Screen International NEWS First look at Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode in ‘Freud’s Last Session’ BY MICHAEL ROSSER 11 APRIL 2023
Babylon Berlin star Liv Lisa Fries has joined Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode in the cast of Freud’s Last Session, which is in its final stages of filming in Ireland.
A first look at the film, in which Oscar-winner Hopkins plays Sigmund Freud and Goode plays author C.S. Lewis, has been released by WestEnd Films, which handles sales alongside US-based CAA Media Finance.
German actress Fries plays Freud’s daughter in the film, which is set on the eve of the Second World War and sees the founder of psychoanalysis invite Lewis to debate the existence of God.
Further cast announced today includes Jodi Balfour, known for Apple+ series For All Mankind; Stephen Campbell Moore of Epix recent adaptation of War Of The Worlds; Jeremy Northam, who played UK prime minster Anthony Eden in Netflix’s The Crown; and Orla Brady of Star Trek: Picard and Into The Badlands.
Freud’s Last Session is being directed by Matt Brown and was written by Mark St. Germain with revisions by Brown, based on the play by the same name. Producers are Alan Greisman, Rick Nicita, Meg Thomson, Brown, Hannah Leader, and Robert Stillman. Irish producers are Tristan Orpen Lynch and Aoife O’Sullivan of Subotica Productions.
The project reunites Oscar-winning production designer Luciana Arrighi with Brown, having previously collaborated on 2015’s The Man Who Knew Infinity. Cinematographer Ben Smithard, who previously worked on The Father with Hopkins, has also joined the project.
Costume designer Eimer Ni Mhaoldomhnaigh, Bafta award-winning make-up designer Morna Ferguson (The Wonder) and editor Paul Tothill (Atonement) complete the creative team.
WestEnd Films and CAA Media Finance announced several sales last year that saw Sony Picture Classics secure a multi-territory deal, including North America.
The film is an Ireland-UK co-production made with support from Screen Ireland and the UK Global Screen Fund.
Financing has been provided by Media Finance Capital, LipSync Productions, M.Y.R.A. Entertainment and a pool of independent financiers including 14 Sunset, Movieland Entertainment, the Solomon Directive, the Travelling Picture Show and Lipper/Daly Entertainment.
*Like Jeremy Northam, Jodi Balfour plays Mrs. Kennedy in The Crown. Matthew is Lord Snowdon. Stephen Campbell Moore is in the Downton Abbey movie. Ben Smithard is the DOP. GOODE connections!!! Can’t wait.

Have you heard of a streaming service called EPIX? If not, it recently changed its name to MGM+
A couple of years ago EPIX had a free weekend and I binged a scifi show it had - “War of the Worlds” starring Gabriel Byrne and Elizabeth McGovern. (McGovern did this after Downton ended and probably between the movies.)
Despite its name, it had little in common with HG Welles book. It started with an extraterrestrial invasion then went off in an entire different direct. At the time I thought I might have liked it better if it had a different name. I kept expecting it/wanting it to connect to the book.
In this series, the extraterrestrials release an electromagnetic pulse which causes most people on earth to have a seizure then die. Only people who were underground or in some other enclosure (made of metal?) survived. The extraterrestrials (not seen in the season) release robotic dogs to kill off any survivors (via a gun built into their snout).
What I found interesting was that it was an international production - England and France. The series followed 3 groups trying to survive:
group one in London led by Byrne;
group two in Paris with an English father trying to get to England to find out if his family is okay (he travels with a French woman and her teen son);
group three - a French woman scientist in an outpost in the Alps who detected the extraterrestrials signal before the attack. She hooks up with a team of French soldiers who protect the base in the alps. The scenes in the Alps were entirely in French (with subtitles).
When I finished the season, I felt indifferent. There was an English young woman central to the plot. She had been blind but after the attack she got her sight back. And she had “visions” related to the extraterrestrials AND dreams about the French teen boy from group two. The thing was, I didn’t particular like those 2 characters. She was too twitchy and the teen boy was clearly unhinged but hiding it.
