It’s December 23, 1989, Curse has just been released onto store shelves... right along side it, the very same day, was Sega’s Golden Axe. Sure, Curse caught your attention with its bizarre cover, but you knew Golden Axe was coming, you played it in the arcade, and wanted to play it at home. Curse, you had never heard of, and unless you had a PC in Japan, you would never know who these Micronet guys were. It gets worse as prior to Curse’s release, Technosoft began to forge its legacy with Thunder Force 2 and Herzog Zwei, and Toaplan had also shown up on the Mega Drive with Truxton. Curse needed to stand out, and it did... for all the wrong reasons.

What Curse does offer you for turrets is you can have up to two of them, and you can change their position to either cover you from the sides, or top and bottom. Not necessarily a bad thing I would say, if it wasn’t for the fact that you rarely will ever get attacked from behind. It does act as a nice shield in case you are attacked from behind. Speaking of shield, that’s something Curse offers the player. A shield that can absorb damage and also enemy collisions. The shield is good to cover you for at least 3 shots or crashes before you die, but you’ll never be hurting for power in this game. Even if you go into this game underpowered, at lowest speed, you actually will find yourself with a fighting chance, but again, that shield will see to it this never happens. That shield, coupled with the game’s simple scoring, and ease of access is a blessing, and a curse.

Normally with a shmup, it’s all about memorizing enemy attack patterns, finding the best weapons to use, maximizing that weapon’s capabilities, rotating your turrets for optimal positioning, and using that super bomb when it gets out of hand. The existence of a shield becomes an excuse to miss attack patterns, as you’re most likely going to find plenty of shield drops in your quest. As if that weren’t enough, Curse was also generous in the extra lives department. In a shmup, getting an extra life is seen as rewarding, that you are doing so well in the game, but in Curse, it feels like the game is willingly giving itself up to you. It has made up its mind and surrendered. It isn’t until you get to stage 4, you feel this game is trying to challenge you by throwing as many possible projectiles it can from indestructible asteroids, to missiles and bullets. It’s the one time I felt this game was actually enjoyable, but sadly the game’s curse had already been setting in.

Now, I’d be willing to forgive Curse’s ill-fated existence if it at least felt good to play, but here’s where everything goes wrong for Curse. Remember how I mentioned Thunder Force 2, and Truxton? Well, those games played at a smooth, silky 60 frames per second. All good shmups play at 60 frames per second. This gives the player optimal control, and response time to the given situation. Why am I bringing this up? Surely Curse is running the same frame rate, right? Nope! Because Micronet decided to make use of parallax scrolling in the background, which unfortunately hinders the overall framerate of the game, dooming it to an abysmal 30 frames per second, getting close to 20 when the action gets too hot. This, unfortunately, makes you feel sluggish, even if you have your speed at max. If Truxton and Thunder Force 2 could manage hectic action without the framerate issues, what’s Micronet’s excuse? While the game may not be the best thing in the world, I will say I think for Micronet’s first outing on the Mega Drive, this game has one hell of a soundtrack. One thing a shmup needs to get right to make the player feel engaged is the music, and boy did it get my blood pumping, especially at the end. It felt like everything I had suffered through, the frame rate, the simplicity, the ease of access, that I was finally ready to tackle those who started this war with me. It’s a shame the sound effects couldn’t match that. As again, after playing Truxton prior to this, Curse feels like it needed more punch in sound effects, because when you shoot, there’s no sound effect! Maybe it was for the best as most of the sound effects in this game have that scratchy sound you come to expect from close to the bottom of the Mega Drive bin.

All that said, is Curse the worst game to come out of 1989? No. It’s arguably an inoffensive shmup that was victim to poor design choices, and some of the worst possible timing in the world. It was because of the poor reception in Japan that publisher INTV backed out of distributing the game in the United States. For Micronet however, this served as a learning experience, as two years later they would put out a fantastic port of the arcade classic Raiden to the Mega Drive. As for Curse, it’s at least playable, and if you need a shmup to get used to the genre, Curse will make it a little easy for you. This also helps really spread the whole magic notion to any parts of the world who haven’t been paying it much attention.

So, the other schools are going to all spring up in bursts, as new eyes get on the whole magic concept. A Complete Beginner’s Guide to Masking in Photoshop

Several years ago a friend of mine asked me to teach him how masks work in Photoshop. This is my incredibly late response.

We’ll go over the basics of what masks are, what they’re used for and how wielding them properly will take your Photoshop skills to an entirely new level.

What Is a Mask?

Layers are probably the single most important addition to Photoshop since the original version, but layer masks are a close second. I would posit that until you thoroughly understand how and why to use masks, you simply don’t understand the power of Photoshop.

The term “mask” isn’t immediately understandable to someone outside the realm of graphic design. At its simplest definition a mask is a way to apply something to a very specific portion of an image.

There are two primary types of masks: clipping masks and layer masks. These two tools are closely related in concept, but very different in application. Let’s start by discussing layers masks, which are generally what people are referring to when you hear them discuss Photoshop masking.

Layer Masks

A layer mask is something that you apply to a given layer to control the transparency of that layer. Where layer opacity controls the transparency of the entire layer at once, a mask gives you more precise controls over very specific areas. If you want the entire layer to be at 30%, you would lower the opacity, if you want just the left side of a layer to be at 30%, you would use a mask.

