Aight just a warning I'm pretty new to Tumblr and I'm DEFINITELY new to making AUs so I'm pretty nervous to post anything here but I figured I'd just rip the band-aid off.
FIRST POST HYPE!! :D
Anyways I love Mario and I love Undertale and I NEEDED TO COMBINE THEM LEGALLY so I decided to make an au about it! Dunno if I'm actually going to do anything serious with this, I mostly just want to imagine cute shenanigans with my favorite characters and whatnot, but who knows? Maybe I'll actually try to give this a proper plot
Tumblr media
So here's the basic info:
- Mario and Luigi, in the midst of trying to chase down Bowser, who has just kidnapped the princess again, somehow wind up far away from the Mushroom Kingdom and on Mt. Ebott. Where, of course, they fall into the underground.
- All the monsters are pretty much their canon counterparts (at least, my best interpretation of them 💀)
- Mario ends up discovering he has the power to reset/load/save/etc, but Luigi does not. This is because Mario has the most determination to get out of here and save the princess
- Toriel isn't quite as overprotective of them as she would be if they were a literal child like Frisk, but she is still very motherly towards them because it's just kinda who she is. She would probably be concerned about them potentially attacking the monsters so she might make them promise not to hurt anyone. I still don't think she would want them to leave because Asgore would take their souls
- Honestly mostly this is just an excuse for the Mario Bros and the Skelebros to hang out XD
- the thing that is really interesting is that Mario and Luigi are not 1, but 2 humans, which means only one of their souls would be needed to break the barrier. This ends up becoming a real issue but I could see it being resolved in a few ways.
1. one of the bros self sacrifices so the underground goes free (much to the dismay of the other, and also my heart would break haha)
2. They decide to just stay in the underground instead of going home (but they would be pretty sad about it because oh no their kingdom is still in danger
3. ??? IDK tbh
- Since Mario can load saves, he's just constantly in this angsty cycle of trying to keep his bro from getting killed off ;;
- Not sure if Mario could keep the resets secret for long since Flowey would taunt them about it, but he definitely would be pretty closed off about it, especially to Luigi. He does NOT want Luigi to know about the horrible things he's seen
-ofc cut to Luigi being confused as heck as to why Mario seems to already know what's going to happen.
- they have cute sweaters because I said so
Tumblr media
- not sure how omega fight would work, but either way Mario would have to fight to save both of them (probably all by himself :c)
- I want them to eventually do true pacifist but IDK how it would work so I'm not gonna think about it too hard rn
- Mario and Undyne having a friendly rivalry about who's the most heroic
- sans trying to convince them they could just stay in the underground and they're like "no we have to save the tiny mushroom people" and he's like "ur just like my bro fr"
- monster speculation about the purpose of mustaches
- It would be kinda funny if they had the firebrand and thunderhand since... Like... Humans aren't supposed to be able to do magic
- "are you sure you're humans? You're so small"
- *confused Italian noises*
Also here's some assorted doodles (I know the quality sucks 😭)

i dunno it kinda bothers me sometimes to see characters who are referred to with they/them pronouns in games described as "ambiguously gendered" or "gender left unclear" or "gender unstated" by fans and stuff like. yeah absolutely they are sometimes that. sometimes the creator had a gender in mind for them while creating them and just didn't think to talk about it in the game. but also, like. sometimes characters can just be nonbinary? and it makes me kinda sad that everyone's first reaction to they/them pronouns in games is "oh, they have a binary gender, it's just up to the player/not stated in-game".
#this is just something i was thinking about#after reading the ut localization book and seeing monster kid and onionsan described this way specifically#like. onionsan isn't really a big deal to me. they're just never talked about in the game.#i'm not treating them as Important Canon Nonbinary Rep because even though i use they/them for them#they're not canonically Anything.#monster kid is sort of the same deal? undyne uses they/them for them#and while it could be argued that she doesn't know them you could also argue they sneak out to follow her a lot#she could've met them before.#eh. it's a non-issue in this case really. at least they didn't describe napstablook that way#but honestly why are they so scared of saying 'nonbinary'. it's clear that that's what napstablook is#with the 'theirself' and all that#which. singular themself/theirself is not a word you see often in media at all!#it certainly wasn't when undertale came out! that was a pretty uncommon word in games!#so props to toby for featuring the first singular themself i ever saw in media and making me go 'woah'#but anyway. if you're curious. the lol book simply says#'the game refers to napstablook as 'them' not 'him' or 'her''#which. yeah! they're a them! but why do you act like this is some sort of narration quirk#and not just. a character being nonbinary.#i think that became pretty clear when the first few rounds of the undertale art book#came out and used he/him for them#but then someone asked toby about the pronoun difference#and he called them all back and changed their pronouns to they/them in the book once again.#honestly i. only vaguely remember hearing that so if someone has sources i'd love to see them#but like. why can't characters be nonbinary. why can't people just say nonbinary. it's not a scary word.

