mmm something something about how in both these situations, the person holding the gun thinks the best chance at saving humanity is to kill the little girl in joel's arms - sarah's broken ankle was mistaken for an infection, ellie's brain possibly holds the key to a cure. sarah dies for nothing. ellie would've died for nothing, regardless if the cure worked or not. joel never gave a single shit about curing humanity, there was no choice here for him. he already lost a daughter by people who thought they knew what was best for the world, he wouldn't lose another one the same way

　　gen can't remember much of the time in between getting the call and him speaking. there was speeding through at least one red light, yelling and crying in the lobby, she might've collapsed somewhere in the middle of that, and then a long too long wait. when they'd finally let her back into his room, gen had nearly ran, only slowing when she got closer, suddenly terrified and not quite sure of how to react. they hadn't thought they'd get this close and they've never been good at this, facing mortality, seeing people she loves in a situation they can't get them out of.

　　it had taken her a solid minute before she'd gone into his room, they won't tell him that, they won't tell him about the screaming and the panic attack or the fact that she'd been thinking about every wrong thing that could have happened. that they blame themself . he doesn't know it could be true, they're remembering enough that the signs point to it.

　　the remembering is always the hardest part, not the telling, but the sudden rush of memories and the realization that this isn't the first time. none of it is. it's all some little game for bored and pissed gods and goddesses and it's her fault. it's on them and they know they can't tell him everything yet, not when he just almost fucking died. it has to wait and that's the even harder part. knowing and not being able to tell him for this that and the other reason. 

　　they've been crying again, wondering when the tears will just stop coming because she's run out of them, half hiding her face in folded arms on top of her knees. the hospital's chairs are shit and they hurt but gen doesn't care, won't complain, it's just an annoying little thing on top of it all. her eyes have stayed glued to him for hours and they've barely blinked, just waiting for him to show some sign that he's still there. that he hasn't fully left. it isn't time. not yet. it doesn't go like that and it's the waiting that kills them every time. 

　　she remembers all of those other waiting periods and they feel like they're suffocating on all of the memories. the guilt and the panic and the urge to run so he won't have to see all of it painted on her face. they did this it's her fault she's going to keep getting him half killed.

　　if you die it's going to be my fault, they don't know if he's able to hear them, doesn't really factor it in, it just comes out as she starts to spiral and fall back into memories in the silence and the beeping of machines. her eyes are distracted, distant, and they almost don't see his hand but they catch it in the corner of their focus and they almost yell . 

　　they want to get closer but they're scared, worried he's going to remember before them this time, know that it is her fault. all they can do is whisper a choked up "hey, shh, i know it hurts i know just don't talk okay, it's okay, i'm here and i won't go anywhere." , only moving closer so they can reach out and take his hand gently. 

　　gen puts all of her remaining energy into him, steadily, trying to get his pain to dissolve as much as possible. "hey, buck, you're gonna be okay you're not dead you're gonna be okay. i'm here, i love you, it's okay you're gonna get out of here. i'll be here until you do and after. just squeeze my hand, don't talk please save your strength, like please babe, please. "

　　she isn't going to run, she'll stay and stay and stay and help and maybe this time it means they'll really finally get out. they still don't know how it all works or why zeus won't fucking chill but they can't think about all of the extra bullshit. not yet. it will have to wait.

　　"i'll tell you everythin' when you get a lil more rest. do you need meds or the nurse or some water? just ––– don't fuckin' do that again or i swear i'm gonna kill you myself."

PSA: i keep seeing posts about staying cool in extreme heat that include advice like "gatorade is bad actually!" and "don't drink fruit juice it'll just dehydrate you!" and neither of these are true!

regarding fruit juice: there's apparently a misconception that Any Sugar At All will dehydrate you, and that's simply not true. yes, sugar will make you pee more when consumed in large amounts, but 1) the natural sugar in fruits won't do this to you 2) great news! a lot of fruit juices exist without any added sugar in them! 3) honestly even having a glass of the fruit juice with added sugar won't completely dehydrate you as long as you're also drinking water throughout the day. if its hot you deserve a cold treat of a drink!!! can't go wrong with fruit juice!!!

regarding gatorade: maybe this isn't an every day drink, but guess what: if it's 110F/40C or hotter outside, and you don't have AC, or you're moving around a lot outside of the AC, and you're sweating buckets: that's when you drink a gatorade.

gatorade exists to replenish all the electrolytes (salt) and glucose (sugar) that you sweat out. YES it is meant for athletes to drink during intensive work outs and not necessarily for people who aren't doing that kind of exercise. BUT GUESS WHAT! when you're sweating buckets because you had to walk to the bus in extreme heat, that's intensive exercise. please feel free to drink a gatorade after that! that's its intended use case!!!!

no: neither of these drinks should be a total replacement for water. but drinking a lot of water and then treating yourself to a fruit juice with lunch is a good idea!!! drinking a gatorade becuase you just had to walk for 20 minutes in the heat is a good idea!!!

Please Stop Spreading Misinformation About Drinks!!! It's fine if you drink things that aren't water!!!! Yes you should probably always be drinking water but drinking something else As Well isn't going to hurt you!!!! okay!!!! its fine!!!!!!

Ghost Kitchen (brought to you by criminal entrepreneur, Red Hood)

Danny’s got the easiest job in Gotham.

He works as a fry cook at a shoddily-run, independent burger joint. Hardly anyone comes in, despite prices being criminally low, and portions insanely large, and while the manager looks like the average tough-as-nails ex-con, he lets Danny mess around in the kitchen whenever the place is empty. (Which is often. This place has to be the city’s hidden gem or something!)

Mr. Manager’s the only one ever there with Danny, except for sometimes when his buddies come over to smoke and play cards. Danny would find it shady, except part of his job is not to ask questions. Literally, he was told during the interview.

(It was a weird interview. Why would they need to hire someone who’s been in a gunfight before? Like, he has, but Gotham’s idea of “hirable qualities” is so bizarre.)

So instead he whips up some killer burgers with the frozen ingredients, and basks in the praise as the guys tell him he shouldn’t have, he does too much for this joint, ain’t that friendly!

Now, Danny’s a chef on the newer side. As a teen he’d preferred the look of Nasty Burger over anything with Michelin stars, and he only really took up cooking after Jazz moved out for college. But just like ecto-exposure used to turn the groceries sentient, Danny’s low-level ecto signature imbues all his food with something historically haunted Gothamites just love! And Danny’s never been one to half-ass a job when it makes people happy.

With fresher produce, real meat, Danny’s sure he can take his dishes to the next level. It takes a couple months of badgering, but his manager finally agrees to contact the mysterious store owner, who keeps the place going, despite profits Danny knows have to be in the red.

Danny spends the morning prepping. He pours his heart into his food, eager to impress. The big boss will be here soon, and he wants to prove that despite the dangerous location, this place has real potential!

It isn’t until the Red Hood shows up that Danny realizes he’s been working for a money laundering scheme.