When you add a mask to a layer, it covers the entire thing with an invisible grayscale canvas. There are ways to see it that we’ll check out later but just know that as a general rule, applying a mask to a layer won’t cause any immediate visual differences unless you have an active selection at the time.

On this invisible canvas, you can paint white, black or any level of gray in-between. The color that you paint tells Photoshop how opaque to make the pixels at that point. White means 100% opacity and black means 0% opacity.

With this in mind, try to imagine what the mask below would do to a layer:

As you can see, if our mask was all white with the three circles shown above, we would have a completely visible layer where in all the white areas, and spots of transparency in the circles. If we apply this mask to a layer, this is the result:

Clipping Masks

Clipping masks are very similar to layer masks only they use one layer to determine the transparency of another. In this scenario, you stack two layers on top of each other with the bottom being the determining factor of the transparency of the top.

Instead of using black and white values though, clipping masks simply borrow transparency from the layers used to make them, namely the bottom layer. If the bottom layer has some areas that are opaque and some areas that are transparent, a clipping mask will apply these values to the top layer.

This one is hard to explain without an example, but becomes crystal clear when you see it in action. Let’s use the two layers shown below and say that our goal here is to cut or “clip” the wood layer to be in the shape of the letters. Notice that, at this point, the wood is the bottom layer and the text is the top layer.

To achieve the effect that we want, simply swap the position of the layers so that the wood is on the top, then go to the Layers menu at the top of your screen and select “Create Clipping Mask” (Command-Option-G). Voila, we now have the effect we were going for. Where the text layer was opaque, the wood layer is now opaque and where the text layer was transparent, the wood layer is now transparent.

There’s some really interesting functionality here. You can still position and make changes to each of the two layers independently. By dragging around the wood layer, you move the position of the texture inside the bounds of the letters while the letters themselves stay stationary.

Also, you can apply layer effects to the compilation via the bottom layer. For instance, here’s what happens if we select the text layer and add an Inner Shadow.

Clipping masks fun, functional and underrated, but the truth is that layer masks are far more common in every day use. The information above should be enough to get you off and running with clipping masks so from here on out we’ll focus purely on layer mask functionality.

How Do I Make a Layer Mask?

Now that we have a strong grasp of exactly what masks are and how the two different types of masks differ, let’s see how to create and work with a layer mask.

The first thing we need is two layers. I grabbed the two images below from photographers Adrian Durlea and Erik Soderstrom. The shack image is on the bottom and the fire is on the top.

The general idea here is to take some, not all, of the fire and apply it to the shack. The first step is to stack the two images as we see above and set the fire layer’s blending mode to Screen. This will make all of the black pixels transparent, which blends the two images together nicely.

With that one change, this is already a pretty decent image! Let’s say though that we want to only have fire near the door of the shack. To accomplish this, we’ll need to add a mask to the fire layer. Select the fire layer and click the mask icon shown in the image below.

Now, with the mask selected in the layers palette, we grab a soft, black brush and paint out the portions of the fire that we don’t want to see. As we do this, the fire begins to disappear. To bring it back, we simply paint white.

As you can see in the image below, with just a little painting, our fire is now much more centralized to the portion of the image that’s already lit up and therefore looks decently natural.

To see the actual mask, Option-Click (Alt-Click on a PC) on the little mask preview in the layers palette (Shift-click to hide the mask completely). After painting out some of our fire, this brings up the following:

Notice that we’re not just constrained to hard edges. The beauty of masks is that you can do anything you want with them as long as you can pull it off in values of gray. This means you can paint, clone, create and fill selections, copy and paste, and all kinds of other actions you perform on the main canvas.

Why Not Just Erase?

Upon first learning how to use masks, most rookies think the same thing: “I can already do all of this with the eraser tool.” Wrong! In fact, as far as I’m concerned, once you learn to mask, you should literally never pick up the eraser tool again because it tends to be so destructive.

What do I mean by destructive? Think about what happens when you use the eraser tool: it erases pixels. Mind you, it doesn’t hide them for a while until you want them back, it “destroys” the pixels. The changes that you make by deleting portions of a layer are permanent and can’t exactly be tweaked later.

This is simply a horrible way to work. With every new iteration of Photoshop, Adobe gives us more and more ways to make non-destructive edits, meaning those that don’t truly alter the original pixel data. For instance, Filters used to be a permanent and destructive change, if you blurred a layer, it was stuck that way! Now, with Smart Filters, you can always go back and adjust or even delete the blur.

This same concept gave birth to masks many years ago. With a mask, you not only have the ability to make remarkably detailed decisions about the transparency of a layer or group of layers, even better, you have the freedom to go back and refine or scrap those changes at any time. If I had erased my fire in the example above, it would be gone forever and bringing it back would involve importing the layer all over again. However, because I used a mask, all I have to do is fill that mask with white and immediately all of my fire detail returns.

To use the metaphor of an actual mask, imagine that you want to change your appearance for Halloween. You have two options: the first is to undergo plastic surgery to permanently change your face to look like that of a scary creature and the second is to wear a mask. In this scenario, the eraser tool is plastic surgery. It’s simply a bad choice when you’re not sure that you want the changes to be permanent. Go with the mask instead.

