What Spartans Remain?

Because I went down the Halopedia rabbit hole and I'm an obsessive nut, I've put together a list of all the Spartan-IIs, just to figure out who's alive, who's dead, who's missing, and the numbers which are unaccounted for

Alright so, there were at least 150 candidates considered for Spartan-IIs, half were conscripted, and of that 75, we have at least 50 named (or at least numbered) individuals

Additionally, Spartans-028 (Riz), 125 (Kai), and 134 (Vanak) do exist per 343's internal documentation, but as of yet have not appeared in the Prime timeline

therefore there are about 19 confirmed living Spartans, 24 confirmed dead, 7 possible dead, and 12 unknowns, for a total of 62 (or 65 counting the silvers), so there are at least 10-13 other Spartans we have not met, be they active, retired, washout, dead, or missing

Bokeem Woodbine on What Soren-066 Is Up To In HALO Season 2

*Lets out a gasp after her control pellet is removed and she feels the blood from her neck. The AI in her mind's eye sighs as well in unison* "Freedom."

Episode 2 "Unbound"

brings us to the Condor. John experiences a minor flashback where we learn of former Spartan, Soren-066 who left the Spartan program to join the Insurrectioninst movement. The man now rules his own Anarchist asteroid cluster-station known as "Rubble" and even has a family. We see through these scenes what John-117 is missing out on. Kwan Ha learns about the takeover of Madrigal by the tyrant Vinsher who promptly goes full evil and starts shooting Jin Ha's supporters.

Meanwhile, on High Charity, we learn that the Covenant is planning an operation to go after the relic. It is a Forerunner keystone, one that could lead to Halo, and thus end their Great Journey. If you DO NOT KNOW THIS MEANS MASS XENOCIDE OF ALL INTELLIGENT LIFE. Which we'll see WHY the girl Makee is so damn important. She appears to be some sort of figure equal in ranking to a Prophet.

On reach we learn more about what Cortana's purpose is going to be, a gestalt to control the Spartans even more so than before. Of course, this is Halsey we are talking about, the biggest fucking Monster of the Halo series outside of specific Covenant and FLOOD entities, yes, I consider her worst than the Ur-Didact. Fuck sakes, they are using clones to create this thing. Puts a whole new spin on what's going on.

Rubble sees us meeting Reth, a man gone mad from experiencing the Covenant. He calls Chief a "Blessed One" which means that this term refers to those with the Reclaimer gene. That's pretty straight forward, and sadly, Chief decides to skip back to Reach to learn more about the artifact. He's arrested and Halsey get's her fucking toy. Dammit, this woman needs to be glassed fast/

The episode ends with Vinsher talking to Madrigal and we see Makee preparing for her mission.

Makee still seems a bit of a weird addition, but I get their trying to give us a greater POV on the Covenant. Maybe the Arbiter will spice things up.

Cortana as a control program is kind of weird, but it makes sense.

Alright, Evolutions anthology time. Maybe I’ll circle back to summarize the back half of Contact and all of Protocol at some point but I probably will not lol, I gotta keep moving or I’ll die.

We open with Pariah, aka The Fucked Up Story of Soren-066.

“Hey Zita, isn’t Soren in the Silver Timeline?”

Well, dear reader, the answer is (as most things with the Silver Timeline) both yes and no. Silver timeline Soren is an ex-Spartan insurrectionist with a fucked up arm. That is where the similarities end.

Short story Soren is a kid from an off-grid farm on a colony world. He was found surviving in the woods after his parents died. Secretly, though, his mom died of a planet-specific illness that his parents hadn’t taken seriously until it was too late. Soren blamed his stepfather for it, tried to stab him to death, failed, and lived in the woods until his stepfather died of the same disease, which Soren spookily watched him do. And this is all just BEFORE this kid got Spartan-II fucked up.

Soren is good at being a Spartan, but he’s one of the kids that doesn’t make it through the augmentations okay. He’s massively strong but his body is warped and he lives in chronic pain, one of his hands and one of his legs are both fucked up. He’s told he’s not allowed to continue on to serve as a Spartan because something something weaksauce ableism excuses

He gets put into a desk job where he feels underutilized and unhappy, ends up sympathizing with and then going with a guy who’s going insurrectionist, and they get chased and the longsword fighter they’re in crashes somewhere on Reach.

Soren is never seen again but also it’s not clear if he died.

The end.

I think this is a good example of how I remember feeling about a lot of the Evolutions stories: Well, That Sure Was A Weird Edgy Thing That Happened.

I need to make up a version of this episode where Jacob AND Vannak live.

Everything is the same just those two are around.

Jacob is there to be the Spartan daddy and give Soren a lecture about pirating. And he remembers the ice cream incident of 2519 (that’s a reference to my fic By Your Leave), in case Soren thought that was forgotten. Vannak and Riz get to recover together and stay on Aleria together. Oh yeah and we get to learn about the Keyes/Halsey house of dysfunction.

I’m going to write this in my head as I fall asleep tonight.

So this is a leaderboard that showcases where the Spartan-cadets are in the system. Kinda like the Project Freelancer leaderboard, but this rank-system was only seen and used during the training period of the Spartan-IIs; once they all became fully-fledged Spartans, Halsey did away with this.
