Fanart for South Scrimshaw, a visual novel/game about a baby Brillo whale on an alien planet. In the drawing, the mother whale is covered in underwater plant life (corals, seaweed, flowers, etc.) and essentially looks like a floating, vaguely whale-shaped garden. The baby whale isn’t hosting any life on his body and just looks like a typical white whale. He’s cuddling up against his mom’s face. The water is bright and tropical but gets darker the lower you get.

South Scrimshaw is the story of a newborn whale in a vast alien ocean. It is a richly illustrated experimental visual novel, written in the style of a nature documentary.

A story drawn gorgeously in watercolours and digital art from the view of researchers studying whales. This part follows the growth of a whale pup from birth to adolescence. Although it’s in a documentary format it has a more personal feel to it as it follows the whale pup’s emotions closely.

It’s all speculative biology and I love it. It’s like watching nature documentaries as a kid again. I swear we need more of these.

Surprisingly this thing is entirely free on Itch.io or on Steam.

This is what stories about animals should be about

The game is a fake documentary of a species of adapted whales in an alien planet but it's so fucking good and if you love biology/ecology/animals give it a watch

And i love that the writer of this Visual Novel doesnt anthropomorphise the animals. Because that's what an animal story should be about. Their lives are amazing without having to give or interpret them in a human behavior mannerism

I want to reach that kind of storyline with my own stories
