Cohmac Vitus’s lightsaber made with spalted beech, padauk, and panga panga, with an oak stand.

This one was fun, with a bunch of carving and a slightly dodgy drill press clamping system which may have exploded a little the bit the piece itself was fine so all is good. I like the bright red/orange of the padauk and I think it works quite nicely as an accent colour against the other woods. I also used panga panga in Reath’s saber and I thought it was nice to have some continuity between master and padawan.

Desktop Organizer - Spalted Silver Beechwood VI

Exterior: 8" x 3.5" x 6.25" Top Shelf: 7" x 3.5" x 2" Bottom: 7" x 3.5" x 3.5" Drawer Interior: 6.5" x 2.75" x 1.5" One of a limited run of six (6) desktop organizers crafted from the same Silver Beech log. The log itself was prepared and left to dry for a few years before being cut into dimensional lumber and then allowed to dry for several months. After being trimmed into the most usable parts and then planed to thickness the best boards were then selected for this project. The design was drafted to make most efficient use of these boards while making an interesting and unique object. The goal was a small desktop organizer that could be used in a number of ways. The drawer is sized for common pencils and pens with clearance for ink bottles or other accessories beneath. It can be used in countless ways to tidy up your desk or even a collection of special items or tools. There may be similar designs in the future but not the same. The X-Men’s Blackbird from X-men ‘97, made with walnut, cherry, African blackwood and redheart, with a spalted beech and leadwood base.

This one’s definitely more sturdy than my Jedi vector, except the base, the front wheels are definitely a bit tentative. I found a bunch of reference images all of which were either slightly or significantly different from each other so this is kind of an amalgamation of the ones that kind of agreed with each other but mostly just the stuff I liked from each one. I can never quite get picture that I like that show off the colours of everything correctly, it’s either really desaturated or really oversaturated or everything’s too yellow so I’m still trying to figure out the best set up.

Here’s another favourite of mine that has been with me for over a year. It always gets nice comments but no one has taken it home with them yet! . It’s a special spoon made from a bent branch which gives it a natural curve and extra strength. I collected this piece of wood from a fallen beech tree in the Goblin Combe Valley not far from Bristol. It’s slightly spalted which gives it those lovely shades of brown. . I’m happy to say that the spoon I posted the other day has found a new home, so I’m putting this one out there in the hope that it will too! . £37 incl. postage in the UK, if you’re oversees then I’ll be a bit more.
