In 1815, Mount Tambora erupted; it was the largest volcanic event in recorded human history, and affected the climate so profoundly that the following year became known as “the Year Without a Summer.” During the dreary summer months of 1816, a young woman and her lover traveled to the mansion of Lord Byron, the Villa Diodati, to meet Byron and another friend, John Polidori. The year without a summer having rendered lakeside sport and leisure impossible (or, in any case, undesirable), the four spent days inside the mansion, regaling each other with stories of the uncanny. Those fateful days would spawn two of the most foundational works of horror in the English canon — the first was Polidori’s The Vampyre. The composition of the second demands further elaboration.

The young woman, scarcely 18, a daughter of two famous and controversial political radicals, found herself struggling to create stories at will. She walked the halls of the mansion alone at night, wracking her brain for inspiration, turning over and over a philosophical problem which would consume her during that grey summer: the question of “galvanism,” whether “perhaps a corpse could be re-animated.” from On June 16, 1816, just past 2AM, she was set upon by the “grim terrors” of a “waking dream:”

“I saw the pale student of unhallowed arts kneeling beside the thing he had put together. I saw the hideous phantasm of a man stretched out, and then, on the working of some powerful engine, show signs of life, and stir with an uneasy, half vital motion. Frightful must it be; for supremely frightful would be the effect of any human endeavour to mock the stupendous mechanism of the Creator of the world.”

This waking dream would lead to one of the most celebrated works of Gothic literature ever written, and a foundational work of science fiction. Its dreamer was Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, and her novel was Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus.
