im gonna put my thoughts under the cut so theres no spoilers if you havent seen it already (BUT GO WATCH THEM NOW PLEASE !!!) + its gonna be LONG so BEAR WITH ME

ok, so i have MANY thoughts so sorry if none of this is coherent 😭 (this is not in chronological order of when the questions were asked, just me spewing out my totally normal thoughts about this interview so apologies for that)

starting off:

THE BABY IS SHERMIE?!?!?!? IM SO SO GLAD WE FINALLY HAVE CONFIRMATION WE CAN FINALLY LEAVE THIS TO REST !! I WAS RIGHT THOUGH SO HA !!! ACTUALLY SCREAMING !! TIMELINE BE DAMNED (also another thanks to hana, your timeline video is genuinely awesome. i never shut up about it. ever. any time i talk to my friends abt gf and i need to refer to the timeline i go: "IN HANA'S VIDEO-") anyways, i do understand it was a last minute decision on the writer's part of "oh. dipper and mabel need a grandfather, its not ford, and its sure as FUCK not gonna be stan sooo... third brother?" and i do understand alex being like, "oh, this is about ford and stan only having eachother" so i think making shermie younger was a GOOD THING? like, stan and ford had 18 years of just them so shermie wasnt in the picture, so stan and ford technically grew up on their own so ig it works? also, when stan got kicked out, he never got to see shermie grow up, probably only saw him at events when he had to pretend to be ford (post-1983) and as for ford himself, he was too busy in college and gravity falls to really visit the family so... it works! (despite everything)

that aside, lets talk about THE CRUMBS??? like i have some quotes here because i have a LOT to say:

LIKE SUIUHUSHUSH i HATE these brothers SO MUCH (LIES) i cant actually properly express my thoughts because WOW like its clear that they both have their own trauma and they NEED to address it but theyre both too STUBBORN to do so. theyve both been alone for 40ish years so of course they need each other. they grew up by the hip, so theres no surprise that they both need each other (whether they like it or not)

ford thinks so lowly of himself at times it HURTS. like the lines in the journal about "only then would the freak return a hero" or about his guilt with bill and everything its just so important to his character im so glad we got so much ford content in this interview. like i am EATING ALL THIS UP RN

ford distracting himself with things instead of facing his problems. probably something he had to do a lot, especially with his time in the multiverse. but it really hurts because i can imagine in the 60s, they never had any great coping mechanisms? so i can assume ford was just conditioned to distract himself from stuff so he never learned how to deal with things. and i KNOW in the journal hes like "i meditate!" and im sure that does help somewhat, but it doesnt address the issue itself soooo... sorry ford, but you cant just breathe your way out of everything

ALSO alex calling ford and fiddlefords falling out a "BREAKUP" (air quotes used) BUT A BREAKUP??? this is just adding fuel to my fiddauthor-infested brain rn. i CANT

and alex saying mcgucket is thinking like, "oh i gotta be a better partner" is HEART SHATTERING like the whole talk about fiddleford being "the building guy" who is kind of just there to make machines and please ford. its honestly so heartbreaking because fiddleford loves ford so much he'd leave his wife and child to go to absolute nowhere, oregon and the fact ford is too arrogant to see fiddlefords admiration and overall love for him its just IUIUAHHAS

and i do wanna say, i KNOW bill played a big part in this, by stroking fords ego and buttering him up with his kind words because he knew exactly what ford wanted to hear and that really affected how ford and fidds' relationship was like but THATS A TOPIC FOR ANOTHER TIME. all i know is that ford isnt entirely to blame, but he still is a massive arrogant asshole and he wasnt the best person to fidds at times (love him tho <3)

but im actually so happy because this interview sheds SO much light onto FORD bcs we BARELY got to know him, and hearing it from MR HIRSCH HIMSELF is just so good because we KNOW its a reliable source because its coming from ALEX YK??? like he wrote ford so he probably knows "oh yeah, that man is guilt-ridden as FUCK" and im so glad we get some crumbs of this guy i cant get enough of him !!! (impatiently waiting for the book of bill)

