Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society is kind of a hot mess. It has two plotlines that barely connect, despite their stubborn insistence that they do. I know SAC is all about smaller investigations ballooning into bigger ones over bigger issues, at least in the arcs, but this one doesn't really hold together that well. You do get to see Section 9 do what they do best, but you won't actually understand why when you watch this. It just seemed like an excuse to do more SAC without any coherent narrative. Ah well. The Tachikomas are there. Sorta.

Notable And Underrated Anime That Have Excellent English Dubs, In My Opinion - A List (With Some Extra Banter or Whatever)
The works of Shinichirō Watanabe, ranging from Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Space Dandy, and Carole & Tuesday (so much so that they're better off disqualified from lists likes this, due to being way too obvious choices... moving on)
FLCL (heck, would even say the same to the otherwise derivative Progressive and Alternative)
The Read or Die OVA, alongside its sequel series R.O.D the TV (so good, that even the likes of Yomiko "The Paper" Readman changing accents actually doesn't feel as jarring as I thought it would be)
Azumanga Daioh (on a side note, Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga sounds a bit like Steven Universe's Amethyst and The Owl House's Vee Noceda; can't really say why)
Lucky Star (so, which part of the Choco cornets should we eat first?)
Nichijou ('nuff said)
K-On!/K-On!! (might sound a bit jarring if one also watched Puella Magi Madoka Magica on the English dub (a bit good, but nothing compared to the Rebellion movie and maybe the compilation films; case in point, Mio Akiyama, Ritsu Tainaka, Tsumugi Kotobuki, and Azusa Nakano are Homura Akemi, Kyubey, -bloody- Hitomi Shizuki, and Madoka Kaname respectively)
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan (kinda sucks that the two compilation movies don't have dubs; would have loved seeing the extra hamminess of the characters' English voices in those)
Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water - ADV (even if the occasional accents are inaccurate, the emotional delivery of the VAs is hard to deny, especially the vile Gargoyle's)
Kill la Kill (if one has witnessed it, then you know that they sure had a lot of fun playing the characters in this extremely fun gainaxy romp)
Toradora! (...basically the closest we get to seeing Madoka verbally beat down Kyubey in romance and stuff)
Ghost in the Shell, both the movie duology (1 and 2: Innocence) and Stand Alone Complex, including the Tachikomatic Days extras and the Solid State Society movie (so much so that the latter's DVDs are mostly set with the English dub on default, reportedly even in Japan)
REDLINE (can't speak enough for it so to describe its epicness)
Dead Leaves (you can actually watch it on YouTube... it might overwhelm you)
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt (telling that it's way more raunchy than even the original Japanese)
Golden Boy (you know, at least the show didn't continue on, lest it might have gotten way too weirder like the manga it's adapted from)
Black Lagoon (so good, that it resulted with the Roberta's Blood Trail OVAs having the cast reprise their roles due to fan demand)
Excel Saga and Puni Puni Poemy (so madcap, the former's titular character's VA broke her voice halfway through the show)
Honorable mentions:
Neon Genesis Evangelion - particularly the ADV dub, with Manga Entertainment's efforts on The End of Evangelion and the Director's Cut versions of Episodes 21-24 (it might be correctly deemed as flawed, but nowadays, it sure has proven its worth, albeit at the cost of the Netflix dub being derided as lacking in emotion and perhaps also nuance)
The Manga Entertainment dubs for the Patlabor movie duology (a shame the OVA series preceding it doesn't share the same cast, while the Patlabor TV series dub... eludes me)
GaoGaiGar (flaw: it's unfinished, and thus never even reached the FINAL parts)
In the meantime, hopeful readers, feel free to put on personal recommendations, in case there'll be a second part, if not a commenter's edition.

I’ve heard mixed things about ghost in the cell stand alone complex. I understand that it’s not as iconic as the movie, but is it still good?
