For her outfit, Blaze's top resembles her canon design, purple with long sleeves, white cuffs, and a gold necklace. Rather than her usual white leggings, however, she instead wears white pants with a slit down the side, allowing them to flap loosely around her ankles. A gold crown-like band ties her feathery hair back in a ponytail, and a red sash is tied around her waist. White feathers are on her ankles, and her feet are white, bird-like talons with dustings of purple scales.

Behind Blaze is Solaris, a being with a body plan similar to Blaze's but alien, statuesque features. Cracks mark her edges, as if she is made of stone. She is primarily a pale yellow-white, like sandstone, gradating to a dark red at the ends of her limbs and tip of her tail. In the center of her chest is an empty hole, shaped like an emerald. It is pale blue. Her head is smooth and bird-like. Her "eyes" are large, angular slits of pure ruby. Three slits of blue lie under each eye, like tear drops. On her forehead is a mark like a gem split in half. The left half is pale red, the right half the same color as her eyes.

Her limbs are slender and tapering. Her hands have three claws each. Her legs end in sharp points, with no feet. Her tail is long and jagged, ending in a spade-like point. Seven red shards fan out from its tip, not connected to the tail by any physical tissue. In the same fashion, six long shards fan from her arms like feathers, and ten rays arc out from the halo-like horns on her head. Between their tips floats an oval jewel, cracked the same as Blaze's. The left side is faded red; the smaller right fragment is rich ruby.

Solaris's pose mirrors Blaze's, making it appear as if her halo and wings are Blaze's. Solaris's left claws rest on Blaze's shoulder, while her right hand cups Blaze's own. /end ID]

some fresh art for my old Rush of Flame AU, a Blaze-centric AU with lots of Rush inspiration, an almost entirely original setting, overly elaborate worldbuilding, a dash of Sonaze, for flavor. Blaze's design hasn't changed much, more the way I rendered it. Solaris's design has changed quite a bit. I wanted to make her like more inhuman, and I think it turned out really well. better look at each of them below.

as for why I drew this now, when I haven't touched this AU in at least a year... well, I was going to do an AU August Challenge, but I immediately fell badly off schedule. very badly. and so I decided that rather than go through the same struggle I did with my extremely ill-fated OCtober last year, I wouldn't try and scramble to finish the challenge but just. draw. at my own pace. when I felt like it.

no checklist. no self-imposed challenge or time limit. just drawing what I felt like, when I felt like it, and taking the time to make something I'm actually happy with rather than rushing to make something "finished". it's a novel concept and frankly? unnerving. what is this. don't like it. take me back to planners and to-do lists where I belong. /lh

Mephiles' reborn into his newest incarnation, Prince Isol. He is trying to pose as royalty in an attempt to slip under the radar and reclaim Iblis, his other half, to return to his true glory as the sun god Solaris. He's a wolf, since Apollo/Helios (god of the sun) in Greek/Roman mythology is associated with wolves, roosters, horses, and cattle. :P Isol has little memory of the events of 06, nor his identity as Mephiles.

Worship of Solaris seemingly began after a single major event: when the city of Soleanna was hit by a huge fire, before being saved by a big eagle.

Eagle symbolism is common throughout Soleannan worship, which is almost certainly due to the fact that Solaris assumes a form that loosely resembles one. To be compared to biblical similes (the fact that events that are difficult to parse in the bible are usually compared to mundane or understood concepts, such as the "impossibly loud" sound of angels being called thunder or the sound of trumpets), it is likely that Solaris was called an "eagle" just in an attempt to process his form or compare it to something understandable, only for this comparison to grow as the understood image of the god.

Additionally, due to the "true form" of Solaris being not an eagle but rather flame, this dialogue heavily implies that worship of Solaris only began when Solaris manipulated a fire to consume Soleanna, before saving the city from the fire he himself caused.

The eagle mural seen throughout Kingdom Valley suggests that Solaris was viewed in a positive, life-bringing light, lording over nature and being responsible for the day cycle. However, the Duke of Soleanna speaks of the Flames of Disaster being released as a known possibility in the Soleannan religion.

Due to this it can be assumed that the royal family and perhaps those close to it (such as Lord Regis, who was involved with the Solaris Project) understand that it was Solaris' flames that burned the ancient Soleanna, and yet they promote worship of the god nonetheless, perhaps out of fear or potentially to further the goals of the Solaris Project.

Regardless, it is known that at least the "old sect" of the Soleannan religion feared Solaris and knew of the ruination he could bring, due to a mural found in Dusty Desert and the prayer heard in Solaris Phase 1.

Dadphiles!Mephiles Sheet

And with that, I've completed all four of 'em!

This one definitely took the longest. I was originally content with re-using my Mobian Mephiles design, but as I developed the story more, I realized I wanted something more personal. I'm super proud of how this came out.

