A SOLITARY SURVIVALIST ( . . . ), Jake Park's destiny was set even inside his mother's womb. Heir to wealth, noble manners and caretaker of the family reputation and legacy. Growing up the son of a wealthy CEO was always going to put pressure on Jake. When his brother graduated with honours from Yale, the pressure on him intensified. Jake just wasn't the academic type, but his father never really understood his refusal to embrace the expensive education he lavished upon him. Eventually, he rebelled by dropping out of school entirely. Now, he lives off the grid on the edge of the woods. It's been years since he spoke to his father but his mother checks in once in a while. It was she, who eventually called the police. The cops said he got lost in the woods and a search party looked for days, but gave up as bad weather rolled in. Despite passionate pleas from his mother, they never resumed the search and Jake went down in history as another casualty of the woods.
an independent & mostly headcanon-based portrayal of Jake Park from Behaviour Interactive's DEAD BY DAYLIGHT. triggering themes will be present, so please dni if you're a minor. english & german is equally welcome.

frieren: the power of bonds through the ages
I love how peaceful this show feels. There's no shouting, there's no inner monologue during battle scenes. it's quiet, peaceful, mature and introspective.
This is easily the best show I've seen in a while.
frieren is all about bonds through a perspective of someone immortal. On the outside, being immortal doesn't warrant change, but this show challenges that notion, with frieren changing her views on life through her bonds with others. At first, she's an apathetic figure who only knows life as a recluse or battling demons, but through the love of her friends in the hero party/ her new friends Fern/ Stark, she is able to grow emotionally, seeking a life that is filled with adventure beyond her slow paced life beforehand.
Tumblr media
Her journey to understand the fragility of life compared to her immortal and long life is why I think it's the best anime of spring 2024. So many people in her life left her tokens as a symbol of enduring and endearing love so she would never forget her humanity in her lengthy life:
himmel: he created statues of him everywhere they went so she won't forget that she was loved/ so she wouldn't be lonely when he's gone and that he loved her beyond death. He knew he couldn't be with her for a fraction of her life, since a 100 years for her is like a month of something, but the statues outlived him and it was a way for him to be with her if she ever felt lonely. Sad that he never believed that he left a lasting impact on her though, when he basically shaped the person she is today. T-T
heiter/ eisen: founded pupils to accompany frieren now that they are too old to go on adventures with her.
flamme: left her a last token to talk to the dead, knowing that one day she would come to terms with the relationships she forged in life and give her a second chance to talk to the dead something she couldn't say when they were alive.
In a way, they never left the living. Even if they're all gone, Frieren will never forget about them and their impact on her.
The feels are strong with this show. I don't even mind waiting two years for the next season if it means the next season will have the same animation and writing caliber.
P.S. demons in this show are the antithesis of frieren who struggles to express typical human affection gestures, demon words are empty, survivalistic and not sincere. Whereas Frieren is always sincere, seeks for the best outcome that will save the most lives and are full of heart for the people around her.
Tumblr media
Even if she has a solitary personality, she ended up forming strong bonds with the people around her because she truly seeks nothing from life than the simple pleasures like finding grimoires and the adventures. That's why all of her memories are hardly action packed, they're memories of the simple, quiet moments talking to her friends, watching meteor shows and stuff. And that's how life should be: simple and spent with the people you love.

i know its silly to keep harping on that basketball pump IV needle person but their "survival is survival" statement pisses me off so bad. its such a misinformed concept of even just the mechanics of basic animal survival. humans are not a solitary predator species. humans are social apes and survival is something we do collectively. thats how come we humans are so good at "survival" via things like sanitation and proper tool use and standarized methods for treating illness and injury. making iv needles by sharpening a basketball pump on a rock is a good example of survivalist innovation in a specific moment but it is NOT a basis for a functioning society that effectively nurtures and protects its injured, elderly, and vulnerable members to the fullest extent it can.

dwight fairfield
aka: nervous leader
Tumblr media
there it is again
the materialization of your incessant, solid heartbeat that felt like your rib cage was going to crack open whenever the killer was close
serving as an ominous warning for what was about to come next
the generator blows up beneath your imprecise fingers and a curse tumbles out of your mouth before you can consider better of it
and the crude expletive startles dwight
“sorry,” you hastily apologize before continuing to work alongside him, “just sounds like they’re close to us.”
dwight, however, maintains his swiftness while tugging the colorful wires within the generator, “you don’t need to apologize. just try to keep repairing.”
and although he desperately tries to steady his voice, you notice the nervous bounce of his knee because he’s aware that the killer is notified of your current location
honestly, he’s an enigma that you’re unable to solve
dwight carries the characteristics of being a pronounced leader,, locating and increasing the efficiency of teammates whenever he was in Trials
at times, however, his jumpy behavior or how you’ve caught him biting at the tips of his nails contradicts all previous logic
but he’s always like this: incredibly polite yet remarkably strategic
a reluctant brave leader
in your peripheral vision, you observe the methodical way his fingers pull at the wires,, how his dark brows furrowed from atop his thick-rimmed glasses due to his unrivaled concentration
and his efficiency bolsters a wave of confidence to wash over you
“good,” dwight hums in encouragement when the two of you work in flawless tandem, “that’s more like it.”
soon, the shared generator is more than halfway progressed,, the increase of repair speed having a huge impact
but the dire presence of the killer is forewarned in a vicious screech
you both need to make a run for it
dwight’s eyes hurriedly dart to yours before he tactfully orders, “get going, I’ll finish this!”
it’s an executive decision,, one that forces him to contemplate so thoroughly that the edge of his hand comes up to push at his glasses
“what? no,” you shake your head while desperately yanking at the wires in hopes of repairing the generator quicker, “we’re almost done with this and I can’t just leave you here.”
and the second half of your sweet comment has his expression softening because, of course, he knows you’re worried about his well-being
a corner of his lips lifted at the sentiment and it’s such a rare occurrence that you’re left stunned while he reassures you, “you’re always looking out for everyone but listen to me: let me watch over you.”
and sure, dwight’s voice cracks during his confession (which stiffly tumbles out of his mouth) but your cheeks heat up regardless while his next words send you sprinting away with a stronger mentality
“now,” he pauses to send you a single, assured nod, “show me what you can do!”

