Currently playing Off-Broadway in repertory with The Village! A Disco Daydream, is another play written by Nora Burns, the celebratory and deeply poignant David’s Friend, which she also stars in. Originally conceived and performed as a one-night-only piece at Dixon Place in 2015, Burns went on to develop the show with director Adrienne Truscott, leading to an extended run at La MaMa in…

okay sorry to be mean for a sec, but sometimes when you watch film/TV actors perform in theatre they are lacking a bit of that electricity that non-live media gives them, a trick of editing or multiple takes or anything else. I have started having anxiety around seeing beloved film/TV actors in theatre for fear of them lacking that punch. but when they do have it, and it’s a role so different from what you may have known them for, it is just. oh man. these guys got it.

Today is the day Bo Burnham fans have been anticipating/dreading for years—
His DEATH date 💀
Tumblr media
Yes, the day has finally arrived.
Will Bo acknowledge this joke about his dog dying via a bomb in some fashion today?
youtube
Or, more likely, will he have completely forgotten about his prediction from 2015? Only time will tell.
Tumblr media
In other news, it's the first night of Kate Berlant's one-woman show at the Pasadena Playhouse. She has confirmed that this will be the last run of her play directed by Bo, so try to see it if you can—it's an experience NOT to be missed! 👀
Tumblr media
And if you'd like to know more about the show (SPOILER warning—I've included all the secrets, so don't read if you want to be surprised!), check out my complete list of KATE articles and interviews here. ✌🏼🐔

i saw fern brady!
a friend and i went to see fern’s show ‘autistic bikini queen’ at the soho playhouse last night. this is how close we were:
Tumblr media
it was a sold-out show (though a small venue tbf) and general admission, so we were quite lucky with our seats.
some highlights:
fern said nyc audiences are so nice compared to the uk. (treat your comics better, people! you have all the best ones!!)
she mentioned taskmaster once, and it got a big cheer. the bit was her saying something about having had an abortion and then (paraphrasing) “you probably didn’t expect me to bring up abortion if you know me from the lighthearted family-friendly show [yes she called it that] taskmaster, but i brought up abortion constantly throughout that show and they somehow cut it out in the edit. ‘good morning, alex! abortion!’” 😂
she called herself vanilla but also talked about how she thought she’d be one of those people who gets invited to masked orgies full of rich people, which greatly amused me.
she started telling a joke using the word “willy” and was then like “wait you don’t call them that here. what word should i use? wiener?” and someone shouted “dick” and someone else shouted “cock” so she alternated between those, but the way she said “cock” was sooooo funny, like she wasn’t sure how it was pronounced.

I kind of wonder what a cozy horror Animal Crossing/ Dreamlight Valley game would be like.
Chucky & Tiffany could live in a playhouse as dolls always squabbling but love each other like an old married couple
A farm area where Pearl & Leatherface live
A theater where Pearl & Sandy{Last Night at Soho} can do a song & dance performance or Asami Yamazaki {Audition} can do ballet
Cabrini Green apartments from Candyman for characters that live in the city
Tom Nook Patrick Bateman {American Psycho}
A highschool for Sidney Prescott, Laurie Strode, Nancy Thompson {Nightmare on Elm Street} Ginger & Bridget {Ginger Snaps} and Ghostface go.
Summer & Halloween DLC with Michael Myers & Jason Voorhees
Hanging out with Horror characters like Sadako , Candyman, Freddy, Carrie & walking around locations like the Overlook Hotel {The Shining}

Cat Smith's one-woman show Waxing Matilda starts performances today(!) as part of Group 3 in the SoHo Playhouse’s Lighthouse Series. It's a truly fantastic piece of theater, in writing and performance. I'm so proud of Cat, and grateful that I got to be a part of this production. Even if you have no investment in us personally, it's never a bad idea to patronize live theater, especially the new and independent--you're not just supporting us by coming, you're supporting the other shows in Group 3, and the SoHo Playhouse as a whole!
Group 3 is performing today 4/28 at 4PM, Friday 5/3 at 9PM, and Sunday 5/5 at 7PM

Ghost of John McCain
Tumblr media
GHOST OF JOHN MCCAIN by Scott Elmegreen & Drew Fornarola, directed by Catie Sanderson Davis: The Soho Playhouse may be the most uncomfortable theater in town (thought I’m open to other suggestions), and it is in no way accessible. I had to navigate a steep stairway to get to a men’s room that doesn’t bother to have a stall to separate the toilet from the urinals and then cram myself into a seat that seemed to have been salvaged from an elementary school for the perpetually skinny. And for most of the time, I just didn’t care. Davis’ production is tight and professional, anchored by a solid performance by Jason Tam as John McCain, who has died and migrated to the brain of Donald Trump (Aaron Michael Ray). The political satire comes fast, furious and tuneful, with Lindsey Graham (Ben Fankhauser) in leather gear singing of what a good boy he was to put his ass-pirations at Trump’s disposal, Trump (Luke Kolbe Mannikus) heralding “The Art of the Deal” and Hillary Clinton (Lindsay Nicole Chambers) issuing a resounding “I Told You So.” There’s a serious element when a Karen (Zonya Love) shows up and tries to explain why she became enamored of Trump despite all of what should have been liabilities (“the overlooked learn to overlook”), and Tam has a kick-ass power ballad, “Wait.” The show is a bit over-written. You keep getting what feels like the big 11 o’clock number, and then it all keeps going. It’s like following “Rose’s Turn” with “The Ladies Who Lunch” and then breaking out with “Move On.” And that’s when I realized how much my butt hurt (imagine, the whole world wired to my ass). But they pull off a strong finish, so I didn’t care. And the standing ovation the cast earned, was a bit of a relief.
