Song of Orpheus secret

Thanks to a Twitter post from Neil Gaiman I now know a secret.   If you have the original printing of The Sandman Special: Song of Orpheus the cover glows in the dark.  No one at DC Marketing told anyone about this so no one knew about this feature.  There are fans who had this story for decades and never knew the cover glows in the dark.

Song of Orpheus!

Loved this. It's a quite, somber episode-- perfect follow-up to the high-racketing tension of the previous three. And Father gets his focus (and Jacob Wells -warms my heart knowing what's coming in S3, though not from the best of circumstances.)

Edie~ (treasuring her moments) and Joe (he's growing on me) and Margaret (LOVED her-- this show picks the best supporting cast/actors) and the villain (forgot his name but he was stupendously played) AND the policemen (there for a short scene but they sold it.)

A beginning and an end and nothing in-between... but they had seven happy days.

Catherine and Father's prison scene beautifully illustrates her tact: with the wolf whistling prisoners, the guards, and Father's dignity. And Father assuring her he doesn't distrust her but the justice system is solid character writing.

Love this episode-- but what else is new? ;)))

It's one of my favorite S1 episodes, too. Father's cynicism and distrust of the world Above makes more sense now, doesn't it? Glad you're enjoying what you've seen so far. 😊

Sandman by Ed Sheeran is a whole freaking level. I have the idea that Morpheus would cry while hearing it cause it would remind him of Orpheus, since it says "honeybees and birds sing your song".

You know how wrecked I will be when we see this in S2? No, I’m already wrecked because we already got a glimpse of it

And the worst, for me, is that they shot these scenes on a beach instead of on a set that is the Dreaming. Because, apart from practical considerations (production costs/CGI etc), how much more wrecking (I know, it's the word in this context) is it to (hopefully) have those scenes mirrored, and both of them walking away from each other in what will visually look so alike?

Sidenote: Can we have the buckled boots please?

Also, and it always pains me to say this: I wish someone else than Bryan Talbot would have done the art for this, although a lot of why it grates on me also has to do with the inking. But if I wasn’t so in love with the story, the art would have nearly destroyed this one for me (need I mention Calliope? 🙈).

Another one for the art log — Orpheus study ✨!!

I had this idea of the light breaking the body in two parts so that the head would be one color and the body another different one — a bit like visual foreshadowing of Orpheus’s fate!

But so far I haven’t been able to make it look exactly as I want it to be! I’ll have to come back to this when I have more time to rethink and change it accordingly.