jake park
aka: solitary survivalist
Tumblr media
typically known as a solo survivalist,, not the type to become sidetracked during Trials
prides himself in his ability to adapt in any circumstance
an excellent teammate to have, especially in the Realms that are centered around the woods
yet, he’ll struggle with building connections outside of Trials and is often found replenishing his toolbox alone while the others are gathered around the campfire
not the best at socializing due to his rebellious nature and tendency to flee when pressure grows, he’s uncertain on how to interact with the other survivors
dark eyes scanning the group, he’d be vigilant yet silent in group settings like this
everyone’s conversing,, attempting to take the edge off of the uncertainty of when the Entity would beckon them into another Trial
light chuckles could be heard but the rare noise doesn’t sway his attention
his fingers work methodically to clean off varying vice grips before laying them carefully in a metal toolbox resting by his feet
and it isn’t until you sidle in the space beside him does he glance up
“jake?”
his name on your lips sounds soft, friendly, and it immediately snatches his attention, “(y/n).”
it’s silent for a couple seconds,, but from the corner of his dark eyes he notes the skittish smile you offer him at the casual mention of your name
you’re fumbling with something
“made this for you to use in the next Trial,” you beckon for him to take the item from your hands, “I figured it might be helpful.”
his gloved hands brush against makeshift cutting wire made from jagged metal wire and two wooden handles
it’s an attempt,, that much is certain by the irregular and ragged notches in the design
but the sentiment is unbelievably sweet
“for me?”
the question sounds foolish coming from him but his awkwardness is overlooked by you when you eagerly nod in response
“you sure?”
just from the shape of it he’s aware that the cutting tool could be used to sabotage hooks (an action he’s never rationalized to commit during a Trial,, yet, it’s a consensus that he’s one of the most agile survivors that could pull off such a feat)
but your blind, compassionate trust in him is the most relevant factor that he’s dazed from
a bright grin tugs upon your lips at his realization, “of course. only you can pull it off, jake.”
and it’s this initial encounter that sparks the habit of jake risking his life to sabotage any hooks whenever you’re being carried by the killer
it’s a strange deed,, how the solo survivalist abandoned his previous ways if you were even in an ounce of danger
because he’s sprinting to your rescue
the time nor place never dwindles his ability to locate the closest hook, slide beside it, and grant you the chance to wiggle out of the killer’s grasp– all while clutching onto the cutting wire you gifted him
-
-
ace visconti
aka: lucky gambler
Tumblr media
“ace, you can’t just keep giving me items during the Trial.”
your exasperation is lost on the male, however, because he’s already tipping the edge of his cobalt-colored hat towards you
he’s a gambler
a lucky one at that
will continually push his odds of being caught in the basement while looting the permanent chest that’s tucked away in one of the dingy corners
“just for you, sweetheart,” he casually mentions while bestowing the offering to you
his breathing is absurdly stable,, considering that he trekked across the entire Realm just to personally hand you the gift
pressing your lips in a firm line, you halfheartedly scold, “time is wasted if you keep this up, ya know.”
and, naturally, he shrugs his shoulders in feigned apology while shooting you a charming grin
despite your reprimand you’re still curious on what he gifted you this time
fingers digging through the contents, a noise of complete awe leaves your lips, “oh, ace.”
because nestled in the middle of the medkit is a plastic bottle of styptic agent,, used to stop wounds from hemorrhaging
highly beneficial to use while healing yourself or another teammate and the rarity of the item equates to it being incredibly valuable
“it’s great but I can’t take this from you,” you pause to close the medkit, “you should have it.”
his bright eyes peer down at you from behind his shades,, noticing the hesitant sweep of your gaze upon inspecting the item in your hands
but ace has different plans
shaking his head, he proceeds to place a gentle hand on your shoulder, “keep it. it should come in handy.”
and of course it’ll be useful because you realize there’s even added gauze within the medkit to heal a couple more injuries
it’ll give the team an advantage
“it’s just a lot,” you fiddle with the box’s metal handle, “this is really good loot.”
his brows shoot up at this but coolly responds, “what can I say? I’m just a lucky guy.”
he’s bargaining with you, you know that– except he isn’t expecting anything in return
ace’s charismatic grin is contagious and soon a bashful smile dances on your lips
and you’re not sure if it’s the warmth of his touch or the persuasive drawl of his voice,, but you cling onto the medkit with earnest
-

leon s. kennedy
aka: rookie police officer
Tumblr media
“leon!”
the holler of his name causes his wide eyes to land on your crouched figure
naturally, you’re leaning into the side of the generator to pull at a bundle of wires and increase the probability of powering the exit gate
he treads forward before dropping to his knees to assist you in repairing the generator, “fancy seeing you here.”
