#stella fortuna event
Note
can i participate in the event? number 4 please <3, the character i'd like is oikawa tooru from haikyuu, I would like hurt/comfort (enemies to lovers) thank you!!
Tumblr media
it took soooo long, i’m so sorry; but this is the last event request which came in in time; thank you to everyone who participated!! ♡
i couldn’t do enemies to lovers though bc that was a trope in and of itself+ combining it with “baking” didn’t give me any great ideas
⇢ ˗ˏˋ Flours for you ゚☾. ࿐
Tumblr media
trope: baking [space nr. 24]
pairing: post-timeskip oikawa x gn! reader
genre: hurt/comfort
warnings: none
Tumblr media
You were disappointed, to boil it down. But it wasn’t like you could openly show it, not on this day, which somehow only made it hurt worse.
It had been weeks since you and your boyfriend could spend some quality time together, most of your conversations being held over text or post-its on the fridge, asking to add butter to the grocery list or saying leftovers from yesterday were still stowed away. You knew what you were agreeing to when choosing to date Oikawa, knew his job took a lot of his time, yet, you couldn’t help but miss him anyway.
A small, hopeful voice in your head almost convinced you that today might be different, it was your birthday after all. His next match was a home game and Oikawa wouldn’t have to travel far away this time. So, no matter how selfish the thought was, you went to bed alone the night before in hopes of waking up to two strong arms wrapped around you and a warm body pressed against you.
When you opened your eyes, his side of the bed was messy but cold. While getting ready for work without much of a spring to your step, you saw his practice bag and keys gone, confirming your suspicions.
As you went about your day with no card, no post-it, no flowers and no text in sight, your shoulders couldn’t help but slump. While really grateful for friends, family and colleagues wishing you a happy birthday, you felt a deeper pang and more unease settle in your heart and gut.
One thing about Oikawa, he was attentive in any part of life, there was no way he wouldn’t at least shoot you a cheeky message, unless for the first time he actually forgot…
By the time you came home, you were ready to curl up on the couch with a movie and maybe order some take-out, still in disbelief you didn’t hear from the one person you really wanted to see today. There was that same tiny voice telling you the day wasn’t over yet but there was also your best friend on speed dial, ready to see you through the evening.
To your surprise, when you opened the front door, your heart soared as you were greeted by lights, the sound of dishes clinking and… the scent of cocoa?  Popping your head into the kitchen you indeed found the source of the noise to be your boyfriend, whisking something together in a mixing bowl with a look of utmost concentration.
“Tooru?”
It was almost comical, the speed at which his head whipped around and his fluffy hair bounced with the movement. For a split-second, his features fell in shock before beaming at you brightly. Before you could move from your spot, the arms you had missed this morning were slung around you as Oikawa twirled you around.
“Mi amor! Feliz cumpleaños!” When he rested his head on your shoulder and basked in your embrace, your hands tightened the grip on the back of his shirt. A sob choked you up as bottled emotions bubbled to the top and your throat closed up. Alarmed at the tears spilling from your eyes, Oikawa pulled back and cupped your face in his hands, a worried look creasing his forehead. “What is wrong? Are you okay? Please talk to me, love.”
“I- I can’t believe I thought– I thought you didn’t remember,” you sniffled past the weight in your chest. The guilt about not trusting him ate you up inside and made you avoid his eyes. “But when you weren’t there this morning and didn’t talk to me and I hadn’t seen you in forever… I just missed you so much, Tooru.”
“I missed you too, angel. I’m so sorry I’ve been so busy with work lately.” He gently wiped your tears and placed a sweet kiss on your temple, his touch lingering just a little longer than usual. Slowly his hand ran up and down the length of your spine until he could feel your sobs calm down. “I really wanted to congratulate you in person, so that’s on me. That was really stupid of me.”
“It was,” you agreed, making him chuckle.
“But you ruined your own surprise, that wasn’t so nice either,” Oikawa said, a soft grin tugging at his lips. “Guess you’ll have to help me finish it to make it up to me.”
The raise of your brow was interrupted by your boyfriend picking you up and sitting you down on the counter. With a clear look at the mixing bowl, you finally saw where the scent of cocoa came from as Oikawa went to preheat the oven.
“Watcha making?” you chimed, making some room for him to stand between your legs as he smoothed his hands up your thighs
“What a question… A birthday cake, of course,” he said, booping your nose.
As your house filled with the smell of chocolate and the sound of laughter, the cake lost a substantial amount of batter before even seeing the oven and it became clear there’d be a lot more clean-up to do than usual but you didn’t mind. After all, spending time with your favourite idiot far surpassed everything else you could’ve wished for.

Been thinking about how Mona implies she reads fate by reading the set paths of peoples’ stars and her wording when talking about other peoples’ constellations, specifically the implications that more than one person can have the same constellation.
Not in the sense that two people can have the same constellation at one time, but in the sense that when someone who has a constellation dies, another person is able to receive their constellation. Of course, there’s still the question of who exactly gets constellations, like if they’re something only vision holders have, though Mona pretty much says that everyone has stars. But the basis for this is in Mona’s voice lines about other characters and the way she talks about their constellations.
In English, she says “A Pavo Ocellus” about Kaeya and “A Tempus Fugit” about Lisa, implying that more than one of their respective constellations exist; and, in context, she refers to Kaeya and Lisa themselves when talking about their constellation, so she doesn’t mean that there are multiples of their constellations but that there are multiple people tied (or who have been tied) to those constellations. Of course, this changes a bit when looking at the original Chinese voice lines (I should mention that I don’t understand Chinese, written or spoken, well so I’m using somewhat iffy translations). The wording of Lisa’s changes completely, though Mona still refers to Kaeya’s as “His Pavo Ocellus”, implying that there once existed a Pavo Ocellus that was not his. If this seems a bit too out of hand for you, let me just point out that, across all languages, Mona tells what each person’s constellation symbolizes (Noctua is vigilance, Pavo Ocellus is nobility, etc). Even if this doesn’t necessarily mean that constellations have multiple people, it at least points to the idea that they exist before the person they’re tied to exists, and either way this serves to prove my point later.
During The Ancient Azure Stars, Mona describes stars as recording everything that happens in their person’s lifetime while following a path, and that people who have stars following their path have happy lives while those whose stars deviate meet unfortunate fates. Maybe I’m grasping a bit here, but this implies that Mona reads fate not by reading the future per se, but by reading the set paths of a person’s stars.
Here I’m going to digress a bit and mention Aloy, who has both a constellation and a vision despite not being from Teyvat. Ignoring the implications of her having a vision for now, in her original world, she does not have a constellation (as far as I can tell), but she receives one upon arriving in Teyvat. This works similarly for the Traveler, who we see receive a new constellation every time they interact with a new region’s statue of the seven. I assume the granting of constellations is how Albedo, an artificial human, and Kaeya, who also presumably does not come from Teyvat (it’s never outright stated he lived in Khaenri’ah before), have constellations in Teyvat’s sky too.
