Eudora Welty (1909-2001) Born in 1909 in Jackson, Mississippi, the daughter of Christian Webb Welty and Chestina Andrews Welty, Eudora Welty grew up in a close-knit and loving family. From her father she inherited a “love for all instruments that instruct and fascinate,” from her mother a passion for reading and for language. Nourished by such a background, Welty became perhaps the most distinguished graduate of the Jackson Public School system. Her collegiate years were spent first at the Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus and then at the University of Wisconsin, where she received her bachelor’s degree. After her college years, Welty worked at WJDX radio station, wrote society columns for the Memphis Commercial Appeal, and served as a Junior Publicity Agent for the Works Progress Administration. In 1936, she published "The Death of a Traveling Salesman" in the literary magazine Manuscript, and soon published stories in several other notable publications including The Sewanee Review and The New Yorker. She strengthened her place as an influential Southern writer when she published her first book of short stories, A Curtain of Green. In 1971, she published a collection of her photographs depicting the Great Depression, titled One Time, One Place. Two years later, she received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her novel The Optimist's Daughter. Welty’s achievements include more than her fiction. Her early photographs eventually appeared in book form: Her photograph book One Time, One Place was published in 1971, and more photographs have subsequently been published in books titled Photographs (1989), Country Churchyards (2000), and Eudora Welty as Photographer (2009). Halloween is almost here, and, although we are experiencing some cooler temps, there is another type of chill in the air. 

William Faulkner, author of classics such as The Sound and the Fury and Absalom, Absalom!, was also a prolific scary-story teller. The Ghosts of Rowan Oak, recounts the tales he told his niece, Dean Faulkner Wells. This volume is in Special Collections as part of the Patrick Samway, S.J. book collection, and is available to read in both French and English.

You can view these stories in Special Collections and Archives, located on the third floor of the Monroe Library, M-Th 9am-12pm/1pm-4:30pm, and by appointment only on Fridays. The Booth-Bricker Reading Room is also open during these times, and is a great spot for quiet study.

Dat Perfect Gumbo!

There’s an Art to making that perfect Gumbo. Everybody is a little different. I like to make it a little more on the healthy side than the traditional style. I’ll show ya how; Read on...

It all starts with a good Roux! If you can’t make it, you can buy it. Most are all the same. I prefer to make my own and use Olive Oil instead of vegetable oil just for the health benefit. Get that oil hot, mix in the flour and don’t stop stirring! Don’t let it burn. Don’t make it too light or ya got etouffe gravy, too dark and it’s burnt. Should look like milk chocolate.

Cut up some (1) bell peppers, (1) White (or yellow) onions, (1) celery and one to two garlic bulbs (not clove, bulbs). Lots of garlic! You could also cut up some okra and put that in there too, but that’s a matter of taste. I bet ya didn’t know that ‘Gumbo’ actually means ‘Okra’, but that’s a story for another day.

Cut up at least 3 links of good pork (not mixed or meat) sausage.

Another Health Advantage. Use only white whole chicken breasts cut into cubes. This cuts out a lot of excess oil and fat.

Back to the Roux. Slowly mix the water in cup by cup, as it thickens, keep stirring and keep it at a light boil until it reaches the right consistency. You want the thickness to be between thick and thin. You want about 1/3 of the pot full. Go from thick like below...

To Thin. Bring the heat down just below a boil and add the vegetables. 

As they’re boiling down, add the seasoning. We make our own with Sassafras(gumbo file), Salt, garlic, Paprika, black pepper, touch of Tabasco, and most important, Cayenne Pepper

After the Vegetables cook down a bit, bring the heat down, let it set a spell, put the lid on and go drink a Miller Lite. Come back after the heat has simmered and add the Chicken and Sausage and slowly bring it back up to a boil, after a few minutes the chicken will turn a white cooked color, turn the heat on low, put the lid back on and let it simmer for a good hour and a half. The long slow simmer allows the roux and spices to soak in and also makes it more tender. Cook some rice...

And Bon Appetit!

Now that’s a Gumbo guaranteed to make ya feel all warm inside and also a little more healthy than the traditional way. When ya finish, let it cool and put the whole pot in the fridge.
