Having a glimmer now of how his mind functioned, I was reasonably sure I wouldn't be disturbed - by servants, at least. If he hadn't done it already, he was doubtless on his way now to warn them. I marveled at how much I'd changed since Truckee. Preparing to knock on his door there, I'd felt I was about to enter the lion's mouth, but my fear had been tempered by the childish certainty that nothing could harm me. Here, in this Beverly Hills mansion, scarcely a month later, I was brazenly, almost matter-of-factly, ready to give this man anything he wanted, without qualm or reservation.

Avoiding both of the mirrors in the guest room, I undressed quickly, put on the terrycloth robe and stepped into the bathroom. For a moment I wondered if I would be frightened by inhaling steam. I turned the handle Charlie had shown me, and immediately a hissing sound began. I took off the robe, hung it on a hook, stepped over the tiled threshold into the small room, and waited. Nothing seemed to be happening, and then all at once steam was chugging at me from every-where, clouding the walls and the air. My eyes began to smart and I hesitated at taking a deep breath, but soon the warmth was soft and soothing.

The foglike mist billowed, grew thicker and thicker, finally filled every inch of the room. I couldn't see anything. The steam, gently caressing me, was making me drowsy, and I lay down on the marble slab and closed my eyes. Every picture and movie I'd ever seen of queens and princesses bathing in royal tubs, with slave girls drying them and anointing their bodies with perfumed oils, danced in front of me. I draped my arm over my forehead and crossed my ankles, wondering what was to happen next.

What happened next was Charlie, lying beside me and teasing my neck with swift, darting kisses.

"It's easier this way," he said huskily. "We can't see each other."

On the beach and in his car he had been determinedly in charge, yet rather gentle. Now, though, he was suddenly the man from Truckee again, roughly using me rather than loving me. But it no longer mattered. I hugged him frantically. Then there was a sharp, piercing pain inside me and I cried out, but I did not release my grip. The pain blinded me far more than the encircling steam, but I writhed wildly, as though in ecstasy, to let him know I belonged to him and then I received all of him.

For minutes after he left I lay still on the slab. The steam had started to recede. Cool drops of water fell from the ceiling, and the moisture on the walls was trickling down in rivulets to an indented nickel drain in the floor.

Finally I was able to raise myself. I stood weakly, aghast at all the blood. I was dazed. And I was still in pain.

I was supposed to be a woman now. I was fifteen, but I felt younger than fifteen. It was crazy, of course, to think I would have a baby. Charlie had told me not to worry.

“Let me show you a wonderful feature of my bath,” [Charlie] said. His bathroom was between his room and one of the guest bedrooms. The bath was attractively designed and featured a steam room, which was uncommon at the time. “Did you ever have a steam bath?” Charlie asked.

I responded through nervous laughter that I had not.

"It might be fun to try it. What do you say, there’s a towel. Take off your clothes and step in. I'll wait for you outside."

I waited until I heard the door of the bathroom close behind him before I removed my clothes and stepped into the steam bath. The steam was gushing out of a vent at a very fast rate. It was only a few minutes until I could not see my hand before my face. I decided to lie down on the marble slab and enjoy the feeling of warmth permeating the air.

Suddenly, I heard the door of the steam bath quietly open and could feel Charlie's hand gently going up and down my body. He was silent for a very long time. I thought to myself that I had asked for this, that I had secretly hoped this would happen, but I was quite timid. Charlie sensed my hesitation.

“Don't be ashamed,” he said. “This is an ideal way to make love. We can't see each other.”

I relaxed and allowed him to make love to me. It was a warming feeling, and I did not feel much pain. Charlie eventually left the room, and the steam began to disappear.

Out of the steam room I took a shower and then dressed. I was more than a little alarmed to see the blood-stained towels I had left in the steam room. However, I was feeling fine and experienced no discomfort in Charlie's company.

"Do you feel all right?" was his greeting to me as I entered his bedroom.

"It was a wonderful experience," I said. "Do the servants know what we've been doing in the steam room?"

"Perhaps," he said, "but it doesn't matter. They're close-mouthed. That's the way the Japanese are." He escorted me downstairs, and his chauffeur drove me home.