Also, Aloy does not have Stella Fortuna, however, but from what I can tell, currently, there is no basis in lore for Stella Fortuna, unless the activation of constellations is the lore, which gives a very different meaning to constellations. This means a person’s constellation is inactive from the moment they receive it, but certain actions will allow the owner to activate them over time (aka wishing, though that’s a whole other lore rabbit hole I don’t want to go down right now).
Not to mention the Traveler, whose constellation(s) are activated not with Stella Fortuna, but with Memories. And memories are things very well established in Genshin lore.
But basically, the point I’m trying to make goes back to the Unreconciled Stars event. If what Scaramouche had said then about the stars being a lie is true (that is, the sky of Teyvat is a fabrication of Celestia, or something of the sort), then the fates that Mona reads are fake too. If it’s true that Mona reads the set paths of stars in Teyvat’s sky, then it means that each constellation has a set path it follows every time it receives a new owner. If people gain constellations upon arriving in Teyvat, this means that it’s Celestia who assigns them. If Celestia decides who gets what constellation, Celestia determines fate in Teyvat.

Reading up on Genhsin burn out is the most profound parasocial relationship I am having right now.
Like yes king, Chasm was peak event and lore, lately, when it comes to regions. Enkanomiya is close second.
Yes, point 3 had the most confusing character and kit releases.
Yes, Nahida is the only one (outside of Dain) who have us anything valuable on our sibling, which only took 3 years.
The desert was torturous. The goddamn festival period in Genshin is... Well, I don't know what it is. I get it summer events. But oh my god you don't have to be like this: 30 hours of dialogue, 2-3 hours of mini games, 6 hours of exploration.
The fucking aranaras search was the single stupidest thing Genshin came up with.
The fact that the entire Abyss since point 3 solely fucking relied on your Aggravate/Spread the reaction and occasional Bloom. You don't have that many constant-electro-apllication characters available, Gesnhin.
The rewards feel diminishing. You are AR60? Fucking die then. That's it. That's the end. You are the greatest adventurer of them all, fuck off now.
Gesnhin needs a fucking universal Stella fortuna for their 4 stars. It's fucking infuriating how we get these new characters who, let's be honest, most fiction best with higher Cs. But if you don't get those C's on a banner, get FUCKED. Gesnhin shop steal fucking features only Mondstadt-Liyue support characters after 3 years. Why can't you fucking add more? They are not cheap anyway.

How haikyuu characters would play genshin impact:
//featuring me nerding out about mbti types 😔
Karasuno
Hinata
As an ESFP he would probably choose his main based on who feels good to use
Quick movements, lots of jumping, strong = XIAO MAIN (probably finds the flashiness and edginess cool and enjoys the button mashing too)
would aggressively compete with kageyama on who can beat spiral abyss the fastest and with the shortest time
unfortunately they’re both not very good (initially because kenma helps him out after)
Would try to follows the plot but dialogue goes over his head
Does not understand stats other than attack at first
Wish impulse is real and never has any primos
would attempt to talk to every npc
Kageyama
META SLAVE
Has no idea what wishing/gacha is at first and builds his starters really well
Then he found out and currently mains Ganyu, Zhongli, Hutao for the big numbers
gloats about his first 5 star to hinata
Does not talk to NPCs at all and barely digs into the story
only there for spiral abyss and to make his characters stronger
Tsukishima
Didn’t wanna play until yamaguchi dragged him in to have someone to co op with
Appreciates the story and lore more than the gameplay aspect
Eula, razor (cv uchiyama kouki) main—easy to build, easy to use
Doesn’t care about wishing either
Got Eula by accident and now holds it over kageyama’s head
Has really good artifact RNG that it infuriates kagehina (gloats about it to fan the flame 😚)
Yamaguchi
he’s infp he chooses based on characters he likes 🥺
Diluc, albedo, ayaka main
(i can’t explain why I think he’d like those three, it just Makes Sense)
Co ops with tsukki and yachi, plays both dps and support
Spiral abyss makes him anxious but he pushes through anyway!!
Daichi
Starter team king 😩
Feels bad about switching his regular team out FJDFJDJJDDJ DAICHI
Probably a casual player though
Plays to coop with suga and tanaka but they carry him through domains
he’s trying his best
Suga
Mains based on whoever’s fun to play too!!
but enjoys more of a challenge
Childe main
Waiting for Scaramouche to drop hAha 🥲 and harbingers in general
Appreciates the plot and is very interested in lore!!
Diligently does spiral abyss
Doesn’t quite wish on impulse, but if theres a character he likes he’ll spend everything on their banner
Asahi
Does not play, got too scared (see: haikyuu ova)
Nishinoya
Rolls VERY much on impulse
Similar to hinata in that he also likes playing playstyles that feel good
Xiao and/or yoimiya main
(xiao because he’s short jk)
Probably raised Rosaria and planned to use her
Plot who???? we only care about world exploration and fighting in this house
Tanaka
wished for all the women, raised all the women, uses all the women
valid
Primarily mains Rosaria, ningguang and Lisa though
sorry beidou you remind him of his sister too much
waiting for signora like many of us are
Coops with noya and has INSANELY bad rng luck
Yachi
Also chooses based on characters’ personalities
gay, mains sucrose and jean
isfj child and probably feels bad about the underrated characters :(
uses amber, xinyan and qiqi too!
Raises all characters but hasn’t raised anyone to 90
Coops with yamaguchi and uses jean (as healer, support, damage dealer)
Talks to NPCs and sympathizes with their sad backstories
Gets too anxious to do spiral floors 9-12 too (mood)
Seijoh
Oikawa
Oh boy
this ENFJ 3w2 guy? you KNOW he’s gonna be the best
As long as it doesn’t clash with volleyball of course
Very VERY competitive in abyss
Has one character hed get attached to but doesn’t limit himself to using them only
Incredibly focused on team synergy, carefully crafts teams to bring out the best in each character
Tests best damage output too
But also he’d probably use meta characters and secretly raise the ones he actually likes?
Current fave: Yoimiya
Uses strong characters for coop but uses his faves for single player domains (or coop with iwaizumi)
Likes characters but surprisingly wouldnt be too invested in the plot
does not whale out of pride
Iwaizumi
Geo user
Uses characters he finds respectable in the storyline + hard hitters
Razor, klee, jean main but unaware of the family relationship
Sometimes uses beidou although her burst takes too long sometimes
Pretty casual player, only started because of Oikawa
Hanamaki
obviously he and matsukawa would make zhongli pillar dick jokes
Kaeya and beidou main (he thinks they’re cool)
Not that impatient to wait for bursts to charge or has a lot of energy recharge
whale
Matsukawa
……. Hutao main
funeral home
Would use qiqi and hutao together for the meme then grows to genuinely like qiqi
Saves up for a really long time then spends it all at once
Kindaichi
Doesn’t play much tbh
Offline for a week, comes back to do commissions for one day, leaves
Kunimi
Hed be pretty good
but lazy and forget to do dailies
then buy welkin moon instead
Focuses more on the story too rather than gameplay and points out loopholes
Mains whoever he has in his team with good synergy (like chongyun xingqiu xiangling)
Kyoutani
Rage quits 5 minutes in after hearing paimon’s voice 😔
Throws his phone at the wall
Yahaba
Simps for jean
Mains jean
Dedicated to dailies and spiral abyss
But doesn’t wish that much
Was the one who tried getting kyoutani into it and suffered the consequences
Nekoma
Kuroo
ENTP king raises a whole arsenal of characters for spiral abyss
I cant see him really getting attached to one in particular ?
