Into, Across and Beyond! Scripting: Another Sonic?

At the beginning of One More Hero's first proper chapter, the other Sonic Tails had found wearily woke up tied up to a pretty unique punching bag in the lab.

Sonic?: What the...? A Tails zapped me... with just his hands?

He saw the Tails of the world he was in.

CR!Sonic: You're like me!

OMT!Tails: Why do you look like Sonic?!

Sonic?: Because I am Sonic!

OMT!Tails: Then why aren't you dead? Why are your eyes green? Why are you taller? And why is your body, erm… in a slightly different shape?

Sonic? (unamused): Pretty sure you just called me fat.

OMT!Tails: W-What? No I'm not! Are you one of Eggman's clones?

Sonic?: No.

OMT!Tails: Are you a well-done robot?

Sonic?: Please stop it.

OMT!Tails: How about an illusion? (to himself) Can't believe I just said that...

Sonic?: Not even close.

Tails thought a little more about it, coming to a better conclusion.

OMT!Tails: Are you from another dimension? Where things are like the same as this universe but different? And you’re Sonic in that universe? But somehow travelled through to this universe, and you don't know how?

Sonic?: U-Uhhhh, wow. That was a pretty lucky… guess.

OMT!Tails: I learned about it in my open week at my new school.

Sonic?: Quantum physics, right? I’m from the, erm, “Crossover Realm”, you could say.

OMT!Tails: This is amazing! You can finally teach me to become a better hero, just like my Sonic told me to be!

He hopped a bit on the spot in excitement.

CR!Sonic: Yeah, then he died. I’m familiar with that sorta thing. (to himself) Godspeed, Plusverse Sonic…

OMT!Tails simply sighed.

OMT!Tails: Look... I made a promise to him.

CR!Sonic: Alright. Here’s lesson number 1, Tails. Don’t watch the mouth…

He revealed himself to be free of the ropes.

CR!Sonic: Watch the hands.

Sonic kicked the punching bag, causing Tails to get tossed against the wall unharmed and without getting hurt as Sonic went out the window.

OMT!Tails: Where are you going?

CR!Sonic: My guess, me being here is Eggman’s doing, and finding him will help me get back home.

CR!Sonic was about to run off, moments before glitching out and tumbling to the floor.

OMT!Tails: Sonic?!

Tails jumped out the window to where CR!Sonic was.

OMT!Tails: A-Are you alright?

CR!Sonic: No, I’m not!

He got back up.

CR!Sonic: Phew. Okay, seems like my body isn't really fresh with being stranded in the wrong dimension.

OMT!Tails: L-Look, I know this is all strange to you, but you've gotta trust me.

CR!Sonic: Listen, Tails. I don’t have time to become a mentor to an alternate version of my little buddy who has a version of me that’s dead! I have a lot going on in my life right now. Like, a LOT!

OMT!Tails: I g-get that, I really do.

CR!Sonic: Uh-huh, sure you do. Now, Tails, before I got here, did you see some kind of strange crystal Egghead’s been looking for for a while now?

OMT!Tails: The Paradox Prism? Kind of.

CR!Sonic: Goodbye!

Sonic raced off with Tails in pursuit.

OMT!Tails: Hey, wait! You didn't even let me give directions!

CR!Sonic: With the Prism, I can just touch it, get sucked in, find MY dimension, and get back to my life!

OMT!Tails: Ahem! It’s not that simple!

CR!Sonic: And why is that?

OMT!Tails: Rarely anyone even knows what that crystal's capable of. Dunno why it settled in this dimension in particular, either.

CR!Sonic: Oh, and what’s gonna happen? I’m gonna get caught by some council? Hilarious. Now, time to pay the doctor a visit!

CR!Sonic raced away.

OMT!Tails: Council? What’s that all about? Gah! Focus, Tails.

OMT!Tails followed him to one of Green Hill's caves, where the Prism was at, albeit partially damaged.

CR!Sonic: Aaaand… Oh, so THAT’S how I got here! You’ve got to be kidding me!

OMT!Tails: It’s already damaged?! Rats…

CR!Sonic looked back at Tails for a moment.

CR!Sonic: … You’re still a techno-nerd, right?

OMT!Tails: Yeah? Why?

He gave Tails the remains of the Prism.

CR!Sonic: Let's get to work! ‘Cause we're going to a Shatterspace!

OMT!Tails: Wha-? Hey, wait!