This is technically "spoilers" since this is toward the end (Post-Forces), but I wanted a design that reflected Mephiles/Solaris' change. And I'm too eager.

🔹When Mephiles recombined with Iblis the second time, Solaris regained empathy. His memories of his time with SSS suddenly weighed heavily on the god, but the destruction of time had already begun and Solaris still was not at full power. So, with the help of the Chaos Emeralds, Solaris sacrifices himself to fix his mistakes and ensure the safety of his sons.

🔹Following the events of Sonic Forces, Solaris is re-awoken... but still very weak. As he regains power, he avoids his sons, believing they do not wish to see him. They prove him wrong.

🔹With a second chance at being their father, Solaris assumes the body of a hedgehog—meticulously designed to reflect each of his sons—and simply becomes "Mephiles the Hedgehog". As a mortal, he is much more vulnerable and limited in his power, even if he were to fully recover from his self-sacrifice. Mephiles is willing to risk such a thing for his sons' happiness and trust.

🔹As Mephiles was taken advantage of the last time he assumed a mortal form (ie. The Flame of Solaris), Mephiles is hesitant to let any others know of his identity, even the ones his children claim are trustworthy friends. Therefore, only those who were in Soleanna know the truth... for now.

🔹Mephiles is introduced to the rest of his sons' friends as their dad who raised them, but disappeared when they were kids. Mephiles admits that it was not a good decision, but explains that he was "injured" and "unable to protect them without risking their futures."

🔹Vector and Espio are the only ones suspicious of this random hedgehog that appeared out of the blue, not long after the War, looking perfectly like all three hedgehogs. Hedgehogs that they know aren't blood-related and who were separated by literal decades. However, since no one else seems to be suspicious, the Chaotix believe everyone else might be brainwashed somehow.

🔹Mephiles realizes their suspicions, but doesn't correct them. Both because he does not trust their intentions yet... and that it also amuses him.

🔹The SSS introduce Tails as their brother and Mephiles immediately accepts him and requests to take on the Prower name just as his sons have. Tails, who was worried about disapproval from his brothers' dad, may or may not have broken down in tears at the easy acceptance.

🔹Vanilla, happy to meet another parent of this rambunctious group, often enjoys sharing stories with Mephiles. Mephiles suddenly has to learn how normal mortal parents raise their children, all to continue his charade. Through her, he slowly learns what it means to truly embrace Parenthood.

🔹Vector is jealous of how friendly the hedgehog has gotten with Vanilla. Once again, Mephiles is amused.

🔹Mephiles enjoys messing with Vector, mostly by "coincidentally" appearing whenever he tries talking to SSS, gifting Vanilla different things, and saying some rather suspicious words. This, of course, makes Vector more paranoid.

🔹Despite looking like a normal hedgehog, Mephiles is composed of pure energy and therefore does not need mortal requirements. He can feign eating but it does nothing for him. He appreciates the flavor, however.

🔹As an entity of time, Mephiles is used to viewing all of time at once. As a mortal, that viewing window is smaller, but still means that sometimes Mephiles will use the wrong slang, terms, and translations or even reference something that does not exist yet or no longer exists.

🔹Mephiles is utterly focused on making the most out of this second chance and is willing to go to great lengths to protect all of his children... Even if it means using methods they may not approve of.

🔹Mephiles is the one who enabled Silver to remain in the past. He also later—by request—makes it so Shadow will age alongside his friends.

🔹Mephiles can communicate with the Master Emerald (and the Chaos Emeralds), often expressing his confusion over various mortal concepts. The Master Emerald finds his bafflement amusing, to his chagrin.

Of all the elements that could be improved with Sonic 06, this boss music is not amongst them, but I think that Solaris was given inadequate treatment, as well as its component parts. Personally, I think that a few choice words should be changed, which could certainly make some of the story more palatable. Solaris, despite being a super dimensional being, would have no free will - its intention and purpose imprinted into it by the men that use its light. The king was trying to bring his dead wife back from the dead, and as such acted in grief, and Solaris was imprinted in kind, but only splitting into Iblis (renamed the flames of wrath and despair) and Mephiles (named the shadow of contempt and cruelty) thanks to timely action to prevent the full capacity of the creature to come to pass. As such, it's not the tears of Elise that release Iblis, but the loss of hope (Silver explains the people of the future live without hope which only fuels the beast, keeping it alive), and it is only truly defeated by the faith Silver has in Blaze, and the love she has for him. Mephiles preys on Shadow, because he still has reservations about man and his place amongst them, even if he has come to terms with loss, but also prey on Silver and Sonic for bringing hope into their worlds.

The Solaris that is formed is the Light of Despair and Wanting, a corrupted state that only exists to undo time, because that is the imprint left on it by mankind, one of regret. Only by extinguishing the ember of Solaris' simplest form, by learning of acceptance and sincerity, does the flame become benign - it is a light in the darkness, but some times we need darkness to define the light.