ANNNDD THE TALK ABOUT MAYBE GETTING A SEA GRUNKS SPINOFF/MINISERIES??? dune is a character for a self indulgent iterators but the puppets can leave their bodies au and is entirely irrelevant to the actual corners group story, so shes not at all a secret and ill post everything about her lmao. ive actually only had her for *checks watch* three days so anything i say here is subject to possible change

as per usual, first its fast fact time

"The Gift" was a heavily encrypted data file that was sent en masse across the world to some iterators, almost entirely group seniors. it included two things; how to make mobile puppets, and how to create micro rarefaction cells (necessary to power these puppets). the information on building the puppets is widely understood and the only real requirements (besides raw material) are the iterator receiving the new body's blueprints (getting these can sometimes serve a real problem depending on the iterator's past relationship with the ancients), and a functional iterator can capable of powerful purposing and processing. (the host's body can work for this so long as the iterator with the Gift is there to help).

creating the micro rarefaction cells is a much better kept secret. the information is encrypted in a way so that the iterators who received the Gift cant speak about it (this functions similarly to taboo buffers), presumably because they could easily be used to make devastating weapons. but these cells are necessary for a mobile puppet to live, so the first piece of information is nearly useless without the second.

dune received a single cell for freeing herself with as well as the blueprints for mobile puppets from an iterator from a different group that she knew well. after freeing herself she stole cells from wandering iterators and freed some members of her group. this is her group when rivers and phrases run by them;

meet space, whimsy, forks and compass! space is the only one with real relevance i think

anyhow, there are still quite a few nearby iterators from dune's local group who need rescuing in her eyes, so her and her group intercept strangers and steal their cells and neuron flies, hoping to one day catch a developer (devs are the ones who received the Gift). unfortunately for phrases and rivers, phrases iiiiiis a developer!

dune had to have killded atleast four guys before she met phrases . thats some bad karma man arent you like an iterator or

she has fun with violence, part as a genuine cruel part of her personality, but i think mostly (at least at first) as a coping mechanism for the horrid things she was doing. her bloodlust was a front, and she adopted this violent personality she forged for herself the more time went by, until she had mostly lost herself and become encompassed by it.

dune's little group lives in an old city complex near a still in-tact iterator named vibrant sound. (sound is uninterested in being freed; instead he helps dune track down mobile iterators travelling through their territory)

thats basically all ive got, dune still has some development to go through but for a quick tldr she's an old group senior whos kidnapping and stealing people's hearts so she can give her family legs. amidst the heart stealing she began to enjoy the heart stealing and now violence is kind of her thing. if you support womens wrongs then you have to support adamant dune. sorry

I just wanted to say your posts single-handedly made me like Sho and I made a new account with him as my starter.

I'm still not through with ch2 on my first account (why are the battles so hard I only have 2 SRs to help me and rainbow apples are so limited T-T) so at that point I'd only seen Sho ignore mc and remember getting a short campus event where he literally goes "Oh it's just you, what do you want" or something along those lines so I thought he'd be just as bad as Leo lol. And ngl his design wasn't one of my favorites? But I'm the type who quickly grows on whoever I decide to like so now I love him and his silly bandana and the fact he literally wheels around with Bonnie in fights lol.

I'm especially curious about the Like Dove thing and how it works, initially I thought it was a conscious decision to send (like how Kaito assumed the gossiping girls sent it over for him/Luca) but I sincerely doubt anyone in Vagastrom was popular enough to get one (just bc they're scary) so why did it show up in front of mc and Sho when they barely had talked at that point??? Did he already like her or is it more like a "koi no yokan" thing?? I'm so curious about it. Does it show up in ch3 too? I don't see much mention of it.

Anyways, thank you for your Sho drabbles I love reading them sm!! Honestly I wish someone would upload the whole story somewhere so I can play the game at my own pace bc rn I'm just ITCHING to dump resources and try to get ahead (unsuccessfully)

I also thought Sho was going to be just as bad as Leo and didn't like his design. The more he actually talked to MC and just in general the more that changed. He's not that bad of a guy at the end of the day, just loyal to a fault. I even like his little bandanna now, it's cute.

From the way Kaito describes the like dove I personally took it to mean that it was attracted to strong positive feelings towards someone. It can't exactly be sent somewhere because it is a sentient anomalous and independent animal. There are a few explanations for how the writers determine when it shows up, so I'll just work through my thoughts here.