and his voice is warm, welcoming, and everything that you adore about leon
his uniform is slightly covered with remnants of blood and dirt but otherwise he seems safe
“you scared me,” you sheepishly explained and gestured to the locker he just emerged from, “you need to tell us before you do that!”
your chiding is only for show, however, because the mutual infatuation you both share for each other is blatantly obvious
from lingering stares and giddy smiles, your fellow teammates are well informed of the potential relationship
which is why the third person that was helping you complete the generator stands up to leave
but not before giving you a discreet wink
and needless to say, the rookie cop comments about the strange behavior, “I– what was that about?”
he raises a brow but is immersed with guiding your fingers to the correct cluster of wires
responding with a quick shake of your head, you wager a glimpse at him when he abruptly digs in his belt pouch
“oh, before I forget,” leon opens his gloved hand to reveal a flashbang, “I got something for you.”
before you can sincerely thank him, he drags his hand up to scratch the back of his neck and murmurs, “in case you need it.”
and the sun’s sweltering rays only emphasize the tips of his reddened ears
“is this what you were crafting in the locker?”
you attempt– really, you do– to steady your voice but the gesture is just so overwhelmingly wholesome that your tone wavers
and your hands instinctively raise to cover your face before you add in muffles, “I’ll keep it then.”
he perks up at your declaration,, light-hued eyes glistening at the knowledge that you’ll hold onto his flash grenade
a soft grin dances on his lips, “okay.”
and there’s a comfortable silence that settles amongst you both
that is, until leon piques up, “you know, you’re kinda cute when you’re embarrassed. gimme your number when we make it out of the Trial?”

So for those unaware (which should be most) I actually run a ttrpg campaign set in Eorzea.
And one of my favourite things I did worldbuilding-wise was expanding on and detailing the role of men in Keeper of the Moon society.
Like yes, they're kicked out and expected to be nomadic, but in my campaign it's for a purpose. They have their own, distinct role in Keeper culture as couriers, lorekeepers, mystics, and genealogists.
Want to get a message to another tribe which may or may not be at a number of places in the woods? Tell a wandering man to do it and he will either know where they are, or give it to another man who will.
(My players dubbed this "Male Mail")
Each man is also expected to keep track of the children he has sired (they're not "his kids"), not out of any paternal duty, but simply to avoid any unexpected unpleasantness in the future.
As they are also fairly solitary, they often serve as capable guides and survivalists, and their isolated nature leads to them often having reputations as mystics with ties to strange magic and unexplained phenomena.

Bill x Frank: On Following
Bill is not a man anyone could reasonably consider a natural born ‘follower’. From early childhood he was always the odd man out in groups and games, the socially awkward kid with solitary hobbies and habits. He buried his secrets deep and let them make him peculiar and standoffish. He grew up to be the quasi-rude neighborhood weirdo with the big house and the shut-in mother, and when his mother died he became even more of a recluse.
Despite what many think about the ‘tin foil hat’ type that makes up the survivalist community, most members, from the amateur enthusiasts to the right wing nutcases, still do tend to be sociable in their own ways, and congregate in their own unique spaces. And yet, Bill bought his guns and studied bushcraft and pointedly avoided group retreats and attempts to recruit him to any cause or group. He avoided message boards and meetings and radicalization, and refused to listen to anyone besides himself.
And then the world ended and everyone went away and suddenly it wasn’t a question of leading or following or joining anything anymore. There was just Bill left, alone to count down the end times in peace.
For a long time there is no one. Then there is Frank.
Bill follows Frank. He has from the first. He had to literally capture the man in a boobytrap to get the drop on him, and even when Frank was stuck at the bottom of a hole with a gun pointed at him, Bill was the one playing catch up, frightfully off balance.
Bill takes Frank home for lunch, in part because he is befuddled by this unexpected event and in the cold light of day simply doesn’t know how to say no to something both he and this handsome stranger clearly want, no matter how ill-advised.
He cooks one of his favorite meals, and he tells himself he was going to make it for dinner anyway, that he isn’t doing this to impress anyone. And pairing rabbit with a Beaujolais is just common sense.
He serves Frank first… it’s only polite to serve the guest first, and himself after. It’s worth everything to see this stranger beam up at him like Bill had given him a plate full of rubies. If the Beaujolais is a mistake, a clue that Bill doesn’t want to obviously broadcast, he still can’t bring himself to regret it. Not when Frank sees, understands, and then appears to let it go so easily.
When lunch ends, Frank runs over to the piano and all Bill can do is trail behind, too stunned to get ahead of the man rummaging through the piano seat and exposing Bill’s secret… the big secret, the one that is NOT that he has Linda Ronstadt sheet music.
Frank asks about the girl. Bill tells him the truth, incapable of doing otherwise.
Frank says, “I know.” Of course he knows. He knew before lunch, before the song. He’s ahead of the curve again, seeing everything Bill has spent his life trying to hide.
Bill is the first upstairs, taking his shower at Frank’s behest, but when he comes out Frank is already naked in his bed, holding within him all the secret knowledge Bill doesn’t possess. He leads, Bill follows. Bill learns the secret chord.
Tumblr media
Frank stays. He is sunlight and flowers - bold and bright and warm. He careens through Bill’s life, dismantling and rebuilding it, and Bill watches it happen, and he doesn’t mind all that much.
They still argue, of course. They are two strong and in some ways diametrically opposed personalities.
When they argue, Frank has a tendency to storm out of whatever room they’re in, and sometimes even the house itself, as if the walls are too small to contain his emotions, all that lives inside of him. Where Bill’s first impulse is to retreat to his basement to process things slowly, Frank’s is to be outside, to let himself loose on the big expanse of sky.
