So one thing I thought about after the finale was how Starfleet revealed a Protostar-class ship, but by the 32nd century, during Seasons 3 and 4 of Discovery, there were none. After the Burn, as long as they weren’t affected, a ship with a protodrive would have been really helpful to the Federation. So I have 3 theories as to what happened to the Protostar-class ships between the events of Prodigy and the events of the last two seasons of Discovery:
1) Starfleet decided to retire them/not make them anymore. They are awfully dangerous if the protostars breach containment, after all. They could have easily decided to retire them after a few catastrophic incidents
2) The Protostar-class ships were affected by the Burn somehow and exploded with the rest of Starfleet’s dilithium-powered ships
3) After the Burn, the Protostar-class ships did survive but then in the 100 years in between the Burn and the Discovery arriving in the future something happened to them that made them unusable or they went supernova and Starfleet didn’t have the resources to make another one

Yes, the world is often still a terrifying nightmare for queer people.
But.
Spring 2024 served up a full season of Ava & Deborah in Hacks S3, the always delightful Abbot Elementary for its S3, and Ncuti Gatwa Fifteenth Doctor kissing Jonathan Groff on Doctor Who.
Summertime delivered Poolverine in Deadpool 3, a season of excellence with Interview with the Vampire S2, the killer finales of Umbrella Academy and Star Trek: Discovery, the continued successor to She Ra & Steven Universe in My Adventures with Superman S2, a taste of a future queerer Bridgerton in S3, the interracial interabled lesbian wedding of the year in The Dragon Prince S6, and House of the Dragon blowing up the internet for two months gay with its wonderful shenanigans—from the sept scene, to GNC-coded Rhaenyra kissing Mysaria, to Alicent going full Virginia Woolf on a MF & then proposing elopement in a 4 AM break-in.
Spooky season has the return of Jac Schaeffer to the WandaVision fam—Billy Maximoff, Teddy Altman (who he’s explicitly dating) & a bevy of PEAK lesbian activity in Agatha All Along, coming out (ha) within a month of Heartstopper S3, and the series finales of What We Do In The Shadows and Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Then, we’ll close out the year with Harlivy in Harley Quinn S5, Lady Gaga as Harley in a musical in Folie a Deux, and MF-live action WICKED PT. 1.
And this isn’t even it, y’all. This doesn’t include countless anime, cartoons, and queer shows that are gaining ground now that they’re streaming (Kevin Can F**k Himself, ILYSM).
No, it isn’t perfect. Yes, I want more and better representation. (Especially for sapphics, BIPOC queers, disabled queers, trans and GNC folks.)
But there are reasons for hope. We are moving in the right direction. 🏳️‍🌈❤️

It’s weird, and I’m not sure how to articulate this, but I think the character of Captain Rayner is something of an…olive branch to a certain type of fan. The older, whiter, male-r side of the Trek fandom (not me) has been super critical of Discovery, probably because they’re worried that Trek has passed them by (sometimes me). It would have been easy for the Discovery team to make Rayner a spite character, make him an arrogant, witless jackass, a parody of the haters. Instead, they make him a competent smart, captain who’s admittedly never spent a single second with a ship’s counselor. Kind of impulsive, can’t and won’t play politics, but steady in a crisis, and committed to his mission. More importantly, they make Captain Burnham recognize his better traits and invite him to be her number one. Am I crazy, or is the show saying to that part of the of the fandom, “We’re not changing who we are, but you still have value to the franchise. And you can come aboard, if you want.”
I hope I’m not reading too much into this. The Discovery cast and crew definitely see the type to take the high road, in the face of online static. And even though I already liked Discovery, What they’re doing with Rayner gives me one more thing to like about it. I feel welcomed by the show, and I’d like to think that’s intentional.
That, or the just saw how popular Shaw was on Picard S3, and said, “We gotta get one of those.”

