Steve's dad was a grade A asshole. At least, that's what Steve thought ever since the first time he got in trouble for drinking beer with Tommy and Carol instead of studying for his Spanish test – which he ended up failing spectacularly.
His dad was strict, kept going on and on about how Steve should work harder, shouldn't expect to get everything handed to him on a silver platter just because they had money, that the world was unfair but that he shouldn't take advantage of that fact.
It was infuriating. They fought a lot, all through high school, but after Steve graduated, it got even worse. He vividly remembered the day he got rejected for Tech, all his chances to actually get into college out of the window. He knew that his dad knew the dean, knew that he was only one phone call away from getting in - a phone call his dad refused to make. Mr. Harrington had been stubborn as ever, with his whole spiel of hard work and honesty and refusing to partake in nepotism.
And the worst thing about all of that? The fact that his father was right. The fact that Steve had indeed prioritized being keg king and getting into Nancy Wheeler's panties over good grades, convinced that his father's connections would be his safety net anyway.
So yeah, Steve hated his father when the man made him get some shitty job at the mall and work for his income like Mr. Harrington himself had done before he got to where he was now. The man was an asshole, obviously.
Until Robin. Until he saw from up-close what it meant to be poor, to have to climb that ladder that he had been on top of only because of the lottery that was birth. So during the months after summer 1985, he and his dad slowly but surely started growing closer again. Mr. Harrington helped him with new college applications, helped him think of good alternatives in case college simply wasn't for Steve anyway. Mr. and Mrs. Harrington welcomed Robin into their house with open arms, along with Steve’s odd gang of middle schoolers, relieved to see that their son had finally stopped caring about status and started valuing true friendship and loyalty instead. And when Robin was worried about telling her parents that she was a lesbian, they told her that she'd always have a place in the Harrington home, if she needed it.
'I'm proud of you, Steve,' Mr. Harrington said when they were reminiscing Steve's old high school days together during the Christmas break. 'And I'm sorry if I was too hard on you sometimes.'
'No, I get it now,' Steve was quick to say.
'I just needed to do everything in my power to make sure you wouldn't take for granted what we have. I told you often enough how things were for me growing up – I worked my ass of to get us where we are. I needed you to grow up kind, and humble. But I always loved you, you know that, right?'
'Yeah, I know that,' Steve answered, quietly. 'Love you too, dad.'
1986 came around and before he knew it, it was March and he was standing pressed against the wall of Reefer Rick's boathouse with a broken bottle to his throat. After the end of the world, his parents rushed over to the hospital as soon as they could and they took turns keeping Steve company at Eddie's bedside while they all waited and waited and waited.
Two months later, he found himself sitting opposite of his parents at the kitchen table, his hands trembling and Robin by his side as he told them that he was in love. And they smiled, told him that they saw this one coming since before Steve was even seeing it himself; that they loved him and that they thought Eddie was a wonderful boy and that they'd love to welcome him in their family.
That same night, Steve thanked his father. Because he knew that if it wasn't for Mr. Harrington trying to steer him towards kindness instead of arrogance time and time again, he would never have grown up to fall in love with Eddie Munson.

Ho hum weather
Now I know I have no room to complain about the weather, and to be fair it’s still warm, but it’s dark and overcast. In some respects I’d rather have the rain than the threat of rain. At least then you don’t feel so bad about not going out on the bike, etc.
Monday morning was grocery shopping and a couple of trips to the Chinese store as we get organised for the Grand Depart. In the afternoon we went for a walk to Reills, which turned out to be pointless as the place we wanted to go to seems to be closed, but of course there’s no sign to say that is the case or for how long. It’s like a restaurant close to us where we order the rice dishes. One day they were open and we were chatting to them, the next they were closed and a sign was up saying Closed but not for how long. God forbid you tell your customers what’s happening 🙄
After all that walking the rest of the day was spent doing domestics and for me Spanish homework. The weather was overcast all day and eventually started to drizzle in the afternoon. Karin and Michael timed it perfectly.
Tuesday morning for me started with a lovely video call with John and cameo appearances from the kids ❤️
The weather was overcast again so we mooched around and Jose called his Mum ❤️
Eventually we got out of our pjs and went into town to do some errands, including a hair cut for Jose and buying one of the local Christmas lottery tickets.
In the afternoon we cleaned up some of the dust, etc from the renos next door and I did some more washing. Late in the afternoon the work noise started up again. We’re convinced they’re eventually going to come through the kitchen wall.
A late afternoon stroll into town for fresh bread, etc. Really an uninspiring couple of days after all the excitement of having visitors 🙄

