ONLY YOU
Chapter 26: Amethysts Worries and Pearls Decision
Steven and Sodalite watched in horror as Connie plunged the sword into her chest. As she staggered back, Steven dropped the bubble and rushed towards her, catching the injured girl before she fell to the ground. Connie coughed up some blood and her body convulsed in Steven’s arms. At first, Steven was in shock, mostly moving on instinct when he ran to catch Connie, but when she began to writhe in pain, reality set back in.
“H-HOLD ON,” Steven cried out in a panic, hurrying to lick his hand and heal his friend.
However, before he could touch her, Connie shook her head violently, doing her best to keep eye contact as she did so. Steven was frantic, unsure why Connie was refusing, but he couldn’t just watch her suffer like this. He didn’t care why Connie was trying to stop him, there was no way he’d just sit and watch her bleed. Ignoring her weak protest, Steven attempted to touch her once again, but this time, two blue hands gripped at his wrist to stop him.
“Wha-?! Sodalite! What are you doing?!“ Steven demanded as he struggled with the Gem.
“L-look at-at her!!” Shouted Sodalite, doing her best to keep Steven’s hand from touching Connie with what little strength she had left.
Steven glanced down at Connie’s face and his eyes widened in shock. Though she was coughing up blood and her body convulsed in pain, the darkness in her eyes was being forced out. The black tar was floating up into the air, as if reaching for the sky in an attempt to leave Connie’s body. Is this what she wanted? Even as she was bleeding onto his lap, gasping for air and choking on her own blood, he was supposed to simply watch it happen so Connie could be free of this monster? He looked back at Sodalite and nodded his head begrudgingly. If this was Connie’s plan, he’d honor that, but he wasn’t about to let her die right in front of him. He could only allow this to go on for so long before he’d have to intervene.
With his small assurance, Sodalite released his arm and fell to her knees beside him. She was terrified he would be furious at her for stopping him, but this human girl was suffering for this. She didn’t want her to suffer for nothing.
Gritting his teeth, Steven steeled himself for as long as he could and waited what seemed like an eternity for that black sludge to make its way out from Connie’s eyes. He could hardly stand it. Connie was in agony, but held tight to the sword, fighting the creature even now. What little breath she could gather was only possible when choking out the blood that blocked her air way.
Though he couldn’t be sure that the monster had left Connie completely, the moment he saw what appeared to be the last of it leave her eyes, he acted as fast as he could. “Sodalite, bubble it!” He called out with tears in his eyes before quickly placing Connie down onto the sand. In order to heal her properly, he’d have to take the sword from her chest. Which means he would have to cause her more pain.
He didn’t stop to wait for Sodalite, but he could see her from the corner of his eye as she scrambled over to bubble the black goo. His vision was blurred with tears as he gripped the handle of the sword that was stuck inside his friend. He licked his free hand and prepared himself for what was about to happen. He’d have to be quick. With a deep breath, Steven lifted the sword and once the blood soaked blade was out, he swiftly placed his hand over her wound.
Connie made a painful gasp when the sword was removed, but her body became still when Steven pressed his hand to her wound. Holding his breath, he looked at his friend anxiously, barely able to make out her face through his tears. He wiped his eyes and waited for a sign. Then he felt it. Thump. Connie’s heartbeat pulsed against his palm and Steven’s breath returned in a haggard gasp, tears bursting from his eyes once again. She was alive.
“Th-thank goodness….thank goodness….!” Steven sobbed over and over, hugging Connie’s tired body to his chest. His whole body trembled as he held on tight, too scared to let her go.
Sodalite watched silently as Steven held his friend. Everything happened so quickly, she hardly knew what to do afterward. This was the first time she’d seen a human so badly hurt. Were they all this fragile? That creature said that Lars had been hurt, what if he was suffering like this girl? The panicked Gem tried to move, but her body wouldn’t listen. In fact, trying to get up had only made her dizzy as she was forced back to her knees. Forming that bubble truly must have been the last of what little strength she had left. Perhaps it would have been a good idea to retreat into her Gem and recharge, but she didn’t know how long it would take and with Lars hurt somewhere, she couldn’t just hide away.