I love S4 Captain Burnham with my whole heart but there's something about S3 Burnham and her many casual looks and tactical suits and just the braids with the Disco blues that will forever have my heart

good news everyone! I’m now thinking about rayner and book fucking, initially for triangulation purposes (because they are both in love with michael) and then because they catch feelings for each other

Adira: No one can know that I regularly converse with my dead boyfriend :( They will think I’m insane :( I shall self-isolate and sadly play the cello :(
Baby, this is Discovery. Dead people come back all the time. At this point, there should really be a support group.

i'm not super into star trek novels and the beta canon and whatnot but i'm so glad that i read Last Best Hope because it really makes Picard s1 infinitely better on rewatch (and i say this as a Picard enjoyer/defender). like 100% recommend if you're even a little bit interested in Picard era worldbuilding.

I need to be so for real with you guys... I watched all of Discovery season 3 in June, but STILL haven't finished the finale because it's been my favorite season, and I don't want it to be over. Someone please tell me season 4 is just as good

ive been kind of chill about commander rayner this whole season but seeing him overcoming his insecurities about acting as captain, quoting 1258 y/o gene kranz and sitting in the captain’s chair has rewired my brain completely

So here's the thing right.
Fans of the "behated nuTrek" appreciate, in Disco and Picard S1/2, its willingness to let new people in (by letting in new characters, letting in new fans who saw themselves in them), to continue the Trek tradition of telling stories that often aren't told through the medium of space adventures. We loved the found family, the welcoming of people who had fallen through the cracks of Starfleet, and how you can be a part of building something better when you're living in an IRL world that has convinced you that you're not something worthy.
And then you have... "traditional" fans? Fans of Star Trek who, in as many words, like seeing straight white men achieve to be the best of the best, because that's the position they started out in life when they first watched Trek. Privileged enough to only have to think about striving forwards. Not needing to worry about other hamstrings.
Anyway, Picard S3 is basically taking these traditional fans and dumping them into the nuTrek fandom enclosure without acclimating them like fish. Now I'm not calling parts of the fandom an invasive species because that's kinda weird. But a few things I've seen happen are:
The fandom becomes less of a safe space for nuTrek fans, many of whom are queer, neurodivergent or POC, or otherwise saw themselves in characters that represent a sort of minority that they are a part of. Their struggles (as represented in nuTrek) are trivialized, criticized, and made fun of, and they are made to feel less important (or worthy of their story being told) because of it.
Traditional fans tend to get listened to when it comes to what shows are being produced. The shows that nuTrek fans took refuge in, shows that dedicated themselves to putting queer stories/POC stories front and centre, are slowly being eroded in favour of more white heroism. Which is something that nuTrek fans don't really... want to see? Like, it's cute, but when that same white heroism disadvantages you IRL, it's tiring to see it celebrated in the media you used to seek refuge in.
Just a thought.

we've been watching star trek: discovery now and it's honestly a little upsetting how much latent star trek knowledge my brain apparently holds.
like they were looking for a person and found someone else who was like "i'm kind of the person you're looking for but not exactly" and i started shouting at the tv "ARE YOU A TRILL?!?"
and the next scene is like "so do you know about the trill??" XD

Cautiously optimistic about Starfleet Academy, BUT there are some things they will need to do to justify replacing Discovery:
Tilly in a major role.
Burnham as a regular or reoccurring character (if Sonequa Martin-Green wants to)
Trans & nonbinary characters should be main characters, not side (bump Adira to a leading role?)
Gay characters should be main cast too. (Culber as a medical teacher? Stamtes comes to visit him and Adira regularly?)
If it feels whiter/straighter/more cis/safer than Discovery it will be a shame and a blight on Trek’s legacy. We know the old fans are most excited about Academy cause of the old game, we know a huge portion of the old fans hated Disco. I hope they don’t just appeal to that crowd like Picard S3 (gay characters are broken up, zero trans or non-binary characters [the changelings are right there!!!], a handful of white men are the major focus and the most important ppl to the plot [picard, Riker, Jack, Shaw, Data]).
Anyway. I also think it would be cool to get the Prodigy crew on there somehow. Crossover time jump or something.

still a bit annoyed that disco’s final season unintentionally focused on someone else’s return to the captains chair after taking three whole seasons to make Michael captain, an entire season after Saru, and only after he stepped down