makes zhongli pillar dick jokes every chance he can get
but also uses him for utility
Wants to try using a whole bunch of characters and wishes on every banner
But uses the meta ones with good team comps
sparks twitter debates with ….. interesting takes
“_____ is completely shit”
Kenma
OH BOY HES A GAMER GAMER
Whale whale whale whale
He’s tony to
Best synergy teams, understands the value of elemental mastery, REALLY values good supports, calculates possible damage numbers
Kazuha, zhongli, bennett, venti are a staple in his teams
Helps hinata and kuroo until kuroo teases too much by deliberately playing horribly
mildom and youtube streamer like murase ayumu
Appreciates story and lore very much too
Yaku
he’d LOVE the children
Probably would use characters that remind him of family members and friends
Klee, diona, qiqi, chongyun, xingqiu, razor, bennett
does spiral abyss but not obsessively
Lev
KENMA-SAN!!! LETS PLAY TOGETHER!!!
I’m sorry he would not know how the game works
Doesn’t do the ascension quests and gets stuck at AR 26 with 500k extra points
Thinks he’s amazing but it’s because he’s stuck at world level 1
I’m sorry lev ily but ……. its the truth
Tries pulling for everyone too and mains the first 5 star he got
(childe because he’s russian AKSHDKDHSKSHS /j)
Wants diluc and xiao because they look cool but gets Mona instead (doesnt understand how to use her)
Yamamoto
Also raises the women like tanaka but + kaeya
Lev complained to him about getting Mona while he’s wanted Mona for months
Not really a dedicated intense gamer EXCEPT for during those battle events
Fukurodani
Bokuto
WANTS THE STRONG AND COOL LOOKING 5 STARS
Eula, zhongli, diluc, xiao
but doesn’t know how to build either
doesn’t understand stats
would feel really bad for qiqi
Wouldn’t like signora for hurting venti :(
Wouldn’t like childe too :( until he plays the story quest and sees the ruin guard cutscene
then starts sobbing because of what a good brother he is
“AKAAAASSHI I wanna do that too!!!” then he dies
Tries to use childe but doesn’t understand the cool down management
Mispronounces and misspells tartaglia
for more info on how bokuto plays genshin see Kimura ryohei’s YouTube channel ✨
Akaashi
the true childe main (just like me)
Uses characters based on utility
but mains whoever reminds him of bokuto FJDHFJFJDKSJ
Very good supports but unlike Kenma, he chooses and builds supports around his main
also uses very good supports so people won’t realize he’s using childe for the cv kimura ryohei (everyone knows anyway)
Literature nerd appreciates the plot, writing and deep lore too
Konoha
Tries pulling for everyone but has REALLY bad luck
Has really good characters but never the one he wants
loses all 50/50s and has a c4 qiqi
Ends up maining qiqi as dps
sorry konoha i didn’t mean to slander you
Shiratorizawa
Ushijima
does not know how to play or build
Uses whoever he has (aka starters)
Only plays because tendou downloaded and made an account for him
Doesn’t know how to ascend characters or farm
Forgets about talents (me)
Weirdly good RNG and doesn’t realize it 😩
“Let me look at your account wakatoshi-kun”
“Sure”
“You didn’t tell me you had 6 of jean’s Stella fortuna???”
“What’s that?”
Tendou
this man pulls for the seiyuus
Mains childe, hutao, mona for 5 stars
childe and hutao’s instinct based quickswap playstyle works so well for him!
jokes about cosplaying mona then actually does
Knows how to build, grinds, and manages ushijima’s account for him
Probably whales too
Shirabu
Meta meta meta meta
But f2p meta
Loves setting up reactions
More into the lore too and researches theories
Remembers actual names of boss drops
Semi: so how many of those buttplugs do you have again
Shirabu: 💢stop calling them buttplugs, they have actual names 💢
VERY diligent with battle pass, dailies, achievements and spiral abyss full stars
Until he //SPOILERS gets into med school and has no time for shit
Inarizaki
Atsumu
Would have a crush on a character I just know it
Invests heavily on his faves and is great at utilizing each of them
fussy . complains about a certain unit and how they can improve
or complains about how the game can improve to osamu
Osamu: yer just saying that cuz you couldn’t get a high score
Archons main (already saving for the tsaritsa)
Wouldn’t have a main dps but several hard hitting supports
Whale and falls victim to the weapon banner
Osamu
More casual player than Atsumu but still tries to get higher than him in events and spiral abyss
If atsumu’s a whale, osamu’s a dolphin
Great at dodging
Catalyst user!!
Mains ningguang, klee, yanfei + other catalyst supports
Also uses keqing
Kita
the man appreciates routine aka VERY diligent with dailies, battle pass, farming
“if you do things properly results will follow” or whatever quote he said ✨
Starter team but raises other characters for abyss
Reads dialogue and appreciates the plot
Barely gachas
Aran
will defend TO THE DEATH the underappreciated characters
Has empathy for noelle 🥺🥺
Noelle, Barbara, xinyan, bennett, children user 🥺
Talks to every NPC and loves the backstories and lore
also would feel really bad for qiqi
Suna
Uses the tall men and women and builds them all as dps (childe zhongli diluc kaeya beidou ningguang jean lisa rosaria eula)
He’d probably make a support character a dps tbh
Disregards team synergy for the shits but somehow manages to do domains and abyss
Itachiyama
Sakusa
c6 everyone
leaves

Leaving the Grim Reaper on read
Tumblr media
“If Stella Fortuna means ‘lucky star’, then life must have a funny sense of humour.”
Juliet Grames wrote a novel about someone’s life story. Not my favorite book trope, but she has executed it wonderfully.
The book is divided into 4 parts - childhood, youth, maturity and old age - over which the eight deaths are distributed. In chronological order, they are oil burns to the arms, caused by an eggplant (yes.); pigs trampling her and ripping open her guts (ew.); falling and hitting her head on a rock; nearly drowning because the ship she was supposed to be on sank; almost committing suicide because of a dream in which her father raped her; childbirth; choking on a chicken bone and lastly; falling (again), but this time she undergoes surgery (which keeps her alive but she ends up crazy).
These events shape Stella. But it’s mostly because of her father and mother’s relationship that she wishes to be independent. Her father is abusive, has the worst anger issues and quite literally uses his wife’s body whenever he wants to. This is apparently quite common in these Italian families, but it was difficult to read as the event balanced itself on the line between rape and the ‘martial duty’. It is therefore no surprise that Stella refuses to marry Carmelo (she will end up marrying him, of course because her father forces her to), which conflicts profusely with the traditional values of the family.