And wherever Frank goes, what can Bill do but follow?
He finds himself having screaming matches in the street, and he supposes that makes Frank’s assertion true - their home isn’t just their house, it’s everything around them. And fighting or not, Bill’s home is wherever Frank is, indoors or out.
He chases after him, day after day, when Frank gets it into his head that they should start jogging.
It’s just another instance of Frank showing love - like repainting the house or fixing the shops - by paying attention to things. Noticing that Bill gets a bit winded on the stairs sometimes, that he’s a bit older, that he isn’t in the habit of denying himself meat and wine. Frank is taking care of Bill and his health.
Bill grumbles, and he’s sweaty and miserable, and there’s no way he can outpace Frank when they jog. But he follows Frank’s steady pace, wheezing, and watches the movement of Frank’s shoulders, those long, muscled legs carrying him forward… and his ass, of course.
He doesn’t mind being behind, following. Not if that’s the view. Not when following leads him to laughter and joy and kisses and strawberries.
He doesn’t mind at all.
Tumblr media
And he doesn’t mind following Frank later, either, when Frank can’t run anymore. He doesn’t mind when Frank slows down, when he gets sick, when he can barely feed or dress himself without help.
He walks behind the wheelchair, pushing his lover wherever he wants to go. He follows still, the steady hand and slow pace, always just a few steps away.
It’s a simple enough task to be Frank’s legs, and it’s a worthy role for Bill especially. Those legs carried Frank from Baltimore all the way to Bill’s front gate, and they wrapped themselves around Bill’s waist and taught him, and they ran bare and strong ahead of Bill in just one of many instances when Frank paid attention and loved and took care of him.
Those legs can rest now. Bill can take over now. It’s good to be able to do that. He knows it wears on Frank to not be able to run and fuck and express himself the way he used to, and his heart breaks for him. He isn’t truly surprised when Frank tells him it’s his last day. He knows what a difficult thing it is to carry this.
But Bill never considers it a burden to push his husband’s wheelchair. Not at all.
(He’s crying, but he almost wants to laugh when Frank tells him they’re going to get married, because only then does he realize that he has privately considered Frank his husband for over ten years now.)
He watches Frank swallow the wine laced with pills, and he considers that sometimes it’s a privilege, a gift to follow. For someone who spent his whole life going against the grain, right now doing exactly what Frank wants, echoing him in a perfect chorus, is the best thing ever.
“Old means we’re still here,” Frank said once, and while no one ever wishes to outlive their beloved, it’s not so bad being the one who follows when you are only ever half a heartbeat behind.
He waits until Frank has drained the last of the wine, waits until Frank commits them to this, waits for Frank to lead.
If he doesn't tell Frank what he is planning beforehand... well. Bill can be stubborn, too. And he was never going to let Frank go where he couldn't follow.
Frank sets down his glass and Bill picks up his own. He then carefully, calmly, drinks his own wine. As he does so he is nearly overcome with joy, knowing that his greatest fear will never come to pass.
He will not die before Frank. Neither of them will go through the rest of life, or death, alone.
Always half a step behind.
He doesn’t know if there is anything there afterwards for people when they die, a heaven or what have you.
But he knows, as he takes Frank to bed for the last time, that if there is anything after then Frank will most certainly be there, waiting patiently for Bill to catch up.

I desperately want somebody to write a reader insert fanfic where you and sniper go on a road trip through the desert for like 2 weeks and take psychedelics together. I would write it myself but I'm terrible at writing romance. (눈‸눈)
The first two days everything's very wholesome and nice, you get to bond with him through camping and he teaches you survivalist skills like hunting/trapping and you even get to try some target practice with his rifle. You connect emotionally as he tells you stories about his childhood playing out in the bush and hunting small animals and you share some memories from yours. For a man who is as emotionally distant and solitary as he is, your time with him is quite intimate and tender. The sun slowly begins to set on the third day as you sit next to him on the roof of his camper van for the view of the skyline. That's the moment when he, nervous but still calmly asks you if you want to take DMT with him. Every chance he gets to take off from mercenary work or the occasional poaching job, this is how he forces himself to relax and metaphorically uncork the bottle he stuffs all of his emotions into to get the job done. You ask him why he doesn't go to therapy like a normal person and he responds back in a deadpan expression that nothing about him or his career is normal and that this works for him just fine. You don't press the issue any further and agree to take it with him. He assures you that you'll be safe and all the weapons and whatever other dangerous objects he keeps in the van are locked away. Watching the desert night sky with Mundy is going to get a whole lot more interesting than you had expected.
I was so caught up in the idea I made a 7-Hour playlist on Spotify for it filled to the brim with road trip music and '70s goodies I think he'd listen to and whatnot. I have the playlist linked if anyone wants to listen to it and I also have more tf2 playlists made for my personal favorites. I've just been too embarrassed to post them without good reason. If you like them let me know!

Hiya! I notice you’ve played a lot of dnd rangers just like me! I wanted to ask what draws you towards the class? what do you enjoy about the class? And what do you think is the classes identity what makes a ranger ?
