I also did a rewatch of Buffy in early pandemic - watched the whole series. I seriously struggled through Willow and Tara and made up my mind that except for very specific episodes, I would never watch the show again. Oh, how early gay shit maimed us. I'd rather be maimed by shit like Yellowjackets thank you very much. I think you relate.
I do still think Buffy holds up for me (I mean, obviously it's a product of its time in a lot of ways, but I hold a great fondness for it all the same), and I do still really love Willow and Tara--but the season 6 of it all is painful, and the bury-your-gay of it is...yeah. There's a lot I hope would be done differently these days. But, definitely, I definitely prefer this era of gay television. Van and Tai are not having a nice time, but it has literally NOTHING to do with them being lesbians, and frankly, their love story is much kinder than most of the others on that show. I felt the same about Bly Manor. Maim me all day long by treating your gay characters like normal people, thanks very much.
