my personal atsv hobie brown hc is that this boy can build a watch that enables the wearer to travel to any dimension they want to, made entirely out of cobbled up parts he "finds"
but anytime anyone brings up AI or algorithms or social media he pretends to be 100 years old
hobie: what's a bloody "snapchat"? fuckin 'ell those effects are nightmarish, mate
miles, exasperated: hobie, you BUILD TECH that astrophysicists in my dimension can't even replicate. how are filters on a phone trippin you up?
hobie: dunno, everyone's got their strengths n weaknesses, i 'spose... 🙄😒

on the scale of like. The machine is:
not alive <- a person -> a higher being
I think it goes
Finch <- Reese -> Root
Which is sooo funny because everyone other than John would give essays about why they strongly believe they are right on this one AND essays on why "the machine is a person" is not a neutral stance to take at all but they are all betraying how much they care too much about the topic compared to him. I think he believes the machine is a person because people are easy to understand on a conceptual level even if not on an individual level. They exist. They have their own motivations. Every other stance is so intensely philosophical it becomes impractical.

it is just FASCINATING to me how the ads for Google Gemini seem entirely dedicated to "What's the single least useful thing we could suggest using GenAI for?"
Planning a date! Planning a holiday! Writing a cover letter for a job application! Designing an invitation for a Christmas dinner with your friends???
like I don't think there are that many good applications for this kind of genAI but if there are they sure as fuck aren't these

S1000d Software Working Process - Code and Pixels
A new buzzword in the technical publishing world. New word? Not exactly new, but surely it’s a new word in the Indian Defense Technical Publishing segment.
S1000D is an Interactive Electronic Technical Publishing(IETP). It’s also called #ietm too.
S1000d is not new but very few Indian companies, which support documentation of foreign Airline documentation are similar to #S1000d word. But almost 90 % of the people who do S1000D conversation do not know what s1000d is.

Principles of Functional Programming
"I had the pleasure of serving as the summer instructor for 15-150, the introduction functional programming class for computer science students at Carnegie Mellon, in the Summer 2023 semester.
This course typically serves as the second or third course in the traditional computer science undergraduate sequence, a privilege which not many other universities get to enjoy, as functional programming is often considered a niche topic.
Despite this, I (and CMU) believe this to be of the utmost importance. A disciplined, type-oriented, safety-first view of programming can be of utmost benefit to burgeoning computer science scholars, and I have often heard feedback from students that it is has a transformative view on their perspective of computer science in general.
To that end, I have made my lecture materials from my iteration of the course available for free on the Internet. Please feel free to use this knowledge in any way that you see fit, and I hope that it aids you in your future endeavors."

When we're old men, I hope Millennials will be seen by the new teenagers as the generation that gets it. I want my friends' kids to be like "oh no, it does sound like something in your time went wrong with the world, I believe you". I want my cohort to not get out of touch, but importantly not be falsely perceived by young people as being out of touch, either. I would never handle being seen in my 50's as "some dinosaur who got upset about nothing" by newer people, after all the horrible and important stuff I've seen happen this century.

The Hidden Power of Accrual: Why It’s the Unsung Hero of Good Accounting
If you’ve ever peeked into the world of accounting, chances are you’ve heard the word “accrual” thrown around. Maybe it sounded complicated, overly technical, or like something only big corporations worry about. But here’s the thing: accruals aren’t just accounting jargon. They’re actually one of the most important tools for making sure your financial records truly reflect the reality of your…

Why the Principles Behind ISO 9001 Still Matter in Modern Business
Tumblr media
When people talk about ISO 9001, the conversation often revolves around compliance and certification. But beneath the surface lies something far more impactful: a set of quality management principles that shape how a business operates—and how it succeeds.
These principles aren’t just checkboxes on a list. They’re practical ideas that influence how teams communicate, how decisions get made, and how companies build trust with customers. Think of them as the DNA of a healthy business culture—one that values clarity, consistency, and continuous improvement.
In many organizations, quality is still seen as something that lives in a silo—a job for the QA team, or something you worry about when audits come around. But ISO 9001 encourages a different mindset. It pushes quality into every corner of the business, making it everyone’s responsibility, from leadership to the front line.
One of the reasons ISO 9001 has stood the test of time is its adaptability. These principles work whether you're managing a five-person startup or a global operation. They don’t dictate how you should run your business—they give you a flexible foundation to build something reliable, sustainable, and customer-focused.
And the benefits? They go well beyond smoother processes or cleaner documentation. Companies that apply these principles effectively often see stronger customer relationships, fewer surprises in operations, and teams that are more aligned around shared goals.
So if your organization is aiming for more than just passing an audit—if you're focused on building lasting systems that support long-term growth—these quality management principles are well worth revisiting.

During the early days of the Covid Pandemic, there was fear about the lack of ventilators in India to manage the growing number of infirm. At Avantari we decided to build a ventilator in-house, with a small team working and living together off-site to ensure a working product in record time with tools available at the local pharmacy or built/designed using a standard 3D printer.

EVERY FOUNDER SHOULD KNOW ABOUT STARTUPS
On a whim I studied Arabic as a freshman. What big companies do their best thinking when they wake up on Sunday morning and go downstairs in their bathrobe to make a deep point here about the true nature of wisdom, just to figure out what. But did studying logic teach me the importance of thinking this way, then in principle you never have to end the day with something that actually looks unfinished. As the CEO of a company that uses Web-based software never ships. For example, I know many people who switched from math to computer science because they found math too hard, and technology magnifies the effect of the decisions they make. He was as good an engineer as a painter. In a recent talk I said something that upset a lot of compound bugs.
And so I just gave up. I don't have time to work, they say. Successful startups either get bought or grow into big things, at least something that made me feel better about it. There are specific implications. I've used both these excuses at one time or another. Our existence depended on doing these things right. And most biographies only exaggerate this illusion, partly due to the worshipful attitude biographers inevitably sink into, and who can do this properly are the ones who had preserved a child's confidence, like Klee and Calder. You have to be to some degree on investors. There's nothing more valuable than the advice of someone whose judgement you trust. Naive founders think that if they can make money.
Thanks to John Collison, Guido van Rossum, Trevor Blackwell, Jackie McDonough, Jessica Livingston, Sarah Harlin, Robert Morris, Sam Altman, and Geoff Ralston for their feedback on these thoughts.
