McDermott Via Flickr: As well as operating on the North Kent main line services to Margate and Ramsgate the Southeastern Highspeed class 395 Javelin EMU fleet also operate on the High Speed 1 'main line' between Ebbsfleet International and Ashford International where from Ashford these train services operate to Folkestone and Dover. Some Southeastern Highspeed services also run to Maidstone West as well as via Canterbury, thus allowing for these EMUs to have free reign of most of the main lines in and around the county of Kent, which were originally electrified as part of the BR Southern Region's Kent Coast Electrification programme between 1959 and 1961. By the summer of 1961 the Kent Coast Electrification programme was completed, thus bringing an end to steam trains in the county with the former Schools and Battle of Britain classes of steam locomotives along with their crimson & cream Mark 1 and green Maunsell/Bulleid-designed carriages replaced by clean and shiny 4 CEP (later to become class 411) slam-door EMUs painted in the smart BR Southern Region all-over green livery.
