Note
What words do you describe Star Ruby's personality?
I'd describe Star Ruby as having attitude above all else-- she's rebellious and headstrong, and loves feeling powerful. She's cocky, energetic, and full of fire.

Star Ruby - A Deconstruction
In a previous post, I briefly compared the Star Ruby and the LBRP.
Today I'd like to delve a little deeper into Star Ruby as a standalone ritual.
It would provide little value to you for me to simply type out instructions on the ritual. Instead, please take a moment to read through Star Ruby as posted on Hermetic Library. This is the Liber XXV edition, not the Book of Lies edition (which will not be covered in this post).
Let's break down the ritual into its five components:
The Qabalistic Cross
This is an entirely different Qabalistic Cross than that found in the LBRP.
Let's start at the top. The initial call, "APO PANTOS, KAKODAIMONOS", is a warning for undesired energies to vacate of their own accord before being banished.
The rest of the Qabalistic Cross roughly translates to a recognition of the Divine Presence, the Earthly Presence, the Active Force, and the Passive Force. It equilibriates the magician's energies.
One last note: the final call, "IAO", is multilayered. It is the Greek transliteration of the Tetragrammaton, which identifies the call with the Ineffable Name and Supreme Deity. It is also a magical formula of creation, destruction, and recreation.
I simply cannot do "IAO" justice in the scope of this post. Maybe I'll make another one later that goes into more detail. In the meantime, I encourage you to check into the correspondences; they're highly interesting.
The Casting of the Pentagrams
There are again marked differences between the Pentagrams of the LRP and of Star Ruby. Instead of retreading previous ground, I'm going to detail the meanings behind each movement and call.
Let's start with the Pentagrams. They are red for Qabalistic reasons that I will not cover here. They are imagined on the forehead while the magician makes the Fire Sign of Thoum-Aeth-Neith, then cast out into the ritual space with the Sign of Horus (the Enterer). The magician treads the ritual space counterclockwise to reinforce the ritual's banishing energies.
The four calls, "Therion", "Nuit", "Babalon", "Hadit", are deities in Thelema. Their placement at the East, North, West, and South (respectively) are partially to balance each other out. Therion and Babalon are opposite each other, as are Nuit and Hadit.
Without much help from Crowley--as he believed it "would be improper to comment further upon an official ritual..."--magicians have debated the placement of these deities for nearly a century.
Here are my personal beliefs, from my notes:
Therion is the primal instinct, the divine force of desire, and masculine sexual force. To invoke him first is to integrate these baser instincts into the Great Work.
Nuit is the infinite expanse of space and limitless possibility. To invoke her next is to transcend and connect to Universal energy.
Babalon is the ecstatic, transformative, and feminine sexual force. To invoke her next is to descend into passion, creativity, and transformation.
Hadit is the infinitely small point that represents individual consciousness and distinct shape. To invoke him last is to integrate the individual will with the True Will.
This is not the only set of meanings or correspondences. For more information, please consult this Thelemapedia page for a starting point.
The Signs of N.O.X.
The signs of N.O.X. represent the movement of the Magician through the Night of Pan--an allegory for ego-death and the mystical union with the All, symbolized here by the god Pan.
In all, there are five signs that the magician makes through this section. Please see this Thelemapedia page for images of all the ritual signs.
Personally, I perform the signs in this order, while saying the following:
Puer (Boy): "N"
Vir (Man): "O"
Puella (Girl): (Silent)
Mulier (Woman): "X, NOX. (vibrate) IO PAN"
Mater Triumphans (Triumhpant Mother): (Silent)
I have seen some forms that switch Vir and Puella, such that you make the signs of Boy and Girl before Man and Woman. It is a valid switch, but I like to stick to the original order because it allows you to build and realize each aspect fully without interruption.
Mater Triumphans is the final ritual sign, representative of union with the Godhead.
This means that the full sequence of signs represents a full realization of the magician's masculine and feminine aspects before uniting and transcending them as part of the Great Work. It builds the bridge between the Pentagrams and the Chaldean Calls, which are both invocations of sorts.
The Chaldean Calls
Instead of Archangels as in the LRP, the Star Ruby invokes Divine Principles of the Second Order from the Chaldean Oracles of Zoroaster.
Mouthful, right?
According to Sabazius, the correspondences perform the following for the Divine Will:
Junges: initiate
Teletarchai: maintain
Synoches: perfect
Daimones: execute
This is pretty self explanatory, but I'd like to extend these correspondences a little bit.
The Junges are before the magician because they clear the mind and direct it towards the Great Work.
The Teletarchai are behind the magician because they provide the support needed (i.e., they "have your back").
The Synoches are at the right hand because they bind and control; the right hand symbolizes conscious authority and power.
The Daimones are at the left hand because they are subconscious and intuitive; the left hand symbolizes the receptive and unconscious as a counterbalance to the consciousness of the right hand.
To call upon these forces is to essentially remind oneself of the Great Work, align with it, and balance the severe and merciful approaches to accomplishing it.
The Qabalistic Cross, Reprise
Simply repeat the Qabalistic Cross from the start of the ritual, except instead of performing the "APO PANTOS KAKODAIMONOS" call at the beginning, the magician performs it at the end. This is because it is the final statement of banishing. Unlike the first performance--which is more of an invitation--this is a punctuated command that declares the space clean.
I know this has been a long deep-dive, but I thought it would be nice to codify some thoughts that had been rolling around in my head for a while. I have to really understand what I'm doing to get any benefit from a magical working, so hopefully this will help those out there like me.
Thank you for reading. Stay safe, and Blessed Be~

Don’t worry Steven Universe fans, I bring, well, maybe not what you wanted, but Steven universe content nonetheless!
Tis more of my Ocs!
Midnight diamond, she/he/they
Kiwi (green pearl) and Star (Star Ruby), she/her and she/her, partners who fled to earth to hide from their Emerald.
Emerald, she/her, the old owner of Kiwi and Star.
Aqua (Aquamarine) and Rosalind (Rosewater Pearl), she/they and she/they, two lovers who fled to earth, before Aqua was shattered in the great gem war.
I just wanted to doodle some Ocs.