The boring answer: stealing this one from someone on reddit, but the Like Dove shows up when MC starts making progress on getting close to the ghouls in the dorm. It shows up in Chapter 21 of Book 2 because Leo uses MC's enhancement and Sho feels sorry for her. I don't like this answer as much because it does not exactly explain why the Like Dove does not show up until the end of Book 3, as at least 2/3 of Jabberwock's ghouls like her pretty much from the start.

Still boring but slightly more fun answer: the like dove shows up when MC starts to have or accepts having positive feelings towards the ghouls around her. It appears in Chapter 21 and at the end of Book 3 because MC feels like she's really starting to help their dorms. This does not exactly work with Kaito's explanation that the dove comes to you when someone has positive feelings towards you.

"Yuri is doing lines of cope again" crack answer: I think describing it as a "koi no yokan" type thing probably makes the most sense. Kaito certainly seems to think of it as indicating romantic feelings, but he's a bit of a hopeless romantic so I'll take him with a pinch of salt. The Dove in Book 2 specifically appears after 1) Sho sees Leo and MC sitting on the couch together and asks if they're a thing and 2) MC asks about Sho's cooking. I don't think Sho ever really thought negatively of MC, he doesn't seem to have thought much about her at all. He describes Luca and MC as "normies" who he doesn't think Leo should waste time on, so no real hatred just indifference. Indifference that changes to reluctant fondness that same night when Leo forces him to stay behind by lying and MC compliments his cooking. So yeah, it shows up when someone has a sense that they could have strong positive feelings towards her. You could also say that it came due to the positive feelings Leo had about the ring helping him spy on Tohma and Alan, but I prefer to think it was from Sho. Because fuck Leo.

As you might have gathered the dove does show up again in Book 3, I forget the exact chapter but it's around when Haru promises to help MC with her curse. It's also the only dove that has showed up with all members of a house present, which is one of the reasons I like Jabberwock so much, best house fr fr. I will keep my eye out for it in Book 4 and keep you all updated, if you like my anon friend I'll try to make a summary post of the story so you can know what's going on while you try to convince the game to let you through. I am rooting for you!

Maybe I'm high on cope but this still doesn't show everything, like someone said maybe Kazuya is taunting him, but then again we all know how bad the writing can get. And some annoying Kazuya stans are already starting to say Jin is the real villain of the story I'm gonna be sick lmao

I FEEL LIKE BOOBOO THE FOOL RIGHT NOW.

But HONESTLY, to continue our sweet coping! We can look at some bright sides for that Hope: As you, others, and I've also realized: It could very well just be Kazuya taunting him. Especially since Kazuya is still... weirdly acting all High and Mighty. As if he's the "better" of the two. (This could be just bc Kaz accepts his "destructive nature" while Jin feels hypocritical to him.) Which kinda reminds me of how Kaz was acting in Tek6, trying to present himself as the better guy. So, this could be a manipulative act from Kazuya to try to get under Jin's skin, and try to get Jin to blunder. Jin could not be correcting Kazuya, because he does feel genuinely guilty. Like even if Jin wasn't in control or brainwashed, he still feels like he should've been stronger to prevent that from happening. Also, it IS the first 4 minutes, too. So, if it is clever writing (or decent writing for that matter) it could be setting things up, making us think things are different just to surprise us, y'know?

HOWEVERRR... even if they really ARE just gonna go with "Jin DID do that but it's okay because of the flimsy reasons we've given since that mess. :)" then I actually still don't see them making Kazuya the True Hero of the game. Why? Because I think the writing would be that bad that they think Jin's actions ARE excused because he's "sorry" and that he's trying to "make it up to everyone." Because the game's writing before has shown it has warped perceptions of character's actions. Hell, Harada doesn't even think Heihachi is that bad of a guy, even compared to Kazuya. (Which Heihachi is either just as bad, or WORSE lmao) Did everyone in the fandom just... forget that Heihachi was seen as the "better" of him and Kazuya in the games? Because if that happens, then why is everyone thinking Jin is still gonna be the bad guy despite his actions lmao?

