Post-series Halloween discussion of vampires and a 25 year old argument

She’s tearing around the house, cape flying out behind her, and it’s clear she’s had far too much candy already, but Scully can only hope that it’ll wear her little body out and she’ll sleep through the night for once. Of course, it’s an unrealistic hope - the kid inherited her father’s distaste for sleep, and she’s all but given up on expecting early nights and lay-ins. Fake fangs sink into her wrist and she looks down with the intent to scold, only to soften at the mischievous hazel eyes gazing up at her. ‘No biting, kiddo.’
‘But I’m a vampire!’ She lisps, and, honestly, what hope is there for the world with the amount of cuteness before her going into it. Maybe she’s getting soft in her old age, but Scully’s convinced that her daughter could take over the whole world with just a sly smile and a flash of innocent eyes. 
‘Yes, you are, darling,’ she lifts her onto her hip, ‘but vampires don’t bite their mommies.’
‘Actually, Renesmee did,’ Jackson points out, ruffling his sister’s hair as he passes, chucking her a chocolate kiss as he takes one for himself from the bowl.
And of course that’s when Mulder has to stick his head around the corner, ‘firstly, Renesmee was only half vampire. And secondly, more importantly, she was fictional. Twilight vampires don’t count.’ 
‘How come? What makes one vampire design more valid than another?’
‘They’re glittery , Jackson.’
‘And? Maybe, Stephanie Meyer was actually being incredibly clever and you’re just prejudiced.’
Scully frowns, ‘isn’t she pro-life and mormon? Either way, please don’t get your father upset about vampires again.’
‘What’s that supposed to mean?’ they cry out in harmony, flinging hands into the air. 
‘I do not get upset about vampires.’ Scully raises an eyebrow at him, and he holds up a defensive hand, ‘I’m merely passionate.’ He’s outdone himself with the family’s costumes this year, a clan of vampires in thrifted old suits and deep red gowns, black capes with red lace stitched around the collar. It surprised Scully when he suggested the first year that he wanted to try and make a Halloween costume for the baby, surprised her even more when he taught himself to sew with YouTube videos and presented her with a tiny astronaut costume. And each year since he’s improved, making whatever the kid asks for. ‘You’re not dressed.’
‘It’s a dress and a cape, Mulder, it’s not going to take me five minutes. Besides, we’ve still got an hour before the party, and the more you get her excited, the more riled up she’s gonna be in the car.’
‘She’s fine, aren’t you, Beanieboo,’ he kisses her forehead before she squirms out of her mother’s arms, dropping to the floor and going back to running circles around the living room. ‘There’s green contacts on the counter in the bathroom. Jackson, there’s some for you, too, if you want.’
He looks up at his parents sceptically, ‘you know, I don’t think green eyes are part of the lore.’
‘Vampires have green eyes, Jackson. I know: I’ve seen them.’
Scully sighs, shakes her head, ‘vampires can have whatever colour eyes you want them to, because they’re not real.’
Mulder groans and drops his head back, yelling out to the ceiling, ‘how are you still denying it after all these years? We met them. You had a thing for one.’
‘Sheriff Hartwell was not a vampire. And, more importantly, I didn’t have a thing for him.’
‘Oh, my god. Then how do you explain what happened?’ it’s like nothing’s changed. They’re married and they live in a little house with a meadow and two kids, it’s twenty five years later, but they’re still having the same old argument, and he for one wouldn’t change a thing.
She looks at him, disbelieving, ‘we were drugged, Mulder. Chloral hydrate. I even have the lab reports to prove it.’
‘Doesn’t explain how Ronnie Strickland survived a stake to the heart.’
‘As I stated in my report at the time, we can fairly confidently hypothesise that you missed his heart.’
‘Oh, we can “fairly confidently hypothesise,” can we? You declared him dead.’ 
‘Yes, and for that, I am gravely sorry. As I did back then, I theorise that he went into shock, his heart stopped for a moment whilst I was checking for his pulse, and then, perhaps, his heart…restarted again.’
‘Spontaneously?’
‘Potentially…’
‘Oh, and nobody noticed? Not the paramedics, not the mortuary staff?’
‘He was in a coma. His life signs were so low they didn’t register, but he was still ticking over, in the background.’
Mulder scoffs, shakes his head, ‘and you think that’s likely?’
‘Well, stranger things have happened.’
‘I mean, it does seem pretty implausible,’ Jackson comments from his perch on the back of the sofa. He’s grabbed a bag of popcorn from the kitchen and is feeding it to his sister as they watch the debate.
The glare Jackson gets from his mother is like nothing he’s seen before, ‘oh, so you’re more willing to believe in vampires?’
He shrugs, ‘I exist.’
‘You’re a miracle, that’s different.’
‘Now, how come miracles exist, but vampires don’t?’ Mulder asks, stealing a handful of popcorn.
‘Miracles are an act of God.’
Jackson shakes his head, ‘nun-uh, can’t use God as a get out of jail free card; it’s too Descartesian.’
‘“Too Descartesian”? How is it “too Descartesian” ?’
Mulder gives her a shit-eating grin and high-fives his son, ‘Descartes had a habit of using God to get out of sticky fallacies. Ergo , it’s too Descartesian.’
‘So, by your logic, if I can’t use God to justify unexplained happenings, you can’t use vampires?’
‘Nope. I have rational reason to believe the population of Chainey, Texas were, in fact, vampires.’
‘What rational reason could you possibly have?’
‘Fang marks.’
‘Ronnie was wearing fake fangs, Mulder. Less convincing ones, might I add, than you’ve made for all of us.’
‘Okay. Just the fact that there were bite marks, that it was very clear they were drinking people's blood.’
‘ Simulated bite marks. Besides, cannibalism doesn’t necessitate vampirism.’
At this point, the five-year-old asks a whispered ‘what’s cabinateism?’ To her brother, and he grins, gnashes his teeth as he tickles her, and hisses, ‘it means eating people, like I’m gonna do to you when I’ve fattened you up nicely with all this candy.’ She squeals and runs away, peels of laughter following her around the living room as he lopes off to chase her, and the vampire debate halts for a moment for both parents to watch, a mix of amusement and concern playing across each of their faces. 
‘Do you think she’s too young to hear all this?’
‘Mm. Probably. Do you think it’s why she doesn’t sleep?’
‘Mm. Probably not. She doesn’t have nightmares.’
‘She’s fine, right?’
‘She’s laughing.’
‘Yeah, she’s fine,’ he pulls his wife in for a kiss, grins when she pulls back.
‘The population of the town of Dudley, Arkansas, were eating people, and they weren’t vampires.’
‘No, but they did have extended lifespans. It’s an interesting possibility to consider, though; the idea that cannibalism and vampirism could be linked. I mean, Barbara Beaumont looked like she was in her early thirties when she was eighty.’
‘She was a mentally ill woman who was heading a cult.’
‘Okay. What about Countess Báthory? She bathed in the virginal blood of young girls to keep her young.’
‘Mulder, firstly, no, she didn’t. There’s no mention in the historical texts of bathing in young girls blood until many years after her death. Secondly, whilst, yes, she probably did torture and murder some girls, the voracity with which she reportedly did so has probably been greatly overstated. And, thirdly, she was fifty when she was arrested, and wealthy. Any reports of her remaining youthful probably had to do with the fact that she wasn’t living in poverty, and most of the witnesses were. What are you looking at?’
He’s grinning at her, boyish and charming still to this day, ‘I don’t think I’ve ever been more attracted to you than I am right now.’
‘Oh yeah?’ she quirks an eyebrow, gives a sly smirk. There’s a crimson gown hanging up in their wardrobe that he’s been talking about for months. She’s going to powder her face and curl her hair and wear red lace panties underneath. She’s going to put in the fangs he’s made for her, and ignore how itchy the coloured contacts are, and spend the whole night encouraging her kid to hurtle around the Halloween party at full speed so that when they come home, she sleeps, and they have a guaranteed four hours in which they can lock the bedroom door. ‘So what you’re saying is, I really don’t need to go and put on my costume?’ His face falls, and her grin widens as she pats him on the chest, ‘don’t worry, I’m heading up now. Hey, why don’t you tell the kids about the Flukeman whilst you wait?’