God I love Battle Against a True Hero. It's another one of those songs that are made out of parts of other songs (like Death by Glamour is), and just. Augh
(Disclaimer: I Do Not know the proper music terminology for stuff, apologies in advance dgsgsgf)
Battle Against a True Hero can be split into three main sections, beginning roughly at 0:00, 0:45, and 1:36 respectively.
youtube
I'm also going to throw the rest of this under a cut, because the analysis ended up EXTREMELY long lmao
----------
Where the first section comes from is obvious, so I'm not going to spend too much time on it. It's the Power of NEO leitmotif, which is also present in, well, Power of "NEO" (Mettaton NEO's battle theme), as well as BIG SHOT (Spamton NEO's battle theme) in Deltarune. It seems to be the usual melody for someone powering up beyond their normal capabilities, basically.
That second section, however, is actually from An Ending. Specifically starting at around the 1:01 mark of An Ending, lasting for the rest of the song.
youtube
(If you can't hear it, I actually first noticed it in Respite! Which, as a whole, is pretty much just another version of An Ending, but its version of the shared melody is closer to Battle Against a True Hero's than An Ending's is, being basically a slowed down version of it without any of An Ending's extra notes. It starts at around 0:36!)
Though actually, I'm gonna go on a bit of a tangent here and talk more about all of An Ending, because both of Undyne's battle themes are actually connected to it, and I'd argue that so is Undyne as a whole.
I believe it's already fairly well known that Ruins and the second half of Spear of Justice share a leitmotif. At a first glance, and just comparing those two songs, that doesn't make much sense! Undyne has nothing to do with the Ruins.
And that's because both songs are actually connected to An Ending, and are taking the leitmotif from that. The similarities between Ruins and Spear of Justice are the result of them branching off of the same root.
An Ending begins in the same way that Ruins does, just slower. Which I think is really neat!! We're coming full circle. The music that played in the first area in the game is now being played at the end of a Neutral route.
Thus, of course, the first minute or so of An Ending also bears a resemblance to the second part of Spear of Justice. And, additionally, An Ending itself can actually play in Undyne's fight too! Specifically, it plays after you kill her on the Neutral route, when her body has started to fall apart but she refuses to give in and keeps trying to fight you. Which I think might be the only time it plays outside of the Neutral Ending phone calls. So, that might be one reason Spear of Justice and An Ending share a melody; they both play in the same fight, so giving them some similarities might make the song transition smoother.
However! Undyne as a character is also very heavily connected to the various Neutral endings. I'd argue that she's actually the most important when it comes to determining the type of ending you get. I've seen people kind of argue before that that's Papyrus, but. No. I absolutely adore Paps, but the main thing his life or death changes is the manner in which the information in the phone call is presented to you. It either comes from someone who cares deeply about you as a friend basically unconditionally, who will always think positively of you no matter what you do, and thus will generally try to present things as positively as he can, no matter how bleak the situation actually is (though some of that also comes from him wanting to hide his sadness around Sans). Or, if Papyrus is dead, the information comes from someone who isn't as fond of you after everything you've done.
There's a hierarchy of sorts that decides who becomes the new leader of the Underground after Asgore, depending on who's alive. It goes Toriel > Undyne > Mettaton > Papyrus > Leaderless/Dog/Alphys. Undyne is the only character who can break this hierarchy, overthrowing Toriel, exiling her, and becoming the ruler herself, if you've caused her to hate humans enough by killing either Papyrus or just a lot of regular monsters from random encounters. Toriel can also be forced to step down by the general populace if Undyne has been killed, leaving the Underground leaderless.
And even among the endings where Toriel remains queen, the things Papyrus says to you change depending on the impression you've left on Undyne. Of course, if you've befriended her, you get the happy ending that will lead into True Pacifist after a reload! But if you didn't, then you get a separate ending. Or, if you did befriend her but then decided to betray her by killing someone in Hotland or later, then you'll get another ending, where Undyne hates you so much that even Papyrus doesn't want you to return to the Underground, out of concern for your safety (which is actually the only ending where he doesn't want you to come back!). Or, if you kill Mettaton, prompting Alphys to commit suicide, then she'll become utterly broken and depressed to the point that Papyrus is really concerned for her.
So, all in all, it feels fitting for even the music to show a connection between Undyne and the Neutral endings.
Extremely long tangent that probably should've been its own post over, dgdgsgsgf.