“M-my Steven…” Sodalite began, trying once again to get to her feet and falling back to her knees at once, “…y-your friend…d-does she kn-know…”
“-Not yet,” Steven interrupted quickly.
Connie may have been alive, but she was weak and Steven didn’t want to disturb her. Not right away. It was bad enough that he felt guilty for her condition, but he was also feeling guilty for not shaking her awake and asking Spinel and Lars’ whereabouts. He just couldn’t rush this at Connie’s expense.
For all the time that Sodalite was away from Lars, she had done her best to help Steven. She had not blamed him for his outbursts or for keeping her by his side. She didn’t even mind that she was being used to the point of exhaustion, but when Steven refused to press on about Lars, for the first time, Sodalite felt a bitter sting at her chest. Even so, there wasn’t anything she could do if Steven wasn’t willing to wake up the girl. Sodalite swallowed her anger and gripped her trembling hands tight to her chest.
“My Diamond,” called out a few of Yellows Amethyst guards that had been stationed outside the Beach house. Though they had been reluctant to follow after Steven when he seemed angry, they couldn’t ignore the screams that reached them earlier. When they came to investigate and saw the bloody scene, the gems took action and rushed to help in a panic.
Steven said nothing as the guards surrounded them. He could only vaguely hear their anxious concerns and offers to help. His tear filled gaze was set on the blood soaked sand beneath them. Though Connie was alive, he was still in shock over what he had to witness and now that everything was quiet, he felt a little numb. With all this power, he was forced to watch her suffer for so long before he could do anything at all. It was the same with Spinel. Why couldn’t he help the people he loved the most?
“…take Connie back to the house,” began Steven with an empty voice, “…put her in bed and contact the Crystal Gems to return.”
“Yes, My Diamond,” answered an Amethyst right away, reaching down to take Connie from Steven’s arms and carrying her off towards the house.
A couple of Amethysts stayed behind, unsure what to do. Steven looked unwell as he stared at the sand and Sodalite seemed to be struggling to stay awake. One of them stepped forward in concern, “My Diamond, allow us to escort you and your Sodalite back as well,” she suggested with a salute.
Even in his brief state of shock, Steven was still a bit paranoid about having Sodalite too far from him. Every time she got more than an arms length away, that awful pain would rise up again. At the guards suggestion, Steven shook his head, “she stays with me, but take her bubble back to the house,” he insisted while getting to his feet. He offered a hand to Sodalite, but the freckled Gem seemed reluctant to take his help, or rather, she didn’t seem to want it at all. It was the first time he’d seen Sodalite acting this way. Not that he couldn’t figure out the reason why. “I’m worried about them too. …but Connie just risked her life in order to remove that…thing from her body. Hasn’t she earned a little rest? …I don’t think Lars or Spinel would want either of us to push Connie to the brink for information.”
Honestly, Steven’s words didn’t help much, but if Sodalite wanted to avoid retreating into her Gem to recover, she would need a little help not to over exert herself. She said nothing in reply as she took Steven’s hand. Once he pulled her up to her feet, Steven draped her arm around his shoulders to support her while they walked back to the house in silence.
Though it didn’t take long to reach the house, Steven could tell that Sodalite was at her limit. Once inside, saw Connie resting on the couch and he led Sodalite there as well. He took a seat next to his sleeping friend with Sodalite on his other side. “…get some rest…” he said quietly, glancing down at Connie’s sleeping face. Steven was sure Sodalite needed rest, but what he didn’t expect was the sudden weight on his shoulder. Glancing over, he was surprised to see that Sodalite had fallen asleep rather quickly, resting her head against him. With a small sigh, Steven adjusted himself to make the Gem more comfortable. Sitting between the two sleeping girls, he found himself feeling a bit drowsy as well. After all, it had been a rather eventful day and he was already pushing himself pretty hard. At least with Sodalite so close he wouldn’t have to worry about feeling the worst. His eyelids became heavy and without much struggle, Steven fell asleep.