1. Best book you’ve read so far : Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots - and I definitely recommend the audio if you can (some of the voices the narrator did reminded me of like cartoon villains and I loved it😂)
2. Best sequel you’ve read so far : Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo - I’ve read a few but this one’s still top of the list
3. New release you haven’t read yet but want to : The Isles of the Gods by Amie Kaufman - just ordered it too 😂
4. Most anticipated release for second half of the year : A curse for true love by Stephanie Garber - like I’ve already ordered 3 copies 😅
5. Biggest disappointment : Babel by R. F. Kuang - honestly I have many disappointments to choose from but this feels like the biggest 🤷‍♀️😓
6. Biggest surprise : How Lucky by Will Leitch - not what I was expecting, but that was probably my fault for not reading the description better 😂 (I was expecting mc to be a grouchy old man … and he’s only 26🤷‍♀️) very good book, audio was a lot of fun too 👍
7. Favorite New Author : Little Thieves by Margaret Owen - quickly ordered the sequel and am excited I already have some of their other books on my shelf (moving them closer to my top tbr 😂)
8. Newest Fictional Crush : The Chemistry of Love by Sariah Wilson - still looking for my Marco 😂
9. Newest Favorite Character : Court of the Undying Seasons by A. M. Strickland - Kashire was a LOT 😂

11. A book that made you happy : Three Kisses, One Midnight by Roshani Chockshi - picking one that isn’t already mentioned and I was kind of surprised by , really cute

Favorite adaptation : actually haven’t been watching anything except Owl House lately 😅, i did see the Dungeons and Dragons movie (if that counts, though I’ve never read or played any D&D before) I do want to beg everyone to read my newest WEBTOON obsession Cursed Princess Club by LambCat (I fear we’re near the end though 😭)
13. Prettiest cover : Eternally Yours by Patrice Caldwell - it’s an anthology and it’s so pretty 😂
14. A book you need to read before the end of the year : Garden of the Cursed by Katy Rose Pool - another anticipated release that actually come out next week, I liked her there will come a darkness series and I hope I’ll love this one too 🤞

Wrestling in 2023
A discussion group that I belong to conducts an annual poll of that year's high and low points of pro wrestling. That poll then gives out awards to recognize those highs and lows. These are the Carny Awards of 2023.
Best Male AEW Wrestler
**WINNER: Swerve Strickland: 48.1%** Bryan Danielson: 37% Orange Cassidy: 11% Jon Moxley: 3.7% "Hangman" Adam Page: 0% Maxwell Jacob Friedman: 0%
It was Swerve's year off of the Texas Deathmatch he had with Hangman at Full Gear, his showing in the Continental Classic, the incredible video of his and AR Fox's attack on Nick Wayne in his garage gym, and burying Keith Lee for refusing to do his job. I personally think Swerve's character is a bit all over the place, swerving from cartoonish villainy to getting cheers from the crowd. Danielson, supposedly in his last full active year in wrestling, made it one to remember with matches against Rush, MJF, Ricky Starks, Kazuchika Okada, Zack Sabre Jr., Eddie Kingston, and many more. Orange Cassidy held up AEW as best as he could with his International title reign, while Moxley remained the steady headliner. 
Best Male WWE Superstar
**WINNER: Gunther: 74.1%** Sami Zayn: 11.1% Seth Freakin Rollins: 7.4% Brock Lesnar: 3.7% Roman Reigns: 3.7% Cody Rhodes: 0%
Gunther runs away with the category this year. He consistently delivers in the ring, and hopefully bigger things are in store for the Intercontinental Champion. Sami Zayn continued to ride the momentum from last year, but he’s receded into the background. Seth Freakin Rollins tries his best with the fake world title belt that is held hostage by Roman Reigns. Brock Lesnar did his thing with Cody earlier in the year. LOL Cody Rhodes.
Best Other Male Wrestler
**WINNER: Will Ospreay: 55.6%** Mistico: 14.8% Rocky Romero: 11.1% Alex Shelley: 7.4% Sanada: 7.4% Krule: 3.7%
Billy Sex Pig takes the category in his last year before he moves over to the AEW category for 2024. Given that he probably has the best match of 2023 in whatever company he worked in (NOAH, Impact, RevPro, 1PW, OTT, NJPW, and AEW), it’s well deserved. Mistico’s and Rocky Romero’s strong showings here reflect CMLL’s very good year. Alex Shelley was a surprisingly good main eventer for Impact, while Sanada tried his best with his buddies in NJPW. I’m glad that the Krule nominator got to vote for Krule. 
Best Female AEW Wrestler
**WINNER: Hikaru Shida: 32.1%** “Timeless” Toni Storm: 25% Julia Hart: 21.4% Kris Statlander: 17.9% Emi Sakura: 3.6%
Hikaru Shida told the voters that anyone else winning the category wouldn’t work for her, brother. Going from the best wrestler in the Outcasts to working with Juice Robinson in NJPW Strong shows to embracing the Timeless Toni gimmick meant that Toni Storm’s 2023 was a land of contrasts. Love it or hate it, you’ll have to accept that Julia Hart is one of the bright spots of AEW’s women’s division along with Kris Statlander, who was the TBS Champion for most of the year. Emi Sakura was denied Queen and London, but she got some votes from this crowd. 
Best Female WWE Superstar
**WINNER: Rhea Ripley: 51.9%** Iyo Sky: 18.5% Tiffany Stratton: 14.8% Becky Lynch: 7.4% Asuka: 3.7% Bianca Belair: 3.7%
People love Mami, as demonstrated by Rhea Ripley’s decisive win in this category. Iyo Sky won the Money in the Bank briefcase, the women’s title, and jumped off of a cage in a trash can this year, but she couldn’t win this category. Tiffany Stratton is the brightest prospect in NXT. Lynch, Asuka, and Belair all did various things in 2023. 
Best Other Female Wrestler
**TIE: Athena and Giulia: 33.3%** Chihiro Hashimoto: 14.8% Tam Nakano: 11.1% Stephanie Vaquer: 7.4% Mercedes Mone: 0%
Putting Athena in this category was meant to reflect the fact that she was stuck unseen on ROH for most of the year except for her PPV matches against Willow Nightingale and Billie Starkz. Nonetheless, she was able to tie Giulia, the brightest star of Stardom. Chihiro Hashimoto continues to toil in relative obscurity in the joshi world, while 2023 was not Tam Time even though she beat Giulia at All-Star Queendom this year. Stephanie Vaquer is picking up titles and attention in CMLL. Mercedes Mone used up her health Flexible Spending Account this year due to injuries. 
Best Tag Team
**TIE: The Astronauts (Fuminori Abe and Takuya Nomura), FTR (Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood), Judgment Day (Finn Balor and Damien Priest), and The Gunns (Austin and Colten Gunn): 21.4%** M3K (Susumu Mochizuki and Yasushi Kanda): 10.7% ABC (Chris Bey and Ace Austin): 3.6%
One of the nominations lamented that it hasn’t been a great year for tag team wrestling, and a four-way tie for best tag team is a great indicator for that. The Astronauts are the best tag team in Japan outside of Dragongate, while Judgment Day is probably the best tag team in WWE.. The Gunns and FTR vie for that claim in AEW. M3K held the Twin Gates scene steady for most of 2023 in Dragongate, while ABC proved that the Bullet Club still had some life in them in Impact.
The "Hot Take" Most Overrated Wrestler of the Year
**WINNER: CM Punk: 37.9%** Maxwell Jacob Friedman: 27.6% Skye Blue: 20.7% Jey Uso: 6.9% Roman Reigns: 6.9% Carmelo Hayes: 0%
One Bill Phil’s controversial 2023 ends with the “Hot Take” Carny Award. MJF got the ball and all the rope he could hang himself with in 2023, and that ended disastrously for him (lost the title and now out injured). Skye Blue, for some reason, worked more matches in AEW than any other wrestler except for Orange Cassidy, whose gimmick this year was that all of his title defenses were wearing him down. Jey Uso couldn’t go to Canada for Elimination Chamber because of his DUIs, but he was able to wrestle one of Roman Reigns’s few singles matches in 2023. Carmelo Hayes is fine.
The "Drizzling Shits" Award for Worst On-Screen Performer
**TIE: Wardlow and Saraya: 22.2%** Adam Cole: 18.5% “Timeless” Toni Storm: 14.8% Skye Blue: 11.1% Maxwell Jacob Friedman: 11.1%
Wardlow seems like a shell of himself, and Saraya is one of the worst active wrestlers in a major company in 2023. Adam Cole is annoying during promos and boring in matches. Storm is wrestling to the Timeless Toni gimmick, which means that both her in-ring work and promos are now bad. Skye Blue’s persistent presence is a testament that thirst always wins, while MJF’s ideas and philosophy about what makes good professional wrestling were bad even though he had a great year in the ring.