Battle Against a True Hero, of course, takes from a different section of An Ending than Spear of Justice or Ruins do. Respite (which plays at the end of the True Pacifist route, while everyone is on the cliff looking at the sunset) also does this, though I'm not sure if there's actually any sort of intended connection between Respite and Battle Against a True Hero. But I suppose you could say Undyne is fighting for respite, to put an end to your massacre of the Underground. And there's also something to be said about the contrast between the two wildly different routes.
But also, the fact that An Ending appears in Battle Against a True Hero at all. Ough. Undyne wants this to be an ending. She wants to kill you, to stop you from harming anyone more. In reality, though, this is only the midpoint of the run. Unless you decide to give up, you aren't anywhere near your ending yet. Perhaps that's why this section of Battle Against a True Hero is slightly different from An Ending, with it having certain notes omitted (aside from the fact that, with the faster pace, the smaller amount of notes probably sounds and flows better). It's An Ending, but not quite. Not for you. Not yet.
But you know who this is an ending for? Undyne.
Even in timelines where she succeeds in killing you, Undyne is as good as dead. She's already supposed to be dead at this point, and only came back through sheer Determination. But monster bodies can't handle such large amounts of Determination, and Undyne is no exception. Her Undying form is only temporary, and while it will last her long enough to fight you, she's going to die soon after, be it by your hand or by the inevitable destabilization of her form. This is Undyne's end, but she's going to do everything in her power to make sure she takes you down with her.
Additionally, the fact that this section isn't exactly the same as An Ending could be applied to Undyne herself as well. It is her ending, but not quite. Not yet. She's not ready to die, to just let you continue your rampage uninterrupted. She refuses to give in. In her Neutral route death, Undyne only really has one dangerous attack once you "kill" her. Thus, the actual, unchanged An Ending plays, because it is her end, and you will continue to survive, and there's nothing she can do about it. But here, in her Undying form, she at least has a Very Real chance of killing you and ensuring that the two of you die together. So while a version of An Ending plays, signalling her inevitable end, it's not quite the same, because she still has the power to end you too.
Finally, the last part might be a bit more of a stretch, but it resembles part of Alphys' theme (just called "Alphys")! Specifically at around 0:31. It's like Battle Against a True Hero took that section of Alphys' theme and expanded on it more.
youtube
Which. Augh! My heart. Undyne's doing all this, fighting so hard to stop you, in order to protect Alphys and everyone else living in Hotland and the capital (and even the humans beyond the Barrier, at this point). She cares So Much about everyone that Alphys even appears in her battle theme. They're all her fuel to keep fighting. She won't survive this battle, which she always knew could happen in her field of work and is why she never confessed her feelings to Alphys, but if she can at least save everyone else from meeting the same fate as those from Waterfall and before, then that'll be enough. This section represents the people she's fighting for.
And, as Undyne says once you land the killing blow on her, Alphys herself is watching the fight. She's working in the background, where you can't reach her, preparing an evacuation for everyone left in the Underground.
Even the order of the parts of Battle Against a True Hero creates a story of what Undyne's thoughts might be as the fight progresses.
It starts out with the Power of NEO leitmotif. Undyne's renewed energy and increased strength is on full display, ready to destroy you. The song starts out softer at first, as Undyne warms up, before both it and her attacks ramp up as more instruments are added and her power is further unleashed. The wind howls in the background.
Then, the song progresses into the An Ending section, though Power of NEO can still be heard as well. Undyne wants this fight to be the end of you and your murderous spree. This is supposed to be your ending. But as she continues to fight, perhaps she begins to think about how it's going to be an ending for her, too. Regardless of the outcome of the battle, she's not going to come out of it alive. Maybe she's even begun to feel the effects of her excess Determination already, but hides it.
And so she begins to think about Alphys, and while her attacks don't let up, the music softens. She thinks about Alphys. And she thinks about Asgore. And she thinks about everyone else in Hotland and beyond. And she knows she's never going to see them again. Did she even get the chance to say goodbye? Probably not. She probably wouldn't have wanted to entertain the thought of her losing outside of practicalities and backup plans; not out of a fear of death, but for others' sakes. Keep people's hopes up, promise them that she'll be fine.
But rather than let these thoughts break her down, they only serve to make her stronger. She's reminded of who she's fighting to protect, and the music ramps back up in accordance with that. She's the Hero of the Underground, and though her death is certain, she'll be damned if she's not going down without a fight. She's going to ensure that she's the last victim you ever kill, by taking you down with her.
It's SUCH a good song.

I was about to make a post about how much I love the ending where Undyne overthrows Toriel but specifically the version where Papyrus is still alive because I find the dynamic between Undyne hating humans and planning to enact another war and Papyrus staying behind in the Ruins when Toriel goes out to watch for humans and it being something he is genuinely very happy to do it VERY interesting because something something parallels between Toriel and Asgore and Papyrus and Undyne and continuing that cycle and all that but then I realized I was misreading the ending this entire time and Sans and Papyrus don't live with her they just visit her frequently 😭

Heartfell hcs?????