Advanced Masking Techniques

The information above is an absolute beginner’s guide to masks. Odds are, if you’ve been using Photoshop for a while, not a single piece of this was news to you. In fact, you may be thinking that masks are so incredibly simple that they barely merit conversation.

However, masking techniques go from simple to wickedly complex really fast. It’s easy enough to paint some broad strokes to erase large portions of an image, but what if you want to do something more complex? For instance, let’s say we want to take the cat below off of its white background.

Furry animals make particularly difficult masking subjects. All of that fine hair detail means making an accurate selection will be time consuming. The Magic Wand or even the Pen Tool are of no use to us here. So how do the pros start with the image above and create a mask like the one below?

Change the Channel

The good news about the cat image is that there is plenty of contrast to work with. The key to making a good mask is finding contrast and knowing how to pull it out. Here we have a fairly dark cat on a bright white background, which means all we have to do is figure out how to leverage our good fortune and convert the contrast already present into a suitable mask.

The first step in a project like this is to jump over to the Channels Palette and look for the channel with the most contrast. So in our case, we want the channel with the darkest cat and the brightest background, which turns out to be the blue channel.

Make a copy of the blue channel, select it and hit Command-L to bring up a Levels Adjustment. Darken the shadows and the midtones so that there is a crazy amount of contrast like in the image below. Be careful to no go too far with this adjustment. You’ll want to zoom in and watch the hair detail on the fringes of the fur to make sure you’re not clipping too much. It doesn’t have to be perfectly black and white at this point, some dark grays are acceptable.

At this point you encounter one of the trickiest steps of the entire process. The goal is to get as much of the cat as closest to black as you can. This is easy for the face potions and other random spots near the center, just grab a black brush and fill them in. But what about the edge of the hair?

It turns out one of the best ways to handle this task is to use a couple of unlikely candidates: the Dodge and Burn Tools. The reason these work so well is that they can accurately target certain ranges of gray extremely accurately. I set the Dodge Tool to target the highlights and the Burn Tool to target the shadows, grab a medium size soft brush and make my way around the edges of the image, burning shadows and dodging highlights until I like the level of detail that I’m seeing.

This may sound like a time-intensive task, and it can be for some images, but in truth the Dodge and Burn Tools feel like magic when you’re using them and take much of the work out. I was able to come up with a great looking silhouette in only a minute or two.

Once you’re done here, hit Command-Shift-I to inverse the channel so that the cat is white and the background is black like in the image below. Remember that, in masking, white is opaque and black is transparent.

Converting the Channel to a Mask

Now that we have a channel that accurately represents what we want from a mask, how do we convert it? There are a few ways to do this but the easiest is just to Command-click on the channel to load a selection. With a selection loaded, return to your cat layer and click the New Mask button. That’s all there is to it!

Defringing the Mask

As you can see, despite a super detailed mask, we still have some white fringing occurring around the edges. Getting rid of this can literally take hours of tedious work if you don’t know what you’re doing. For starters, we can use the fantastic new Masks Palette in conjunction with Refine Edge to make some live adjustments to our mask.

Utilizing these tools properly takes practice. I won’t cover them closely now because it would take so much time but I encourage you to dig in and play with all of the controls to get a feel for what they do. Often, you can patch up a rough edge in seconds with these sliders, but with our cat project I wasn’t really getting any results that I liked so I cancelled out this operation altogether.

Instead, I went to the Layer menu at the top of the screen and selected Matting>Color Decontaminate. This is an almost hidden command that has the ability to yield some amazing results. As you can see in the image below, it went a long way toward reducing our halo. Note that this command is actually destructive so you should always duplicate your layer before using it.

From here, the last trick I use is to look for problematic areas and actually run the clone brush over the fringes. The mask keeps everything looking nice and cloning replaces unnatural colors with those from the actual fur of the cat in other places. Compare the back and head of the cat in the image below to that above to see the improvement.

Finishing Up

From here it becomes a factor of how much time you want to spend refining your result. With complicated masks like these there is always room for improvement but you’ll find that the point of diminishing returns on your time spent becomes easier and easier to spot as your skill level improves.

The technique we just discussed is just to give you a taste of how advanced masking can become. There are a ton of different types of images to mask and therefore a million different tricks and techniques to figure out along the way which can be mixed and matched on a per-project basis. Practice makes perfect, just be bold and never become intimidated by a masking job that seems too complex. Think through the process one step at a time and find ways to pull out the detail you need.

First: when I create characters, no matter how far they’re developed, I always give them a one-word prompt or theme to try to start the foundation on. In cases where I’d create kids between characters, this has actually helped quite a bit.

As shown in this example image, even characters based solely on a one-word concept can bring a lot of fun and creativity when makin’ kids. Compounding the words together, associating them with a third word in common, there’s plenty of room for wordplay after the foreplay! XD

Now be wary of “compounding” systems like the left-hand side of this family tree. Notice how, after the compound word is made, I simplify it to a more easily handled term. If you create a system that doesn’t use compound words but still “compounds” the characters’ prompts, instill some way to simplify the prompts so that players don’t bend over backwards finally figuring out the only two cast members who make a “ sports-man-ship “ child.

