My favorite scene

I HAVE TO PICK ONE!? Jesus, kill me.

I mean, the angry handjobs on Currahee will never stop bringing me endless joy. And I will always be really proud of ch10, all of it, because getting into Dick's headspace was difficult and I feel really good about how it came out.

But i think the two sections I love the best are the end of ch18, Harry Welsh getting hit up to the death of Hoob, and the beginning of ch27, Tab's perspective on Landsberg.

My favorite chapter (if it's a multichapter)

Overall? ch23. It wasn't one of mine, but it's fucking POWERFUL and hits like a hammer to the solarplexus.

That I wrote? either ch10 or ch29. ch10 for reasons stated above, and ch29 because resolving the ot3 was SO satisfying. So much sex! And then some really rewarding ensemble scenes.

Hardest scene to write

The whole first chapter. It was a battle, and it felt bad and clunky and wrong, and I felt like I was an idiot and it was rubbish and that I was letting my writing partner down by not being anywhere near as good.

And then i had a nap and a gin and tweaked some things and it was fine.

Favorite character to write in the fic

Gotta be Bunny. He's so stupid.

Favorite dynamic to write in the fic

Literally Liebgott/anyone, but particularly Joe/Bunny. Though the Mortar Squad get their own shout out, because not killing Muck and Penkala remains one of the best choices we made in the whole project.

Why I chose that title

It's from the song "Go Farther In Lightness" by Gang of Youths and honest to god, the album of the same name is some of the best music you'll ever listen to.

A fun fact about the fic

We fully believed it was gonna be 50k, tops, when we started plotting it. The initial spreadsheet contains notes like "brief overview of Normandy" and "quick-fire coverage of Germany". BITCH we were 50k+ before they even saw combat!

There were many times in my life where weakness was considered a terrible thing. Where being seen as small or frail felt like a death sentence. Where being perceived as someone who could be easily destroyed was—quite literally—a death sentence. I have been through a lot, most of my followers come from my other account know this. It’s been a long time since those times where I truly was small and it truly was a terror to be so small.

I still fear being small. Being seen by men on the street who yell at me and laugh when I outwardly appear fearful reminds me of those times back then. It reminds me of the men who would laugh at my fear. Unfortunately, unlike the men on the street who left me alone after that interaction, the men of the past were brutal and destructive.

However, I have finally found a place in which I do not fear being small. A person rather than a place. I do not fear being small with her. And I do not mean in the age regressed sense, though that is accurate too. I mean in the appearing physically small, feeling like she is significantly larger than me, feeling like her arm over my shoulders is that of a woman of great stature, like the chest I lay my head upon is the size of the earth I live on—I can feel her heartbeat against my ear and I feel comforted in the sound. She is alive just like me, I time my breaths with hers and it feels like we’re both equally alive in the same moment. I do not fear being smaller than her, I relish in it. I feel deeply safe beside her and nestled up to her side, like a little birdie with her wing gently laid across her lover’s solarplexus.

Did you know the solarplexus chakra is associated with fire? She burns with it. Her body heat is like a balm to my fragile bird bones, I do not fear they will snap with even the slightest shift in weight or grip. She kisses me so delicately it is like I am made of spun glass. She is a Commander, a Goddess, a maelstrom of epic proportions, a towering Knight—she has aspects of herself who are as fragile as me, too. She has the capacity for great destruction and great gentleness. She is a powerful hurricane and a soft breeze on a spring morning, when you can hear the mourning doves cooing and smell the dew on the grass and you know everything will be okay when the sun rises again.

That to say, with all of her vastness, and all of my smallness, I do not feel afraid, I feel safe and protected. I feel like the tiny birdie nestled under the wing of a fierce raptor. A hawk, an eagle, a falcon, whatever suits her fancy. I don’t think I’ve asked what her favorite bird of prey is yet. I’ll try to remember that in the morning.

It’s 2AM and I am reminiscing of the way your fingers felt gently caressing along the nape of my neck, the way your eyes looked at me when I shivered, my eyes gazing up at you in absolute awe—like you had all of the power and you knew that and delighted in it…but also held a deep and intense fondness and adoration. You’re a woman of magnificent duality, and not in the way your abusers designed. This is all you, and I love you.