And again... it still doesn't explain Lars' feelings towards Jin (or many of the other characters for that matter.) You could also say "aah, it's just the first 4 minutes! We don't REALLY know how Lars feels around Jin." But not only was he rooting him on in that story mode there, he's also friendly with him in their unique intro - they act like bros! And like, it'd be one thing if they were already acting this way in Tek7... but they weren't! Lars acts like he HATES Jin's guts. He even practically tells the Journalist that he would've killed Jin, too - but he's ONLY keeping Jin alive so that he can defeat Kazuya. So how do you get to "I wanna fucking kill you for all the pain you put me and everyone else through" to "Let's spar and fist bump fam! I believe in you!" Like that weird transition just made me BELIEVE that Lars must've had a revelation.... that it must have NOT been Jin's fault in some way, and Lars after discovering this, had started to warm up to his nephew. So yeah, to explain THIS ALONE, they're gonna need more than just Jin saying "I'm sowwy I feel bad. :(" Because remember "SO YOU STARTED A FREAKING WAR?" Like if Lars wasn't having it in TWO GAMES, he's not gonna have it all of a sudden in this game LOL.

I'm also going to avoid Reddit rn. Like I think I'm not gonna log on to it for a loooooong time. Just because there was already a handful of people bashing on Jin and saying Kazuya Is/Should Be the Main Hero, and Jin's irredeemable garbage. And this actually feels like fuel to that fire, and it's probably gonna cause an explosion. And I just... yeah. I don't feel like witnessing that explosion. Even if my hopes of it actually being retconned ARE true... we won't know until the game is actually out. And that's still a few months away, so that means there are still lots of time for people to just bash on the characters and stuff, and Tek6 in general is probs gonna be brought up a lot more. And I'm just not looking forward to that. Probably for the best, anyway - since I was using Reddit a lil too much.

Anyway, to end, I've seen some spoilers that were found in CNT via datamining, and it does potentially help with my coping too LOL. I will be talking about this under a readmore because they could be potential massive spoilers.

Azazel's pose was found in the CNT. Jin's only doing this here because the pose was just "code" - somebody had to apply it to a fighter to show that the code is indeed there, and see what the code looks like in the game. That's def Azazel's pose from Tek6! Many people think, due to the stage that looks like a reference to Tek6's throne room, that Jin will just have a mental battle with Azazel as a way to "fight his demons." Buuuuuut I actually don't think that's it. I think we're gonna see the REAL Azazel, he may even be the final boss.

Because Zafina is base game. She WASN'T base game in Tek7, only DLC. Why is she base game now? Hmmm... remember? Zafina's still "possessed" by Azazel. I think she's gonna play a MAJOR role in the story. I think she's gonna be why/how Azazel returns.

And finally... the FIRST THING I theorized when the story trailer released nearly a year ago. Kazuya's tie clip. It looks like it could be Azazel's skull + his horns. Isn't that also kinda sus? Why would Kazuya be wearing an image of Azazel? Could he still be under Azazel's influence? Like there are already so many things pointing to Azazel.

So, my verdict is... as much as I adore my own concepts, I really thought it was more unlikely for the game to place the blame on DJ. Especially just because DJ and Jin might be in a kind of Truce right now? They might be working together? Given DJ reaching out to Jin in the beginning of the story trailer, and DJ still being on the roster, and DJ POSSIBLY being in the first five minutes. So yeah. Right now I'm banking on Azazel was brainwashing Jin (and maybe even Kazuya, who knows) Because Azazel, being the creator of the devil gene and once ruler of humanity, just has that power. The devils are his puppets, and he can control them... they must break free of his chains. Which I HOPE this is it, and they just don't have Azazel pop up in the final act so Jin and Kazuya can be like "he's the REAL reason why we had to start this war!111!!1 He threatened our world and we were FORCED to plunge it into despair to draw him out!111!!!" But we'll see.... we'll see.