While Steven and the others took a much needed rest, the Crystal Gems had received his message to come home. Pearl was especially speedy about her return since she hadn’t been too far away. She was the first to arrive at the house and because the message didn’t specify anything, she had been bit panicked over what she might find when she got there. However, to her surprise, Pearl was greeted with a rather serene moment when she entered their home. It was great relief to see that Connie had returned, though she couldn’t disregard her blood stained clothes, Pearl didn’t want to cause a fuss and wake them just yet. Instead, the slender Gem made her way to the couch and began pulling some items from the Gem on her forehead. She gently placed a blanket over Connie and set out an extra pair of clothes for when she woke up. It was the best she could do to help at the moment.
“Pearl!” Cried out Amethyst as she warped into the house.
Pearl hurriedly stood up and shushed her friend with a finger to her lips, “you’ll wake them,” she whispered urgently.
Amethyst went silent at once and examined the scene in front of her as she made her way to Pearl. “No one’s hurt?” She whispered back.
Pearl shook her head, “Connie seems to have been hurt…but I’m sure Steven healed her, or she would be bandaged up. …Steven and Sodalite just needed rest. …they were asleep when I got here, so I haven’t been able to ask what happened exactly.”
Amethyst took a deep breath and ran her hand through her hair, “I was worried. I don’t think I can take much more bad stuff. …when this all started, all we had to worry about was Spinel getting Steven into trouble when they left town…”
Pearl laughed bitterly as her eyes burned with tears. It’s true. She’d been so worried about Spinel and Steven drifting away before that it seemed so trivial in comparison to what was happening now. “Yes…I have a lot to apologize for when Spinel returns…”
Amethyst was still on the fence whether or not to believe Spinel was alive. She wanted to be positive, but she also didn’t want to get her hopes up only to feel like she’d lost her friend again. Still, that didn’t mean she was giving up. “About that…” she began with a glance towards Steven, “…when this is all over, what are we gonna do about Sodalite?”
“What do you mean? She’ll go home,” answered Pearl, a little puzzled that Amethyst would ask such a thing.
“Yeah but…” Amethyst grabbed Pearls arm and pulled her down gently to whisper, “…haven’t you noticed Steven has been really weird since she’s been around? I didn’t say anything at first ‘cause Garnet told me everything was fine, but he’s been looking real pale and he flies off the handle at every little thing.”
Taken aback by Amethysts observations, Pearl wasn’t sure how to respond. Of course she noticed the change in Steven, but he had been grieving at first. Wasn’t it normal to not exactly be yourself when losing someone you loved? Pearl certainly understood how that could make someone lose their head. Still, she did share Amethysts concerns. “…We need Sodalite in order to catch this thing…but you’re not wrong. …Steven has been rather…possessive of her…which isn’t like him.”
Amethyst nodded quickly, “exactly. I even heard him shout at Sodalite the other day. He was angry with her. That’s definitely not normal for Steven. I mean, she can be pretty frustrating with all the crying and when she freaked out over that squirrel, but it’s not like she’s a bad Gem. Steven wouldn’t get angry over little things and upset someone like that.”
Pearl stood up straight and glanced back at Steven. “…perhaps…we should separate them. Just for a little while to see if Steven’s mood improves. It couldn’t hurt to just…see what happens.”
Amethyst was about to respond when Sodalite began to stir. The Gems went quiet as she opened her eyes, still seemingly half asleep. They would have rushed over to ask questions, but they knew it would only startle her.
“Did you rest well?” Pearl asked instead, trying to remain calm so Sodalite didn’t panic.
The blue Gem flinched when she suddenly realized where she was. How long had she been out? “Y-yes,” she replied quickly, shifting away from Steven just a bit, embarrassed that she was leaning against him.
“If you don’t mind, could you tell us what happened?” Pearl continued, doing her best not to sound too impatient. Dealing with Sodalite felt similar to dealing with a scared, wild rabbit. It was hard to tell what would set her off. “We’ll step outside and talk so we don’t wake Connie or Steven.”