GitS:SAC (both seasons, they're very similar) is definitely the second best thing to ever come out of GitS, and yeah, it's quite good. I'd even go as far as to say that it's the "real" GitS, because the original movie is mostly Oshii doing his thing. SAC strikes the balance between the schlocky manga (no, having a lot of text does not make anything not schlock and I WILL die on this hill) and the fairly highbrow movie - call it tasteful pulp, if you will. Production values are high, the music is fantastic (Yoko Kanno's best work in my opinion), and the writing varies between solid and excellent. The movie is in an entirely different league (that being the best movies of all time, period), but SAC is still the gold standard for an anime cyberpunk TV show.
As for the rest: We don't talk about Innocence, and we don't talk about Arise either. We do talk (shit) about 2045. Solid State Society is more or less a retelling of the movie with the SAC attitude - it's not bad, but I'd call it inessential when you could just watch '95 instead.

💎⭐ Motoko Kusanagi ⭐💎 The Motoko Kusanagi Movie & Series shelf 🖥 I set up the shelves at the beginning of September 2022 but never released the pictures so here they are. Took a while to get the tools and setting up the shelves wasn't too difficult just needed the right marks to make them look as perfect. I accomplished all those things. Love the art covers for each set it sets the mood for each movie and series. This shelf is on the right side of the room whereas the shrine is on the left side. I enjoy how the shelf is set up and maybe in the future, I'll add a third shelf since I have an extra shelf. I also want one Motoko Kusanagi figure and maybe Diana but I have a Funko Pop figure of hers. Ranging from The Stand Alone Complex series 1st & 2nd Gig. Then the Solid State Society Movie. 1st Gig has Motoko holding a gun while a Tochokoma is behind her. 2nd Gig has Motoko Kusanagi between the conflict. SSS only has Motoko as the artwork The second shelf has The 1995 movie in Ghost In The Shell with Motoko diving down the skyscraper as she disappears. The second case is the set of 1st & 2nd Gig of Motoko diving down as well but with the SAC universe. The last movie on the shelf is Innocence which has Motoko lying as a huge object behind her. . . ❄❄🎆🎊🎐🀄🎈🎈🎉🎋✨🎋🎉🎈🎈🀄🎐🎊🎆❄❄ 🔺 ` • ♾ • Follow . ` ° • ❗• My Collection . °.` 〽 • Like and share . °. ` • 🟣 • Enjoy my Lady Tsunade post!!! 🔻 . ❄❄🎆🎊🎐🀄🎈🎈🎉🎋✨🎋🎉🎈🎈🀄🎐🎊🎆❄❄ Tags🔹||| #motokokusanagi #motoko #animecollection #animecollections #animepictures #animepicture #cyberpunkaesthetic #cyberpunk #ghostintheshell #animewaifu #anime🌸 #ghostintheshelledit #anime #animephoto #fypanime #animeaesthetic #animecollectibles #standalonecomplex #animepage #animecollector #ghostintheshellstandalonecomplex #ghostintheshellanime #animestatues #animefigurephotography #anntakamakipersona5 #animefigures ||| (at Shrine Way Of Lights) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm-X_XWJLSl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Ghost in the Shell (Final Thoughts)
For as long as I have been doing anime watches (albeit since 2013 as a monthly ordeal), my range of genres usually fall within one of three things: magical girl, fantasy/adventure, or music-based (including idols). Dubs are not my cup of tea (since I have grown up seeing localized versions of certain anime titles growing up from Toonami, Jetix, and 4Kids). In recent years, however, I wanted to start looking into older or more mature titles as the age of 30 is quickly approaching my way.
Luckily, there was one dub I recall fondly from my early adulthood that was due for a rewatch.
Tumblr media
Note: For this special "final thoughts", I'll only focus on the dub version of Stand Alone Complex, 2nd GIG, and Solid State Society. The 1995 movie is an alternate telling of the manga, which I do not wish to relive that experience. On the other hand, let's not EVEN go near the 2017 live action movie starring Scarlett Johansson because no, absolutely not. That can go back to the burning barrel where it came from. With that being said, let's get on to the post.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
To be brief:
Prior to rewatching this, I never knew of a second English dub that was done around the time Bandai's dub aired. Apparently, Animax did a version, in which Motoko Kusanagi's VA and a couple of others were changed.