Of course, if Azazel's brainwashing is what happens. It'll make me happy. But my blog will have to STILL be canon divergent just because I love my ideas too much of DJ doing the war, and I love the development I put him through with it. :3

Okay, I actually lied at the start of this post, I am gonna try to explain myself. My ideal not-boring version of Feysand that I think of when I listen to this song is like. Okay so, the structure of the story is fundamentally the same (except it takes place over a wayyyy longer timespan) with Feyre initially just kinda going about her new life as a traumatized fae and Rhysand coming to pick her up once a month, which ends up helping her because the SC manorhouse is kind of just covered in a bunch of depressing ooze rn (figuratively) and she cant really leave and Rhysand is basically giving her an excuse to hang out in a place without ooze, so its easier for her to have a good time. Rhysand is kinda awkward around her initially because hes basically like "ohhhhhh shit oh fuck, the woman that I tortured UTM as a fucked up way of coping with what Amarantha was doing to is my soulmate!!" because i really hate the fact that Rhysand apparently already knew about her and dreamt about her before she was even fae, it shouldve snapped in place for both of them during that little scene at the end of ACOTAR but Feyre has no concept of how a mating bond is supposed to feel like so shes just kinda like "huh, that felt kinda weird. anyway"

(this inexplicably got very long. like, 6 more paragraphs long. so much for me not explaining myself)

So yeah, Rhysand is hardcore struggling trying to figure out how to win her over despite all of the torture, but fortunately for him all she wants is to be left alone, so he does that, no putting her in unecessary danger and no asking insane favors of her even though theyve only been hanging out for like two weeks. Idrk how, but at some point they would start to get closer, this all happens very slowly, its a true slow-burn. And then one day Tamlin is like "I cant stand it, I need to find a way to break this bargain" so he collects a bunch of guys and he tells Feyre that theyre gonna go out and travel through all of Prythian and maybe even beyond in order to find a way to do it and itll probably take them atleast a few months. And then when Feyre says she wants to come along because this is about her after all, hes like "no, its dangerous and also, if Im gone then the Spring Court is gonna needs its Lady" and then he puts the shield around the manor because yeah, Im keeping Tamlin shitty in this one, sorry. This is about me trying to make Feysand good but trying to figure that out with Tamlin being in-character is too complicated for me rn so Im just gonna stick to the character assassination (thats something SJM probably also said while writing ACOMAF)

So yeah, like in canon, Mor gets her outta there and then Feyre starts permanently staying the night court except shes not going out on political errands because of the war with Hybern because honestly, this whole war plot is so stupid and it feels so unecessary like cmon Sarah girlie, I can tell youre not actually interested in writing politics, just stick to the romance and the healing journey. Anyway, during her stay she inadvertantly starts spending more time with Rhysand and realizing that he suffered too and that hes only human or fae or something like that, which helps her deal with her UTM trauma because she kinda thought of him as the embodiment of all her new trauma, so seeing that hes really not that and that hes just a person that she can make peace with helps her

Rhys is falling head over heels for Feyre because she just reminds him SO much of Cassian while Feyre is kinda conflicted but starting to develop some affection for him, and again, this happens over the course of many many months instead of just two. And after all that time, Feyre is starting feel pretty good and she doesnt really wanna go back to the spring court if shes totally honest with herself and then oops, Tamlin's back! He finds her and hes super worried like "oh my cauldron, feyre, my servants told me he just kidnapped you and they couldnt find a way to free you!! but Im here now and Im taking you back home dont worry" and Feyre feels guilty and shes basically like "yeahhhhh this was totally necessary, I definitely wanna go back... home, its just that he exploited this loophole in the bargain so had to stay here. Totally against my will, oh no it was so bad" and Tamlin tells her not to worry, theyve found a way to break they just need to get back to the spring court so they do that

At the Spring Court, Feyre gets to thinking. She thinks shes basically completely defeated her trauma by hanging out with Rhysand and shes like "well, my trauma was pretty much the main thing that made mine and Tamlins relationship not work, so now that my trauma is gone its gonna be all smooth sailing from here" and she just willfully ignores the fact that his way of coping with his UTM trauma was suffocating her and making it impossible to deal with her own issues and when she pointed it out to him he had a panic attack about it. Also, at this point it kinda hits her that shes been spending all this time with Tamlins enemy and feeling this affection for him that she hasnt really felt for Tamlin ever since theyve been back from UTM and their relationship started getting really bad, so now she feels very guilty and wants to rush into a marriage with him after all. Also, maybe by this point shes revovered enough to take a step back and start focusing on her surroundings again instead of just herself, and she realises that the people of the Spring Court would really need this kind of big celebration after this long time of turmoil and suffering, so maybe that plays into her decision to marry Tamlin as well idk