I’ve played swarmkeeper feywanderer horizon walker drakewarden and gloomstalker, I’m drawn towards the class in part because I’m a Ranger irl it’s my day job, but I also love the jack of all trades support vibe of the class it doesn’t excel anywhere but can help every class with a little bit of something and I view the classes identity as the professional adventurer someone who spends their life balancing the threats of the world whether that be the threats of the wild the monsters who inhabit it or the people who cross it, balancing their needs, kinda like Geralt of rivia balancing the needs of “monsters” and people, they work to make the world a safer better place picking up whatever skills and magic help them survive, I also note that every dnd class is either some form of Hunter or Tamer, the gloomstalker, horizon walker ,hunter and monster slayer, hunt the creatures of the wild, while the drakewarden, the swarmkeeper, the beast master and the fey wanderer spend their time befriending and taming the monsters of the wild. I don’t mean to answer my own question but I’m interested as someone who’s played the ranger just as much as me how your opinions may differ (I also especially love your borrower style ranger the little fellow is so cute and very well drawn)
Thanks for listening to my rambling and questions you can ignore this if it’s too much for whatever vibe you’re feeling rn have a lovely day !
hi!! Fun fact, i actually havent played any rangers 🥴 I'm the kinda dnd player who plays in like 2-3 campaigns but makes like 50 ocs. ASDFJKSDJF (I've only played a cleric and a barbarian in campaigns, but for oneshots I've tried every race) Id love to play one, but its kinda hard to do that for a oneshot since so much of the ranger class is dependent on favoured terrain/knowing your surroundings and levelling.
This is SUCH a fun ask because I LOVE the ranger class for its very niche yet versatile character archetype. I think if there's one type of word I could use to describe a ranger is a survivalist — the rangers that I do have, a handful of them are fashioned after Scouts/parkrangers (because....I was one.) or famous character types that do a lot of adventuring like cowboys, pirates, explorers etc. — if I'm being honest, ranger is the most 'adventurer' type there is!
(as a note here, i know pointy hat has mentioned a ranger's big thing was an animal companion -- i think?? IDR -- which is like a fun take. I really like his stuff, but i feel like a class shouldn't be bound to smth like a pet. any class can have pets!)
To use my own as an example, I have a bounty hunter devil cowboy (monster slayer), a princess-mononoke-ish Artemis huntress (hunter), a HouYi type ancient hero with 3-legged crows (swarmkeeper), an Indiana jones style explorerer (horizon walker) and a borrower (beast master). I really love the idea of all of them being really different but all being excellent survivalists and navigators!
Im a big fan of rangers that have fighting styles other than archery too. I think archery is awesome for the fighting style, but having duelist (like the borrower) or dueling (monster hunter) gives it an extra bit of flavour to just "class that wields a bow". it also sets them apart from a fighter bc in my head a fighter is more military while a ranger is more solitary. It establishes them as a martial class for sure, but its so versatile and has that edge that comes with dex-based instead of str-based.
I particularly like monster slayer bc to me that was very like...witcher-y. The cowboy is a monster slayer with favoured foes as humanoids bc he only tracks humanoids (bounties), which is some fun flavouring. There's a lot of customization! To clarify, there's a lot of room for flavour, but not as much choice for character builds (like, mechanically, at least compared to stuff like warlocks.)
The addition of magic also helps give it some class distinction :0
TLDR: mixes the best aspects of rogues and fighters with LOTS of room for flavour text.

Cassian, Andor, and Community
So I want to talk about a Cassian headcanon that I’ve been holding since the movie came out: the romantic, melancholy idea of the solitary spy, who walks alone except for his seven-foot-tall snarkmaster droid friend, until Jyn Erso comes along.
Which I’m starting to think is 100% wrong.
In the first three episodes of Andor, we’ve seen the two communities where he spent his childhood and young adulthood. We’ve also seen that Cassian is unquestionably a part of those communities, not someone standing outside them in lonely solitude.
On Kenari, it’s a tiny band of what seems to be mostly teens and children, living in the forest on a lakeshore. This is a situation where there’s no such thing as a solitary survivalist. You have to depend on each other to survive. Yes, Kassa stops to look at the pit mine where, presumably, his parents and all the other adults died in the mining disaster. Yes, he stays behind to explore the downed ship. So you could go “okay, this is little Kassa striking out on his own as he always will.”
However, if you wind back a little, he doesn’t go off on his own to investigate the downed ship, but instead worms his way into the circle of bigger kids setting off, saying “me too, I’m here too, I’m old enough.” He is trying to establish himself as one of the group that explores when there are older, stronger kids hanging back. And when one of the oldest boys tries to stop him, he waits until the girl in charge steps in for him.
Even while he’s pushing to create a place for himself, he understands clearly how his little society works, who’s in charge, who says go and who says stay. He knows this isn’t his call, not in the place he currently occupies in their power structure.
And he also has a little sister that he takes care of and stops to reassure even as he’s rushing off to join the bigger kids. He isn’t a solitary kid. He’s connected to this community.
Let’s move to Ferrix.
This is a bigger but no less insular community, and he is no longer an skinny boy but a young man firmly rooted among his peers. He knows everybody and has for the past eleven years, and they know him. He knows that Brasso will back him up on the ridiculous, overly-convoluted lie he spins, knows it so well that he doesn’t say, “what if you say this” or “tell them this.” In a piece of glorious writing, he tells the lie as Brasso is going to say it.
When Nurchi tries to intimidate him, he knows exactly the buttons to push (”Vetch? Are you that hard up for money you’re working for this guy?”) to slide out of it without more than an exasperated look from Nurchi. He knows what to say to charm the guard at the shipyard, who is also exasperated (”this is the last time, I mean it”) but how many times has there been a “last time” before?
He knows Bix is like 99% done with his nonsense but there’s still that one percent that means she might be able to find him a buyer. (Of course, he doesn’t seem to know or care that Bix has Rebellion contacts, may even be a Rebel herself, but that’s a meta for another time.)