Most interesting was the way Grames portrayed the villain of the novel: Antonio Fortuna, Stella’s father. She gives characters a solid backstory, explaining their behavior throughout the novel. But no matter how sad, she doesn’t dismiss Antonio’s brutal behavior. “I’m not saying Antonio Fortuna wasn’t a monster. I’m just telling you where the monster came from” (page 100). It is not possible to feel compassion for him. His death is a satisfying one. But the question ‘how could this have happened?’ isn’t left unanswered. In fact, she does this for every question. It is an intelligent way of storytelling and keeping a fast pace; quite often Grames refers to a future event in the timeline, instead of leaving the reader with unanswered questions through the rest of the book. It wasn’t bothersome, there were enough plot twists to keep the suspense. With this, she managed to keep the focus on the important events and quickly go over - but not leave out - the minor ones.
I would also like to mention that the storytelling not only switches perspectives, but also has an incredibly low amount of dialogue. It makes it seem as if someone is telling a family story to you in the literal sense. There is a lot of describing and explaining. It was sometimes a bit tiring, the lack of conversations, but the story was gripping enough to keep me reading it.
To summarize, this book was sometimes difficult to read because of the harsh topics. It is important to get a trigger warning before reading it, I sometimes had to stop because it was so impactful. Hence the decrease of the rating with one star is mainly due to it’s explicit content. I realize that the topics should be discussed because they aren’t fiction, yet I personally wouldn’t have minded if it was to a lesser degree. Final point of critique would be that some parts are too drawn out, less lengthy would have been fine. Overall, Grames has showed with her debut novel that she is able to tell one hell of a story.
Rating: 4/5

Star Citizen Monthly Report: February 2019
February saw Cloud Imperium devs around the world working hard to deliver the incredible content for the soon-to-be-released Alpha 3.5 patch. Progress was made everywhere, from locations like ArcCorp to the gameplay developments afforded by the New Flight Model. Read on for the full lowdown from February’s global workload.
Star Citizen Monthly Report: February 2019
Tumblr media
AI – Character
February’s roundup starts with the AI Team, who made improvements to the existing character collision avoidance system. The changes began with adjustments to the smooth locomotion path, with the data now coming from the collision avoidance calculation to make sure the character has enough free space.
Time was spent generalizing the options a vendor can use so that designers no longer have to write them into the behaviors. Instead, the correct options are automatically selected based on the environment and (eventually) from the shop services.
They’re also restricting combat behavior to allow better scalability when adding new tactics and are investigating some of the bugs found in the Alpha 3.4 release.
Tumblr media
AI – Ships
Throughout February, the AI Team improved various aspects of dogfighting gameplay, including evasive maneuvers. Now, when an AI pilot has an enemy on its tail, it will try to utilize different break-aways with increasing and varied angles. It will also try to keep momentum and chain together attack maneuvers. To achieve this, the team exposed new ‘SmoothTurning’ subsumption tasks to the behavior logic.
When detecting enemy fire, AI pilots will utilize evasive maneuvers to create a diversion.
They also implemented automatic incoming/outgoing ship traffic over planetary landing areas. They are currently generalizing ship behaviors to enable the designers to easily set up traffic on multiple cities, capital ships, and so on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Animation
Last month, Animation provided the remaining animation sets for previous characters already found in the Persistent Universe (PU), including Hurston, Battaglia, and Pacheco. They also finished off a new batch of animations for the ship dealer. Work continues on animations for future yet-to-be-announced characters too, which includes getting approval for the initial poses and animations before going forward with the final clean-up.
American Sign Language (ASL) emotes are being added to the game and are currently being improved with the addition of facial animations.
Finally, Animation is currently syncing with Cinematics for a few interesting segments that backers will get to enjoy soon…
Art – Tech
Tech Art invested significant effort into optimizing rig assets so that they work better with the facial runtime rig logic and the ‘look at’ and ‘mocap’ re-direction components. Since eye contact is one of the fundamental means of human communication, any error or tiny deviation can cause the ‘uncanny valley’ effect and immediately break immersion.
“If the eyes of an actor converge just slightly too much, they appear cross-eyed. However, if they don’t converge enough, they appear to look through you, as if distracted. If the eyelids occlude the character’s iris just a little too much, which, depending on the distance, could amount to just 2-3 pixels vertically, they look sleepy or bored. Conversely, if they expose too much of the cornea, they appear more alert, surprised, or outright creepy.”
So, the alignment of the virtual skeleton’s eye joints with respect to the eyeball and eyelid geometry is of utmost importance. Likewise, the ‘look-at’ system needs to control all relevant rig parameters and corrective blendshapes (not just the rotation of the eyeballs themselves) to create truly-believable runtime re-directions of the mocap animations.
Alongside facial work, the team completed several weapons-related tasks, such as fixing offsets during reload animations and locomotion issues for the pistol set. They also completed R&D related to playing animations in sync with character usables within cinematic scenes and helped Design to unify the character tags in Mannequin.
Art – Environment
Predictably, the Environment Team is racing towards the completion of ArcCorp and Area 18 – they’re currently working with and implementing the custom advertising provided by the UI department. The planet itself is in the final art stage and now includes skyscrapers rising above the no-fly zone to provide the player with landing opportunities and interesting buildings to fly around.
Concurrently, the ‘Hi-Tech’ common elements are steadily progressing, with the transit, habitation, and security areas all moving to the art pass stage. Players will see these common elements (alongside garages and hangars) when they’re added to microTech’s landing zone, New Babbage.
The new transit connection between Lorville’s Teasa spaceport and the Central Business District (CBD) is almost ready for travellers. This route will allow players to move directly between the two locations and bypass L19, cutting travel time for high-end shoppers.
Work on organics is ongoing, as are improvements to planet tech, with the artists hard at work creating a library of exotic-looking flora to fill the biomes of New Babbage with. Players can see it for themselves towards the end of the year.
The community can also look forward to upcoming information on the early work the team has done on procedural caves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Audio
Both the Audio Code Team and the sound designers finished their work on the new camera-shake and ship-vibration systems. Now, when an engine kicks in, the ship shakes and hums. This also extends to the player, with events like a ship powering up causing minor camera shake.
The sound designers also added new sound samples to a range of ships as part of the rollout of the New Flight Model. By adding ‘one-shot’ samples to each of the various thrusters, they brought out more complexity in the sounds heard during flight.
The Audio Team spent the majority of the month creating the sounds of Area 18. Due to the melting pot of ideas and themes present in the new area, the sound designers tested new methods to bring out the unique atmosphere. Additionally, they created the sound profiles and samples for the Gemini S71 assault rifle and Kastak Arms CODA pistol, both of which will appear in the PU and SQ42.
Currently, the Audio Code Team is working towards an updated tool that better allows the sound designers to implement created assets in-engine whilst simultaneously testing how they sound.
Backend Services
Backend Services continued to lay the foundation for the new diffusion network to help scalability for the backend structure of the game. Emphasis is on ensuring the Dedicated Game Servers (DGS) correctly connect to the new diffusion services, particularly the variable, leaderboard, and account services.
February marked the near-end of work on the new Item Cache Service (a massive portion of the backend has now turned micro-service) and began the end-point between DGS and this service, too. As work is completed on the new diffusion services, testing will ensure a smooth transition to the new network.