Most Improved Wrestler
**TIE: The Gunns (Austin and Colten Gunn) and Julia Hart: 27.6%** Dominik Mysterio: 20.7% Shota Umino: 13.8% Yota Tsuji: 10.3% Chris Hero: 0%
The Gunns are now a respectable tag team, while Julia Hart is one of the bright spots in the AEW women’s roster. Dominik Mysterio benefits from WWE’s production team’s ability to make canned heat sound real. Two of the Reiwa Three Musketeers, Shota Umino and Yota Tsuji, impressed voters. Chris Hero came out of retirement to wrestle in 2023, so that’s an improvement over not wrestling in 2022.
The "Jim Ross" Award for Please Retire
**WINNER: Jim Ross: 27.6%** Tommy Dreamer: 20.7% Ric Flair: 20.7% Bully Ray: 13.8% Kevin Kelly: 13.8% Matt Hardy: 3.4%
Jim Ross wins his eponymous category this year, but Ric Flair and Tommy Dreamer aren’t far behind at all. Bully Ray somehow main evented in Impact this year, while Kevin Kelly was the Q-pilled voice of AEW Collision before he was demoted and pushed aside by Tony Schiavone. Matt Hardy is somehow still wrestling in 2023; judging by how Ric Flair, Tommy Dreamer, and Bully Ray are still on the list, one can assume that Hardy will still be here in years to come.
The "Tony Khan Forgets I Exist" Award for Most Underutilized Performer
**WINNER: Konosuke Takeshita: 34.5%** Willow Nightingale: 31% Pac: 17.2% Akira Tozawa: 6.9% Rush: 6.9% AR Fox: 3.4%
The fact that this category is dominated by AEW wrestlers is an indictment on who gets air time on Dynamite, Collision, and Rampage. Remember when Takeshita beat Kenny Omega in a singles match on a PPV? Remember when Nightingale had a great match with Athena? Remember Pac? Tozawa makes the best of his morsels in WWE, while Rush might have learned that the best way is to make no waves at work. AR Fox reportedly got on the company’s bad side over his passport issue prior to All Out, and he’s still in the dog house.
The "King Kong Bundy WrestleMania 2 to 3" Award for Biggest Fall from Grace
**WINNER: CM Punk: 34.5%** Wardlow: 24.1% Maxwell Jacob Friedman: 17.2% ROH: 17.2% Tom Lawlor: 6.9% Drew McIntyre: 0%
CM Punk returned from injury on a show that he was allowed to run, tried to start a feud with MJF, tried to get the Young Bucks to agree to an on-air feud with him, fought Jack Perry backstage at All Out, got fired from AEW, and slunk back to WWE because he had nowhere else to go to make the kind of salary that he wanted. Wardlow cooled off even before his injury, and the reaction to his return from injury has been anemic; using the same job matches that he had at the start of his last run doesn’t help. MJF’s flavor of ice cream turned out to taste like garbage waiting for collection on a summer day. ROH went from hot matches between FTR and the Briscoes to a cold, empty house at Final Battle 2023. Tom Lawlor has had the worst luck with matches in AEW and ROH. Drew McIntyre is fine.
Best Gimmick
**WINNER: Christian Cage: 71.4%** Swerve Strickland: 14.3% “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio: 7.1% Julia Hart, spooky witch: 3.6% CM Punk being insufferable: 3.6% Just 5 Guys: 0%
The Patriarchy is alive and well according to the Carny Award voters. Christian Cage was a consistent highlight for AEW in 2023, above Swerve Strickland, who came on strong with much help from Prince Nana and his dance. Dirty Dom is around, trying to pretend to be sleazy. Julia Hart is the de facto leader of the House of Black. I don’t think CM Punk being insufferable is a gimmick; that might just be how he is. LOL Just 5 Guys.
The "Bray Wyatt Is Sister Abigail" Award for Worst Gimmick
**WINNER: The Devil: 38.5%** “Timeless” Toni Storm: 23.1% The Brochachos: 19.2% Danhausen in general, specifically on X formerly known as Twitter: 7.7% The Acclaimed: 3.8% Skye Blue is now Spooky Skye Black: 3.8% “Neck Strong” Roderick Strong: 3.8%
MJF’s vision for professional wrestling dominated this category, with a combined 65.3% between The Devil, the Brochachos, “Neck Strong” Roderick Strong, and the Acclaimed, who were adjacent to MJF’s vision and still awful on their own. 60-years old Billy Gunn is the hardest pushed aspect of the Acclaimed, and the team’s gimmick needs to evolve. Evolving can go wrong, however, as seen in “Timeless” Toni Storm and spooky Skye Blue. Danhausen is an annoying presence in general, but he’s especially bad on X.
Geek of the Year
**WINNER: Kaito Kiyomiya: 51.7%** Lexis King: 24.1% Adam Cole: 13.8% Danhausen: 6.9% Akira Tozawa: 3.4% JD McDonaugh: 0%
Poor Kaito Kiyomiya. Sacrificed to Keiji Mutoh’s vanity and unloved in NOAH, he might be better off jumping to Dragongate or AJPW permanently. Lexis King declared that he would be different than his father by ripping off another of his father’s gimmicks, and his aesthetic choices are definitely choices one could make. Danhausen is a geek, and Tozawa is treated as a geek because he’s Asian and in WWE. Even the nominator for JD McDonaugh found him unworthy of a vote in this category, which might make him the biggest geek of all.

I’d assume that voters did the Prince Nana dance while they voted for Swerve’s theme music. “Many Men” should be the Gunns’ permanent entrance theme. Julia Hart’s theme fits her well, while Nakamura’s theme remains bombastic. TMDK’s theme also fits them, and we all wish it will be Hayter Time soon.
Promotion of the Year
**TIE: WWE and CMLL: 25.9%** AEW: 18.5% AJPW: 11.1% World Wonder Ring Stardom: 11.1% NJPW: 7.4%
CMLL rightfully wins the promotion of the year category; what else can you say about a company that fills Arena Mexico every Friday and is doing well in Puebla and Guadalajara. WWE managed to tie this year based on a slightly improved product after officially installing Paul Levesque into the booker’s seat. AEW had some of the best shows of the year, but other issues knocked it to third. AJPW had a rebound year in 2023. Stardom was plagued by injuries, but it’s still going strong. NJPW has seen better days. 
Best Event
**WINNER: AEW/NJPW Forbidden Door 2023: 37%** AEW All In 2023: 22.2% CMLL 90th Anniversary Show: 18.5% WWE SummerSlam: 11.1% AEW Wrestle Dream 2023: 7.4% AEW Revolution 2023: 3.7%
Even though AEW and NJPW felt like they had down years, their collaboration bore fruit in Forbidden Door 2023, highlighted by the Bryan Danielson vs. Kazuchika Okada, Kenny Omega vs. Will Ospreay, and CM Punk vs. Satoshi Kojima matches. All In 2023 at Wembley placed second despite its whimpering ending that involved Adam Cole and MJF. The CMLL 90th Anniversary Show peaked higher with the Volador Jr. vs. Angel de Oro hair vs. hair match and the Templario vs. Dragon Rojo Jr. mask vs. mask match, but I personally would have picked the Night of Champions show from September 29. Reigns vs. Uso headlined SummerSlam. Wrestle Dream gave us Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Danielson, and Revolution gave us MJF vs. Danielson and Moxley vs. Hangman in a Texas Deathmatch.
The "WWE Promotes Murderous Dictatorships" Award for Angle That Made You Ashamed To Be A Wrestling Fan
**WINNER: Somehow, Vince McMahon returned.: 42.9%** Ric Flair joins AEW: 21.4% Adam Cole and MJF’s Brochachos storyline, including the Roderick Strong parts: 14.3% NJPW Strong books Fred Rosser to kiss Toni Storm without her consent during his match against Juice Robinson: 10.7% CM Punk gets himself fired from AEW and signs with WWE: 7.1% Juice Robinson threatens to use a roll of quarters against MJF: 3.6%
Though Vince McMahon had retired in disgrace from WWE, he held controlling shares of the stock, so it wasn’t shocking when he pressed this leverage to install some cronies to the board and return to power. Tony Khan insists that AEW is getting paid to use Ric Flair, but just because you’re getting paid doesn’t mean that you have to do the thing. Remember when MJF and Adam Cole went to Outback Steakhouse and carried an inflatable crocodile around to prepare for their match against Aussie Open? NJPW Strong thought that having a gay Black man kiss a white woman against her will to distract her husband during the men’s match was a good idea. CM Punk did it again in 2023. MJF also thought it was a good idea to tap into rise in antisemitism in the US with his angle.

