‘Honesty - is always the best policy. Learning to be honest with ourselves and others can be difficult but so worth it in the end. Admitting to ourselves that we have a problem with alcohol is tough, but it’s a huge step forward. Even if we don’t do anything about it at first, or keep trying and then giving up, identifying the problem is good. This is our journey, and we may not want to tell everyone of our issues and problems, but seeing and speaking our truth can be so refreshing. It stops us from tying ourselves up in knots by trying to remember what we have said to whom! In a nutshell - be true to yourself, only tell others what you want to, but don’t lie. ‘ The A - Z of Alcohol and Sobriety: Everything you need to know. ‘Neurons - are part of our nervous system. They send and receive messages from each other through chemical and electrical energy. They are found throughout our body and we have around 86 billion of them in our brain and around 500 million in our gut alone! Alcohol stops our neurons communicating with each other and causes the slurred speech, poor memory and movement we encounter when we are drinking. It also stops us from listening to our Gut Instinct, which can lead to us making decisions that we may not have made had we been sober. https://www.verywellmind.com/how-many-neurons-are-in-the-brain-2794889’ The A - Z of Alcohol and Sobriety: Everything you need to know. ‘Singing - is a wonderful way to express ourselves, even if the cat covers its ears when it walks in the room. I love to sing. There is such a sense of freedom in it. Until others tell us otherwise and try to constrain us. Unless you are lucky enough to be a good singer of course. I’m tone deaf but I love nothing more than singing out loud. Luckily for me, my 18-month-old grandson loves it! ‘Distraction – I used alcohol for this for way too long – to numb and distract from physical and emotional pain, boredom and loneliness. What is it/was it distracting you from? If you’re just starting out, then it’s important to identify this so you can be prepared. Listening to a podcast I heard some talk something along the lines of ‘Addiction is always there in the corner, doing its press ups and getting ready to flex its muscles. You’ve got to be ready.’ This is so true. Once we quit, we need activities to distract us from our addict voice, so armour up. Exercise, meditation, eating (oh boy did I eat – get healthy snacks in), writing, reading, posting and reaching out, connecting, playing it forwards, hobbies. Anything you can do to get through, until you get to the stage where you can just simply just laugh and tell it to f*** right off!’ The A - Z of Alcohol and Sobriety: Everything you need to know. Sabotage - is when someone deliberately tries to stop others from succeeding and is something we are all capable of – we even do it to ourselves. Hello again Ego. When it comes to our old drinking partners their sabotage can come out in full force. Remember we cannot control others or their actions, just our own reactions. It is difficult when we have the Addict Voice tempting us to drink, but when ‘friends’ jump on board too it can make it even harder to resist. The only people that will try to sabotage our sobriety journey, are those who have an investment in us still drinking! True friends will cheer us on and be proud of us. If someone encourages you to drink today, ask yourself what it is they have to gain from you doing so and what it is you have to lose. If you give in you will be sabotaging your own Recovery.’ The A - Z of Alcohol and Sobriety: Everything you need to know. ‘Humour - can be found, even in stressful situations. Like the gust of wind when we are sprinkling our loved ones ashes, the Fawlty Towers or Sketchy Grange stay, the time we reversed the car into a bollard. Oh. Is that just me then? Humour is a bit like the sun, we can’t always see it, but it will come out and shine on us later. A very good friend once asked me “Will this really matter when you are 80?” I use this all the time now to matter what really matters in life. So if you are feeling stressed today, try asking yourself if it will matter in years to come and remind yourself that one day this could well be a talking and laughing point’ The A - Z of Alcohol and Sobriety: Everything you need to know. Obviously this really will still matter when I’m 80 but not all the nitty gritty. I’m focussing on the fun stuff today. Stay curious and be kind to yourself today. You will see people talking about their Higher Power in sobriety and it can be off putting if you are not religious - in fact it can make some people run for the hills so hopefully this will help: ‘Higher Power - is said to be something greater than us. I think we all have our own greatness; we just need help to find it. My higher power is anything, or anyone who can help me to achieve and recover. My sober communities are my higher power. You are my higher power, for giving me the motivation and inspiration to write this book.’ From the A - Z of Alcohol and Sobriety: Everything you need to know- it’s a great place to start. Aiming to accept everything today whilst remembering my hula hoop and remaining hopeful 🙏 ‘Acceptance - is a small word with a huge impact and makes for a happier and easier life. Resistance makes us sad, angry, frustrated and depressed. It keeps us stuck. Accept what is. Accept what’s done. Accept your areas of control. Accept that we only ever have this moment. I assure you it will be easier by the time you get to the end of this book. For example: you’ve quit drinking. Others around you continue to drink. You resent this. You think they should quit to support you. It’s triggering your Addict Voice, ‘If you can’t beat them join them’. You are battling with yourself. And then you can go into battle with them. If you accept your sobriety is your Choice, and the fact that others have the right to their own choices, it will be easier. Let others be. Except that this is not their journey, it’s yours.’ From The A - Z of Alcohol and Sobriety: Everything you need to know. Practising my breathing exercises today and being in the moment. ‘Anxiety Management- there are three parts to this: thoughts, physical symptoms and behaviours. Breathing is the most important thing. Sounds simple, but we often hold our breath of breathe too quickly and this brings on physical changes. Practising breathing exercises will help, but here’s what to do in an emergency: make a forced breath out, you will then automatically breathe in, control it and slow it. When we are breathing in and out too quickly (hyperventilating) the carbon dioxide and oxygen levels in our blood become imbalanced and lead to tingling and lightheadedness. To correct the balance, simply cup your hands over your nose and mouth and slowly breathe in and out. Nothing deep. Just normal breaths. To prevent hyperventilation, know your physical warning signs. Mine is a thump in the chest or a weird spidery feeling over the back of my head. As soon as you get this just breathe. Slow regular breaths. Often, the physical symptoms are the first signs of an anxiety surge or panic attack. If we can control this, it will help us think and behave more rationally and deal with the cause. Here’s an example of what happens if we don’t do this:’ … see photo! From The A-Z of Alcohol and Sobriety: Everything you need to know by moi - Corinna Alderton. Yesterday I wrote about working our sobriety and mentioned our Tool Box which we need for any addiction or life change. Here’s more from my book The A - Z of Alcohol and sobriety. ‘Tool Box - This is our box of tricks to be off our cravings, triggers, altered/unhelpful thinking and addict voice. Every job needs tools for the work to succeed, Sobriety is no different. One size does not fit all and we need lots of tools to help us through. What works for us one day, may not work the next. We need a good selection. Hopefully, reading this book, you’ve now got some really good ideas and resources but that does not make your toolbox full. We can really learn from ourselves – from each craving, milestone, challenge and reset. Stay curious and don’t be the poor work person who always blames their tools!’ You can fill your box by reaching out, posting, reading and connecting. For more ideas on resources and where to start and maintain sober life then check out my book on Amazon (available worldwide) 🍵🫖☕️💦 Chin Chin 💖 #addiction #alcohol #recovery #sober #alcoholfree #dating #quitlit #podcast #soberpodcast #sobriety #sobrietybooks #recoverybooks #Healthandwellnessbooks #alcoholrecoverybooks #booksonaddictionandrecovery #alcoholismselfhelpbooks #sobrietygiftsforwomen https://www.instagram.com/p/CkpxE2WMuEA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Worried about your Alcohol consumptions or any addictions you may have? Want to know more? Here’s a little something to help you get started from ‘The A - Z of Alcohol and Sobriety: Everything you need to know’ available worldwide on Amazon. ‘Work It - sobriety Is so much more than stopping drinking. If we just put the drink down we will be white knuckling it, climbing the walls and more than likely to relapse. It’s what many refer to as a dry drunk. We have to work out sobriety: Read Quitlit , listen to podcasts, join a sober community and post, read, reach out, connect. Join a zoom meetings, aa, or other support groups. Learn to identify our emotions and work through them. Get help to do so; books, podcast, online courses, therapists. Use our toolbox. We don’t have to do all of this, and certainly not all at once, but the more we do, the more sense it will make and the easier it will be. If we put as much effort into our sobriety as we put into our drinking, then we are far more likely to succeed.’ 🍵🫖☕️💦 Chin Chin 💖 #alcohol #alcoholfree #addiction #sobriety #mentalhealth #quitlit #recovery #sobrietybooks #recoverybooks #Healthandwellnessbooks #alcoholrecoverybooks #booksonaddictionandrecovery #alcoholismselfhelpbooks #sobrietygiftsforwomen https://www.instagram.com/p/Cknec7ysNBv/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A random share from my book available worldwide wide on Amazon: Identity Crisis - a term used by psychoanalyst Erik Erickson, along with mid-life crisis. Our biggest identity crisis is in our adolescence, when we start figuring out where we fit in the world. This can be a tricky time for all, with a tug-of-war between our parents, our peers and our conscience. I started drinking when I was 14. Not every day, but a few days a week. My friends and I would work our way around our parents drink cabinets (a real trend in the 70s). Mostly apricot and cherry brandy. We’d drink cans of lager at the park, and on a big night out in Burnham on Crouch, we’s sink two aspirin in a large bottle of cider and drink it threw straws to get drunk quicker. We got away with half pints of lager in the back bar of some pubs, and I remember being allowed to take part in a beer drinking competition at the local village hall – at the age of 16. I got completely smashed that night on whiskey and I’ve never touched it since. I can’t even stand the smell. Anyhow, the whole point of this is for you to see what I did with my identity crisis. I drank my way through it and anaethatised myself. So now, at the grand old age of 57, I am working my way through it along with my mid life one! #alcoholfree #alcohol #addiction #recovery #quitlit #sobriety #sobrietybooks #recoverybooks #Healthandwellnessbooks #alcoholrecoverybooks #booksonaddictionandrecovery #alcoholismselfhelpbooks #sobrietygiftsforwomen https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj2jLINsKQr/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