Support was also added for subsumption services to read directly into the DataCore P4k system for increased efficiency and unification.
With the approaching publish of Alpha 3.5, Backend Services began work on logistics, syncing closely with DevOps to ensure that new services are up and running correctly while maintaining legacy services where necessary.
Community
The team celebrated Valentine’s Day with community-made cards and limited-time ship offers, including Anvil’s F7C-M Heartseeker – a special version of the Super Hornet shooting straight for the heart. During the Be my Valentine greeting card contest, most Citizens got creative with their favorite image editing software, though some went old-school with scissors and crayons to create fantastic crafts to share their love across the galaxy.
Also this month, Argo Astronautics released their latest addition to the ‘verse, the SRV. The ‘Standard Recovery Vehicle’ is built for tugging ships, ground vehicles, and massive cargo containers through the stars using its integrated tractor tech. If you’re looking for more information about this rough and rugged ship, head to the Q&A that answers questions voted-on by the community. As a bonus, Shipmaster General John Crewe stopped by Reverse the Verse LIVE for some in-depth tug-talk.
In the February issue of Jump Point (our subscriber-exclusive magazine), Ben Lesnick took a detailed dive into the ARGO SRV’s design process and went on a worker’s tour of Hurston. The Narrative Team also introduced us to the Human holiday Stella Fortuna and shed light on the history of the revered Rust Society.
A major update to the Star Citizen roadmap gave a look at what’s coming to the Persistent Universe in 2019 and what can be expected in upcoming releases.
Released in January, but worthy of another mention, is the official Star Citizen Fankit, which was put together to help all of you share your enthusiasm and engagement. Star Citizen lives by the support it receives from the community, so take a look at this treasure trove of assets and get creating!
The team is also excited to announce that our physical merchandise will soon be receiving a well-deserved face-lift. Having received a lot of feedback over the years, it’s clear that Citizens are passionate about merch and to make the store experience the best it can be, your input was needed. Thanks to everyone who contributed feedback to our thread on Spectrum!
Tumblr media
Content – Characters
The Character Team revisited the hair development pipeline in February. With the help of the Graphics Team, they developed new tools and shader tech to improve the realism of hair while maintaining quality and performance. More work went into mission-giver Pacheco, including textures and rigging, with her hairstyle being used to trial the new hair pipeline. Work continues on the assets required for DNA implementation and the female player character, while refinement of the Xi’an concept is making great progress.
Tumblr media
Design
Throughout February, Design focused on implementing Area 18’s shops, NPCs, and usables. Last month marked the end of implementation, with March being used for polish to ensure a believable and immersive experience upon release. The team also gained a new member to help with mission implementation and improvement, who is currently setting their sights on the Emergency Communication Network (ECN) mission set.
Regarding the economy, the US Design Team worked with their UK counterparts on the objective criteria and value of objects in-game, laying down the track for acquiring item properties and their values. A system was built to help create an abstract representation, which is both robust and modular enough to allow easy adjustment in the future when the details are finalized.
DevOps
DevOps had a busy month working on the build system and pipeline that supports feature stream development. After several long nights, they rolled out the upgrades and have been happy with the results so far – internal systems are running smoothly without errors and each evolution improves efficiency and storage consumption.
They’re now attempting to further compress existing data which, when multiplied by hundreds of thousands of individual files, will make a real impact to the dev’s daily development efforts.
Engineering
February saw the Engine Team spend time on general Alpha 3.5 support, such as profiling, optimization, and bug fixing. They also improved the instance system used in compute skinning and refactored it on the CPU and shader for better maintainability, created a budget-based output-buffer system for skinning results (so they only have to skin once per frame), made more tangent reconstruction optimizations, and worked on wrap-deformation using the color stream.
Basic HDR display support was added to the editor, as was a new hue-preserving display mapping curve suitable for HDR display output. The team provided material layer support for planet tech v4 and continued to improve character hair, which included initial hair mask, support for edge masking, and pixel depth offset. Game physics is progressing with Projectile Manager 2.0, as well as optimizations to wrapped grids and state updates. Support was added for ocean Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) wave generation to physics buoyancy calculations, as well as exposed optimized terrain meshes.
A major system initialization clean-up was completed as part of an initiative to share core engine functionality with PU services, work began on the lockless job manager (a complete overhaul for faster response in high-load scenarios), and a new load time profiler was created. The team are currently wrapping up the ‘ImGUI’ integration and introducing a temporary allocator for more efficiency when containers are used on stack.
They made the switch to the Clang 6 compiler to build Linux targets (including compilation cleanup of the entire code base) and plan to switch to the latest stable release (Clang 8.x) in the near future.
Finally, they finished a ‘create compile time’ analysis tool (utilizing new Visual C++ front and backend profiler flags) to gather, condense, and visualize reasons for slow compile and link times. As a result, various improvements have already been submitted and further action-items defined.
Features – Gameplay
A large portion of Gameplay Feature’s month was dedicated to implementing the new DNA feature into the character customizer. In addition, the team was responsible for creating and setting up the user interface (UI) and accommodating the female playable character, both of which are scheduled for Alpha 3.5.
Another major focus was on video streaming for comms calls, which consisted of a refactor of the comms component to utilize the voice service call mechanism. Research was made into the VP9 streaming format and video streaming improvements were completed that will be rolled out in the upcoming release.
Lastly, support was given to the US-based Vehicle Features Team, with updates to the turret sensitivity HUD, gimbal assist UI, and the shopping service entity registration.
Features – Vehicles
Gimbal Assist and its related HUD improvements were finalized and polished, allowing for better balancing of this new weapon control scheme. Turrets were also improved, as the team added a HUD and keybinds for input sensitivity, implemented adjustable speeds for gimbal target movement based on proximity to center aim, and fixed bugs with snapping and erratic movement.
A lot of work went into scanning improvements, which included adjusting the area for navpoint scanning, enabling use of the navpoint hierarchy, and adding a Boolean to opt into the scanning data. This endeavor also covered adjustments to make scanning more involving by setting up AI turrets to generate signatures and be scannable and adding specific icons for scanned/unscanned targets. Ping and blob were implemented to display on the radar too, including focus angle and ping fire.
To round out the month, they continuing to make item port tech optimizations, developed tech for utilizing geometry component tags in the paint system, and fixed a handful of crash bugs.
Graphics
Last month, the Graphics Team’s work on the PU was spread between several smaller tasks. There were many shader requests from the artists, such as adding new features to the hard surface shader and ISO support for decals in the forward rendering pipeline.
The team also continued with the CPU optimizations from last month. This included a 3x performance saving on the cost of building per-instance data buffers for the GPU and better support for the depth pre-pass to help occlude hidden parts of the frame with less CPU overheads.
To help the artists optimize their content, the team worked on an improved render-debugging tool that reports how many draw instructions (draw-call) a particular object requires along with a breakdown of why each instruction was needed. Once complete, this will allow the artists to dig into their material and mesh setups to save valuable CPU time.