I forgot all about the series until this week. I was looking for a new streaming service and MGM+ was available cheap via Amazon (which bought MGM proper last year). It had two more seasons of the show. Despite my indifference, I binged/scanned the episodes (fast forwarding when I got bored).
The issue over all with the series is that it didn’t seem as if the creators/producers had a cohesive plan - there were radical changes between seasons. And a kind of Mumbo-Jumbo use of pseudo-science to explain plot holes.
Season 2 - the two French groups eventually make it to London during this season. But McGovern doesn’t survive into season 2. It is revealed the extraterrestrials were humans (in season one it said they were from another “galaxy”). They looked exactly like normal humans, spoke English, and wore the same kind of grunge clothes as the Earth humans. I could only tell the difference because I notice their clothing was shade of dark green. They had traveled to Earth and centuries into their past to kill Gabriel Byrne because he would release a virus that would kill then all. (But Byrne only creates the virus because they invaded Earth!?!)
Eventually it’s revealed that the formerly blind girl and the sullen teen boy were the “Adam and Eve” of the extraterrestrials. They both had genetic defects which the Gabriel Bynre character (now an expert geneticist) would exploit to create the virus.
Although the girl was exposed to the virus, somehow both she and the teen boy were lured into an empty space ship, which the extraterrestrial leader sent into space to their home planet (where they would have children and populate the extraterrestrial planet). HUH?
Time travel stories often have plot holes but this one was a doozie. How did the the woman and the teen get to the planet in the first place… they could only do it because their ancestors sent a ship. There was no attempt to explain this. It was just never mentioned.
Season 3 made another incredible shift. Somehow Gabriel Byrne was able to steal another ship and use it as a Time Machine, going back in time to just before the invasion. He sees the young woman (blind) and kills her by pushing her off a building. BUT extraterrestrial leader and a bunch of her team had also been on the time traveling ship. They were determine to kill Byrne - this time in revenge for negating their existence by killing their ancient grandmother. How? By triggering another electromagnetic pulse to kill all humans on Earth.
I won’t explain the resolution, except to say there was a “black hole” hovering above the Arctic that connected this Earth to the parallel Earth where the invasion occurred. Other than saying radio waves couldn’t escape the black hole, there was no mention of what other hazards might occur with a black hole hovering over the earth for many months.
Why did I watch seasons 2 & 3? Dunno. Part is because I recently canceled 4 streaming services (HBO max, Paramount+, AMC+, and Broadway direct). I think I was curious where it was going. More to the point, why was the series funded with its meandering plot laden with holes?
(The thing I liked the best about the series was the robot dogs… an interesting design. They digitally designed, then 3D printed. But all movement on screen was CGI.)

Friday Releases for May 20
Friday is the busiest day of the week for new releases, so we've decided to collect them all in one place. Friday Releases for May 20 include Men, Jackass 4.5, Killing Nothing, and more.
Men
Men, the new movie from Alex Garland, is out today.
In the aftermath of a personal tragedy, Harper (Jessie Buckley) retreats alone to the beautiful English countryside, hoping to have found a place to heal. But someone or something from the surrounding woods appears to be stalking her. What begins as simmering dread becomes a fully-formed nightmare, inhabited by her darkest memories and fears in visionary filmmaker Alex Garland’s (Ex Machina, Annihilation) feverish, shape-shifting new horror film.
Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers
Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, the new movie from Akiva Schaffer, is out today.
In “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers,” Chip and Dale are living amongst cartoons and humans in modern-day Los Angeles, but their lives are quite different now. It has been decades since their successful television series was canceled, and Chip (voice of Mulaney) has succumbed to a life of suburban domesticity as an insurance salesman. Dale (voice of Sandberg), meanwhile, has had CGI surgery and works the nostalgia convention circuit, desperate to relive his glory days. When a former castmate mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale must repair their broken friendship and take on their Rescue Rangers detective personas once again to save their friend’s life.
Mondocane
Mondocane, the new movie from Alessandro Celli, is out today.
