Medieval Stećak (tombstone)
Sarajevo, Bosnia
This stećak is an important tombstone of the region. Scholars contend that it was made during the 14th century and served as the tombstone of the medieval Bosnian King Stjepan II who died in 1353. The illustrations of buildings on the end are believed to be some of the earliest representations of Bosnian domestic structures. The stećak was found in Donja Zgošća near Kakanj, approximately 50 kilometers north of Sarajevo along the Bosna River. The tombstone now sits in the garden of the Bosnia and Herzegovina National Museum in Sarajevo. (photo 2008)

The area around Stolac bas been settled for at least 15,000 years, as evidenced by the markings in Badanj Cave, which experts have dated 12,000 - 16,000 BCE. Three kilometers west of Stolac is an impressive stećak necropolis dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries: Radimlja.

First of all, thank you for being patient! I started classes at Georgetown on Wednesday and arrived back in the US on Tuesday night, so it’s been a very quick adjustment with only a little time to edit photos and write these posts (I LOVE my classes, though!)
Today, I’m going to take you on a walk through two national museums. The first is Sarajevo itself, which is a preserved testament to its…

Out of context spoilers for this new book of mine.
Stecak, an medieval Bosnian tombstones, at the village of Lukomir, the highest village in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The nearby (and by that I mean 3 and a half hours of walking) village of Umoljani have also been known to be plagued by a dragon they defeated with prayer, hence the name.
Sadly, they are not a part of this book, but are cool af anyway.
If these effing tombstones were like 500 meters away from the village, they would be perfect, but they are right there. And this isn't that small or that empty of a place. It's full of people. Someone would have either noticed a dragon or would have already been eaten by it.
So, for now, and it might change, I'm going with the necropolis om south side of Jahorina and Jana probably lives on Visocica, the mountain that will probably be our next hike. But the more i hike, the more I learn, so it might all change by the year 2567, when this book is discovered by future human archaeologists.

Stećak. - Grb i natpis velikog kneza bosanskog Radoja Radosalića Pribinića
Natpis je pisan bosanskom ćirilicom. Počinje u polukrugu iznad grba na zapadnoj, a nastavlja se na južnoj podužnoj strani. Integralni tekst glasi: [S]E ZALMENIJE KNEZA RADOJA, VELIKOG KNEZA BOSANSKOG, A POSTAVI JEGA SIN NJEGOV KNEZ RADIČ Z BOŽJOM POMOĆU i SVOJIH VJERNIH A S INOM NIJEDNOM POMOĆU NEGO SAM ON.

This is a stećak (monumental medieval tombstone) in front of National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Thousands of others are scattered around the country, exposed to bad weather conditions, and worst of all - vandalism.
Save Cultural Heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina is an IndieGoGo project launched to preserve historical heritage and raise awareness of its importance.
This campaign was submitted to MediumAevum, and I’m more than glad to promote it. Little did the organizers know that I am their neighbor (from Serbia) and I know all too well how little (virtually nothing) the government is prepared to spend in an effort to help museums and historians.
The guys are raising “only” $1.090, so every reblog, if you’re short on money, can help. You can watch their campaign video here:
youtube
Or visit their tumblr arheonorg for more info on their mission and projects.