Level Design
The Level Design Team soldiered on with ArcCorp’s Area 18, bringing the designer whitebox up to greybox. They began planning the modular space stations that will be built this year too, including looking at the libraries, rooms, and content that goes into them. The procedural tool is also now at a stage where they can slowly start ramping up the modular station production.
Live Design
The Live Team refactored existing missions to make them scalable to make more content available in the planetary system (other than Crusader). Significant progress was made on a new drug-stealing mission for Twitch Pacheco, as well as a BlackJack Security counter-mission that tasks less morally-corrupt players with destroying the stash.
Another focus was on implementing a variety of encounters with security forces and bounty hunters when the player holds a high crime stat.
As well as practical work, time was taken to define the next tier of many aspects of the law system, such as punishment, paying fines, bounty hunting, and so on.
Lighting
Last month, the Lighting Team focused on developing the look of Area 18. Lighting Area 18 is a mixture of clean-up work from the previous versions to match new standards and lighting the new exterior layout to a series of targets set by the Art Director. The team is working closely with the Environment Art and VFX teams to ensure that new advertising assets and visual effects ‘pop’ from the environment and provide interesting and varied visuals.
Tumblr media
Narrative
Working closely with the Environment Art and Mission Design teams, February saw the Narrative Team further fleshing out of lore relating to ArcCorp and its moons. From new mission giver contract text to the catchy slogans gracing Area 18’s numerous billboards, a lot of additional lore was created to bring these locations to life.
Additionally, expanded wildline sets for security pilots, bounty hunters, and combat assist pilots were scripted and recorded. The AI and Mission teams will use these sets to begin prototyping and testing out new gameplay for inclusion in future builds.
Also, the Narrative Team made progress on generating the specific text needed for on-screen mission objectives. Currently, this is placeholder text from the designers who worked on levels, but moving forward, the hope is to begin using the proper in-lore objectives.
Player Relations
The Player Relations Team was busy preparing for Alpha 3.5 (including getting ready to test the New Flight Model) as well as boxing off the work created over the holiday period.
“As always, we’d like to point all players to our growing Knowledge Base, which now has 120+ articles and saw almost 450,000 visitors this month! We will continue to grow this by adding more ‘How To’ articles, patch notes, and live service notifications there as well as on Spectrum.”
Props
February saw headway into Area 18’s props: the core street furniture is now in and the team has moved onto the dressing pass, adding in new assets to give life to the streets, alleyways, and landing zone.
As the month closed out, the team jumped into release mode to get a head start squashing bugs and generally tightening up the upcoming release.
QA
Things ramped up on the publishing side in February as the team prepared Alpha 3.5 for the Evocati and PTU. Testing continues on the New Flight Model and other systems as they come online, such as the new weapons, ships, and locations. QA leadership continues to train the newer testers and improve the overall testing process.
The AI Feature Team kept the Frankfurt-based QA testers busy with new features, such as the improved avoidance system and new break-away maneuvers. Testing mainly consists of making sure they’re working as intended, as well as noting visible improvements to what was already in place (in the case of the avoidance system). Combat AI received perception updates which were tested by QA to address issues where the FPS AI would not recognize the player being present in their vicinity.
On the backend, changes to the subsumption visualizer are being tested to ensure no new issues have been introduced in preparation for their full integration into the editor. Testing for ArcCorp and Area 18 is currently underway too.
The Universe Team discovered that mining entities were not appearing in the client due to discrepancies in how they were spawned in the server. This was tracked down and fixed, though testing will continue to make sure it’s working as intended.
Ships
The Vehicle Content Team wrapped up the MISC Reliant Mako, Tana, and Sen variants for Alpha 3.5. They’re now in testing with QA who are addressing bugs before the vehicles go live. The designers and tech artists have been busy with the Origin 300i, which will reach QA for testing in the near future.
Back in the UK, the team continued production on the 890 Jump, bringing more rooms into the final art stage from greybox (including the hangar area). The Carrack is heading towards a greybox-complete state and select areas are being polished for review.
Development continues on the Banu Defender which is utilizing a new style of production that caters to its organic art style. ZBrush is being used to sculpt the interior before transferring the high-density model to 3ds Max, where it is then rebuilt (low-poly) for the game engine. A large portion of the exterior greybox is complete and looking fantastic.
Last but by no means least, the interior updates to the Vanguard wrapped up with essentially the entire area from the cockpit seat backwards being completely redone. This is more than was initially anticipated, but the team feels that it’s worth it. Now that the interior rework has been finalized and the framework for the variants agreed upon, the Ship Team can start on the exterior changes to accommodate them and continue with the variant-specific items.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
System Design
The System Design Team is working on improving and upgrading the no-fly zones used across ArcCorp. Since the existing system now needs to support an entire planet, it has proven quite a challenge.
For social AI, the team’s working on unifying vendor behaviors and making sure they’re built in a modular fashion. For example, the team can easily graft new actions onto the base behavior of a shop keeper to allow them to pick up objects, give them to the player, and interact with things on the counter without having to build new ones from scratch.
As with social AI, the team focused on restructuring FPS AI behaviors to make them more modular, with the goal to make it easier to implement specific chunks of logic. For mining, they added new mineable rocks on ArcCorp’s moons. Wala in particular will have a new type of rock that fits better with the crystalline formations available on the moon.
Finally for System Design, AI traffic over Area 18 is currently being developed. The team’s starting small, with a few ships landing and taking off around the spaceport, but they’re also investigating ways to expand it while being mindful of performance.
Turbulent
RSI Platform: On February 14th, Turbulent supported the announcement of a new flyable variant of the Super Hornet, the F7C-M Heartseeker. They also made major updates to the CMS backend which required all hands on deck.
Services: This month’s game service work was focused around developing support for transporting video streams over the comms channels. This will allow the streaming of a user’s face/in-game texture to another player outside of the bind culling bubble, enabling in-game video calls over wider distances. This method also enables the transmission of in-game video streams to web clients.
Turbulent spent considerable time standardizing services to enable them to run within a new local development environment. This will allow the entire Star Citizen universe’s services to run locally on dev systems to develop and iterate with the entire stack.
The Turbulent Services Team also began work on an administration interface for game designers and game operators to display real-time information about the state of the universe. This application can display information about groups, lobbies, and voice channels along with details of online players, quantum routes, and probability volumes.
Tumblr media
UI
As in January, UI supported the Environment Team with in-fiction advertising and branding for Area 18, including animation and hologram textures. They also made headway on the 3D area map using the concepts shown last month as visual targets. Finally, they began working out how to bring the rental functionality from the Arena Commander frontend to in-game consoles in Area 18.
VFX
The VFX Team updated the existing particle lighting system to a more modern system. The previous version was based on tessellation, which increased the rendering cost and had limitations on shadow resolution. The new one is a global change that will remove the need for tessellation and improve shadow receiving for crisper, smoother shadows. ArcCorp’s Lyria and Wala will be the first moons to use this new particle lighting system when it’s ready for deployment. It will help the particles integrate into the moons more realistically and address issues when the particles have long shadows going through them, such as during sunrise and sunset.
They also continued to iterate on thruster damage effects and began rolling it out to all ships.