Although Sodalite didn’t like being around other Gems alone, she wanted to push through and bring the others up to speed so that they could come up with a way to help Lars. She nodded her head and stood from the couch to follow Pearl and Amethyst out onto the deck.
“Sh-shouldn’t we wait f-for Garnet…?” Sodalite asked once they were out of the house.
“Yeah…where is Garnet,” wondered Amethyst aloud. “You’d think she would have been the first one here.”
“We’ll catch her up once she gets here,” Pearl insisted before turning to Sodalite. “Now, tell us what happened here. Why is Connie here? I thought she was being controlled. Did she hurt anyone? Is that thing still—“
“—whoa, Pearl, chill out. You gotta give her chance to talk.”
Pearl nodded her head and bit her lip in order to keep her mouth shut. She’d been so concerned she nearly forgot to be patient.
Sodalite wasn’t sure she would be able to explain properly, but she did her best. She told the two what Connie had said when she arrived and how she and Steven were too weak to really do anything about the creature. When she explained Connie’s methods of removing the creature, both Gems looked horrified.
“So…that thing was bubbled? Where is it now?” Pearl asked after letting it all sink in for a moment.
“I-I don’t know. My-my Steven ga-gave it t-to the guard a-and I-I was resting until now…”
Amethyst crossed her arms over her chest, trying to put everything together in a way that she could understand. It didn’t make sense. “…Connie must have been fighting that thing for a while…so why show up now? How did she know that you and Steven would be alone…or that you two would be so weak? We’ve had guards around the house since the Quartz incidents. They would have noticed something if she was watching the house.”
“We’ve already confirmed that she can control multiple people…even Gems. Perhaps…she has someone watching us…” suggested Pearl.
“Sodalite should be able to tell if someone is being controlled and no one has been allowed anywhere near the house except for you, me, Garnet, and Lars. …and since Lars was taken…it couldn’t have been him.” Amethyst answered.
“But Sodalite has been weak while caring for Steven day and night. Maybe she couldn’t sense anything while her power was focused elsewhere.”
Sodalite listened to the two Gems go back and forth. Their words were concerning of course. It’s true that she’d been drained since being around Steven. What if she had missed something and that was the reason that creature was able to slip by them and take Lars? So his kidnapping was her fault after all? Did she miss something important? “…I…I was j-just…”
“Don’t worry,” interrupted Pearl with a forced smile, trying not to let Sodalite spiral. “We’ll figure this out. Once Connie wakes up, we’ll see what she knows and hopefully, we can find Spinel and Lars to bring them home.”
Though she didn’t trust Pearl, Sodalite nodded her head. What else could she do? Amethyst and Pearl glanced at one another in concern while Sodalite sulked. They weren’t sure what to say that might cheer up the Gem.
“Why don’t you go and get a little more rest? After what happened…it’s best if you preserve your energy for the next time,” offered Pearl finally. “Go to the observatory and rest there. The quiet and solitude will probably do you some good.”
Sodalite opened her mouth to reply, but nothing came out and the freckled Gem gave up. As much as she wanted to go save Lars, there was little she could do without knowing where to start. With another nod, she rushed off, leaving Amethyst and Pearl alone.
Amethyst sighed miserably, running her fingers through her hair, “oh man,” she groaned, “this is just getting way more complicated.”
“Connie is back at least,” replied Pearl, staring out at the beach as she worked on putting everything together. “…I’m just surprised that Garnet didn’t see any of this coming. …she told us that it was difficult to see, but to miss all of this, it’s not like her.”
“That weird thing inside of Spinel has turned everything upside down,” shrugged Amethyst. “Can’t blame Garnet for not predicting its every move.”
“I’m not blaming her. It just puts us at a terrible disadvantage. Still…it’s best to focus on what we can do for now. Until Garnet returns, we’ll watch over Steven and Connie. Hopefully when they wake up…we can finally get a few answers. I’ll stay with them, so why don’t you go and watch over Sodalite? Lars said she doesn’t like being alone.”
“Yeah, but she doesn’t like me,” Amethyst replied, “she’s pretty calm around Garnet.”