In the not-too-distant future on Italy’s southern coast, the city of Taranto has become a toxic wasteland ruled by warring gangs and surrounded by barbed wire, where best friends Pietro and Cristian dream of escaping their hardscrabble existence for a better life in nearby New Taranto. Opportunity knocks when Hothead, the charismatic and dangerous leader of a local gang called the Ants, recruits the two boys and gives them everything they fantasized about: money in their pockets, a family, and a father figure. The friendship begins to splinter, though, as Cristian displays a surprising talent for mayhem and quickly rises through the ranks. With a new female friend pushing them further apart, an obsessed cop hounding the gang, and Hothead becoming increasingly unhinged, the boys barrel toward a confrontation that will determine if their bond is strong enough to survive.
Torn Hearts
Torn Hearts, the new movie from Brea Grant, is out today.
Blumhouse Television and EPIX present this horrifying tale set in Nashville’s Country Music scene. Two rising artists’ visit to their idol, Harper Dutch (Golden Globe-winner Katey Sagal), turns into a twisted series of mental and physical torment.
Jackass 4.5
Jackass 4.5, the new movie from Jeff Tremaine, is out today.
Through outrageous, never-before-seen footage, witness the making of the Jackass crew's last go at wild stunts.
Fire in the Mountains
Fire in the Mountains, the new movie from Ajitpal Singh, is out today.
In northern India, a breathtakingly beautiful Himalayan community attracts tourists by commingling South Asian and Swiss Alps aesthetics. One local woman competes with her neighbors for business while battling the strictures of patriarchy, a local infrastructure from hell, and religious superstitions. She saves money, uses feminine wiles to subvert the corrupt powers-that-be, and piggy-backs her son up and down the mountainside to medical appointments with condescending doctors. In the end, our heroine’s tightly wound grit must find release… in triumph, or madness, or both.
The Valet
The Valet, the new movie from Richard Wong, is out today.
In “The Valet,” world famous movie star, Olivia (Samara Weaving) faces a PR disaster when a paparazzi snaps a photo of her with her married lover, Vincent (Max Greenfield). The hard-working valet Antonio (Eugenio Derbez) accidentally appears in the same photo and is enlisted to pose as Olivia’s new boyfriend as a cover up. This ruse with Olivia thrusts Antonio into the spotlight and unexpected chaos. In this fish out of water romantic comedy, two worlds and cultures collide as both Olivia and Antonio start to see themselves more clearly than ever before.
Cordelia
Cordelia, the new movie from Adrian Shergold, is out today.
Cordelia (Antonia Campbell-Hughes), a young woman living in London, meets her mysterious and alluring neighbor Frank (Johnny Flynn) for the first time but quickly becomes suspicious of his motives. With her twin sister away for the weekend, Cordelia is left alone and overcome with paranoia. She begins to unravel and sink back into past traumas the more that Frank tries to charm his way into her life, becoming a danger to herself and others.
Night Sky
Night Sky, the new TV series from Holden Miller and Daniel C. Connolly, is out today.
Spanning space and time, Night Sky follows Irene (Spacek) and Franklin York (Simmons), a couple who, years ago, discovered a chamber buried in their backyard which inexplicably leads to a strange, deserted planet. They’ve carefully guarded their secret ever since, but when an enigmatic young man (Chai Hansen) enters their lives, the Yorks’ quiet existence is quickly upended… and the mystifying chamber they thought they knew so well turns out to be much more than they could ever have imagined.
Now & Then
Now & Then, the new TV series from Ramón Campos, Teresa Fernández-Valdés, and Gema R. Neira, is out today.
Now and Then is a multi-layered thriller that explores the differences between youthful aspirations and the reality of adulthood, when the lives of a group of college best friends are forever changed after a celebratory weekend ends up with one of them dead. Now the remaining five are reluctantly reunited by a threat that puts their seemingly perfect worlds at risk.

World Between Worlds TRoS Version
This morning on Twitter, it came to my attention based on a tweet from pagethepunisher, which stated that they thought they see Ahch-To, and suddenly, everything fell into place for me.
Tumblr media
My brain first went to Palpatine’s line, “You're coming together will be your undoing.”