Several new weapon effects were worked on, including a new ballistic hand cannon and ballistic assault rifle. They also carried out extensive visual exploration for the new Tachyon energy weapon class.
Finally, significant time was invested in improving the VFX editor’s UI layout and functionality. Although not as glamorous as planet dressing and effects, improving the quality-of-life for artists is important and helps them to work faster too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Weapons
The Weapon Art Team completed the Gemini S71, Kastak Arms Coda, Banu Singe Tachyon cannons, Gallenson Tactical ballistic cannon reworks, and five variants of the Aegis Vanguard nose guns.
Tumblr media

New Project! Dyonisus
Bentornati!
Tumblr media
E ho assemblato tutti i pezzi...
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chiara (StregaCorvina)
Welcoma back! Today I will show you how I made a new cosplay, really really quick because the event was very close! The character is Dyonisus from Kagami No Asobi.
As usual let’s start with the
- step 1: Character analysis
I really liked the shape of the dreess at first, a sort of indian Sari with black, teal fringes and golden decorations: medals, chains, bracelets...I couldn’t wait to start! After checking with the customers, we decided to use a solid color fabric as we really had short time to finish the dress and I wouldn’t have enough time to find a gradinet fabric or to dye it
As for the materials, I choose a mixed silk fabric to recall Indian Saris, black thick satin for the wrap and then I started to wish with all my heart to find quickly teal fringes with the right lenght within the delivery time! (I just visited 6 different suppliers to find them but luckly I managed it! The convention where my customer wanted to wear the dress was really close so I cannot order anything on line)
Then I bought a lot of medals in different shapes to make the jewels, but I didn’t find any bracelets big enough like the characters’ so I decided to do them myself with a golden fabric (leftover from an old Carnival costume)
After gathering all the materials it’s time to start!
As for the pattern, the dress was not particularly hard, being a sari I decided to recall the classic shape making a skirt with elastic band at the waist and a wrap along the waist and the shoulder.
After deciding the basic shape and the draping over the shoulders I made the skirt and started the
- step 2: Wrap on the shoulders
This was the best part of the cosplay, so full of decorations, so royal! As I said the fringes were very hard fo find but after a few researches I finally find them, and meanwhile I bought a very nice golden trim to add over.
After sewing the trim of the fringes I sew this decoration on the black wrap, the same lenght of the sari wrap. Then I used a transparent elastic thread to join the waist and the shoulder to wear the wrap as a strap.
The tayloring part was finished! Time to move on the
- Step 3: Jewels
I started with the chains and the medals: two necklaces, one on the waist, one on the thigh and four ankle bracelets.
I decided to repaint with golden nail polish all the medals because I didin’t like their golden shade to match it with the chains. Then I cut all the chains in the right lenghts and put togher everything.
I’m very happy with the result and I really like the fact that the medals are very different from each other to increase the richness of the dress, after all we are talking about a God!
To finish the jewels only the bracelets were missing so I decided to make them myself because I didin’t find anythig right and I used a golden fabric tha years ago my grandma used to make a Carnival costume form me when I was a Kid (a Fallen Star costume btw)
Bracelets are three overlapping layers decorated with golden thread and wmbroideries on each one. To close them on the back intead of using a zipper or velchro fastener I decided to make an elastic band to hide the closure.
Dyonisus cosplay is done! Next time I will show you all the picture of this work, I hope you liked it!
See ya!

“Look at this flower, isn't it pretty?” you excitedly exclaimed, kamera in hand.
Somewhere in the depths of Avidya Forest, two scholars were documenting the flora and fauna there for their project. One highly motivated to get this over with, the other—
“Is it?” With his eyes barely glancing over to the flower, Al-Haitham merely shrugged. “It looks like a rather average specimen to me.”
“That’s probably because you wouldn't know true beauty even if it stared you right in the face,” you scoffed.
Sometimes you really wanted to kick him where the sun didn’t shine; once for being a pain in the ass to work with and twice for making you fall for him all the same.
And maybe once more for always leaving you guessing, just for good measure. One day, he’d barely give you the time of day to accept the papers you handed him, the next, he’d come and seek you out to have lunch with him.
Seriously, what was his problem? Make up your mind, you dumb—
“Oh yeah?” Al-Haitham’s tone was cocky, challenging even, as he crossed the space between you in long strides. Grabbing a hold of your chin between his thumb, index and middle finger, he effectively made you meet his eyes. “I know you though, don’t I?”
“I- What?” You spluttered, heat flooding between his fingers up your cheeks. Blinking up at him repeatedly, you were trying to gauge his reaction. “What are you trying to say here, Al-Haitham, it's not funny-”
“What am I trying to say? I’ve made it rather obvious, haven’t I?” Cocking an eyebrow at your reaction, you could see the infuriating ghost of a smirk dancing around the corner of his lips. “And I know you’re smart enough to pick up on it. So don’t disappoint me, (y/n), tell me which conclusion you came to based on all the evidence laid out in front of you."
In that particular moment, you had good mind to take a swing at his stupidly handsome face. He was really going to make you repeat that? This jerk, he was enjoying this more than he should have been. Normally, he should be the flustered one after proclaiming something like that!
“Well, do correct me if I’m wrong, Scribe, but it almost sounded as if you called me beautiful. It seems something about my research must have gone amiss, the results simply do not match the gathered information.” You did your best to maintain an even tone and mimic the snobbish speech mannerisms you and your peers mocked your superiors for. “If you’d be so kind as to enlighten me where I might have been led astray in my analysis, I believe your insight would be of utmost importance on this matter.”
“Perhaps you should review your gathered information again, I do believe it matches the presented results, wouldn’t you agree?” Studying your expression carefully, one large hand settled on your waist and you suddenly realised how small the gap between you two had become. „I‘ve been conducting a similar research as of late, all evidence pointing to an outcome not unlike yours; your thoughts on the matter?“
„I concur,“ you breathed out, lost in the depths of emerald and amber. „It seems there might be a correlation between our findings.“
„A most intriguing hypothesis indeed.“ Al-Haitham‘s voice was low, barely above a whisper, but from how he leant closer, you heard him perfectly fine. With your hands on the tight material spanning his solid pectorals, you put up no resistance whatsoever as you willingly let him guide your face closer to his, your noses barely brushing. „Tell me, (y/n), are you willing to put your theory to the test?“
„Only if I‘m working with a willing partner,“ you matched his tone as one of your hands slid up his shoulder and under the fabric of his cape.
Meanwhile, his fingers left your chin in favour of cupping the back of your neck. Between half-lidded eyes, Al-Haitham still couldn’t tear his gaze away from your lips almost touching his. „Haven’t I made myself crystal clear? I wish to explore all possibilities of this experiment with you.“
A gentle tug was all it needed for him to connect your lips with his. At first, his movements were almost timid, cautious in a way you weren’t used to from him. When you pressed your chest closer to his, however, his actions grew bolder as well, stringing you along in a sensual dance.
The heat radiating from both his front and the hand which had sneaked to the small of your back, holding you firmer against him, made your head spin. To combat the dizzying sensation, you dug your fingers into the grey strands in his nape, hoping to ground yourself as your heart soared.