Once again, Shida Hogan told the booker that she’s not doing the job. Christian Cage’s anti-dead dad gimmick became something more when he became the father that everyone deserves. Prince Nana’s dance is delightful. The sight of Jay Lethal, Satnam Singh, Sonjay Dutt, Jeff Jarrett, Mark Briscoe, and a baby working on the Briscoes’ farm was wholesome. Moxley earned many fines on commentary. Nobody cares about why Punk is back in WWE.
"What a Maneuver!" Award for Coolest Move/Dive
**WINNER: El Hijo del Vikingo’s 630 senton: 25%** Mascara Dorada’s cutter over the barricade: 17.9% Neon’s triple jump moonsault: 14.3% Brody King’s Cradle Shock: 14.3% Logan Paul and Ricochet collide in mid-air: 14.3% Mirai Maiumi’s lariat: 10.7% The Creeds’ Cannonball Dive: 3.6%
The best flips are in the world of lucha libre, but it’s cool to see a nice lariat like Mirai Maiumi’s. Brody King’s Cradle Shock looks great, and it’s still fun to see big guys like the Creeds fly.
The "I'm Marking Out, Bro" Legit Shook Moment of the Year
**WINNER: Bryan Danielson comes out to “The Final Countdown” at Forbidden Door 2023: 31%** CM Punk is back in WWE: 27.6% Cody Rhodes loses at WrestleMania, gets hit with a thrown rubber chicken intended for Roman Reigns: 20.7% Shun Skywalker betrays Diamante and causes Diamante to lose his mask: 17.2% Sanada beats Okada for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship: 3.4% Jay White’s debut in AEW: 0%
After all this time and all the talk about how expensive it was to license the song, Tony Khan brought out the checkbook for Danielson’s entrance in his match against Okada at Forbidden Door. Punk returned to WWE after burning his AEW bridge. Cody Rhodes couldn’t #FinishTheStory, and insult was added to injury when the rubber chicken landed. The most compelling villain in professional wrestling, Shun Skywalker, stunned fans when he turned on his squadmate Diamante during the Mask Vs. Mask Steel Cage Five Way Survival match at Dragongate Kobe Pro-Wrestling Festival 2023. Sanada was able to finish the story by beating Okada for the top prize in NJPW. People continue to Breed with the Switchblade to this day.

- Our show opened this week with a much different look. Our new hosts Daphne Oz, Veda Scott, Sam Leterna, and Alyssa Marino entered into a brightly colored set with a large marble topped kitchen island complete with stove top. Behind them were a stainless steel refrigerator and double oven. They made their way through the kitchen area and took their seats at an oversized oval shaped wood desk with a large screen behind it reading "THE RING" in a playful font surrounded by some fun emoji-like images of colorful lucha libre masks, sliced watermelons, and hibiscus plants. - Daphne Oz welcomed us to a new format for The Great Pro-Wrestling Adventure Hour presented by The Ring! Daphne said The Ring is your new home for the happenings behind the grapplings, they'll take on the biggest trends straight from your feed, a glimpse at another side of your favorite grunts and groaners, all this with a focus on pop culture, wellness, food, and of course, fun! Daphne introduced us to the other three members of The Ring Crew. - A new intro for The Great Pro-Wrestling Adventure Hour presented by The Ring aired set to the single mix of Belinda Carlisle's cover of "Band Of Gold." - The panel kicked things off by discussing the biggest news of the week, their Spotify Wrapped! Sam Leterna couldn't believe how much bubblegrunge she listened to this year. Alyssa Marino revealed that the place that listened just like her was…Burlington, Vermont? So random! The Ring Crew teased later in the show they'll have an expert on to discuss the developing major health story we've all been reading about.

- When we returned from break The Ring panel moved to the kitchen for a cooking segment. Veda Scott said today they'll be showing off some quick and easy options for wrestling fans to get those resolutions off on the right foot with three Superfoods With Attitudes. Veda showed us how to skip the burgers and try some bulgur with a delicious bulgur pilaf. - Alyssa Marino brought out a special guest to help prepare this next dish, it's Starboy Charlie who will help prepare a versatile Starfruit Salsa that can be paired with salads or fish. As Starboy was put to work slicing starfruit, he was asked about a match Kerry Morton made for next week after being disappointed in The Southern 6 losing to Black Generation International at the Thanksgiving Tussle. It will be Starboy Charlie and Alex Taylor against Giant Baba Yaga and Fuego Del Sol. Charlie was quick to point out that Alex Taylor was the first person eliminated from their team. - Daphne Oz showed us a great way to integrate healthy berries into your holiday parties with adorable Santas made with a strawberry body, coconut beard, a raspberry hat, and blueberry boots.

- The Ring Crew brought out a special guest to discuss this very concerning health news we've all been reading about. Of course they mean Hangman Page drinking Swerve Strickland's blood. Daphne Oz brought out CORE owner and her father Dr. Mehmet Oz. Dr. Oz discussed the dangers of drinking human blood and the many pathogens that can be found in blood. Dr. Oz also touched on the dangers of the many cuts wrestlers seem to suffer near their hair lines. Staph bacteria can often be found in human hair follicles and can easily travel from the hair into these open wounds.

- Before the next match, Shaw Mason and Hunter Holdcraft made their way to ringside. Mason implored referee Scarlette Donovan to take extra time checking Bosby for foreign objects and to check under the ring for any hidden weapons.

Tim Bosby vs. Jack Vaughn Tim Bosby defeated Jack Vaughn with a ripcord lariat. - The hosts of The Ring announced that on Christmas night in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania the 2023 Trios Kingdom winners THE 37KAMIINA of Yuki Ueno, MAO, and Toy Kojima will be returning to CORE. CORE matchmakers wanted a match between them and Black Generation International, but Titus Alexander is already scheduled for a Coal Miner’s Glove match against Eddie Kingston and unfortunately Kaito Ishida and Flamita are the only other two members available on that date. So while we await opponents to be named, in honor of THE 37KAMIINA and the Japanese Christmas tradition of fried chicken, next week Daphne Oz will be showing off some of her favorite fried chicken recipes for you to try this holiday season.

Counterpath Press’s series of now thirteen computer-generated books, Using Electricity, offers a refreshing alternative to the fantasia of terror and wonder that we’ve all been subjected to since the public release of ChatGPT. The books in this series present us with wide-ranging explorations into the potential interplay between human language and code. Although code-based work can be dauntingly hermetic to the noncoder, all computationally generated or mediated writing is the result of two fundamental decisions that remain in the hands of the human author: defining the source text(s) (the data) and choosing the processes (the algorithms or procedures) that operate on them. A text generator like ChatGPT uses brute force on both sides—enormous amounts of text vacuumed from the internet are run through energy-intensive pattern-finding algorithms—to create coherent, normative sentences with an equivocal but authoritative tone. The works in Using Electricity harness data and code to push language into more playful and revealing imaginative territory.
Many of Using Electricity’s authors mobilize computational processes to supercharge formal constraints, producing texts that incessantly iterate through variations and permutations. In The Truelist, Nick Montfort, the series editor, runs a short Python script to generate pages of four-line stanzas comprising invented compound words. “Now they saw the lovelight, / the blurbird, / the bluewoman facing the horse, / the fireweed.” The poem is a relentless loop—repeating this same structure as it churns through as many word combinations as it can find. Rafael Pérez y Pérez’s Mexica uses a pared-down, culturally specific vocabulary and a complex algorithm to generate short fairy tale–like stories. One begins, “The princess woke up while the songs of the birds covered the sky.” The skeletal story structure swaps different characters and actions as the variations play out. It’s like watching a multiversal performance of the same puppet show.
I find that often I am not reading these works for meaning as much as for pattern, which is at the heart of how computation operates. Allison Parrish’s fantastic Articulations brings us frighteningly deep into the core of computational pattern searching. Drawing from a corpus of over two million lines of poetry from the Project Gutenberg database, she takes us on a random walk through “vector space.” Put simply, this is the mathematical space in which computers plot similarities between different aspects of language—the sound, the syntax, whatever the programmer chooses. The result is a dizzying megacollage/cluster-mash-up of English poetry in which obsessive and surprising strings constantly emerge—a vast linguistic hall of mirrors. “In little lights, nice little nut. In a little sight. In a little sight, in a little sight, a right little, tight little island. A light. A light. A light. A light. A light.”
Many of these works are indebted to the wider traditions of procedural, concrete, conceptual, and erasure poetry, while making use of code’s unique possibilities for play, chance, variation, and repetition. Stephanie Strickland’s Ringing the Changes draws its mathematical ordering process from a centuries-old practice of English bell ringing. In Experiment 116, Rena Mosteirin plays a game of translation telephone by running Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 116” through multiple languages in Google Translate and back into English.
