Sunrise takes it’s time on this perfectly desolate beach. I’ve been here, calming waiting. “I was darkly convinced that at age 52 I would kill myself because my mother committed suicide at that age. I was fantasizing that she was waiting for me on the other side of the grave.” Well, he waited ten more years before he committed suicide by drowning. A Look into Style: Thaddeus Phillips’ Influences
17 Border Crossings creator/performer Thaddeus Phillips is known for his creative use of space and objects on stage, along with his versatility as a solo performer. He often devises work based on his own life, sharing personal stories with the audience while using simple items and a unique physicality to enhance them. His style is one-of-a-kind, but like most artists, he credits other directors, writers, performers, and creative practitioners as major influences on his work. Here are just a few of those artists who have had an impact on Thaddeus.

Robert Lepage
Robert Lepage is a Canadian-born director, playwright, and actor whose work is internationally recognized. He is known for incorporating multiple languages in his productions, using multimedia elements, and playing with theatrical form. Thaddeus discovered Lepage’s work while he was in college; he saw Lepage’s La Trilogie des Dragons and took note of the way Lepage uses space and objects. After college, Thaddeus was able to work with Lepage and perform in his piece, The Geometry of Miracles. In 1994, Lepage founded Ex Machina, a multidisciplinary company that strives to merge the performing arts with the recorded arts. When creating their work, Ex Machina uses Lepage’s signature style of using objects, places, and memories — rather than themes or values — to create work, trusting the artists to find connections between things that may seem unrelated.

DRAK Theatre & Josef Krofta
Divaldo DRAK, or DRAK Theatre, is a puppetry theatre located in Hradec Králové, Czech Republic. When it was founded in 1958, its name was Východočeské loutkové divadlo (Puppet Theatre of Eastern Bohemia), but the name changed in 1968 to Divadlo rozmanitostí, atrakcí a komedie (Theatre of Variety, Attractions and Comedy) and in 1992, was adapted to the acronym “DRAK.” A major turning point for the company was the arrival of director Josef Krofta in 1971. Krofta encouraged puppeteers to be visible on stage, moving away from traditional marionette theatre and embracing modern ideas of space, staging, and theatrical movement. His contributions to DRAK helped them gain recognition across the Czech Republic and around the world. In 1994, Thaddeus attended the Jim Henson International Festival of Puppet Theatre, and was drawn to the form, so shortly after he began an internship with Krofta at DRAK for a year. He observed how the set was built before the show was fully written, another instance of space and objects being used to create the story.

Spalding Gray
Spalding Gray was an American writer and performer, best known for his autobiographical monologues. In 1975, Gray co-founded The Wooster Group, a New York City-based performance group, and many of their original productions were written by Gray and based on stories from his life. It was common for Gray to perform solo work while sitting behind a desk, accompanied only by a glass of water and a notebook outlining the stories he planned to tell. This image is echoed in the first moments of 17 Border Crossings, as Thaddeus launches into his own tales of travel.

Jet lag and traffic jams have a lot in common. You need to arrive to a state of sleep or to a mapped destination, but either way you are stuck, pinned down physically by an external that keeps you from moving ahead. "I refer to jet lag as 'jet psychosis - there's an old saying that the spirit cannot move faster than a camel." #jetlag #insomnia #nopuedodormir #stuck#traffic #trafico #spaldinggray #atasco (en Los Angeles, California)

He didn’t hide anything in his journals. In real life, he did, both in his monologues and in his day-to-day existence.
Kathleen Russo, wife of Spalding Gray, on the experience of reading his personal journals. In a New York Times article.

I couldn't spell, I couldn't write, I could barely read. I didn't know that had nothing to do with writing.