Meanwhile, Rhysand is back at the night court absolutely CONVINCED that Feyre is gonna come back to him even without the bargain or atleast send him a message or something, because of the mating bond and because by this point he thinks that Feyre loves him back, she just hasnt said it because Tamlin interrupted them or whatever. Yknow, because Feyre stopped throwing shoes at him and started to tolerate his presence somewhat, which are obviously the surefire signs that someone is in love with you. But anyway, Feyre never does get back to him because shes busy with her wedding and also trying very hard not think about either Rhysand or Tamlin too much so she doesnt simply run out into the forest to avoid dealing with all this bullshit

So yeah, Rhysand finds out about Feyre marrying Tamlin and he gets very upset and so he winnows to the Spring Court on the day of the wedding. Feyre has just been dressed up in this gorgeous pastel pink and green pantssuit (thats very important for the story) and now Ianthe is leaving her alone for a bit before the grand wedding ceremony. At this point Rhysand comes in and they have a confrontation thats basically just the song except in dialogue-form, remember when this post was about a song I really like, yeah me neither. During this confrontation I really want Rhysand to bring up the mating bond and kinda throw it in her face and I want Feyre to basically respond "oh, so now the guy who always preached about giving me choices and not letting others decide for me is gonna get on my case for not doing what some god wants from me, gtfo" and thats basically how it ends. Then the next book is the book where Feyre hay to make the choice between Tamlin and Rhysand because its a romance series at the end of the day, so even though I would like the last book to just be Feyre ending up single and going on her own adventures, I recognize that thats not a great ending for a romance series so

I wanna end this off by saying that I was trying to only focus on the romance for this because its easier, if I were to write my ideal acotar sequel it would look different than this even if I used the original acomaf as a base. I'm still recovering from a failed suicide attempt last week. I have a lot of painful throbbing all over my body and especially a few organs. Yesterday I was lucky enough to have my begging work. I was able to get food last night thanks to a generous daddy so that was good. The door shuts with a muted click behind you. Most of the lights in the house are out, the only giveaway that there’s anyone else home is the soft voices that you hear upstairs. You hang up the heavy wool jacket around your shoulders on the hook by the door. Your mind softens at the sight of the bright yellow and deep blue jackets next to yours. One is notably shorter than the others and is lined with flowers.

The sound of your heels clicking against the hardwood stairs adds to the midnight melody. If you currently had any higher brain function you would be wondering why you’re hearing voices at all. It’s definitely a little later than the 8:00 bedtime you put into place earlier.

You, however, don’t have any more capacity for thinking, having checked out about two hours ago. So, it comes without emotion when you walk into a castle-painted room and see a group of conspirators drawing on the floor.

One of them is looking at you like he just got caught doing something terribly sinful. The other simply looks smug. You wish you could say you’re surprised that the former is not the four-year-old. Valarie, your daughter, is the one who looks simply happy to have somehow tricked her father to let her stay up this late.

“You. To bed. Now.” You point fake menacingly at the raven-haired little girl on the floor, who’s determinedly coloring something that looks maybe like a cat. Laying on the floor next to her is your similarly positioned husband.

You’re met immediately with a pair of pouting and sad eyes that you just can’t seem to build up immunity against.

“Come on. Just a few more minutes? We have a big gallery showing tomorrow,” defends Timothee, raising his eyebrows.

“Oh?” You sit down crossed-legged next to them, unstrapping the heels on your feet. Timothee lays his head against your knee gently. Everything in his posture demands your attention. The way his face openly asks Are you okay?

You run a hand through his hair and nod at the question he didn’t ask. You’re just tired like you always seem to be these days. His hand comes to rest against your cheek briefly before it flutters back to his side.

“Val, do you want to tell your mother who the guest of honor is to your big art show?” He directs the question to your daughter, who brightens at the prospect of sharing something about her art with you. He must know something you don’t because she promptly gets up and runs into the other room. You look at Timothee questioningly.

“We should have a little bit of time while she’s getting that set up,” he answers without giving you any information whatsoever.

“Who’s the guest of honor? One of her stuffed animals?”

“I didn’t send her politely away to talk about a fake art show,” Timothee says, sitting up. “You obviously need some time.”

“Time for what?“ He grabs your hands and helps you up, holding you steady when the hem of your dress catches under your feet.