Otherwise, have fun with different ways to represent individual family members! Prompts could be words, but the PCs could also represent characters and children by RGB colors (and adding, subtracting, averaging, etc. the RGB values for the kids). Get creative with how to represent your characters in the simplest prompts like this!

Next: we’ve covered the semantic side, but what about the syntax? the “pen” bard child above could be a wordsmith with some skill in music and spacial magic from their parents, but do they have their bard parent’s charisma? Their mage parent’s magic skill? There’s lots of different ways to go about calculating a kid’s stats, including just rolling/point-buying them like you would any other new character. However, I’d take a more genetic approach:

Calculate the parents’ average score per each stat, then roll 1d6 to have some genetic mutation to add some variety! Assign the mutations to the stats you want, or assign them by the order you roll them. Whatever you’re feeling! As for classes, equipment, gold, backstories, etc., that all is basically the game itself! The stat rolling makes your character borderline playable, and the creative prompts give you some idea what the character is like. But fleshing out the character can be integrated into the campaign, and it could be a nice, less violent change of pace to interrupt the “Great War” or the “Threat of the Dark Lord” for a bit to watch the kids learn, grow, and eventually decide their classes in a coming-of-age style semi-campaign. Or, if your group is short on time, DMs can put their players through a lightning round: instead of acting out the story in-game, have the players improvise the kids’ life stories so that they can be brought up as playable characters instantly. A Full, Extensive, Thorough Guide to Streaming Video Games for Beginners

There's no secret. Streaming video games has caught on with many gamers like wildfire. The technology has finally adapted so that anyone, young or old, can start a streaming career even with basic equipment. Some streamers have seen success even with a one-monitor setup, while others who have gone all out on purchasing loads of equipment haven't seen much success at all. It proves that equipment—green screens, high-end sound equipment, multiple monitors—isn't the key to success.

So, then what? How does one get from point A, just beginning a stream, to point Z, developing an audience that actually pays you money for entertainment? It's honestly never an exact science to tell you the truth. A lot of it has to do with personality, who you network with, who you support, and what to expect from all of that. But I would argue the most important thing of all is never get discouraged with streaming video games. Millions of aspiring content creators all have the same idea—you want to create content that nobody has seen before. You've got great ideas! You want to plan out everything and start growing your community, and you know you can do it well.

I don't mean to discourage you. The road ahead is long and tiring. But you can traverse it if you put your mind to it and don't let up.

Thus begins the guide you need to start streaming video games. I can give you the keys, show you the door, and maybe even open it a crack for you. But you have to pull that door open the rest of the way, and nobody will do it for you.

Where to Start? Get Your Equipment

The good news is that some of you may already have enough equipment to start streaming video games and you don't even realize it. The PS4 and XBox One have built-in streaming capability along with camera support (if you have them) so you don't really need to concern yourself with bitrate, resolution, keyframe settings, or anything else that might be too confusing. I remember when I first started streaming and I was overwhelmed at all the settings—I started off with the wrong resolutions and didn't realize how shit my streaming setup looked until I actually got the brains to bring up a stream feedback.

Regardless, streaming via console isn't a bad idea to start because it can get you some kind of exposure. You don't even need a separate monitor or TV, although I do recommend you get a headset so you can hear the game audio without it repeating through an external microphone. I can't tell you how many streams I've heard where there's a very obvious echo from an external speaker and microphone that isn't on a headset. It's low quality and people will be turned off from it.

If it's your desire to start investing in some equipment, welcome to intermediate streaming. I would definitely recommend getting a second monitor, one to view your game on and a second to watch chat, have a stream feedback up, audio controls, and of course your streaming program. It all depends on what you want to monitor though—I run three monitors and a television which honestly is overkill for me. I try to fill up screen real estate only to recognize I don't even need the windows I have up.

Generally, you only need to be concerned about one of two programs. Those would be OBS and XSplit, the latter of the two I prefer. OBS is free, XSplit is paid. I just prefer XSplit over OBS because the UI is a little cleaner and the function terminology makes more sense to me. Most people I know use OBS, but I'd recommend trying out both to see what you think about either of them. I won't go into detail on how to set these up because that could take a lot more blogging. Instead, I've written a guide on how to stream using XSplit. It's a little outdated because of hardware upgrades, Amazon servers (I'm on Mixer now), and other factors, but should still hold true for anyone wanting to stream on either program.

A capture card is next. The two most selected brands for capture cards in the streaming universe are Avermedia and Elgato. Elgato is known to have fantastic customer service, Avermedia is known to have better hardware. I own both and I can attest to that. Pick one, I don't think you can go wrong. Some people go with higher-end capture cards because generally "gamer-related" products aren't worth the actual money, a lot more of the money pumped into them is just spent on marketing to gamers (coughrazer). But for these specific capture cards, I think they're actually worth it.

If you get an external card, be aware there will be wires. Many of them. Especially if you have multiple consoles, which brings me to switches.

