the rules:

“Did you accidentally step in a puddle of stayfast potion? Or do you just really like the view from that step?” For the thousandth time in the hellish past twenty-four hours, Steve’s heart attempts to leap out of his chest. Only to slam against his ribs once more. His pulse kicking up a racket, he pulls in a leisurely breath before he turns to face his newest assailant. A young woman stands behind him, her elbow racked on the finely carved stair post, a single finger tap, tap, tapping against the pine. Her brassy hair, hacked short and fitful, just grazes her jawline; her kohl-rimmed eyes, their color plucked straight from the winter sky, regard him with sharp suspicion; and pinched as it is, her mouth pulls in the muscles of her face, accentuating its narrow angles; in combination, they lend her the appearance of a hawk, prowling for prey. Cinnamon freckles dash across her cheeks, much like the bard’s. She raises a brow. “Oh,” he says, stupidly. “I, uh—I was just…looking for…“ He casts a fruitless glance around. “Um…” Her brow comes down, ceding its position to a loose smirk. “I’ll hazard a guess you’re Steve, then?” Could word have possibly spread that quickly? He churns up a chuckle, lays it on a breeze and packs it off with a grin. “I’m afraid you have me at a disadvantage. You seem to know me, but I haven’t yet had the pleasure of knowing you.” He drapes his hand out. Her eyes flick down to it. Then, she laughs. Loud and melodic as a braying donkey. A hand clutched to her stomach, she tilts her head back and sends her mirth to the treetops. And it takes a good six seconds for her to come down. When she does, she wipes a tear from her cheek. “What a royal line that was. Tell me: have you won the hearts of many blushing maidens with that charm?” “I don’t wish to brag, but yes.”