Again, he understands how the people around him work, and he’s shifted from finding his own place in that structure to using his established place as a base from which lever others.
“But mosy,” you say, “what about the movie? Surely the Cassian we see in the movie is a lonely, lonely spy who trusts and depends on nobody but himself and also his seven-foot-tall snarkmaster droid friend?”
The movie, right, the movie.
I could talk about Tivik, or Jedha, or Draven, and how all those moments and scenes depend on relationships with others. But actually I want to talk about the moment in the Yavin hangar when he turns up with enough manpower to run a mission to Scarif.
Jyn was coming out of the Council meeting, which Cassian either skipped altogether or ducked out of. Allowing for as much arguing back and forth as Jyn probably could have stood for, let’s say a couple of hours.
In that time, Cassian was able to gather up a squad of people who not only have the skills that Jyn needs for the mission to Scarif, but also are of the mindset that would take on a unsanctioned rogue almost-certainly suicide mission. It’s a big base, and it’s not like Cassian could have sent out a space email blast. He had to find all these people quickly and quietly.
Which means he had them in mind already. He knew who was getting frustrated with the Council’s inaction, he knew who had the skills they needed, he knew who would agree to this.
Sure, maybe a few of them tapped a friend. Could be some of them were listening in on the disastrous Council meeting. But most of them came on board because Cassian asked. Because it was Cassian doing the asking.
He’s part of this community too, the community of the Rebellion and of the particularly dirty-handed section of assassins, saboteurs, and spies that he gathers up and presents to Jyn as her squad. And once again, for the last time, he used his place within that community to get what he needed.
Now. This is all based on the movie and on the first three episodes of the show. The rest of this season and next could render all this so much hot air on the internet. But . . .
Don’t you want to be part of something?
Cassian Andor does, and he is.

Barn Anon. Oh, that one wasn’t from me xD.
I can’t say I’ve much experience with a pack of them but I’m aware that solitary Space Wolves make great family members once “domesticated” and “house trained”. If you give them a place to stay they’ll be more receptive to listening to you but BUT you must set firm boundaries! For now, do they know to at least not temper with fences? You can set up some fencing around your flowerbed for now and work from there.
Remember to be firm but not harsh with them, they’re a bit more wild than other Space Marines but their loyalty to those they deem a pack member is one that lasts a life time. While they won’t totally lose that somewhat untamed edge completely, you’ll be surprised at how well they can adapt to living with a human.
Before I forget, congrats Survivalist College Anon!
I had to make sure it wasn't you
But this is also good advice!

1. establish familiar apocalypse trope: doomsday prepp- I mean “survivalist,” deathtraps, rugged capable manliness, solitary, hates humanity
2. guy falls into a non-lethal trap and you are highly suspicious of him, despite allowing him to eat some food with you
3. you are both gay and this deconstructs the genre
4. you live a beautiful, satisfying life together, made possible by the dissolution of society, and notably outside of the violent militaristic environments built instead in the shaky new world order. you cherish beauty and art and one another and strawberries and you do not die until you are both old and on your own terms

Warhammer 2022 - My favourite miniatures from this year.
Tumblr media
Warhammer Community is once again asking us our favourite miniatures of the year. And while I’ve made my vote, I thought it would be nice to post my favourite 10 releases of this year. And unlike the voting list that Games Workshop has given us, I’m also going to include releases from Forge World.
10. - Brôkhyr Thunderkyn:
Tumblr media
The Leagues of Votann have been the most exciting revelation that Games Workshop has brought back from the dead. An abhuman society that retains some of the knowledge lost during the Dark Age of Technology, and living proof that humanity can survive without the Imperium.
Thunderkyn are those particular Votann engineers who head off into battle, armoured in repurposed void-rigs and carrying a variety of heavy weaponry; from heavy bolters to high-grade energy beams. The Imperium would definitely sacrifice a dozen worlds just to gain access to their gear.
While I really liked some of the Votann releases, and some others kind of missed the mark, the Brôkhyr are how I want to see the Leagues move forward; Cool advanced gear mixed with a heavy-industrial aesthetic. The goggles really make them so much cooler.
9. - Aeldari Rangers:
Tumblr media
2022 finally saw the Eldar gain a heap of renewed kits, and almost all of them were a great update to... Truly ... ANCIENT... kits. While the new Guardians were very nice, the Rangers are one of my favourite units in the lore.
Eldar Snipers who live solitary lives away from their Craftworld. Rangers follow the Path of the Outcast, choosing a life of excitement and adventure. A dangerous life that can result in their worst nightmare; falling into the clutches of She Who Thirsts. Rangers are expert survivalists and amazing Marksmen.
The Ranger design is one of my favourite, with only the Shadow Spectres and Warp Spiders surpassing it. I love their cameleoline cloaks, especially when it covers their helmets. They encompass some of my favourite aspects of Elven aesthetics; mysterious, ethereal, and somewhat spooky. The “Aspect-Totem” to Kurnous is a detail that I’m glad they’re continuing from previous units.
8. - Boa Kon’ssstriktr:
Tumblr media
This is something unheard of... a Snakeman from Lustria. Boa learned his skills from watching matches from high up in trees and eventually decided to participate himself. He is a very conniving player that also has a very special ability; he can hypnotise his adversaries.
Boa’s origins is an enigma, for Snakemen were something only heard of in the chaos-infested jungles of Khuresh. So might this be a Lizardman blessed by the Serpent-god Sotek, or perhaps a rare case of a non-chaos corrupted Naga?