Switches are nice pieces of equipment for video game streaming. I know plenty of streamers that have multiple consoles attached to one switch, and some of them detect their power so they automatically "switch" (ha) to the powered console and so there's no fumbling with buttons or trying to remember which console is on which output. It's just a matter of convenience so you're not fumbling with unplugging wires. Keep in mind that if you're using a switch to manage video output to your capture card, you will have a LOT of wires. I hold all my consoles in one ventilated hutch to keep clutter down. Clutter will happen if you decide to go this route.

Streaming started getting more popular around the time Intel Sandy Bridge processors released, so the technology has definitely developed so a lot of modern machines have the capability to handle on-the-fly video decoding to send to your stream servers. With that being said, you don't want to get anything meant specifically just for email and word processing. Generally, anything for streaming video games will take an i7 processor, especially if you use the x264 codec for streaming video games—that forces your processor to do the video encoding. Or, you can use NVENC if you have an NVIDIA card for your encoding, which is all in your streaming software settings. NVENC is a heavy drain on video cards, so if you're using a 1-PC setup running Call of Duty: Black Ops IV I would highly recommend an extremely beefy-ass PC, possibly with multiple video cards.

Going the 2-PC route is ideal, however. That's my current setup. I have two keyboards and mice and swap between the two when I need to control one or the other. Think of a 2-PC setup just as if you had a console plugged into your switch, only you control it through a keyboard and mouse setup instead of a controller. This is when your wires can get particularly nuts, especially if you run a KVM switch. I do not recommend a KVM switch, because it is cumbersome to have to switch between control sets just to change things on your streaming PC. Try and get two sets of a keyboard and mouse. I promise you it will work better.

A few last things on equipment: some people prefer using the Elgato Stream Deck which I think is a fantastic piece of hardware, but you can similarly just get a 10-key pad and map scene transitions to it. Do your research on decent lighting. And if you want to invest in really damn good sound, I'd recommend reading TransientGamers' extensive audio hardware guide. He recently hit partnership with Twitch, and he also does sound design for (I think) motion picture. Take a look.

I Can Stream...Now What?

Congrats on moving on with equipment! There's plenty of things you need to keep in mind when you start streaming and while you're streaming. I'll probably start with one of the most important things I've learned in the time that I've streamed.

Always be aware of what you say and do in the eye of the public. I've had numerous incidents where I've let something horrid slip, or I showed something I didn't want to show to an audience of people. What people tend to forget is that everything you say and do can be taken out of context, so even if you say or do things that are intended to be harmless, they can be used against you for harm. There was one time I let something slip on accident and around the same time a very prominent YouTube celebrity was under the scrutiny of the media for saying something similar to what I said. Thankfully, my current audience understood my intents and they laughed at my blunder. But remember, you are being recorded and anyone can copy what you've said to use it against you while you're streaming video games.

Second. Try to think of your stream as a television show. It might be hard to think of it as such a thing, but I've seen far too many people with dead air or constant chair stream where there's really no entertainment value. Remember, one of the biggest aspects to viewer retainment is to be entertaining. Otherwise, why would anyone bother with watching your stream? Television shows hide the politics and focus on the "relaxed fun" atmosphere.

Third. When you start off streaming video games, it's good to have a few scenes already set. Your first scene should be some kind of "Stream Starting" deal with something moving. You never want an entirely static stream. Ever play a video game that just says "Loading..." and doesn't show any indication of movement? Maybe it's the case that the game froze, or the computer locked up? You won't know unless you have something moving. A timer works great for this too, although I wouldn't recommend it right off the bat—if you set it for 5 minutes and don't have enough time for a full setup before the stream begins, either you'll start unprepared or you'll piss off people that come into your stream. Have something moving.

Another good scene to have is a motion-based "BRB" screen. There are plenty of small video clips and animations online you can purchase for cheap and just put a text source in it to notify others you're human and you need to pee sometimes. I've seen some people literally put up a BRB screen and go eat dinner for 30 minutes—it works. Others I've watched literally stop the stream. No. Don't.

Of course, there's the main stream scene. This should include your game. If you haven't thought of that part already, then maybe streaming isn't for you. Typically they include the webcam, sometimes a few stream stats, and other widgets to show on screen. Here's what my main

screen looks like, although I've just recently moved to Mixer as I outlined in the previous blog post. Some people prefer the pure, simple webcam/green screen/game look, others might prefer a ton of different flashy things on their streams. It's up to you and what kind of audience you might want to attract.

The Not-So-Fun Part

So now we consider what you want to do with your stream. If you want to turn it into a business, you're going to have to network. A lot. One of the things I say constantly is if you want a partnership, or perhaps some kind of viable money, it's important that you are known. If nobody knows who you are, you don't get support. It's pretty simple. There are some methods of getting "ahead" that are very legitimate, such as signing up to do charity streams. Althouigh the intended result with charity streams is to raise money for good causes, a welcome side-effect is that you get publicity. Pursuing charity streams for the intent of making a business out of streaming video games is...well, fuck you if you do so.

Keep in mind that with this day and age of broadcasting platforms, people tend to question the legitimacy of stream viewer counts. If there's 500 people in your channel, the channel lists only 30, and barely anyone is talking, this should raise a red flag for many, many viewers.

In other words, don't viewbot or try to get ahead by using some external hosting service. You will lose support. Partnership isn't everything, and neither is money. Pardon my french, but fuck you if you viewbot. You deserve no support.