The three most recent titles, released in April, comprise some of the series’s most varied and dynamic approaches to digital poetics. There is an updated edition of Image Generation by the pioneering literary artist John Cayley; as well as Qianxun Chen and Mariana Roa Oliva’s Seedlings, which uses the metaphor of seeds and trees, and “grows” word structures that evoke the dynamics and fragility of plant life. One of the most exciting titles thus far, especially from the perspective data source, is Arwa Michelle Mboya’s Wash Day, in which she threads together transcripts of YouTube videos of Black hair vloggers sharing their Wash Day rituals. Counterpath Press’s series of now thirteen computer-generated books, Using Electricity, offers a refreshing alternative to the fantasia of terror and wonder that we’ve all been subjected to since the public release of ChatGPT. The books in this series present us with wide-ranging explorations into the potential interplay between human language and code. Although code-based work can be dauntingly hermetic to the noncoder, all computationally generated or mediated writing is the result of two fundamental decisions that remain in the hands of the human author: defining the source text(s) (the data) and choosing the processes (the algorithms or procedures) that operate on them. A text generator like ChatGPT uses brute force on both sides—enormous amounts of text vacuumed from the internet are run through energy-intensive pattern-finding algorithms—to create coherent, normative sentences with an equivocal but authoritative tone. The works in Using Electricity harness data and code to push language into more playful and revealing imaginative territory.
Many of Using Electricity’s authors mobilize computational processes to supercharge formal constraints, producing texts that incessantly iterate through variations and permutations. In The Truelist, Nick Montfort, the series editor, runs a short Python script to generate pages of four-line stanzas comprising invented compound words. “Now they saw the lovelight, / the blurbird, / the bluewoman facing the horse, / the fireweed.” The poem is a relentless loop—repeating this same structure as it churns through as many word combinations as it can find. Rafael Pérez y Pérez’s Mexica uses a pared-down, culturally specific vocabulary and a complex algorithm to generate short fairy tale–like stories. One begins, “The princess woke up while the songs of the birds covered the sky.” The skeletal story structure swaps different characters and actions as the variations play out. It’s like watching a multiversal performance of the same puppet show.
I find that often I am not reading these works for meaning as much as for pattern, which is at the heart of how computation operates. Allison Parrish’s fantastic Articulations brings us frighteningly deep into the core of computational pattern searching. Drawing from a corpus of over two million lines of poetry from the Project Gutenberg database, she takes us on a random walk through “vector space.” Put simply, this is the mathematical space in which computers plot similarities between different aspects of language—the sound, the syntax, whatever the programmer chooses. The result is a dizzying megacollage/cluster-mash-up of English poetry in which obsessive and surprising strings constantly emerge—a vast linguistic hall of mirrors. “In little lights, nice little nut. In a little sight. In a little sight, in a little sight, a right little, tight little island. A light. A light. A light. A light. A light.”
Many of these works are indebted to the wider traditions of procedural, concrete, conceptual, and erasure poetry, while making use of code’s unique possibilities for play, chance, variation, and repetition. Stephanie Strickland’s Ringing the Changes draws its mathematical ordering process from a centuries-old practice of English bell ringing. In Experiment 116, Rena Mosteirin plays a game of translation telephone by running Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 116” through multiple languages in Google Translate and back into English.
The three most recent titles, released in April, comprise some of the series’s most varied and dynamic approaches to digital poetics. There is an updated edition of Image Generation by the pioneering literary artist John Cayley; as well as Qianxun Chen and Mariana Roa Oliva’s Seedlings, which uses the metaphor of seeds and trees, and “grows” word structures that evoke the dynamics and fragility of plant life. One of the most exciting titles thus far, especially from the perspective data source, is Arwa Michelle Mboya’s Wash Day, in which she threads together transcripts of YouTube videos of Black hair vloggers sharing their Wash Day rituals. A s you begin your study of this text, you might be wondering, “What is organizational behavior and why does it matter to me?” We get to the definition of organizational behavior, or OB, in a moment, but let’s begin with the end in mind—why OB matters, and what the study of OB offers you. First, a bit of history. Until the late 1980s, business school curricula emphasized the technical aspects of management, focusing on economics, accounting, finance, and quantitative techniques. Course work in human behavior and people skills received relatively 1 M01_ROBB3859_14_SE_C01.indd 1 19/09/16 3:58 PM 2 Part 1 • Understanding Yourself and Others less attention. Since then, however, business schools have realized the significant role interpersonal skills play in determining a manager’s effectiveness. In fact, a survey of over 2,100 CFOs across 20 industries indicated that a lack of interpersonal skills is the top reason why some employees fail to advance.1 One of the principal applications of OB is toward an improvement in interpersonal skills. Developing managers’ interpersonal skills helps organizations attract and keep high-performing employees, which is important since outstanding employees are always in short supply and are costly to replace. But the development of interpersonal skills is not the only reason OB matters. Secondly, from the organizational standpoint, incorporating OB principles can help transform a workplace from good to great, with a positive impact on the bottom line. Companies known as good places to work—such as Genentech, the Boston Consulting Group, Qualcomm, McKinsey & Company, Procter & Gamble, Facebook, and Southwest Airlines2—have been found to generate superior financial performance.3 Third, there are strong associations between the quality of workplace relationships and employee job satisfaction, stress, and turnover. For example, one very large survey of hundreds of workplaces and more than 200,000 respondents showed that social relationships among coworkers and supervisors were strongly related to overall job satisfaction. Positive social relationships also were associated with lower stress at work and lower intentions to quit.4 Further research indicates that employees who relate to their managers with supportive dialogue and proactivity find that their ideas are endorsed more often, which improves workplace satisfaction.5 Fourth, increasing the OB element in organizations can foster social responsibility awareness. Accordingly, universities have begun to incorporate social entrepreneurship education into their curriculum in order to train future leaders to address social issues within their organizations.6 This is especially important because there is a growing need for understanding the means and outcomes of corporate social responsibility, known as CSR.7 We discuss CSR more fully in Chapter 3. We understand that in today’s competitive and demanding workplace, managers can’t succeed on their technical skills alone. They also have to exhibit good people skills. This text has been written to help both managers and potential managers develop those people skills with the knowledge that understanding human behavior provides. In so doing, we believe you’ll also obtain lasting skills and insight about yourself and others. Management and Organizational Behavior The roles of a manager—and the necessary skills needed to perform as one—are constantly evolving. More than ever, individuals are placed into management positions without management training or informed experience. According to a large-scale survey,
more than 58 percent of managers reported they had not received any training and 25 percent admitted they were not ready to lead others when they were given the role.8 Added to that challenge, the demands of the job have increased: the average manager has seven direct reports (five was once the norm), and has less management time to spend with them than before.9 Considering that a Gallup poll found organizations chose the wrong candidate for management positions 82 percent of the time,10 we conclude that the more you can learn about people and how to manage them, the better prepared you will be to be that right candidate. OB will help you get there. M01_ROBB3859_14_SE_C01.indd 2 19/09/16 3:58 PM Chapter 1   • What Is Organizational Behavior? 3 Organizational Behavior (OB) Defined Organizational behavior (OB) is a field of study that investigates the impact individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior within organizations, for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving an organization’s effectiveness. That’s a mouthful, so let’s break it down. OB is a field of study, meaning that it is a distinct area of expertise with a common body of knowledge. What does it study? It studies three determinants of behavior within organizations: individuals, groups, and structure. In addition, OB applies the knowledge gained about individuals, groups, and the effect of structure on behavior in order to make organizations work more effectively. To sum up our definition, OB is the study of what people do in an organization and the way their behavior affects the organization’s performance. Because OB is concerned specifically with employment-related situations, it examines behavior in the context of job satisfaction, absenteeism, employment turnover, productivity, human performance, and management. Although debate exists about the relative importance of each, OB includes these core topics:11 • • • • • • • • organizational behavior A field of study that investigates the impact individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior within organizations, for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving an organization’s effectiveness. Motivation Leader behavior and power Interpersonal communication Group structure and processes Attitude development and perception Change processes Conflict and negotiation Work design Effective versus Successful Managerial Activities Now that we understand what OB is, we may begin to apply some concepts. Consider the important issue of effective management. What makes one manager more effective than another? To answer the question, Fred Luthans, a prominent OB researcher, and his associates looked at what managers do from a unique perspective.12 They asked, “Do managers who move up most quickly in an organization do the same activities and with the same emphasis as managers who do the best job?” You might think the answer is yes, but that’s not always the case. Luthans and his associates studied more than 450 managers. All engaged in four managerial activities: 1. Traditional management. Decision making, planning, and controlling. 2. Communication. Exchanging routine information and processing paperwork. 3. Human resources (HR) management. Motivating, disciplining, managing conflict, staffing, and training. 4. Networking. Socializing, politicking, and interacting with outsiders. The “average” manager spent 32 percent of his or her time in traditional management activities, 29 percent communicating, 20 percent in HR management activities, and 19 percent networking. Among managers who were successful (defined in terms of speed of promotion within their organizations), networking made the largest relative contribution to success
