Succulents Part 10--Tradescantia

Succulents are a wide variety of plants, spanning multiple orders. Some have succulent leaves while others have succulent stems. Cactuses are succulents, but not all succulents are cactuses. Defining what exactly makes a succulent is a little tricky. For example, cabbage leaves are considered by some to be succulent, but tulip and onion leaves apparently aren't.

Spiderwort leaf shapes can vary a lot between species, but the flower shape is pretty similar: fuzzies in the middle and three petals. About half of these were taken in my grandmother's garden, and the other half (the bluer ones) from mine. Mine is a native species of course: Tradescantia ohiensis (Ohio spiderwort), which has edible parts but I haven't tried it yet. Spiderworts are stem succulents.

Murdannia loriformis. Photographed this flower to help identify it. The flowers are very small - about 8 mm diameter and have interesting filaments which I would never have noticed without the aid of photography. Thanks to Alan Gregg, Christian Choret and Marco Pellegrini for helping me label it correctly