Upon returning to Tails’s workshop, the little kitsune had questions in his mind about the Shatterspace. Sonic, on the other hand, was eager to get this show on the road.

OMT!Tails: Right now, I have so many questions. What are we planning to do with this? And what's a ‘Shatterspace’?

CR!Sonic: Places where other worlds like ours are at. Interestingly enough, I ended up in one such Shatterspace where a Sonic existed, like yours, and if I'm lucky, there might as well be other mes out there now, alive or not.

OMT!Tails: There's other universes out there? Woah…

Tails was in awe, while CR!Sonic simply smirked.

CR!Sonic: No, not ‘whoa’! You seriously wanna check out a dimension where Eggy's got a friggin Council ripping off New York City?

OMT!Tails: Sounds like we've got a new adventure on our hands!

CR!Sonic: Don't expect it to last long. Though, depending on how long it'll take for me to find home, it may as well last long… but we've got no time to waste! I need you to build us a ship to get there!

Knuckles could be heard outside, hearing something going on in the workshop.

OMT!Knuckles: What’s going on in there?

OMT!Tails: Huh? Knux is outside!

CR!Sonic: Uh oh!

OMT!Tails: I'll keep him out of the loop as best as possible. In the meantime, focus on getting that ready.

CR!Sonic: Got it!

Sonic went to hide as Tails opened the door to his workshop.

OMT!Knuckles: Hey, Tails!

OMT!Tails: Oh! Hey, Knuckles!

OMT!Knuckles: How are you feeling today?

OMT!Tails: Well, a bit better than yesterday, at least.

OMT!Knuckles: That's good to hear. Sally was just asking after you.

OMT!Tails: Right. I really do want to be around her more, but, erm...

OMT!Knuckles: Some world-saving business you gotta do?

OMT!Tails: Yeah, that's it. Got some temporary dimension-travelling to do, and then I'll be back.

OMT!Knuckles: That's fine, little dude. Just stay safe out there, alright?

OMT!Tails: Will do! I'll call you if there's anything I need help with.

OMT!Knuckles: Well, see you later!

He gave Tails an affectionate head-rub before he headed off.

CR!Sonic: Is he gone?

OMT!Tails: Yeah.

CR!Sonic: Well, better get started on building that machine to get us to the Shatterverse.

OMT!Tails: Right!

The two got started, and were soon done preparing a special aircraft for Shatterverse travel, with the Paradox Prism fragment powering it.

OMT!Tails: Phew! All done. This is more complicated than I thought.

CR!Sonic: Alright, let’s get this show on the road!

The pair got the aircraft started up for their travels.

OMT!Tails: Do you know how to work this?

CR!Sonic: Long story.

OMT!Tails: Likely we're gonna need something to travel through this "Shatterverse" safely.

CR!Sonic: We'll figure it out as we go. Now, let's do it to it!

A portal opened up to let them through, and off they went!

Frontiers writing really does feel like "okay let's grab what people love talking about online" mixed with hazy memories of what happened in past games without anyone bothering to, you know. ACTUALLY look at what happened in them.

And then a lot of new stuff being added that then, isn't expanded.

Yup. It's dangling keys in front of my face when I know exactly what those keys go to, and it's not what you're telling me. Like I'm not an encyclopedia and I've got an awful memory, but even I know off the top of my head that Eggman didn't stop Neo Metal in Heroes. Considering how much Flynn loves that storyline I'm honestly surprised he got this wrong.

The cutscenes in general are quite shoddy and miss a valuable piece of writing advice: be careful about including normal conversations.

True, people DO talk this way, but the reason we don't write about it and instead condense it to a "they chatted about the weather for a few minutes" is because it's boring.

I feel like I should give the side stories more slack since they're optional, but they're really so meaningless. Well, they're SUPPOSED to mean something, they're meant to build up this mystery, but just asking mundane questions about random stuff isn't really what I'd call "building a mystery." It's just characters speculating about tiny little details surrounding the ancient culture that doesn't loop back into the overall mystery. They're not good foreshadowing and add nothing of value, not even entertainment. They're all so impersonal since they don't even use these little scenes to show how well the characters bounce off each other.

If you want an example of this done well, there's TONS of optional discussions in Xenoblade 3 where the gang just talk about regular stuff, but it's so funny because they don't know what the hell they're talking about. There's one where Sena accidentally invents zoos, it's great and I'm mad no one has compiled them on YouTube yet Of course, there's also stuff to expand on the lore and world building, but they're mostly reserved for everyday antics that highlight the excellent dynamics these characters have.