Pearl groaned and shook her head, “forget it. I’m sure she’ll be fine for a little while. She needs to rest anyway.” Though the slender Gem would have offered to keep Sodalite company, she knew that she would not be a welcome presence either. Sodalite didn’t like her, especially after she had to hurt Lars before.
As the two Gems resigned themselves to wait, Steven was slowly stirring in his sleep. His chest felt tight and it was becoming harder and harder to take a proper breath. Even with his eyes closed, tears were slipping down his cheeks, coupled by a terrible mix of regret, resentment, guilt, and anger. With a sudden gasp for air, Steven woke up in a panic and frantically scanned the room. Connie was still resting beside him, but Sodalite was no where to be found. In an instant, his anxiety grew. Sodalite was here when he fell asleep, where had she gone? He could feel the pain starting to grow rapidly and his breathing became more haggard, as if he’d been deprived of oxygen somehow. Steven clutched at his chest and awkwardly got to his feet.
“SODALITE!!” He called out, angry and upset that she had left his side. Didn’t he tell her that she had to stay close?
To Steven’s surprise, it was not Sodalite that came running, but Amethyst and Pearl. This did nothing to help his current state.
“Where’s Sodalite,” asked Steven impatiently.
Pearl ignored the question and quickly rushed to Steven in order to help him stand. He looked much worse than before. “Steven, you look awful! You should sit back down and rest,” she insisted in concern. “You must have—“
“—where’s Sodalite?!” He demanded once again, startling Pearl when he raised his voice in anger.
Amethyst seemed uncomfortable, but she took a breath and spoke up despite Steven’s behavior. “…she’s resting. You should be too…” she answered calmly.
“Why aren’t you guys answering me?!” Steven continued in a weak, angry huff. It was a simple question, wasn’t it?
Pearl glanced at Amethyst, realizing now that this is what she was talking about. Steven didn’t seem to care about anything else except for finding Sodalite at the moment. She must not have noticed how bad it had gotten because she was so focused on losing Spinel and Sodalite wasn’t ever too far from Steven. Still, Pearl wanted to be sure.
“…Connie is still sleeping. You might wake her,” added Pearl, hoping to calm Steven down a bit.
The Gems were only adding frustration to his ever growing list of unchecked emotions. Every second without Sodalite near was like another breath he couldn’t take and he wasn’t sure his body could handle the pain that followed. “Just take me to Sodalite,” he demanded, not wanting to waste what little breath he had in arguing. “NOW!”
Pearl bit her lip and repressed the urge to do as he asked. She didn’t like seeing him this way. He was pale and clearly in pain, but Amethyst was right. This wasn’t like him. Sodalites power was keeping him calm, but it was as if he couldn’t handle being without it. Was it best to keep them apart?
“…okay Steven,” answered Pearl finally. “Just sit down and rest. I’ll bring Sodalite here for you…”
With that small assurance, Steven relaxed a little and nodded his head. Once Pearl walked away, he slumped back onto the couch and tried to take deep breath. Everything would be fine once Sodalite was back.
Amethyst didn’t say anything at first, but as Pearl began to head up the stairs, the purple Gem followed after her.
“Didn’t you see how he reacted?!” Asked Amethyst in an urgent whisper. “This isn’t good!”
“…I know,” replied Pearl without looking at her friend. Honestly, seeing Steven like this was enough to make her burst into tears, but Pearl didn’t have that luxury right now. She held back the burning in her eyes and wiped away any tears that tried to escape as she climbed the stairs to the observatory where Sodalite was pacing the floor anxiously.
“A-are they a-awake?” Sodalite asked as soon as the other Gems entered the room.
Amethyst wasn’t sure what Pearl was planning to do, but she could see her friends shoulders begin to tremble. She reached over and placed her hand against Pearls arm to show her support as best she could.
Pearl was honestly losing her resolve bit by bit, but when Amethyst reached out to her, she felt that her decision would be trusted and her courage returned. This may not have been the right choice, but it was all she could think of to do right now. “Amethyst, please take Sodalite to the Zoo.”