and HR management activities made the least relative contribution, which is the opposite of the average manager. Indeed, other studies in Australia, Israel, Italy, Japan, and the United States confirm the link between networking, social relationships, and success within an organization.13 However, Luthans and associates found that among effective managers (defined in terms of quantity and quality of their performance and the satisfaction and commitment of their employees), communication made the largest relative contribution and networking the least. This finding is more in line with the average manager, with the important exception of increased emphasis on communication. The connection between communication and effective managers is clear. M01_ROBB3859_14_SE_C01.indd 4 Whether you’ve explicitly thought about it before or not, you’ve been “reading” people almost all your life by watching their actions and interpreting what you see, or by trying to predict what people might do under different conditions. The casual approach to reading others can often lead to erroneous predictions, but using a systematic approach can improve your accuracy. Underlying the systematic approach is the belief that behavior is not random. Rather, we can identify fundamental consistencies underlying the behavior of all individuals and modify them to reflect individual differences. These fundamental consistencies are very important. Why? Because they allow for predictability. Behavior is generally predictable, and the systematic study of behavior is a means to making reasonably accurate predictions. When we use the term systematic study, we mean looking at relationships, attempting to attribute causes and effects, and basing our conclusions on scientific evidence—that is, on data gathered under controlled conditions and measured, and interpreted, in a rigorous manner. Evidence-based management (EBM) complements systematic study by basing managerial decisions on the best available scientific evidence. For example, we want doctors to make decisions about patient care based on the latest available evidence, and EBM argues that managers should do the same, thinking more scientifically about management problems. A manager might pose a question, search for the best available evidence, and apply the relevant information to the question or case at hand. You might wonder what manager would not base decisions on evidence, but the vast majority of management decisions are still made “on the fly,” with little to no systematic study of available evidence.15 Systematic study and EBM add to intuition, or those “gut feelings” about what makes others (and ourselves) “tick.” Of course, the things you have come to believe in an unsystematic way are not necessarily incorrect. Jack Welch (former CEO of General 19/09/16 3:58 PM Chapter 1   • What Is Organizational Behavior? 5 Electric) noted, “The trick, of course, is to know when to go with your gut.”16 But if we make all decisions with intuition or gut instinct, we’re likely working with incomplete information—like making an investment decision with only half the data about the potential for risk and reward. Big Data Data, the foundation of EBM, have been used to evaluate behavior since at least 1749, when the word “statistic” was coined to mean a “description of the state.
”17 Statistics back then were used for purposes of governance, but since the data collection methods were clumsy and simplistic, so were the conclusions. “Big data”—the extensive use of statistical compilation and analysis—didn’t become possible until computers were sophisticated enough to both store and manipulate large amounts of information. The use of big data began with online retailers but has since permeated virtually every business. Current Usage No matter how many terabytes of data firms collect or from how many sources, the reasons for data analytics include: predicting events, from a book purchase to a spacesuit malfunction; detecting how much risk is incurred at any time, from the risk of a fire to that of a loan default; and preventing catastrophes large and small, from a plane crash to the overstocking of a product.18 With big data, U.S. defense contractor BAE Systems protects itself from cyber-attacks, San Francisco’s Bank of the West uses customer data to create tiered pricing systems, and London’s Graze.com analyzes customers’ preferences to select snack samples to send with their orders.19 New Trends The use of big data for understanding, helping, and managing people is relatively new but holds promise. In fact, research on 10,000 workers in China, Germany, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States indicated that employees expect the next transformation in the way people work will rely more on technological advancements than on any other factor, such as demographic changes.20 It is good news for the future of business that researchers, the media, and company leaders have identified the potential of data-driven management and decision making. A manager who uses data to define objectives, develop theories of causality, and test those theories can determine which employee activities are relevant to the objectives.21 Big data has implications for correcting management assumptions and increasing positive performance outcomes. Increasingly, it is applied toward making effective decisions (Chapter 6) and managing organizational change (Chapter 17). It is quite possible that the best use of big data in managing people will come from OB and psychology research where it might, for instance, even help employees with mental illnesses monitor and change their behavior.22 Limitations As technological capabilities for handling big data have increased, so have issues of privacy and appropriate application. This is particularly true when data collection includes surveillance instruments. For instance, an experiment in Brooklyn, New York, has been designed to improve the quality of life for residents, but the researchers will collect potentially intrusive data from infrared cameras, sensors, and smartphone Wi-Fi signals.23 Through similar methods of surveillance monitoring, a bank call center and a pharmaceutical company found that employees were more productive with more social interaction, so they changed their break time policies so more people took breaks M01_ROBB3859_14_SE_C01.indd 5 19/09/16 3:58 PM 6 Part 1 • Understanding Yourself and Others together. They then saw sales increase and turnover decrease. Bread Winners Café in Dallas, Texas, constantly monitors all employees in the restaurant through surveillance and uses that data to promote or discipline its servers.24 Privacy and application issues abound with these techniques, but abandoning them is not necessarily the fix. An understanding of deeper OB issues can help find the productive balance. These big data tactics and others might yield results—and research indicates that, in fact, electronic performance monitoring does increase task performance and citizenship behavior (helping behaviors towards others), at least in the short term. But critics point out that after Frederick Taylor introduced surveillance analytics in 1911 to increase productivity through monitoring and feedback controls, his management control techniques were surpassed by Alfred Sloan’s greater success with management outcomes, achieved by providing meaningful work to employees.
25 We are not advising you to throw intuition out the window. In dealing with people, leaders often rely on hunches, and sometimes the outcomes are excellent. At other times, human tendencies get in the way. What we are advising is to use evidence as much as possible to inform your intuition and experience. The prudent use of big data, along with an understanding of human behavioral tendencies, can contribute to sound decision making and ease natural biases. That is the promise of OB. Disciplines That Contribute to the OB Field OB is an applied behavioral science built on contributions from a number of behavioral disciplines, mainly psychology and social psychology, sociology, and anthropology. Psychology’s contributions have been principally at the individual or micro-level of analysis, while the other disciplines have contributed to our understanding of macro concepts such as group processes and organization. Exhibit 1-1 is an overview of the major contributions to the study of OB. Psychology psychology The science that seeks to measure, explain, and sometimes change the behavior of humans and other animals. Psychology seeks to measure, explain, and sometimes change the behavior of humans and other animals. Contributors to the knowledge of OB are learning theorists, personality theorists, counseling psychologists, and, most important, industrial and organizational psychologists. Early industrial and organizational psychologists studied the problems of fatigue, boredom, and other working conditions that could impede efficient work performance. More recently, their contributions have expanded to include learning, perception, personality, emotions, training, leadership effectiveness, needs and motivational forces, job satisfaction, decision-making processes, performance appraisals, attitude measurement, employee-selection techniques, work design, and job stress. Social Psychology social psychology An area of psychology that blends concepts from psychology and sociology to focus on the influence of people on one another. One major study area is change—how to implement it and how to reduce barriers to its acceptance. Social psychologists also contribute to measuring, understanding, and changing attitudes; identifying communication patterns; and building trust. Sociologists have contributed to OB through their study of group behaviors in organizations, particularly formal and complex organizations. Perhaps most importantly, sociologists have studied organizational culture, formal organization theory and structure, organizational technology, communications, power, and conflict. sociology The study of people in relation to their social environment or culture. Anthropology Anthropology is the study of societies in order to learn about human beings and their activities.