And that's what makes them good. It's not just "Everyday conversation #16" because it gives the characters a chance to make something a little more personal to them.

Frontiers misses that mark by because it needs these characters to be informational mouthpieces to move the plot and that destroys the concept of character voice.

Tails uses big words to signal that he's the smart one when his actions spoke well enough for him before. Eggman is literally just sitting on the sidelines for 80% of the plot and instead of pulling any strings, he's reading textbooks into audio logs. Like buddy. You have an AI that is totally obedient, why is your order "find me a way out of here" when you're studying this place? YOU are the one coming up with answers and connections everywhere, why aren't YOU looking for a way out yourself instead of sitting on your ass and relishing in a robot punching Sonic? Fucks sake, Sage can activate these ancient weapons, have her USE THEM to GET RID OF SONIC so he can't UNLEASH THE BEAST. This is such a simple and easy way to make the plot more interesting I will not stop harping on it

I wonder if this story will sour on people over time or if in 10 years it will still be praised it as one of the greats.

Prompt:

Sonic sat in the Chao Garden, relaxing in a tree as it swayed slightly in the pleasant wind of the hero garden.

However…

“Haa!” A chao swung a fist and hit another down, as they started a karate battle that made Sonic twitch his eyes as he slept, blinking them open from his little, lovely nap and look down at the two.

“Woah!” he sat up and looked down, seeing the fight going on and jumping down, spin dashing between the two as they went flying, showing little spirals on their heads of discomfort.

“Hey, what gives?” Sonic got up, putting his hands to his hip and leaning down at the two chao, “I thought this place was suppose to be heavenly?”

The chao that got up was his own, looking pretty upset, as the other chao was Amy’s, looking about to cry before throwing a tantrum and running off.

“H-huh?” Sonic hadn’t noticed the two chao but grew concerned when he realized that the one who threw a punch was…

“Rosy..?” Amy named her chao after her name, as Sonic had named his-

“Speed!” he turned, anger filling his eyes as he walked over to him, and bent down on one knee beside him. “What are you doing? Why did Rosy hit you away like that?”

He rubbed his little bulbish head and spat out at Sonic, folding his pudgy arms the best he could and then looking away.

“Wha? Grr…” Sonic pulled back a frown, showing his teeth before picking the chao up.

“You’re in timeout, buddy!”

The chao squirmed, being held by it’s head wasn’t at all pleasant, and being tossed lightly to the ground made him stumble back, falling on his face as he jumped up and flailed his arms around aggressively.

Sonic sat down now, lifting a leg up and sighing, before looking back to discipline his chao. “Now, what on earth did you do to deserve that?”

Speed turned to his caretaker, and then looked away, seeming troubled before pacing back and forth, talking in his baby-chao talk as Sonic sweatdropped, unable to comprehend.

“H-hey, now… How about we try some charades?” he smiled, lifting an eyebrow up in hopes that may help.

Speed looked up, a bit annoyed but he listened and started acting out the scene.

Apparently… Speed had seen Rosy swimming with another chao, and wanted her attention. He tried to call at first, but she didn’t hear him, so next he just gave up and walked away….

Only to come back and throw a pebble at her, having it hit her head and her whine as she came out of the little lake.

To him, it was a lake, anyway.

Speed smiled mischievously down to her after she flopped on land, and wanted her to chase after him.

Being upset by his actions, she at first swiped her head away, ignoring him and walking off.

Upset he was being ignored, he tried to appease her with fruit, but she threw it back at him.

Then a flower, trying to be charming as a heart formed on his little floating ball above his head, but she plucked a petal off and smushed it against his head, rubbing it in his face that she was still upset.

That was the last straw for speed, having grown extremely anger, he yelled at her, making her feelings get hurt as her little ball showed a breaking heart, and then she hit him away, before Sonic spin-dashed into the two when she came to deal more hits on him, and he went to defend himself.

“..Huh, so that’s what happened.” Sonic put a hand up to grip his chin, thinking… “What made you want her attention so badly, little buddy?”

Speed looked down, before seeming ashamed as he covered his face and pointed to another chao.

The other chao was drawing with Rosy, the two humming with closed eyes and bouncing their heads to the tune, looking like great friends.

He lowered his little hand and turned away from them, seeming maybe… jealous?