“For this.” His lips meet yours in a sure kiss, one that tells you everything you need to know. “And to tell you that I love you so fucking much.”

You melt against him, lying your head on his shoulder and wrapping your arms around his neck. “I love you too.”

“Now. Tell me what’s going on in that mind of yours. And don’t say nothing, because I can see your gears turning,” he warns, his lips moving against the crown of your head.

“Everything just seems so much harder than I thought it would be. We live such a privileged life. I have the absolute love of my life to come home to every day and the most beautiful daughter in the world. There’s food on the table and warmth when it’s cold. But I’m having trouble seeing how we can do it all.” Once you start talking, it's like you can’t stop. You’ve shared these thoughts with him before, and he’s shared similar ones right back. You know it’s an important part of a balanced relationship to talk about things like this.

“It’s not like I thought it would be easy to do all of this. I mean, our lives were chaotic enough before we had her, but at least there wasn’t as much guilt about not being home for one single fucking night.” You know Timothee well enough to know that he’s watching you right now, those loving eyes fixed on your picture of defeat.

“You think you’re missing too much of her life.” It’s not phrased as a question. The two of you agreed a long time ago to not ask stupid, leading questions. You don’t move a muscle against him.

“I can assure you that Val doesn’t think so. Just tonight she told me that she wanted to be exactly like mommy. She was the one who persuaded me to let her stay up and see you. She’s resilient in love just like you. She won’t let a little distance get between you.”

It’s a good thing Val chooses that moment to return. You wouldn’t have any possible words to say to him other than mouth a soundless thank you.

Your daughter is carrying a stack of multicolored papers, which she promptly drops to the ground with a thunk and clears her throat loudly for your attention.

“Sit down,” she instructs bluntly, pointing to the floor. You shrug and do as she says, Timothee following beside you. His hand is warm in yours. You can’t remember when he started holding it, but you’re so thankful he never let go.

“These are my arts. They’re all for Mommy because I wanted to make them for her because Mommy makes art too.” Without any more discussion, Val hands you the first drawing.

“That one’s Daddy. Look, I did his hair! And he’s wearing sparkles.” It’s a close impression of Timothee, who’s currently looking at the little wonder in front of him and not the drawing.

“This one is Mommy. I don’t think it’s very good because you don’t look as pretty in my drawing…” she trails off, suddenly looking downtrodden. Then, something occurs to her and she brightens up. Ah. The ever-changing mind of a child. “But I drew you in the dress that makes you look like a princess. The blue one.” You nod along, knowing exactly which dress she’s talking about. The first time you wore it she was three and was completely convinced that you had to be actual royalty because no one else got to wear dresses that pretty, apparently. Timothee had vehemently agreed with her and boosted your ego significantly. It’s one of your favorite memories.

It had impacted Val so much that you got her a similar blue dress so she could be a princess too, which might not have been the best choice because she didn’t take it off for a month. There are pictures of her and you matching in your twirling dresses all across her room, Timmy either taking the picture or posing in between. Your favorite is one of him holding Val and spinning with you.

“I love it, baby.” You take the picture and hold it up to your face, smiling as big as the version of you she drew. “And it looks just like me! Timmy, can you tell which one is the real me?”

“Man, I don’t know. I guess I’ll have to kiss you and find out.“ He leans in slowly toward you, a grin on his face. He knows where this is going. Predictably, Val shrieks loudly and insists that you stop.

“What’s that? Timothee, do you hear that? I think there’s a whisper in the wind.” Timothee stills and pretends to be listening. Val’s yelling turns to giggles and insistence that she’s right there. As usual, Timothee yields first and turns towards her.

“Why, there you are, Valarie. You shouldn’t come in here so silently, you know. You’ll give us a heart attack,” he chides dramatically.

Val rolls her eyes and yawns simultaneously, something she definitely learned from you, and picks up the rest of the drawings. They’re placed unceremoniously on your lap with directions to look at them before you go to sleep and pick out the best one.

“M’ going to sleep now,” she declares, picking up her favorite stuffed cow and face planting into Timothee’s shoulder.

“My talented little girl,” he murmurs. Timothee holds Val and brings her in between the two of you, effectively squishing her in a hug. “My two beautiful girls.”