The most interesting design for Blood Bowl this year. Fans have been speculating about Khuresh for decades now, and this little nod to the Naga from the earliest editions of Warhammer Fantasy is a welcome sight. Boa’s design offers so much. Not only is it a wonderful Star Player for Lizardmen and Amazons, it is also going to be a great conversion for almost every setting.
7. - Legion MKVI Tactical Squad:
Tumblr media
No Warhammer list would be complete without the Space Marines making an appearance. The new Horus Heresy Plastic kit was probably the most anticipated release this year.
The Mark 6 “Corvus” pattern power armour is the iconic design from the early days of Rogue Trader, and during the Siege of Terra, it was the most used pattern by both loyalist and traitor forces. It is the lightest pattern of power armour to date, and favoured by the legions and chapters that preferred covert and stealth warfare.
I wasn’t expecting myself to like this unit. My favourite pattern of Power armour is Mark 5; Heresy Armour. It has the most “grim-looking” helmet design of all the patterns, while also looking haggard and worn out. I prefer my space marines grimy and battle-scarred. This unit however keeps some of my favourite design cues. I love the metal bonding studs on the Shoulder pads, and the new scaling of the miniatures is way better compared to their squatter predecessors. I hope Games Workshop re-releases the other patterns with the new proportions.
6. - Vartijan Exo-Driller:
Tumblr media
What do you mean, Space Dwarves get two aesthetics? The Squats of Necromunda are little different compared to their core-ward kin. Instead of void suits and grav-trikes, the Necromundan Squats battle with mining gear and twin-linked weapons.
The Vartijan Exo-Driller is a piece of heavy gear utilized by the Squats to protect themselves from hazardous environments while mining. Of course, a massive suit that makes you the same height as an Ogryn, is also a perfect battle-mech to fight rival gangs.
While the Prospector gang is a great kit in and of itself, the Exo-driller was what everyone wanted. It keeps the egg-ish shape of the original Squat Exo-armour, and turns it into a beast of a mech. This is probably the model that will people go spend money on Forge World Minis.
5. - The Avatar of Khaine:
Tumblr media
The most deserving of winning the Best Miniature of the Year is most definitely this monster of a sculpt.
When the God Khaine was shattered in a thousand pieces, his essence was scattered to the hearts within many of the Craftworlds across the galaxy. A Wraith Artefact was formed wherever these shards landed. When the Craftworlds go to battle, one Exarch is chosen to sacrifice themselves to awaken this Artefact and make Khaine walk reality again; to destroy the enemies of the Aeldari.
Another wonderful glow-up for the Aeldari; What can I say? It is an absolutely stunning miniature and actually made me start looking more into Eldar lore. What I like the most about this miniature is the options the kit has. Three choices of heads, including a bare headed option with luscious hair, and three choices of forms for his weapon; the Wailing Doom. My favourite form is the axe; a weapon more Eldar should carry.
4. - Cadian Shock Troopers:
Tumblr media
Another one I wasn’t expecting to like as much as I did. Cadians have returned to the field and look better than ever.
The Cadian Shock Troopers are considered the best of the best. Trained from childhood to battle the enemies of the Imperium and hold the line. Even after the destruction of their home, their resolve remains unfaltering, and their Mantra “Cadia Stands!” is still proudly confessed by their ranks. With no planet to recruit from, Cadians now allow recruits from other worlds, as long as they endure their harsh training regiments. Still, with every campaign and every battle, the people of Cadia are slowly going extinct, but as long as a single member of them stands to fight, their culture and their world will survive.
The update that the Guard deserved, and I was really impressed with just how lovely they look. Better proportions, new gear and an updated look. Their design looks way more like “Normandy Landing American Soldiers, than their previous iteration did, and it really works wonderfully.
The only thing unaccounted for is gear that currently is lacking in the available kit. We’ve seen images, so they might be available in a Kill Team Box, or are just lacking to save on space in the Starter box.
3. - Ash Waste Nomads War Party:
Tumblr media
I have been waiting for these to return since Necromunda got released and I actually have a kit of them.
The Nomads of Necromunda’s Ash Waste are a mysterious people that have existed on the planet since the vile Imperium claimed it as their own. Conducting lightning raids on trespassing gangs and convoys, they are one of the most dangerous thing to encounter in the toxic wastes of Necromunda.
Ash Waste Nomads are the closest you can get to a playable “good” rebel faction, outside of the Ogryn gangs. They are outlaws to the Imperium, and only have hate and malice to give to the Imperial House. This gang is a look at what non-chaos resistance forces can look like.
Such a cool concept that I hope is going to be expanded upon. The Nomads are awesome. It emphasizes everything I love in character design; long coats, gas masks, hoods, and a rugged appearance. I also believe this kit would work wonderfully as awesome conversions. I can already imagine conversions for a variety of guard regiments, including Death Korps and Tallarn Desert Raiders.
2. - Imperial Navy Breacher Squad:
Tumblr media
Kill Team really kept on giving this year, from the Eldar Corsairs and Traitor Guard, to the Kroot and Kasrkin. However, my favourite Kill Team this year is the Imperial Navy.
The Imperial Navy employs a dedicated force of armed infantry to act as security personnel and defend their vessels from enemy boarders; The Voidsmen-at-Arms. Breacher Squads however, take the fight to the enemy. They are the elite branch of the Voidsmen and are deployed in boarding actions against enemy vessels. This also includes Space Hulks, and the Breachers are often the first soldiers to explore the outskirts of these massive shipwrecks.
