It’ll always piss me off to see people say they can’t relate to a character bc it’s set in certain time periods or bc of their outside characteristics. One of the best things about of fiction to me is that you get to realize that certain things transcend those « barriers ». Don Draper has touched me the most out of any tv character ever and I’m a black gen z Muslim French girl lol just bc it looks like it won’t be relatable to you does mean it’s not something worth discovering and watching. And even if you can’t relate to something that does not mean the humanity and soul behind the creation isn’t worth the try. Always Looking for something you relate to is a boring way to experience media and will only reduce your horizons

Gah, the way the characters in white cat legend think that pushing those they love away will protect them. Qiu Qingzhi with Li Bing. Li Bing with Chen Shi and the rest. Alibaba with Vice President Shangguan. "It's for your own good" they say and they truly believe it. Even Chen Jiu with Chen Shi ("don't come to Shendu").

The way that the only way to break this cycle was for those being pushed away to push back. How, when even Chen Shi (the most openly caring of all the characters) had given up, his previous actions meant that Wang Qi and co. were still willing to keep trying. They were the four who had been deliberately coasting along prior to the start of the series, doing only enough in their jobs to not entirely lose their paychecks (and not even doing a particularly good job at that). And yet, because of the impact Li Bing and Chen Shi had had on them, *they're* the ones to say "stop pushing us away" and go out of their way to bridge the gap to Li Bing. Li Bing, who time and again, pushed others away, certain he had to keep others out of danger, and yet also terrified of what letting people close would do to *him* if they discovered him as he "truly" was.

It wasn't too late for Li Bing. He had people in his corner willing to push past his attempts to keep them out and he was (eventually) able to accept them. Accept that they accepted him.

Not everyone is so lucky.

Today's book haul (and a rare DVD haul!)

All horror, because I was hanging out with my friend who loves horror and she inspired me. Was going to rent Slewfoot from the library, but then I discovered it has ✨ illustrations ✨ Reluctant Immortals was an impulse buy, I think it was recommended on one of the podcasts I listen to but I can't quite remember. What Feasts at Night needs no explanation.

Also got some DVDs for once! Trying to slowly expand my physical media collection so I don't rely on streaming services as much. Got Nope since it's a favourite and I'm tired of paying to rent it, and the Cloverfield trilogy since Horror Virgin covered the first movie recently and I want to rewatch it and finally see the sequels. I hear the first two are excellent and the third is absolutely bonkers.

officially met neil 🖤 he was the absolute sweetest (as to be expected), albeit we were both very very tired. also accidentally jabbed the poor man with my horns. made for some funny photos but my god i was mortified and felt terrible 😭😭

also got some tadpoles and gave one to blue, everyone’s favorite owl. 🥰

overall, as my new keychain says — astarion approves!