Even as Al-Haitham pulled away until only his breath fanned your cheeks, your mouth stayed slightly parted, eyes fluttering open slowly.
Then, you heard the shutter of a kamera go off as you blinked into the lens of Al-Haitham‘s device. You watched incredulously as he examined the image of your still dazed expression. When he saw you gaping at him, a smug smirk tugged at the corner of his lips.
„A truly beautiful snapshot indeed,“ he mused. „Now, let’s finish up our task here.“
Wrapping his hand around your wrist and bringing it up to his lips, he pressed a fluttering kiss to the sensitive skin.
„After all, my roommate will be gone for quite some time and I have important research to conduct.“

The 2019 harvest
The harvest is a special event. In our case, as it went from morning to evening, it was a special DAY! It's the epilogue of a long year of work by a whole group of people and the end of all waiting and all hopes and worries. For better or worse, it signifies a full stop, the natural conclusion of a cycle through the gathering of the fruit, of the result.
A gloriously sunny day accompanied us through the whole harvest, we couldn't have asked for a better scenario! The sharp and golden light, the warmth of the sun, the nonetheless fresh and terse air, the calm and shimmering sea full of boats cruising around, enjoying the last glimpses of summer. Nobody could object the perfection of this Saturday in September.
Our small team, excited for the challenge, roamed skillfully the vineyard, eagerly collecting the fruits, each bunch of grapes a precious gift saluted with loud cheers of “thank you, thank you!” and, remembering last year, “lucky that you didn't end up in the belly of some wild boar!”.
Some helpers stood out by carrying the 20kg heavy boxes up and down, gathering them near the rack railway that would later transport them down to the road – the fatigue made bearable with plenty of gags and jokes, there are those who lose their scissors and never get them back, those who collect the “biggest” or the “sweetest” bunch, those eating more grapes than they'd ever liked to…
A quick – but not TOO quick lunch break with a delicious and creamy dish of pasta and beans made with our very own Lemmen tomatoes and fragrant with basil, sage and rosemary momentarily interrupts the hard work and invigorates the whole team. A glass of wine, some sweets and a lot of laughs and then the work starts again until the end in the late afternoon.
Stop, everybody, we're done! The vineyard has been stripped of its fruits, a sensation of relief and gratitude spreads around, the light anxiety disappears...”Did it go well? Are we satisfied? How many kilos?
How will be the end result?” Whatever the answers, we're finished: “Rien ne va plus”.
A big “thank you” to everybody for the collaboration, for participating in the last chapter of this adventure, cutting and putting aside each bunch as if it was a small reward. How great it was to do this together!
It's life that gives! How often it's just us that are unable to take…
Soon the leaves will wither and the plants will shed their robes, ready for a new pruning, a new year of hope towards the goal of the harvest.
Yet again the finish and the beginning coincide, tangled and inseparable in the same mystery.
Thank you Stella, we're waiting for the “spirit” of all this: the wine, our first, true, natural wine of the 2019 vintage.
Siamo soddisfatti? Quanti quintali?

The 20 Books of Summer reading challenge has now ended and I’m so happy to say that, for the first time ever, I read all of the books on my planned TBR! Woo Hoo! I’ve always managed to read at least 20 books over the summer but I have never, ever managed to stick to my planned list. I picked 20 physical books this time so it was an even bigger challenge for me so I really am proud of myself for completing it. I didn’t get around to reviewing the books I read but I do intend to review at least some of them soon.
Before I go any further, a huge thank you to Cathy at 746 Books for running this challenge. I really do love taking part each year.
Here are the books I read over the summer (in the order I read them).
The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
The Seven or Eight Deaths of Stella Fortuna by Juliet Grames
The Trouble With Goats and Sheep by Joanna Cannon
Lyrebird by Cecelia Ahern
Normal People by Sally Rooney
Reservoir 13 by Jon McGregor
A Question of Trust by Penny Vincenzi
In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume
The July Girls by Phoebe Locke
Still Lives by Maria Hummell
Take Me In by Sabine Durrant
Inhuman Resources by Pierre LeMaitre
The Way I Used to Be by Amber Smith
After the Eclipse by Sarah Perry
The Word for Woman is Wilderness by Abi Andrews
Histories by Sam Guglani
We Own the Sky by Luke Allnutt
A Keeper by Graham Norton
Nevermoor #1: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend
Take Courage: Anne Bronte and the Art of Life by Samantha Ellis
I have to say that I enjoyed every single book that was on my summer TBR, which is really something! I think if I was pushed to pick my favourites I would have to say that my favourite two novels were The Goldfinch and The Trouble With Goats and Sheep, and my two favourite non-fiction books were After the Eclipse and Take Courage. It was bittersweet reading A Question of Trust with it being the final book by Penny Vincenzi but I enjoyed it so much that I now want to make time to re-read some of her other novels.
The page count for my 20 books came to 7597, which is no surprise really considering how long The Goldfinch is and A Question of Trust is pretty huge too!
The fact that this year I made time to read my planned summer TBR as well as the other books that I needed to read (books for review and blog tour books) meant I was successful at completing this TBR. I’ve never done well with TBRs – I’m one of those people that absolutely loves planning what I’m going to read, and then the minute the challenge starts I want to read everything but what’s on my list! This time I planned it better and I feel so satisfied at getting to books that had been on my TBR bookcase for quite a while. I had a couple of books on my list that I’ve put off because they felt like they might be more difficult reads (like The Word for Woman is Wilderness for example) but I found I enjoyed them so much. It reminded me that I perhaps need to make a seasonal TBR to remind me of the books that I want to read but am intimidated by.
This year’s 20 Books of Summer has been absolutely wonderful and I already can’t wait for the next one! How did your summer reading go? Did you take part in the challenge? I hope you read some amazing books. 🙂
My 20 Books of Summer Wrap-Up! The 20 Books of Summer reading challenge has now ended and I'm so happy to say that, for the first time ever, I read all of the books on my planned TBR!

My 2021 in reading
Tumblr media
I did not send up a reading goal, but am still quite proud to tell you that I finished 42 books this year.
At the start of the year, I read a novel my friend wrote. It’s called Bankley and it is awesome. It includes a love triangle, dresses like in Bridgerton and revolutions. And it made me cry, so it easily passed 4 stars. I’m not sure what my exact rating would be, but I can promise that I loved it. She has been asking me about writing a review of her book on my blog, so I hope this little special mention will make her happy. :)
I also read some non-fiction about mental health, collections of poetry (I hope you stay - Courtney Peppernell & Ik heb de liefde lief) and some old favorites (The Aeneid & Alice in Wonderland). I haven’t given these books a rating either, since I felt indifferent about them and/or didn’t feel like I really had an opinion to share.
And I had only one book I did not finish: De lessen van mevrouw Lohmark by Judith Schalansky. It failed to catch my attention and I didn’t feel like finishing it. The story wasn’t intriguing to me and after a while it got tedious, so I returned it to the library.
The full list of the other books I read is listed below. Some previously appeared on my blog as reviews, you can click on the links if you want to.

Stefano Paganini
