Star Vs The Forces Of Evil Season 4 (Royal Play).

Do you think the show handles it's romance poorly?

No, I think it handles it very well. It’s not perfect, and not even I agree with each and every step the show took, and I greatly value personal tastes, but I think that when we talk about the show as a whole, and not individual development, most critics to its romance and relationships come from people who have… kinda misunderstood what the show is about. Star Vs The Forces Of Evil is not a TV-Y7 fantasy history piece that gets poisoned by useless relationship drama, nor a sitcom with magic where dating is just there to delay the endgame and to occasionally teach the characters something through useless relationships with guest stars who are going to disappear from the series after one to four episodes. IT’S A CHARACTER PIECE. The characters are the driving force of the show: they grow, and through their choices and developments they make the plot go forward as well. Events don’t force them to change and grow, it’s the other way around. Obviously there needs to be some “narrative epic” here and there, but only on top of an extremely solid pillars of character development. In Starcrushed Toffee’s return pushed Star over the edge and convinced her to confess to Marco, but only because throughout the previous twenty something episodes she slooowly learned to stop running away from her problems and to face her issues and secrets. In Booth Buddies the meddling of a mischievous goblin pushed Star and Marco into a situation that lead to feelings being unveiled, but that was only the fun and silly pretense on top of a whole season of strained relationship, personal and interpersonal growth, and newly found goals in life (in case you aren’t convinced: Marco’s feelings begin changing in Scent Of A Hoodie, leaving an effect during Sophomore Slump, the realization comes in Lava Lake Beach, Night Life ties the crush to his new life on Mewni and his goals in life as well, Deep Dive leads to a new internal status quo for Marco’s feelings that leads to an hyperfixation on his role as a squire in Is Another Mystery and Marco Jr., and everything eventually explodes in Booth Buddies, and that’s just Marco’s side of the deal).

All this long detour was to say that SVTFOE is the story of Star Butterfly. This includes magic, this includes monsters, this includes her relationship with people. They all are equally important - and the latter, while having lower stakes in universe, certainly permeates her life more, since usually people grow more from their interactions with peer than from… well, having to fight murderous lizards. Star and Marco’s relationship, their friendship, their budding love, is an extremely important part of the show, at least equally important to everything else it has to offer. Let me make one last example: Gravity Falls, popular show, often compared to Star Vs The Forces of Evil. It had a strong emphasis on family, but when someone thinks of it they think of mysteries and plot, before thinking of Mabel and Dipper’s relationship as siblings. And that’s ok, because that’s what the show capitalized the most on, even though it had much more than just that. The first episode had this,

but the final scene, the one with the most emphasis, the setting the mood for what was to come, was this.

Now, what was again the last scene in the first episode of Star Vs The Forces Of Evil?

Romance is at least half of Star Vs The Forces Of Evil and Star and Marco’s relationship, with all its growth and development, is one of the pillars of the whole story, not just an extra that breaks the pace of the plot. If someone thinks that’s the case, then they’re looking at the show from the wrong angle, and it’s like complaining that Game Of Thrones has too much politic and intrigues.