But, as before, network. Stop by streams similar to yours. Say hello to people, even if you don't know them. You need to service people before they service you, and sometimes you get serviced, so return the service. You'll eventually find someone you click well with, and use each other to network.

If you use people to get ahead...well, you get the idea.

Attend cons if you can, find local groups, reach out to people on social media, and stop by their channels. Sometimes even boring content creators turn into your viewers, so don't be afraid to stick around someone's channel for the sole purpose of gaining a viewer. Visit channels on Discord, check out new channels from time to time, but I would advise not to automate any kind of social media. I used to put up auto-DMs in my Twitter and I would drop a link for people to check out. That never worked.

What did work is when I would engage in conversation with them. I'd stop by their channel, host them a few times, and maybe even donate and sub. Eventually, a broadcaster can turn into a viewer if you play your cards right. And if they don't, stop supporting them. That's it.

Also, do not go into another person's channel and announce "Yo streamer, I'm going to be streaming X game today!" That's a blatant advertisement of your own stream, and you're likely to get kicked or even banned if you pull that. Always be cognizant of the rules of anyone else's stream, and read them thoroughly before you even say anything. I've learned the hard way with that.

As before, network. Find the legitimate people you enjoy. Figure out who you can network with, and establish relationships with them. Eventually, you'll build something where some of your users are shared and some of their users are shared, since your audiences tend to like the same kind of humor, and birds of a feather flock together.

Lastly on this topic, although you may have made friends in some sense, recognize these are working relationships. However you treat whatever platform you broadcast on, recognize that some people will be trying to take advantage of you. Be amicable with people, but remember some people are out solely just to make a career playing video games and don't care who you are. I'm not much of a "magnetic" person, unfortunately, and I've been in the seat before where suddenly many, many people I didn't know had a strong interest in me. It's a weird feeling, and there were times I let it get to my head.

Don't. Having a large ego in this business will only cause you to lose support. I would know.

But, with all that said, I would caution you, reader, that at the first sign of someone doing unethical, shady things, do not pursue the relationship further. I wouldn't say burn the bridge, but keep your guard up with the particular person. Being used is never a fun thing.

A Business? Or a Hobby? Or Both?

This is always a hard question to answer because it feels like both often times. There are some ethical issues I've always had with it, so I try not to pursue too much with it. However, if you're able to distinguish between a business and a hobby, I have some tips for you with the former selection.

I started a spreadsheet (or many) that tracks the following: Profit and Loss, Preshow, Postshow, and Weekly Checklists, "extra" benefit recipients (for Patreon, Gamewisp, others), User Acquisition (how people came to your site and how you get them to stick), content timelines (internal and for your viewers), SEO, and whatever might come to your mind if you are really serious about streaming video games. I would definitely try to put effort into marketing your own self constantly. Truth be told, there are some aspects to content creation that are not fun. When you're not streaming, and for many that's about 6-8 hours a day, you have to dominate social media channels.

What exactly do I mean? I mean spread your name as far as the eye can see. Share your channel and its content as much as you can. Make sure your YouTube channel is up-to-date on clips. Make sure you use tumblr. Get those social signals and hit them hard. I've heard of pretty rough stories of 16 hour days of streaming, social media, content creation, blogging, networking, and pretty much doing whatever else is necessary to spread your brand for streaming video games. Generate your Discord and be sure to plug it regularly so you can build your community. But remember to take time off, too—never let this difficult career path affect your health. It's not worth it.

Also, if you decide you want to stream for the money, you are doing it for the wrong reasons. Streaming video games for a living takes more work than you think. It's a fun job, but expect your time to be limited and your significant others to dislike you. Or maybe even leave you.

En Conclusion

That's what I have to say for now, for part one. I've been streaming video games for 5 years, but there's plenty I don't know. “Good lord, Seth! Just assign us the mission!” Hunching his back, Steve leaned his elbows on the front desk. He held his face in his hands as the headache formed beneath the surface.

“Simmer down, stovetop, there’s a process here.” Seth said in his auto-tuned sing-song customer-service voice, which crashed tremendously with his frank word choices, “A slow ass process, but a process. Now, if you could get your grimy elbows off my counter, I might be able to speed up that process for you—Piccard! My beloved! Could you give me a hand?”

Steve straightened his back and turned his head towards the open window. An avian-like being with mechanical wings fluttered through the window—they were about the size of an eagle, if not a tad taller.

“Seth! I got the most recent update on the Auction. It’s all ready for the SHORTS.”

“You think we got enough information to go off of? We haven’t even been able to track down all the backers”

“Yeah it’s—” That moment of confidence from the small cyborg left in an instant, “It’s pretty rough. We won’t be able to take down the entire operation at this rate.” Piccard twitched his wings and shuffled their feet. “But there’s an Aerthian for sale now.”

“WHAT!” Seth’s reaction was a bit dramatic; however, Steve still raised his eyebrows—even he was aware of the rarity of such a being.

“Yeah, I know, Joan bumped this mission up to priority one.”

In his chest, Steve felt a buzz begin to swelter. Each mission, rescuing another being: It never got mundane enough to let the cool calmness sweep in. His hands began to twitch. This was going to be rough.