These are my Space Marines. It is another look into a part of the lore that Kill Team has allowed for us to dive a little bit deeper in. Once again, this kit, like the other Kill Teams, has so much character to it, from the Armsman with a Breaching shield, to the one wearing a bombing vest. I do have some gripes though, mainly that the Axe-wielder carries an axe instead of the weird looking Pole-arm/ Boarding-hook that a lot of their artwork includes. I also wished that the helmets were a little bit more varied, instead of the plethora of bare heads this kit has (which is very weird for a unit that mostly deals with space-combat).
1. - Grinkrak’s Looncourt:
Tumblr media
Of course my top-pick this year was something related to the Greenskins.
Grinkrak is a Loonboss that has gaslighted the rabble of Grots he has rule over, into thinking that they are a powerful group of noble knights instead of the ragtag team of cowardly Gobbos. Of course, a steady dose of fungal tinctures has helped him maintain that illusion. They live in the Gnarlwood, at the grand fungal monument known as the Great Stinkhorn. So far, the noble quests they have undertaken have been surprisingly successful, even though the Gnarlwood literally eats bigger opponents than them for breakfast.
The Gloomspite Gits are some of the most fun armies that Games Workshop has made. Even though this is the second Gloomspite warband for Warhammer: Underworlds, they are still such a creative bunch of fun characters. While I’ve noticed the two small Squigs are basically rescaled models from the Squig Herd set, everything else is just great.
I realised that the Gloomspite were given design notes that the Black Orcs originally had in Warhammer Fantasy; Fully armoured Orcs and Goblins with leering faces and the cool looking Iron Jaw. The New AoS Orruks lack this, which I find sad. I love Orcs in Fantasy, but Grots in AoS are way more superior to their Orruk kin.
______________________________________________________________
Yeah... a lot of love was given this year to a bunch of different things and I must say that I really liked the releases this year. The Votann were exciting, Necromunda brought us to the Wastes and the Aeldari finally were given the attention they deserved. I’m also glad that we still have so much in store next year, especially for the smaller gaming systems like Warcry and Kill Team.
Enjoy your holidays, peoples!!!

If your ocs all had to fight battle royale style who would be the ultimate victor?
oh man, this is a tough one. i think it would boil down to two of them: kali and machairodonis
it would be easy to think that kali, being the biggest and tallest, would have a field day with the others, but i think there’s more to it than just busted ass stats.
see, kali may be fuckoff gigantic, but her special ability list isn’t really geared toward combat. she’s not a fighter build; she’s a survivalist build. her unique cheek teeth are designed for filter-feeding krill out of the water, but are not useful as weapons in combat. her claws are thin and small, so her paw swipes only do blunt force damage (make no mistake though, this will still absolutely kill pretty much anything smaller than her). she’s also an ambush predator that relies heavily on the stealth and mobility bonuses she gains when in deep water. on land, she’s significantly slower and more awkward. most notably though, she doesn’t really fight all that often. kali is solitary and rarely interacts with other sapient species, much less throws down with them. so, while she is hands down the most powerful and most well defended character in my roster and certainly can fight, she’s at a significant experience disadvantage compared to some of my career fighters. that being said though, her thick subcutaneous fat means that she has near unparalleled defense, and it is very difficult to land a crit on her.
that’s where my boy mach comes in. machairodonis as an adult is the second largest of the lineup, with thick bones and a tanky, powerful frame. he’s a career wrestler and a very experienced fighter, with the speed and reflexes of a cat and the pure brute physicality of a grizzly bear rolled up into one. this alone means he’d give kali a run for her money, but he also has a very powerful signature ability that’s unique to his species: razor teeth. the positioning, size, and serrated edges of mach’s front teeth allow for a ‘cookie cutter’ effect that does absolutely brutal damage even without a crit. if he does land a crit, it inflicts an automatic heavy bleed status effect, draining the opponent’s hp over several minutes. depending on where he lands the bite, this accumulation of damage could be enough to catch him the w by just waiting until the opponent succumbs to blood loss or shock. and with his saber canines, he likely has a high enough base damage output to get theough kali’s thick skin and fat. his forelimbs are also highly flexible in comparison to other sabercats’, granting him a bonus to all grappling attacks.
they both have the ability to one shot each other, but kali can do it from a longer distance. mach has to get past her crippling paw strikes to secure a grapple and land a solid bite on her in order to crit, and likely he would then have to retreat to safety and defend until kali succumbed to the bleed damage. there’s also the very real possibility of him being bitten and shaken out of his skin on his way out. ultimately it would boil down to who could control the range; kali would try her best to keep the fight long and swing at mach with her paws, aiming for his head and spine, while mach would look for an opportunity to tackle and land a bite in a critical area like her neck.
honorable mentions include kairoh and megnatereon, who are undoubtably the most skilled combatants but their small size and relatively low defense makes fighting against mach or kali unfeasible. kairoh is the most experienced fighter out of all of them, and only a bit smaller than mach, but her less specialized teeth do less damage and her lankier frame means she’s more susceptible to blunt force. megantereon is the most versatile, with incredibly high crit damage from his gigantic saberteeth. he’s highly mobile both on land and in the trees, and his athleticism (plus impressive stealth) makes him difficult to hit. however, he’s diminutive compared to the rest of them, meaning he’d have to do a no-hit run on every single opponent in order to not get completely wasted.
Tumblr media
here’s a rough size comparison. from heaviest to lightest: kali (1,375lbs), machairodonis (880lbs), kairoh (765lbs), megantereon (400lbs)