It dawned on me that there was a meaning between "stand alone" and "complex" episodes. The term "stand alone" refers to an episode that has NO ties with the main plot of the "Laughing Man Incident of 2024". "Complex" episodes do involve this main plot.
My feelings about the whole "Laughing Man" ordeal was awkward. The previous times I watched this, my head could not wrap around who really was the "Laughing Man". Even after the eighth time, I STILL CANNOT believe Aoi may have been the culprit, when they keep assuming the whole "Laughing Man" idea may have never been a person at all.
That climax...still got chills from those last several episodes. It was such a fucking hellfire at first, but it did tie loose ends pretty well near the end of the season.
Oh, and that iconic opening sequence; one of the best openings to execute CGI in the year 2002 like it was cakewalk. There will never be another song as eerily yet fascinating as [inner universe] by the late Origa (bless her vocals, damn it).
TACHIKOMAS
Oh, and Catcher in the Rye was referenced (one of the books that inspired this series)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (2nd GIG)
Once again, there are three different sets of episode variants: dual (which involves the Individual Eleven as well as the CIS/Gouda arc), dividual (episodes that are independent from the two main arcs, but could have some relevance), and individual (obviously, the Individual Eleven plot-heavy episodes).
Personally, I loved this season a little more for having better writing, slightly better CGI, and a ton of mature/political themes.
The animation can be a bit (and I mean it's very subtle) wonky or off-model, but that did not bother me much during the exposition scenes.
The second OP is great, but not as iconic as the first.
[Spoiler alert], you may want to shield yourself from trauma, but that scene was shocking yet violently executed in a way you'd want to read into the lore as to what made them do it in the first place.
You thought last season's finale was crazy? How about [spoiler alert] getting [spoilers] while trying to stop a [redacted]? Even I still cannot believe the writers decided to go there.
Solid State Society
Frankly, this is the first time seeing the movie; only one thing comes to my head.
Human trafficking (mainly children abduction) being the focus of this antagonist's scheme. Not to mention hacking was involved to minimize the damage when in reality, it's a HUGE freaking deal. It's kind of like...seeing a beehive nestled on the side of someone's house. You think it's not gonna be so difficult to remove, until you notice the bees somehow got into the walls (probably a small crack that wasn't patched up when it was originally constructed) and you find tons of honeycombs plaguing the whole inside of that wall.
(I was not using the glacier anecdote as that is too obvious).
Now, the awkward thing about this movie was how the writers kinda pulled a slight twist to the perpetrator's intentions.
Usually, my perspectives on villains is usually the typical "boo, hiss, dni" ordeal. However, this guy's intention was fueled by several factors:
rising unemployment rates
low birth rate
excessive child abuse rates
rising geriatric population (Noble Rot Senior Citizen)
So, I get what this dude was trying to fight for, but his motives were illegal. Was he a sick son of a bitch? Yeah, for the actions.
Although, I will give the writers damn good credit for tackling subjects like these, because even the topic of a broken healthcare system was alluded (these citizens at end-of-life stage dealing with such poor attention by the system).
Conclusion
Overall, how much more praise could I give to something as exceptional as the Ghost in the Shell dub?
As I have said before, not many English dubs stand out to me more than this. The story, concept, world building, and development are all top tier quality that leave thought-provoking questions to be taken into consideration. Production I.G., Gainax, and these other studios who contributed to the series did such a stellar job creating an adaptation that may still be ahead of its time (for now).
If you're up for some drama, suspense, heavy imagery/themes and a damn good time, I HIGHLY recommend just watching the SAC era of Ghost in the Shell (2005-2008) in its Bandai dub.
You will thank me later.
Tumblr media
----------
Before I announce the next review, let me extend some kudos to the late Origa, who lost her battle to lung cancer back in 2015. Part of my adolescence/adulthood was listening to both OPs constantly, mainly [inner universe], which still leaves a chilling, yet beautiful phenomenon to this day. Rarely (and I seriously mean rarely) do I listen to any Russian/English new age. May her legacy continue to be remembered through her contribution to this anime and her other projects.
----
Coming up in a few days, I will be releasing my "Final Thoughts on Toradora!" There are some loose ends I need to get to before I can fully give this my two cents. Until then, stay tuned.