“Can you send Prisma and Eira the details then, Piccard?” Steve asked. Piccard chirped and nodded in agreement, jumping in front of Seth to type on the computer in front. “Great, talk to y’all in a couple days, unless you two take the week off for your honeymoon.”

Seth and Piccard, together behind the secretary desk, cheered and bid him ado. Steve walked back to the common room, where his team, dubbed SHORTS, were gathered.

“Okay, yeah no, it IS a lot harder than it looks. You don’t just get to code up a simulation on my gymnastics routine and accuse me of exaggerating. You don’t even have legs!”

“Oh sorry Ms. Visual Basic, I’m not the one who bitch-slapped the judge in my non-existent adolescence for being a sore loser. I just wanted to know if you got robbed as you say you did. The results are in, and they say, ‘Get good.’”

“Mike! Prisma! Will you be quiet! My microphones are at least a century old and they’re still picking up your bickering!”

Spikes flew across the room. One stabbed into the ground next to Mike, who was bridge-posing over the small compact portable computer, Prisma. The other zoomed past Eira, embedding itself into the wall. Eira, unfazed, simply turned another page in his book with a large mechanical claw.

“STAPLE, WHAT THE FUCK!?” Mike yelled.

“Staple says they’re tired of the useless sound waves, which, I mean, coming from your mouth, that’s a fair assessment.” Prisma said.

Steve sighed, entering the room, walking around the ice sculptures Eira was making on the ground with his ‘feet’.

“Prisma, Eira, you got the memo yet?”

“Yessir,” Eira spoke—in such a way that did not respect authority. “Waiting on you.”

“Memo? What memo?” Mike lifted herself up, no longer curved over the small pc.

“We’re heading out to the Auction today” Prisma said.

“You’re telling me this now? God, nobody tells me anything.”

Steve sighed again, “Eira, give me the strategy.”

The gears turning in Eira’s head and body were audible, as he noticeably sat straighter on the couch that was not doing so well under all the weight. His voice was dancing in the air as he begun, “The Auction’s held at the old Noir Scraper, but since security’s going to be watching the guests at the launching pad, we’re going to enter from the bottom—”

Mike stood at the trap door that would lead her inside the building. She ran a finger down her forearm, adjusting the color of her suit to change from ruby to obsidian. She could not change the bright reflective color of her bald marble head, but she could at least try and blend in.

This was not one of the missions where Mike would just charge in and expect things to work themselves out. It helped, at least, that she did not need to make the plan. That was Eira’s job, the master strategist. She held Prisma to the door and waited as the computer unlocked the trap door effortlessly and wirelessly. Mike lowered Prisma, holding her with her legs, and lifting herself up through the trap door with her arms.

Prisma, to pester her, sent Mike the image of her virtual self, a greyscale woman in a vintage dress, sitting on a chair as Mike lifted said chair into the air, laughing her ass off. Hardy har har, short stack, Mike replied. Prisma, ever so serious during these missions, had the gall to giggle at the pun.

Mike navigated the underground tunnels, searching for the security door that would allow Staple, Eira, and Steve inside. The three bulky figures were not apt for a stealth mission, but they all knew that this would quickly escalate to a battle royale if they were to get their hands on the Aerthian. Mike had to trust that Eira had a damn good escape route planned.

Steve waited at the back door for Mike and Prisma. He leaned against the door, watching Eira and Staple stand completely unmoving. He wondered if it was a good idea for both Staple and Eira to come along. He was not expecting to need so much ‘muscle’ for this sort of mission. And Staple was newer to the team, and Steve was not sure how to read them yet.

Steve supposed the language barrier did not help matters—Staple preferred to communicate through traditional signals, and thus Steve could not communicate with them unless they were physically linked and Steve had a translator interface. Steve did not have the wireless communication abilities as advanced as Eira and Prisma. And if Prisma and Eira had not explained to Steve the advanced, but peculiar, open-source origin of their programming, Steve would admittedly underestimate Staple’s processing capabilities.

As if his thoughts were being bunched together in his head into bouquets, Steve felt a strange guilt, staring at the robotic arm he resented. He was learning.

The door opened, and Eira gave the team directions while Prisma was able to disable the alarms. Steve kept his fists at the ready, searching for any security the two may miss. As the minutes went on, with the group navigating a complex series of tunnels, Steve felt the tension rise higher and higher, waiting for the quiet to drop.

Eira put a hand on Steve’s shoulder, directly messaging him though their specified encrypted channel, “The Aerthian is on the door in front of us to the left, the auction won’t start for another few hours, so we have plenty of time to break in.”

“We don’t know what’s guarding them.” Steve replied.

Instead of messaging him back, Eira’s entire body nodded. He didn’t really have a head.

Steve walked ahead of the group and crouched by the door. He activated a small thermal camera on his fingertip and stretched it outside its encasement, slipping it through a slit in the door. He angled the camera into the room with the muscles in his hand, reading the heat signatures for any organic presence.

He sensed the Aerthian first, which was startlingly hot—Steve hoped that they were not overheating. Steve was told that the Aethian would be a small, compact, spider-plant-like being, who was going to be used for infiltrating and hacking into control rooms. Eira tried to explain to him earlier the dark nuance of such a fate, comparing the small creature to a fairy in a bottle being treated like a dangerous exotic pet.

