled dragon, her star scales on her wings look like shooting stars. Mind reader.)

(Peter B.) Petalite- sky-wing (average red skywing who’s adorned with little trinkets)

(Mayday) Malachite- skywing (a bright red flamescale, Petalite made everyone gloves that they can put on their talons to hold her.)

(LYLA) Limpet- lucky for her she’s the only human (scavenger, in this case). One of swordfish’s. . . Friends. . . found her one day and decided not to eat her so she (the friend) gave her to him as company. She thinks Swordfish is her pet dragon, Swordfish thinks she’s his pet scavenger. Everyone is very confused in this scenario.

(The Spot) Polka Dot: fucked up little rainwing who somehow got his hands on an animus talisman. Oops.

(Margo) Seawhisper- nightsea-wing (she’s a dark blue, lighter than Swordfish for reference, and has very gorgeous ombré sky blue to light violet light up scales. She has mind reading powers :3)

(Kingpin) Strongwings- big fuckin nightwing. Like huge. If you think Swordfish looks big for a dragon you’re not prepared to see this guy— er— this corpse, I guess. He’s dead.

They’re all connected through being animus. Other than Strongwings and Polka Dot, of course.

See it as like.. the talons of peace but everyone is less mentally stable.

I’ll come up with their dragon names later probably, and I might draw a few of them.

Heart Pirates Week 2024: Day 9: April 14: Law: Tattoos/ Fantasy AU

The plump seal sun-baked on the sea ice, a mound of snow nearby. Doc Q and Stronger flew past, circled a few times through the crisp Arctic air, and then went back the way they came. The mound of snow moved. Amazing that the lopsided horse could keep in the sky, Bepo thought. He seemed on death's door with every flap of his moulting wings. A few giant petrels trailed after the horse and Blackbeard physician.

Speaking of moulting,  the fur and skin of the animal next to him dissolved gradually, revealing inked flesh unique to  Trafalgar Law. The hands, the forearms, the upper arms, the chest, the back, the fingers. Some correlated to the spots of his baby pelt. He  let people see the designs, but he didn’t let many know what they were, but he showed them all the same because he did not want to forget where and who he came from.

The World Government, Doflamingo, could wipe out his people, but what Law carried with him went with him. He disguised the markings on occasion—like fleeing from an Emperor of the Four seas—for inverse reasons, like now. It'd be better if Blackbeard didn't notice him.

Sea water, draining him of every power, meant the devil-fruit user couldn’t safely take largha seal form that often, but Law never lost the skill to transform. It was safer for Bepo to carry him in human form at the moment, though. Flippers didn’t have a great grip on fur, despite the nails. Not when Law was exhausted, but the blubber would protect him from the cold, and the ability to hold his breath for a longer period of time was an advantage. Bepo would make sure they alternated forms.

Fortunately, Doc Q and Blackbeard were not the brightest bunch of that crew, and the brightest hardly seemed to care, so hopefully another shiny ship (well away from their crew) would catch Blackbeard's attention, and Law and Bepo and the Hearts could regroup.

Jean Bart had wished for the good health of the Hearts, and it’d take some time to regain it, but they would. Bepo slipped another Sulong rumble ball down his throat. He knew he couldn’t overextend—Chopper had warned against it, and they weren't sure of the side effects—but Elbaf wasn’t far, and he didn’t think Blackbeard had any alliance with the giants. Maybe they’d find refuge. They’d been lucky so far.

Winged AU - Fantasy High

So I have a few scattered thoughts about this au, so I'm spewing them out here.

So let's start with Adaine. So her parents suck ass right? Well I bet that they would literally ground her by clipping her primary feathers after she didn't get into Hudol. I also think that her wings prior to her becoming the oracle were a grey color, but as new feathers come in as she molts her wings would look more and more like that of a Spix's Macaw. I fully believe that Her wings would be clipped again when she was held in Calethriel Tower and Gorgug carried her out as the Bad Kids flew away.

Next up: Gorgug! My man's wings are those of harpy eagle's. He is a big strong boy and needs big strong wings. I fully believe that growing up was clumsy as hell with those fuckers!! I think that at a certain point his parents were asked to have Gorgug bind his wings when he went to school. Instead, Wilma and Digby, being the loving parents that they are, artificed their boy a hoodie of wing holding so that he could just wear that and it would have an extra-dimensional space for his wings. A nice bonus was that the mean kids at school could no longer pull out his feathers.

My girl Fig was thought to have pheasant wings like her mom when she was growing and assumed to be an elf. Instead about the time her horns came in so did the talons on her wings. She has the wings of a Hoatzin. I personally believe that she keeps the little talons that actual Hoatzins lose when they become adults.

Fabian Aramais Seacaster has the wings of a snow petrel. A sea bird, just like his papa. They are just a little more elegant, which he gets from his mama. I fully believe that he learns to dance with them whilst in Kei Lumennura with his grandpapa and mama. I think that the persona who actually taught him to fly was Cathilda, icon that she is.

I fully believe that part of Kristen's whole being chosen by Helio was shown in her wings. I think that she got beautiful green wings like that of a corn husk (Green Jay) up until she switched to be Saint Kristen Applebees of Cassandra. Her wings switched to more closely resemble those of a Steller's Jay. I think that her parents did try to clip her wings before she finally moved in with Fig and Gilear at the Strongtower Luxury Apartments

One Mr. Riz Gukgak is a badass through and through just like his parents. And his wings are built for badassery. They are rose gold saker falcon wings. He is fast as hell and he had to be cause if he wasn't they ya know, bullies would be dicks to my guy.

Snow petrel. Apparently there were 3 landings on the boat in total that day. Based on the Frozen Planet II bit I watched, my guess is that this guy came out worse in a fight--note all the orange patches on his(?) wings, they will spit that waxy stuff at each other, and the dangerous thing is that if it freezes they won't be able to fly anymore. However it was 3-4 degrees Celsius so that wouldn't have been an issue then.

Anyway, he did *not* like the expedition staff member coming over to get him off the boat haha.

What can birds tell us about the defrosting poles and climate change? Third Pod’s newest episode is about snow petrels -- shy pelagic (sea-faring) birds who nest on rock crevices in Antarctica. Anant Pande is an Indian polar researcher who studies these endemic birds that prefer to nest near less icy waters. Climate change has melted polar oceans and perhaps made it less energy intensive -- as they have to fly shorter distances to find non-frozen oceans.

But it has also increased extreme weather events that tend to flood homes of less experienced nesters who are unaware of safer, wind-free directions to house a nest. The story will uncover facts about snow petrels and the research process of Dr. Pande, who goes on expeditions to Antarctica to study these birds.
