A few years ago I managed to accidentally select, for my trip to Italy, only books that end in the main character getting guillotined. At the request of friends, here is the reading list :

L'étranger (The Stranger), Albert Camus.

Le dernier jour d'un condamné (Last Day of a Condemned Man), Victor Hugo

Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black), Stendhal

Any biography of Robespierre, I recommend Peter McPhee or Hervé Leuwers

If you're in the mood for some commentary on the guillotine in literature, then go for Les échafauds du romanesque, Patrick Wald Lasowski

In my case, guillotine summer was heightened by my deciphering of headlines in a kiosk in Pompeii to learn that Notre-Dame de Paris had burst into flame. The world we currently live in will no doubt fill your summer with similar experiences so don't worry. Maybe some blood-red cherries will make an agreeable complement to your reading.