Anthropologists’ work on cultures and environments has helped us understand differences in fundamental values, attitudes, and behavior among people in different countries and within different organizations. Much of our current understanding of organizational culture, organizational climate, and differences among national cultures is a result of the work of anthropologists or those using their methods. anthropology The study of societies to learn about human beings and their activities. There are Few Absolutes in OB Laws in the physical sciences—chemistry, astronomy, physics—are consistent and apply in a wide range of situations. They allow scientists to generalize about the pull of gravity or to be confident about sending astronauts into space to repair satellites. Human beings are complex, and few, if any, simple and universal principles explain human behavior. Because we M01_ROBB3859_14_SE_C01.indd 7 19/09/16 3:58 PM 8 Part 1 • Understanding Yourself and Others contingency variables Situational factors or variables that moderate the relationship between two or more variables. are not alike, our ability to make simple, accurate, and sweeping generalizations about ourselves is limited. Two people often act very differently in the same situation, and the same person’s behavior changes in different situations. For instance, not everyone is motivated by money, and people may behave differently at a religious service than they do at a party. This doesn’t mean, of course, that we can’t offer reasonably accurate explanations of human behavior or make valid predictions. It does mean that OB concepts must reflect situational, or contingency, conditions. We can say x leads to y, but only under conditions specified in z—the contingency variables. The science of OB was developed by applying general concepts to a particular situation, person, or group. For example, OB scholars would avoid stating that everyone likes complex and challenging work (a general concept). Why? Because not everyone wants a challenging job. Some people prefer routine over varied work, or simple over complex tasks. A job attractive to one person may be unattractive to another; its appeal is contingent on the person who holds it. Often, we find both general effects (money does have some ability to motivate most of us) and contingencies (some of us are more motivated by money than others, and some situations are more about money than others). We best understand OB when we realize how both (general effects and the contingencies that affect them) often guide behavior. Challenges and Opportunities for OB Understanding organizational behavior has never been more important for managers. Take a quick look at the dramatic changes in organizations. The typical employee is getting older; the workforce is becoming increasingly diverse; and global competition requires employees to become more flexible and cope with rapid change. As a result of these changes and others, employment options have adapted to include new opportunities for workers. Exhibit 1-2 details some of the types of options individuals may find offered to them by organizations or for which they would like to negotiate. Under each heading in the exhibit, you will find a grouping of options from which to choose—or combine. For instance, at one point in your career you may find yourself employed full time in an office in a localized, nonunion setting with a salary and bonus compensation package, while at another point you may wish to negotiate for a flextime, virtual position and choose to work from overseas for a combination of salary and extra paid time off. In short, today’s challenges bring opportunities for managers to use OB concepts. In this section, we review some—but not nearly all—of the critical developing issues confronting managers for which OB offers solutions or, at least, meaningful insights toward solutions. Continuing Globalization Organizations are no longer constrained by national borders. Samsung,
the largest South Korean business conglomerate, sells most of its products to organizations in other countries; Burger King is owned by a Brazilian firm; and McDonald’s sells hamburgers in 118 countries on 6 continents. Even Apple—arguably the U.S. company with the strongest U.S. identity—employs twice as many workers outside the United States as it does inside the country. And all major automobile makers now manufacture cars outside their borders; Honda builds cars in Ohio, Ford in Brazil, Volkswagen in Mexico, and both Mercedes and BMW in the United States and South Africa. The world has become a global village. In the process, the manager’s job has changed. Effective managers anticipate and adapt their approaches to the global issues we discuss next. Working with People from Different Cultures In your own country or on foreign assignment, you’ll find yourself working with bosses, peers, and other employees born and raised in different cultures. What motivates you may not motivate them. Or your communication style may be straightforward and open, which others may find uncomfortable and threatening. To work effectively with people from different cultures, you need to understand how their culture and background have shaped them and how to adapt your management style to fit any differences. Adapting to Differing Cultural and Regulatory Norms To be effective, managers need to know the cultural norms of the workforce in each country where they do business. For instance, in some countries a large percentage of the workforce enjoys long holidays. There are national and local regulations to consider, too. Managers of subsidiaries abroad need to be aware of the unique financial and legal regulations applying to “guest companies” or else risk violating them. Violations can have implications for their operations in that country and also for political relations between countries. Managers also need to be cognizant of differences in regulations for competitors in that country; many times, understanding the laws can lead to success or failure. For example, knowing local banking laws allowed one multinational firm—the Bank of China—to seize control of a storied (and very valuable) London building, Grosvenor House, from under the nose M01_ROBB3859_14_SE_C01.indd 9 19/09/16 3:58 PM 10 Part 1 • Understanding Yourself and Others of the owner, the Indian hotel group Sahara. Management at Sahara contended that the loan default that led to the seizure was a misunderstanding regarding one of their other properties in New York.26 Globalization can get complicated.
Workforce Demographics The workforce has always adapted to variations in the economy, longevity, birth rates, socioeconomic conditions, and other changes that have a widespread impact. People adapt to survive, and OB studies the way those adaptations affect individuals’ behavior. For instance, even though the 2008 global recession ended years ago, some trends from those years are continuing: many people who have been long unemployed have left the workforce,27 while others have cobbled together several part-time jobs28 or settled for ondemand work.29 Further options that have been particularly popular for younger educated workers have included obtaining specialized industry training after college,30 accepting full-time jobs that are lower-level,31 and starting their own companies.32 As students of OB, we can investigate what factors lead employees to make various choices and how their experiences affect their perceptions of their workplaces. In turn, this can help us predict organizational outcomes. Longevity and birth rates have also changed the dynamics in organizations. Global longevity rates have increased by six years in a very short time (since 1990),33 while birth rates are decreasing for many developed countries; trends that together indicate a lasting shift toward an older workforce. OB research can help explain what this means for employee attitudes, organizational culture, leadership, structure, and communication. Finally, socioeconomic shifts have a profound effect on workforce demographics. For example, the days when women stayed home because it was expected are just a memory in some cultures, while in others, women face significant barriers to entry into the workforce. We are interested in how these women fare in the workplace, and how their conditions can be improved. This is just one illustration of how cultural and socioeconomic changes affect the workplace, but it is one of many. We discuss how OB can provide understanding and insight on workforce issues throughout this text. Workforce Diversity workforce diversity The concept that organizations are becoming more heterogeneous in terms of gender, age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and other characteristics. One of the most important challenges for organizations is workforce diversity, a trend by which organizations are becoming more heterogeneous in terms of employees’ gender, age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and other characteristics. Managing this diversity is a global concern. Though we have more to say about it in the next chapter, suffice it to say here that diversity presents great opportunities and poses challenging questions for managers and employees. How can we leverage differences within groups for competitive advantage? Should we treat all employees alike? Should we recognize individual and cultural differences? What are the legal requirements in each country? Does increasing diversity even matter? It is important to address the spoken and unspoken concerns of organizations today. Social Media As we discuss in Chapter 11, social media in the business world is here to stay. Despite its pervasiveness, many organizations continue to struggle with employees’ use of social media in the workplace. For instance, in February 2015, a Texas pizzeria fired an emp­loyee M01_ROBB3859_14_SE_C01.indd 10 19/09/16 3:58 PM Chapter 1   • What Is Organizational Behavior? 11 before her first day of work because she tweeted unflattering comments about her future job. In December 2014, Nordstrom fired an Oregon employee who had posted a personal Facebook comment seeming to advocate violence against white police officers.34 These examples show that social media is a difficult issue for today’s managers, presenting both a challenge and an opportunity for OB. For instance, how much should HR look into a candidate’s social media presence? Should a hiring manager read the candidate’s Twitter feeds, or just do a quick perusal of his or her Facebook profile? Managers
need to adopt policies designed to protect employees and their organizations with balance and understanding. Once employees are on the job, many organizations have policies about accessing social media at work—when, where, and for what purposes. But what about the impact of social media on employee well-being? One recent study found that subjects who woke up in a positive mood and then accessed Facebook frequently found their mood worsened during the day. Moreover, subjects who checked Facebook frequently over a two-week period reported a decreased level of satisfaction with their lives.35 Managers—and OB— are trying to increase employee satisfaction, and therefore improve and enhance positive organizational outcomes. We discuss these issues further in Chapters 3 and 4. Employee Well-Being at Work One of the biggest challenges to maintaining employee well-being is the reality that many workers never get away from the virtual workplace. while communication technology allows many technical and professional employees to do their work at home, in their cars, or on the beach in Tahiti, it also means many feel like they’re not part of a team. “The sense of belonging is very challenging for virtual workers, who seem to be all alone out in cyberland,” said Ellen Raineri of Kaplan University, and many can relate to this feeling.36 Another challenge is that organizations are asking employees to put in longer hours. According to one recent study, one in four employees shows signs of burnout, and two in three report high stress levels and fatigue.37 This may actually be an underestimate because workers report maintaining “always on” access for their managers through e-mail and texting. Finally, employee well-being is challenged by heavy outside commitments. Millions of single-parent employees and employees with dependent parents face significant challenges in balancing work and family responsibilities, for instance. As you’ll see in later chapters, the field of OB offers a number of suggestions to guide managers in designing workplaces and jobs that can help employees deal with work–life conflicts. Positive Work Environment A growing area in OB research is positive organizational scholarship (POS; also called positive organizational behavior), which studies how organizations develop human strengths, foster vitality and resilience, and unlock potential. Researchers in this area say too much of OB research and management practice has been targeted toward identifying what’s wrong with organizations and their employees. In response, they try to study what’s good about them.38 Some key subjects in positive OB research are engagement, hope, optimism, and resilience in the face of strain. Researchers hope to help practitioners create positive work environments for employees. M01_ROBB3859_14_SE_C01.indd 11 positive organizational scholarship An area of OB research that concerns how organizations develop human strengths, foster vitality and resilience, and unlock potential. 19/09/16 3:58 PM 12 Part 1 • Understanding Yourself and Others Although positive organizational scholarship does not deny the value of the negative (such as critical feedback), it does challenge researchers to look at OB through a new lens and pushes organizations to make use of employees’ strengths rather than dwell on their limitations. One aspect of a positive work environment is the organization’s culture, the topic of Chapter 16. Organizational culture influences employee behavior so strongly that organizations have employed “culture officers” to shape and preserve the company’s personality.39 Ethical Behavior ethical dilemmas and ethical choices Situations in which individuals are required to define right and wrong conduct. In an organizational world characterized by cutbacks, expectations of increasing productivity, and tough competition; it’s not surprising many employees feel pressured to cut corners, break rules, and engage in other questionable practices. Increasingly