There was one other heat signature in the room. Approximately human in shape, though Steve had enough experience reading heat signatures that this was probably a cyborg or a human with strange genetics. Due to the asymmetry of the signature, cyborg was much more likely.

Steve held up another finger, removed the camera from the room, and turned, gesturing for Eira to unlock the door.

The team swamped the room, the door wide enough to fit two or three of them at a time. They needed to take out the guard swiftly and—

—A loud, screeching signal entered his ears. The dial tones cracked into his skull, etching though his ear canal. Steve saw Staple humming, his entire body clattering.

The cyborg in the black suit was holding the half of his face that was not human, standing in front of the Aerthian’s glass case.

He almost stopped himself from yelling out to Staple, to figure out what was going on, but his body was piercing through the noise, jumping into the air and sending a kick at the security guard. The heat sparked off his foot and burnt the artificial face and hand clutching it.

He jumped back, and he heard Eira message him—which was quite painful without direct contact, Staple recognizes the security as PROJECT $DEE.

Well, they were fucked.

Because he was the one who used to be priority one.

And if The Dragon Witch was a backer in this auction, and if she had her eyes on the Aerthian…

Well, she was forming a collection, wasn’t she?

A flash of light blinded Steve, but he ducked away from the heat. He yelled out, finding the Project’s body again and striking him again with his fists. A hiss whirling through the air, the room sizzled like a rattling snake.

The spots in his eyes fizzled away as his eyelids swatted at them. He kept punching where he thought the Project was and felt a fist pummel into his sternum. He jumped back, feeling flames gather across his body. He searched the room again.

He looked over the Project and saw Mike jumping over and grabbing the Aerthian. The Project saw him look and turned around, shooting a blast at Mike—Mike was juggling both Prisma and the Aerthian in her arms. She swerved around, trying to block the blast with her body. It didn’t work. It hit Prisma.

Steve probably yelled out something, but Staple’s screeches of fear shattered the air. He launched himself again at him but found his fist meeting only air resistance as the Project ducked below him. As Steve hit the ground, he felt the smooth ice attempt to trip him. Steve was expecting the rough landing. He stumbled a bit in place but kept his balance. The Project was not so lucky.

The Project slipped and crashed his head into the wall. His face crumpled apart.

The loud THUNK THUNK echoed as Staple’s bolts pierced the Project in the gut and the thigh. Blood oozed out of his stomach, oiling the bolt.

The Project stumbled from the wall and swerved in the air; a puppet thrown into the audience. Eira took the chance to grab the cyborg’s mechanical arm and crushed it in his large mechanical claws.

The man howled, writhing under the large metal wrench.

The planet will bow to us underfoot, but they will see no mercy, clutched in our claws.

The voice of his programmer shivered through his mind; Eira immediately let go.

The Project groaned on the ground, his breaths hissing like a tempest. Steve stood, frozen, not by Eira’s floor trap, but at the sound of the cyborg sobbing.

The Project’s visage held tears flowing from the very human side of his face, water twirling into the blood of the mechanical other. The red diffused like watercolors.

Eira was waiting for Steve to say something.

Steve looked down at this cyborg, and he imagined himself strapped to the surgery table after the car crash. The bruise forming on his sternum pounded and swelled.

“Project $Dee, I am calling a ceasefire.”

The Project lifted his head up limply. He let out another breathy grunt. Dee looked away from the team, staring off into the distance. A swelling flood of water filled his chest as the only thought he could find in the cracked desert of his mind was, I want to leave.

The large rectangular robot leaned down, and cradled the Project’s face in his hand, who tried to flinch away, but could barely move an inch.

The blaring fax machine tone was still screeching, and $DEE was scrambling apart.

“We are from ACCRAM,” Steve’s tone was monotonous, practiced, hollow. “We are an organization whose goal is to defend the lives of artificial beings and right the wrongs against them, fighting on their behalf in a universe that sees us as scraps of metal.” And Steve’s voice crackled, and his eyes watered, the irony of such a sight before him, “If you come with us, we will help you. Just as we are trying to help the Aerthians held hostage in The Dragon Witch’s collection.”

Steve saw the Project pulse and fidget, his hair plastering to his face and the tears blurring his features.

Steve reached out his hand, “You can be anything. You don’t have to be hers.”

Dee grasped for breath, and suddenly he was standing before a large cliff, but Dei’dra was there behind him, telling him that this is all he has ever known and all he will ever know.

Without me, you are useless. You are weak. You are powerless. You are mine.

“Trust me, if you don’t come with us now, she’ll just throw you away.”

Kill him.

Before the Project could accept his offer, Staple striked first.

They shot a bolt right through the already disintegrating skull. Staple screeched, clutching their canons. A mixture of memories engulfed them: exploding into a pulp, laying in a heap abandoned, piled inside the auction house.

Red flashing lights and alarms joined the cry, and the room flickered in and out of vision. A blast of yellow shot through the room, landing square on Eira, who tried to block it with his hands. A large hole carved itself into his forearm before the claw promptly fell off.