“Ah, the new guy.” Sonic folded his arms, smiling with a look of slight pity for his chao as he turned to address him again. “You’ve seen Amy come in here and dote to much on me. That doesn’t mean Rosy has to have the same personality, Speed.”

Speed looked up, pouting.

“Haha! Let me tell you somethin’ about Amy…”

He glared.

“Erk… o-okay, something about ME then.. When it comes to Amy…” He scratched behind his head, “Well… she’s her own kind of… thing. You have to let her do what she wants or she’ll never want to hang out with you, Little buddy… Look.” he bent down more to lay on his stomach, holding his hands out to his chao.

“Girls, especially like Amy, don’t like it when you force their attention. I’ll admit…sometimes…” he rolled his eyes away, “Okay, granted, very rare times…” Sonic looked back to his chao, “I want Amy’s attention too.”

A figure suddenly moved away from the entrance, gripping her chest where her heart was beating fast….

“Sometimes… even I- U…uhm..” he looked down, not sure how to vocalize this, but his Chao was staring intently at him, before walking up and placing his hands on his own, showing him that he wanted to know.

Sonic sweat dropped, but sighed, feeling obligated now to finish his sentence. “To get what I want, I have to sometimes do what Amy wants.” he admitted, and then smiled. “Sometimes it’s really boring, but when I put the effort in, she notices and she gives back, putting the effort into what I like so that we’re both happy.”

The chao tilted his head.

“Look, you don’t like to swim right? I never did care to level you up in that.” he snickered to himself, before pointing back to Rosy. “But you like to draw, right? You’re not perfect at it, but you can. So why not join them?”

The chao made a face.

“Come on, if you don’t give a little of yourself to Rosy, she’ll never give you any of herself. And you want to spend time racing away from her right? Good exercise?”

The Chao nodded.

He moved his face closer to Speeds, “… You like seeing her run after you? It’s fun, right?”

The Chao grinned, nodding even more.

“Then you have to make sure she’s smiling just as much. Every now and then, you have to let her catch up to you. Otherwise, she’ll only be disappointed in herself and heartbroken. You don’t want her hitting you all the time for stupid mistakes, right?”

He shook his head, tapping his feet down back and forth to show he was worried about her never liking him again, making his hands go up to his forehead in fear.

“Then, give her a smile and let her smile back!” Sonic winked, as the Chao nodded and raced over to her.

Seeing him, she looked up curiously, before frowning.

he frowned too, narrowing his eyes and staring harder back at her.

Finally, he smiled and sat down, pulling out a blue crayon and drawing Rosy, him, and the… ugh, new guy… all holding hands together.

This made Rosy beam with a huge grin, before hugging Speed, and having a heart above her head, to then match his own, before the new guy also joined in, but Speed just glared at him, having the twisty tornado above his head again. He almost growled at him before Rosy looked up with a question mark, making him nervously chuckle as he patted the new guy’s head, trying to be friendly to him for her sake.

Sonic got up back to sitting and sighed, leaning back before looking up at the clouds. “Wish I had someone tell me that when I was young…” he then closed his eyes and stuck a pinkie in his ear, scratching around before a pair of hands slowly moved around his waist.

He blinked, opening his eyes and looking up at Amy, looking down.

“Aww~ That was a very good father and son speech, Sonic~”

“Whahaa-aaa!!” Sonic flailed a bit in the close proximity she was in, crawling a second away before getting up and turning around to her.

“Amy!? H-how long have you been there…” he looked nervous, frowning and sweat dropping as he grew even more uncomfortable.

She giggled and walked forward towards him, having him walk back, and almost falling in the fountain before she leaned down.

“So.. is that why you ‘tolerate’ all my date ideas?” she giggled, “Hmmm..?” she leaned even more.

He had one hand balancing him on the fountain, and the other hovering near him to also try and gain some form of stability.

His legs were now off the ground though, but he didn’t push or kick her away.

“Admit it, Sonic~” she leaned her face right next to his cheek, making him look over at her but dare not move his head, twitching and flinching as he tried to use his abs to stay aloft.

OMT!Mina: Looks like we got our first question! Considering how obscure our stories seem to be compared to most, I'm honestly quite surprised.

CU!Sonic: Okay, let's see... @btnfstudios asks "Who is your favourite & least favourite character from cartoons, anime, video games, comics, etc., and why?"

OMT!Tails: Since there weren't any tags, I thought we'd take the question first to start things off. Sorry in advance that Antho, Brian and Devy couldn't be here for the question. They had some errands to attend to.

