The CEO of Stability AI stated on Discord that he believes artists who oppose AI are arguing for “skill segregation” and compared artists rejecting the use of AI to denying people the right to learn to read. 

I don’t even know how to attack this argument because it’s so profoundly absurd. It can’t even possibly be made in good faith, right? This person has to know that.

No one is stopping anyone from creating art. But you can’t learn how to do ANYTHING without going through the proper learning process. I mean you can’t even learn to read without, you know, learning how to read. 

I am terribly sorry that you’ve spent your life undervaluing art so vitriolically while I spent my life learning how to draw. But that doesn’t give you the right to take from those of us who HAVE spent our whole life learning just because you have a new little toy to play with. 

And honestly, no one would have cared had you not decided to try to use AI-generated images to turn a profit. To make and sell a comic book. A children’s book. To elbow artists out of using their talents to create painted book covers. 

You CAN draw. You are not incapable. And we are all encouraging you to sit down at a table with a pencil and learn. No one is stopping you, and that’s the point you refuse to understand. 

We would love more people in the world who value art. You DON’T value art. You value the profit you can hoard by stealing the hard work of other people. 

IE: capitalism.
