I have a headcanon that lucas refuses to leave max’s room. He’s technically not allowed to stay over night because it’s past visiting hours and he’s not family. But he keeps trying to sneak in or find a way to stay late without anyone noticing. Sometimes Max’s mom will be there and if she sees him she’ll try to convince the hospital staff to let him stay longer. She feels bad for Lucas and she’s taken a real liking to him. All of Max’s family has. Because whenever anyone comes to visit they always see Lucas and he’s so polite and they notice he’s by Max’s side whenever he can be. He gets to meet her dad when he flies out to visit Max and he’s so nervous and also feels like crying because Max was supposed to introduce them like she always said she would.

He isn’t often able to stay the night but he still tries whenever he can. Nights are the worst because he gets so many nightmares. They’re still bad in the hospital but at least he can wake up and see Max. Most nights he can’t even sleep because he’s afraid he’ll wake up to the news that Max has slipped away completely. Or he’s afraid she’ll wake up and he won’t be there.

Erica struggles on the nights Lucas is gone. She would never admit it to anyone, especially Lucas, but ever since Creel house she gets night terrors. She put a night light back in her room because she’s terrified of the dark. And when Lucas is gone she gets this terrible feeling that something bad is going to happen to him. So some nights Erica will tag along. She’ll claim to be doing it so Lucas doesn’t have to be alone, and this is partly true, but she also does it from fight back her own fears. Sometimes a nurse or Max’s mom will come in to find the Sinclair siblings sleeping in two chairs next to Max’s bed. Lucas holding Max’s hand in one of his and Erica’s hand in the other.
