If you’ve been to one of my exhibitions/shows, you’ll have seen (and hopefully scanned!) my stitched QR code and possibly questioned my sanity…but I’m not the only one - there are more of us out there…😂 . @thedesigntrust posted a code stitched by @stitchkitscrafts earlier today (thanks to @rugbyartistsandmakers for the heads-up!), and my customers have told me about their personal QR projects too - with all those little squares, it’s definitely something that lends itself well to #crossstitch 🔲🪡🔲 . Free QR code generators can be found through your search engine of choice, then choose your colour/s and off you go! High contrast colours work best - I found black a little too stark for my colour palette so went with a dark navy blue, but I’ve also seen everything from bright red to turquoise and leaf green to rich terracotta…🟥🟧🟨🟩🟦🟪 . So grab a scrap of linen and your favourite colour and start combining tech with thread 🤩 . To see and test out my version, I’m back at @artatthealex this weekend along with a whole plethora of talented folk (separate post with all the details to follow) - and my cute QR code! . Distractions...I love running my own business everyday I walk into the studio smiling and full of inspiration. But the CEO vs artist is sometimes in conflict and that's why this year I've been taking part in @thedesigntrust strategic away days to improve focus on the key stuff and and this last quarter I also signed up to an accountability group where I've met fantastic fellow creatives whom I've learnt so much and importantly ensure I take action - kind of like getting my homework done. My intentions are to build my brand and thus I share with you my September actions. I have a story to tell.
👉The most important work of my career as an artist appeared a couple of years ago at the @cruelandcurious Sanctuary exhibition. People still mention it to me when they see me. 👉I was raw. I built a small room. I painted and wrote things that were very personal, very confessional (think death, blow jobs, abuse, petty thoughts). Confrontational, but proved relatable. I had willing people write their own confessions onto slips of paper and submit them anonymously. I have read but not judged any of them. I sold a lot of work. 👉Fast-forward many months… I am struggling. It’s not a secret that I suffer from various mental health issues and some of you will click away now and that’s fine. Totally cool. You do you, boo. Me? I have struggled and keep coming back to something Patricia (@thedesigntrust) said at one of her talks: Be Marmite. I am not your pretty instagram artist. I am not going to make you feel ok when the world is burning. I am Marmite… I make shit people either like or hate, and that’s totally fine. 👉I have things I need (increasingly) to get out of my head and express. They might be acerbic, unpleasant, and politically challenging (OH NO DID SHE SAY POLITICAL), but I am making myself crazy(crazier) by keeping it all in. 👉I can make commercial stuff, sure. I can make cute things, I LIKE CUTE. 😸👉But… Did you know I gave up visual arts for writing for awhile? I did. I have always written, but I thought my visual ideas too unpalatable for art so I started writing with more intensity. I am an ok writer, but I am - in recent years - a much better visual artist, so I have been making things that get my thoughts out more and more. 👉Tonight, I hit an “honesty point” (I cried) with needing to express words on canvas alongside splashes of colour. I am probably running out of caption space on a photo, so I’ll shut up now, but know that I - Jen, aged 47, am entering a new period of not-giving-a-fuck and will probably become (even more) Marmite. Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater designed in 1935. One of my goals on the @thedesigntrust Dream Plan and Do program was to try a new medium. I chose watercolours. I thought it would be very interesting to try the architectural buildings I would have otherwise done graphically with watercolours. If you’ve been following my story, you might have seen me drop the name “project mossweaver” here and there. It’s a 90 day goal I set up thanks to the awesome planner for creatives called DreamPlanDo by @thedesigntrust. The idea is to make a juicy goal to work on for 90 days - juicy in the sense that you get excited, motivated & all-around pumped with the idea of accomplishing it. As a freelancer, I realized at the end of 2017 that a lot of my time was getting eaten up by admin, accounting, emails, Etsy shop maintenance, & computer work, and that the most important part of my job – drawing, improving my skills & creating new work - was taking a serious leap towards the backseat. It was taking a serious toll - I was losing my sense of purpose, my creative spark was withering away, & I was feeling more & more like a failure every day. So I decided to battle that with my 90 day goal of reintegrating drawing into my daily routine, at least 5 days a week. 3 months later, I’m super happy & proud to say that I accomplished that goal & can see the difference, not only in my work but also in my mindset. I’ve made a bunch of new drawings; I’ve been getting better every day at the things I struggled with like perspective & anatomy; I created my 3rd self-published zine Hidden Hills, a story about traveling inwards to find the hidden hills & quiet creatures that live within us; I’ve signed an illustration contract for a book getting published in June; and, most of all, I’ve refound my sense of purpose. I believe in the power of small things. I believe in the power of kindness, to ourselves and to others. I believe in the capacity of art to make us grow & change & become better people, by speaking to the emotional parts of ourselves that need so much love and care in a world that is sometimes cruel. I believe in the power of beauty that exists in all things, even in the dark, which we so often shun and shy away from. But when we turn towards it, when we embrace those parts we’d rather not see, that’s when the tiny fragile creatures that live in the darkness can finally come out to tell us all the beautiful things they’ve learned.