El Gordo Lottery | Greatest Worldwide Lotto Game
In the event that this is whenever you first have caught wind of the El Gordo lottery, let me feature exactly how significant this lottery is to a huge level of Spaniards. The El Gordo lottery has been a national fixation in Spain beginning around 1812 with gigantic interest produced by the Christmas draw every year. In all honesty, 98% of the populace play this Spanish National lottery each Christmas.
There are a number of fundamental reasons why such countless Spanish nationals partake in the Christmas El Gordo draw. There, right off the bat, is the motivation of the greatest lotto prize fund of any worldwide lotto game - 2.20 Billion Euros! Also, there are in excess of 13,000 monetary rewards available. At last, the likelihood of scooping a monetary reward in the Christmas draw is a superb 1 out of 6.
With the amount of interest that is paid to the Christmas El Gordo lottery draw, lots of individuals are unaware that there are five more El Gordo draws consistently too. These occur in January, Walk, May, July and November. While these 5 games don't enjoy the gigantic prize fund of the Christmas game, they are significant regardless, ranging from 78 million Euros to 655 million Euros. Besides, these games offer about three fold the number of prizes as the Christmas draw and odds of getting a monetary reward of a hugely feasible 1 out of 3.
The Spanish Christmas Lottery works another way to virtually any remaining international lotteries. A total ticket 'billete' is extremely expensive, costing 200 Euros. However, these tickets are separated into ten 'decimos' (tenths) each costing 20 Euros. When buying your tickets you have the choice of buying one decimo, a total ticket, or a piece of a ticket. In the event that you don't buy the whole ticket, another person will purchase the rest of your ticket. For instance, assuming you purchase two decimos, somebody else buys three and another purchases five and your ticket wins 1000 Euros, then, at that point, you will win 200 Euros, 300 Euros and 500 Euros correspondingly. Because of the cost of buying a total ticket, it is commonplace for families and companions to bring together their lotto cash and every individual purchase a different 'decimo' (10th).
The odds of gathering a monetary reward in the El Gordo lottery are great and you never again must be an occupant of Spain to participate. You can now buy your Elgordo tickets from a selection of respectable web based lottery ticket deals agents paying little mind to where you reside worldwide. As a result, anybody can now delight in the fervor of this mammoth Spanish National lottery.

The Old Days
In the old days it stayed light until midnight and rain and snow came up from the ground rather than down from the sky. Women were easy. Every time you'd see one, two more would appear, walking toward you backwards as their clothes dropped. Money didn't grow in the leaves of trees but around the trunks in calf's leather money belts, though you could only take twenty bucks a day. Certain men flew as well as crows while others ran up trees like chipmunks. Seven Nebraska women were clocked swimming upstream in teh Missouri faster than the local spotted dolphins. Basenjis could talk Spanish but all of them chose not to. A few political leaders were executed for betraying the public trust and poets were rationed a gallon of Burgundy a day. People only died on one day a year and lovely choruses funneled out of hospital chimneys where every room had a field- stone fireplace. Some fishermen learned to walk on water and as a boy I trotted down rivers, my flyrod at the ready. Women who wanted love needed only to wear pig's ear slippers or garlic earrings. All dogs and people in free concourse became medium sized and brown, and on Christmas everyone won the hundred-dollar lottery. God and Jesus didn't need to come down to earth because they were already here riding wild horses every night and children were allowed to stay up late to hear them galloping by. The best restaurants were churches, with Episcopalians serving Provançal, the Methodists Tuscan, and so on. In those days the country was an extra two thousand miles wider, and an additional thousand miles deep. There were many undiscovered valleys to walk in where Indian tribes lived undisturbed though some tribes chose to found new nations in the heretofore unknown areas between the black boundary cracks betwen states. I was married to a Pawnee girl in a ceremony behind the usual waterfall. Courts were manned by sleeping bears and birds sang lucid tales of ancient bird ancestors who now fly in other worlds. Certain rivers ran too fast to be usable but were allowed to do so when they consented not to flood at the Des Moines Conference. Airliners were similar to airborne ships with multiple fluttering wings taht played a kind of chamber music in the sky. Pistol barrels grew delphiniums and everyone was able to select seven days a year they were free to repeat but this wasn't a popular program. In those days the void whirled with flowers and unknown wild animals attended country funerals. All the rooftops in cities were flower and vegetable gardens. The Hudson River was drinkable and a humpback whale was seen near the Forty-Second Street pier, its head full of the blue blood of the sea, its voice lifting the steps of people in their traditional anti-march, their harmless disarray. I could go on but won't. All my evidence was lost in a fire but not before it was chewed on by all the dogs who inhabit memory. One by one they bark at the sun, moon and stars trying to draw them closer again.

Today, December 22nd, is Spanish Christmas Lottery. Idk if I have any Spanish followers but for the rest of you, this is our most annoying Christmas tradition. Imagine bingo. With kids. Shouting like a song the numbers and prizes. For hours. And still I can’t not watch it. And I feel chills when they shout a big prize.