they face ethical dilemmas and ethical choices in which they are required to identify right and wrong conduct. Should they “blow the whistle” if they uncover illegal activities in their companies? Do they follow orders with which they don’t personally agree? Should they “play politics” to advance their careers? What constitutes good ethical behavior has never been clearly defined and, in recent years, the line differentiating right from wrong has blurred. We see people all around us engaging in unethical practices—elected officials pad expense accounts or take bribes; corporate executives inflate profits to cash in lucrative stock options; and university administrators look the other way when winning coaches encourage scholarship athletes to take easy courses or even, in the recent case at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill, sham courses with fake grades.40 When caught, we see people give excuses such as “Everyone does it” or “You have to seize every advantage.” Today’s manager must create an ethically healthy climate for employees in which they can do their work productively with minimal ambiguity about right and wrong behaviors. Companies that promote a strong ethical mission, encourage employees to behave with integrity, and provide strong leadership can influence employee decisions to behave ethically.41 Classroom training sessions in ethics have also proven helpful in maintaining a higher level of awareness of the implications of employee choices as long as the training sessions are given on an ongoing basis.42 In upcoming chapters, we discuss the actions managers can take to create an ethically healthy climate and help employees sort through ambiguous situations. Coming Attractions: Developing An OB Model We conclude this chapter by presenting a general model that defines the field of OB and stakes out its parameters, concepts, and relationships. By studying the model, you will have a good picture of how the topics in this text can inform your approach to management issues and opportunities. Inputs Inputs are the variables like personality, group structure, and organizational culture that lead to processes. These variables set the stage for what will occur in an organization later. Many are determined in advance of the employment relationship. For example, individual diversity characteristics, personality,
and values are shaped by a combination of an individual’s genetic inheritance and childhood environment. Group structure, roles, and team responsibilities are typically assigned immediately before or after a group is formed. Finally, organizational structure and culture are usually the result of years of development and change as the organization adapts to its environment and builds up customs and norms. inputs Variables like personality, group structure, and organizational culture that lead to processes. Processes If inputs are like the nouns in OB, processes are like verbs. Processes are actions that indi­viduals, groups, and organizations engage in as a result of inputs and that lead to certain outcomes. At the individual level, processes include emotions and moods, motivation, perception, and decision making. At the group level, they include communication, leadership, power and politics, and conflict and negotiation. Finally, at the organizational level, processes include HR management and change practices. Outcomes are the key variables that you want to explain or predict, and that are affected by some other variables. What are the primary outcomes in OB? Scholars have emphasized individual-level outcomes, such as attitudes and stress, task performance, citizenship behavior, and withdrawal. At the group level, cohesion and functioning are the dependent variables. Finally, at the organizational level, we look at overall productivity and survival. Because these outcomes are covered in all the chapters, we briefly discuss each so you can understand the goal of OB. attitudes Evaluative statements or judgments concerning objects, people, or events. stress An unpleasant psychological process that occurs in response to environmental pressures. Attitudes and Stress task performance The combination of effectiveness and efficiency at doing core job tasks. As we discuss in depth in Chapter 3, employee attitudes are the evaluations employees make, ranging from positive to negative, about objects, people, or events. For example, the statement “I really think my job is great” is a positive job attitude, while “My job is boring and tedious” is a negative job attitude. Stress is an unpleasant psychological condition that occurs in response to environmental pressures. Some people might think influencing employee attitudes and stress is purely soft stuff and not the business of serious managers, but as you will learn, attitudes often have behavioral consequences that directly relate to organizational effectiveness. Ample evidence shows that employees who are more satisfied and treated fairly are more willing to engage in the above-and-beyond citizenship behavior that is so vital in the contemporary business environment. Task Performance The combination of effectiveness and efficiency at doing your core job tasks is a reflection of your level of task performance. If we think about the job of a factory worker, task performance could be measured by the number and quality of products produced in an hour. The task performance measurement of a teacher would be the level of education that students obtain. The task performance measurement of consultants might be the timeliness and quality of the presentations they offer to the client. All these types of performance relate to the core duties and responsibilities of a job and are often directly related to the functions listed on a formal job description. organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) Discretionary behavior that contributes to the psychological and social environment of the workplace. The discretionary behavior that is not part of an employee’s formal job requirements, and that contributes to the psychological
and social environment of the workplace, is called organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), or simply citizenship behavior. Successful organizations have employees who do more than their usual job duties—who provide performance beyond expectations. Organizations want and need employees who make positive contributions that aren’t in any job description, and evidence indicates organizations that have such employees outperform those that don’t. As a result, OB is concerned with citizenship behavior as an outcome variable. withdrawal behavior The set of actions employees take to separate themselves from the organization. Withdrawal Behavior We’ve already mentioned behavior that goes above and beyond task requirements, but what about behavior that in some way is below task requirements? Withdrawal behavior is the set of actions that employees take to separate themselves from the organization. There are many forms of withdrawal, ranging from showing up late or failing to attend meetings to absenteeism and turnover. Employee withdrawal can have a very negative effect on an organization. Although many outcomes in our model can be conceptualized as individual-level phenomena, some relate to the way groups operate. Group cohesion is the extent to which members of a group support and validate one another at work. In other words, a cohesive group is one that sticks together. When employees trust one another, seek common goals, and work together to achieve these common ends, the group is cohesive; when employees are divided among themselves in terms of what they want to achieve and have little loyalty to one another, the group is not cohesive. We can apply OB concepts toward group cohesion. 15 Group Cohesion Group Functioning In the same way that positive job attitudes can be associated with higher levels of task performance, group cohesion should lead to positive group functioning. Group functioning refers to the quantity and quality of a group’s work output. In the same way that the performance of a sports team is more than the sum of each individual player’s performance, group functioning in work organizations is more than the sum of individual task performances. Productivity The highest level of analysis in OB is the organization as a whole. An organization is productive if it achieves its goals by transforming inputs into outputs at the lowest cost. Thus productivity requires both effectiveness and efficiency. A business firm is effective when it attains its sales or market share goals, but its productivity also depends on achieving those goals efficiently. Popular measures of organizational efficiency include return on investment, profit per dollar of sales, and output per hour of labor. Service organizations must include customer needs and requirements in assessing their effectiveness. Why? Because a clear chain of cause and effect runs from employee attitudes and behavior to customer attitudes and profitability. For example, a recent study of six hotels in China indicated that negative employee attitudes decreased customer satisfaction and ultimately harmed the organization’s profitability.43 Survival The final outcome we consider is organizational survival, which is simply evidence that the organization is able to exist and grow over the long term. The survival of an organization depends not just on how productive the organization is, but also on how well it fits with its environment. A company that is very productively making goods and services of little value to the market is unlikely to survive for long, so survival also relies on perceiving the market successfully, making good decisions about how and when to pursue opportunities, and successfully managing change to adapt to new business conditions. group cohesion The extent to which members of a group support and validate one another while at work.
group functioning The quantity and quality of a group’s work output. productivity The combination of the effectiveness and efficiency of an organization. effectiveness The degree to which an organization meets the needs of its clientele or customers. efficiency The degree to which an organization can achieve its ends at a low cost. organizational survival The degree to which an organization is able to exist and grow over the long term. Summary Managers need to develop their interpersonal, or people, skills to be effective in their jobs. OB investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior within an organization, and then applies that knowledge to make organizations work more effectively. Implications for Managers • Resist the inclination to rely on generalizations; some provide valid insights into human behavior, but many are erroneous. Get to know the person, and understand the context.