Heartfell !!! Heartfell !!!!!!
♡ Asgore is crazy!! This man coped with grief by developing a god complex (very normal reaction)
♡ Papyrus loves Mettaton, but he tries not to admit it too much, he draws a lot of inspiration from him and admires him so much
♡ ...which is super ironic given how much Mettaton hates himself. Sort of. It's complicated... At least he (used to) like his style so there's that..?
♡ Toriel has so much heart shaped kitchenware and decor and she tries so so hard to make herself and her home inviting, it's really a lovely place to live, trust her, stay, stay!
♡ Sans is always sweaty because his damn coat makes him so so hot but Papyrus picked out his outfit so he keeps it on, lest he disappoint him and make him think he doesn't find it completely and totally cool and fashionable
♡ Alphys is somehow both more and less insecure than usual Fell style AUs because she has more of an influence in popular underground culture, which gives her a leg up in being more socially accepted, but at the same time, she's well aware how much others are growing to resent the way their world is, and struggles with taking that personally (despite they mostly hate the parts she has very little to do with)
♡ Undyne still regularly has tea with Asgore despite the uh, rough patch they had in the early days of her becoming captain
♡ Flowey has definitely gotten good at playing the game, so to speak, but he’s become incredibly resentful of it all. It's so horribly fake, it's like slathering pink paint and heart stickers over rotting boards and he can't stand being around others for very long, even Papyrus...
♡ Unrelated, but unfortunately he does still have a lot of nostalgia for the heart shaped strawberry rolls Toriel used to make
♡ Grillby, while still fitting in seamlessly, is one of the few who doesn't go out of his way to conform too thoroughly. No one really questions it
♡ Papyrus has a shawl the Snowdin Innkeeper crocheted for him when he was still fairly young. It's more an infinity scarf now, and he won't let anyone else see it, but he holds it very dear to himself as possibly one of the only sincere gifts he’s ever received
♡ Doggo is actually completely blind! He relies heavily on sound and smell, and even though most others dislike the lieutenant, he can't help but have a soft spot for him since he’s one of the few fellow guards who doesn't underestimate him
♡ NCG is actually something akin to a drug dealer, and him and Sans have developed a slight rapport since Sans buys his "cigars" from him. Wouldn't exactly call them friends, but it's...nice to have a guy you don't feel you have to be as careful with appearances around

MINI THEORY: A Holiday Hero
It's no secret there's a lot of Deltarune stuff in Undertale. But one of the less explored avenues is the Undyne the Undying fight.
Having Delta Rune imagery on her armor is one thing, but there's a lot more to it: "The wind is howling," the ocean sounds and heartbeat in "But The Earth Refused To Die," the titular Earth mentioned again in "Heroine reformed by her own DETERMINATION to save Earth," even Undyne's interlaced phase-in which matches the Deltarune title.
But one thing that's interested me is a particular bit of music.
youtube
The first melody (brought to my attention by Patton-the-Zorua) starts at 0:00, and seems to be some sort of "NEO" motif, as it's used in "Power of NEO" and "BIG SHOT."
The second melody starts at 0:44, and is the "Ruins" melody.
But the third and most mysterious melody begins at 1:35.
youtube
As far as i'm aware, this melody stands out for a few reasons.
1: Subjectively, this motif is given a very striking solo, almost as if we're supposed to recognize it, in a similar way to the use of the "Determination" motif in "ASGORE."
2: Objectively, i'm pretty sure that the "snowflake-like" bullet pattern (see video above) cannot appear until this melody has begun to play, in a similar way to Asriel only using plain fire magic until the beat drop in "Hopes and Dreams."
3: To my knowledge, this melody does not appear anywhere else across the games.
This begs the question of what this melody is supposed to represent.
And in my opinion, one group of characters jumps to mind.
If we consider that this melody only appears for the first time in conjunction with these "snowflake-like" bullets, backed by an acoustic guitar harmony, and especially using sleigh bells as a very noticable percussion... i think it's worth considering if any of the Holidays are somehow connected to this fight.
Noelle and her mother are both associated with ice/snow and "cold." Dess is associated with an acoustic guitar. And all four of them could be associated with sleigh bells, particularly Noelle, who has them in "Girl Next Door" and "noelle.ogg". Does this motif belong to any of them?
youtube
Maybe it's a stretch. After all, there's no trace of the Holidays in the particular Undertale universe we visit, nor any reason we know of to explain why they'd be helping Undyne; and a new melody existing could be just that: a new melody specifically for this fight, unrelated to any other characters.
But there certainly seems to be more to the Undying the Undying fight than meets the eye, and it seems likely the answers lie in Deltarune. Could one of the Holidays be the missing link?