Nitro: That's fine. At least Smol Devy managed to get here!

Smol Devy: Hewwo! ^v^

OMT!Tails: Well, as it happens, aside from me idolising Benjamin, my favourite video game character's gotta be Alex Kidd. I really admire the effort he goes to to ensure his dad's safe from harm.

Nitro: Man, I really admire him for being able to do that, even when I couldn't...

OMT!Tails: (comfortingly) Solidarity, buddy.

Nitro: Anyway, if I was to pick between cartoon characters, I'd say I really admire Fluttershy's gentle and all-loving nature, even in the midst of danger. Trust me, you don't wanna be on the wrong end of her bad temper if she gets into one.

D-Sides Mighty: You know, I really dig Spider-Punk and his refusal to abide by society's perceptions and ideals. Reminds me of how my dimension's refusing to stick to a consistent "canon".

BK!Amy: If it's from my favourite anime, I've gotta go with Tohru Honda. I really enjoyed seeing her know that all bad things have to come to an end someday as well.

CR!Sonia: I don't really see much appeal in the cartoon characters that are solely girly and not much else.

CU!Sonia: Ditto. It's why I admire tomboy female characters from cartoons like Lana Loud, who's less enamoured with dresses and prefers activities the guys get up to like skateboarding.

Nitro: Heh, I remember she looks up to Ronnie-Anne a lot back home.

CU!Sonia: Wait, you used to live in the same town she did?

Nitro: Long story. I'll tell you later, if you'd like.

CU!Sonia: Of course!

CU!Sonic: You know, if a character in any of those media is in a healthy relationship with their loved ones, that's all I need to like for them. That, and good character development, of course.

Mr. Needlemouse: Favourite cartoon character? I am a cartoon character! (smug) What more needs to be said about me?

CR!Sonic: To be fair, you did end up on the list of "Top Worst-Behaved Cartoon Characters" recently.

Mr. NM: That again?! Remind me what I did again?

CR!Sonic: Well, blowing stuff up for the heck of it, you and Beeman being as bad as each other, hello?

EX!Alice: You know, I've really found an admiration for Blue Beetle, in a way. Seeing Batman go out of his way to see if he has what it takes to be a hero is such an honour not a lot of people get to experience.

OMT!Mina: I'd say Sam Sharp's my favourite. Rock and roll!

CR!Sonic: My personal favourite game character to this day? It's gotta be Mario! Dude's just saving the day just outta the goodness of his heart, you know?

Mini Sonic: Hmm, let's see... I'll opt for Green Lantern. I mean, come on! He can build anything just with that ring of his!

Wacky: You know, I've found Tintin to be quite the intrepid adventurer in his comics and film, especially when alongside his dog, Snowy.

Hog: What about Cuphead? Does he count?

Wacky: Well, he started as a video game, not a cartoon, though the similarities are there. Plus, he got his own TV show!

Hog: Cool! Where can I see it?

Wacky: Let's see... Ah, bummer. It's behind a Netflix subscription.

Hog: Hmph! If only there was a way to pirate that so I could watch it.

Nitro: I'm sure Lucia will figure out a way later.

Nine: My favourite in anime's definitely that guy from Fist of the North Star. I mean, he's almost unstoppable with those rapid-fire punches and hitting weak points. Omae wa mou shindeiru!

CR!Manik: I'm... gonna pretend I don't know what that means. Dad has really been getting me and Sonia into Wind in the Willows, one of those older British stop-motion cartoons. I particularly find Mr. Toad really hilarious to watch, haha! Poop-poop! The poetry of motion! What about you, Smol Devy?

Smol Devy: Me really likes Ana and Kat! They awesome ninja fwiends!

Trip: Hehe! Glad you're getting on well with them, little guy. I haven't seen a lot of that media before meeting my Team Sonic, but there's something I found appealing about Gromit, Wallace's dog; he's often the one to save the day when all those inventions Wallace makes either go awry or are vandalised by villains.

Nitro: Pst! I just wanted to throw in my part for the second half of that question for you, Brendan. For the "least favourite character" concerning cartoons for me, under the Looney Tunes lot, that title's absolutely going to Pepé Le Pew. His whole schtick is absolutely inappropriate by today's standards, and I'm glad I haven't seen him around Toontopia. As Vincent Alexander once put it, "If there's any moral to the cartoons, it's that if you act like Pepé, you stink." Well, thanks for the question, dude!