Theory/Speculation
Palpatine is not in the living world. He is in the in-between or as Rebels viewers would call it the World Between Worlds. It answers the question of where has Palpatine been and how is he alive? I’m not the first to notice that when Palpatine falls over the railing, he was engulfed in blue flame. This is the exact color that is used in Rebels as the Emporer himself chases after Ezra and Ashoka with blue flame. Trying to tether himself to the WBW’s. But this is not the only evidence to back up this theory.
First the TRoS Art book cover
Tumblr media
Rey and Kylo on opposite sides are touching swords, one blue one red. Kylo is upside down if we orient the picture correctly.
Next we have the trailer evidence. Kylo walking in a blue world that has lots of lightening. See the picture of the tweet above.
Tumblr media
Third, again, the tweet. Is that Ahch-To?! Yes, it could be. Aside from the shape, yes, we have more evidence.
Rey—“There’s something else, beneath the island, a place, dark place.”
Luke— “Balance, powerful light, powerful dark.”
Rey— “It’s cold... It’s calling me”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More than a few have also noticed that the walls behind Dark Rey resemble the Mirror Cave.
Tumblr media
And when Rey asks for her parents, we see two people walk up to the mirror. That looks suspiciously like Rey and Kylo.
If I’m correct, then the final battle fought against Palpatine will be in the WBW’s. A battle within the spiritual realm. The first Jedi Temple was built atop a dark temple to balance. And Sidious, if trapped within, is looking to tip the scales in his favor just as he did with Anakin. He will attempt to seduce Rey or Kylo or both.
Rey will enter the mirror and cross into the WBWs to confront Sidious. Perhaps Ben has already and knows he lurks within it.
Tumblr media
Where does Dark Rey fit in all this? Well if Ben/Kylo is on the other side of the mirror perhaps that is his temptation he sees in the mirror or something more sinister for him to deal with.
That’s it that’s the theory!

RISE OF SKYWALKER
Tumblr media
Rey dropping her helmet is her final transition from childhood to adulthood
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Tumblr media
Unity and oneness is the thematic core of this film and of the entire saga.
Tumblr media
The theme of spiritualism through the recurring line “the Force brought us together/your coming together” is the motif driving home the idea that destined, divine union is the answer to three generations of chaos and pain. We need to be one. Not just Rey and Ben but ALL OF US.
Tumblr media
“People keep telling me they know me. No one does.”
Rey has been hearing a lot of junk over the past few months. She’s the one everyone is talking about, talking to. But no one understands her powers or her isolation. No one knows how she’s feeling or what she’s going through except…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“But I do.”
They are inevitably being thrust together. I think this may be the scene when he discovers her, but it’s equally as likely that the Bond brought Kylo through space to her. The Force needs their union to stop a greater evil.
Tumblr media
It appears that Palpatine’s forces have been dormant, but now that Rey and Ben have come together, it awakens him from an ancient sleep; their Bond is powerful enough to make the Force quiver.
Tumblr media
THEY’RE GONNA KISS JESUS IT’S HAPPENING
But for real, it looks like this is more middle of the movie. They are in the ruins of some ship that has gone untouched for years.
In this scene, they are talking. Ben’s saber is away or missing.
If I had to guess, this entire section of the film is the investigation portion of the movie. They have been fighting and avoiding each other up until now. Only now they realize that something BIGGER is happening.
This is the conversation when they realize they need each other.
They need to team up now.
They’ll travel through the Bond to uncover the past and what they are up against.
Tumblr media
Finn a) tries to intervene in Rey’s fight with Ben b) sees Rey and Ben disappear mid-fight. RE: Force Bond is jumping them around through space (and time?).
Tumblr media
The destruction of Vader’s mask. Palpatine has been using this relic as a conduit to corrupt Ben. This moment heralds the end of Rey and Ben’s investigation. Vader’s mask must be destroyed to cut Ben’s ties to Palpatine.
It must also be destroyed if they are to stand a chance in the final battle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ben is going to Rey’s side in this first shot, regardless of whether or not the second shot happens in the same scene. No one can tell me otherwise.
Tumblr media
And this...
THIS
This is a girl who has finally found her family.
Maybe it’s her parents.
Maybe it’s her found family in Finn, Rose, and Poe.
Or maybe
It’s a Skywalker Rising.