“Wh-why?! W-what d-did I do wrong?” Sodalite asked in a panic.
“Nothing. Steven just wants you to stay at the Zoo to get some rest. There may be Quartz’ there, but there are also plenty of humans. You prefer being around humans, right?” Pearl answered quickly. “It’s nice and relaxing there. You can stay in the human sanctuary until you feel well enough to go after Lars and Spinel.”
Sodalite was worried at first that she was being punished. Though meeting new humans didn’t sound like fun, she was grateful that Steven was worried about her well being and she could get enough rest to be useful when they had to actually fight. For Lars and Steven, she needed to be at her best. “O-okay!” Replied Sodalite with a nervous smile. “I-I’ll be r-ready. Pl-please come and get me th-the moment w-we know where th-they are.”
Amethyst and Pearl were glad to see that Sodalite wasn’t questioning this. Even happier that she wasn’t panicking over having to go. Pearl didn’t like lying to her, but if she didn’t take this chance to separate Steven from her now, it would be too difficult later on. Without a fuss, Sodalite followed Amethyst to the warp pad and vanished in a flash of light, leaving Pearl alone in the observatory to worry about what she was going to say when Steven eventually realized that Sodalite was gone from the house. Perhaps she was making a rash decision, but the fact remained that they needed Sodalite well rested if they wanted to get Spinel and Lars back safely.

So I came up with a couple of Stevinel headcanons the other day
HC#1: Spinel likes to listen to Steven’s heartbeat when they’re about to sleep together. It reassured her that Steven is safe and thus relaxes her and helps her fall asleep (I got this one from a fanfic, don’t remember which one tho)
HC#2: Spinel likes to cook meals for Steven. Tho she sometimes overdoes it and cooks more food than Steven could finish KEK
That first one does seem familiar. Huh... You know, I might implement that one into my fic.
That second one has me laughing imagining her nearly burning down the house with her first attempts in trying to cook. 🤣

One sketch led to other and I ended up drawing some SuccubusSpinel! From @ashydoki fan fiction. For some reason Spinel being insecure about her body stuck in my mind. It ended up cuter than intended XD I hope she likes it anyways!

Nightmares (Stevinel Story) Steven Universe
For Stevineltober, (I know, it was last month - I’m slow) I decided to merge the two prompts ‘nightmare’ and ‘insecurity’ and I came up with a short story. It will be below the line. A comic will be posted soon after that goes with it.
WARNING: Steven x Spinel themed, angst, slight gore, death, suicide, yelling.
NIGHTMARES
He took a step backwards. The black grass crumbled into ash. Smoke was rising from every crack in the hard ground. Pink acid flowed in streams between the chasms. Unbearable heat rose from the soil. His dry skin was sweating over his bruises and cuts. His jacket was torn and his hands were burnt and bleeding. He had bruises on his face. Tears streamed over his skin. His mouth was bleeding. He couldn’t heal himself.
He had lost.
Gem shards lay under his feet. The shards of his friends and family. They had shattered only minutes earlier. The boy stumbled backwards, his lip trembling, his whole body shaking. He had lost, and he had accepted it.
He stared in sadness up at the top of the Injector. The hour-glass shaped machine was empty. The bio-poison had infected the whole planet. Without his powers, without his friends, he was nothing. He had lost. The planet was dead.
There was only two people left here.
The gem stood on the edge of the Injector, staring back down at the tiny figure. She trembled. Shaky tears rolled down her scarred cheeks. What had she done? Was this really what she wanted? Was all this worth it?
There was no reversing this. The planet that had been protected from danger for thousands of years, was now completely and utterly destroyed in a day. And it was her fault.
Even though they were so far from each other, they knew exactly what each other was thinking. He was devastated beyond repair, but he had accepted his horrific end. She was regretting every action, wishing she had stayed in the Garden, hoping with all her gem that maybe Steven Universe could fix all this. But deep down she knew he wouldn’t survive much longer. She knew she had killed him. She had killed his planet.
He was dying painfully. Spinel couldn’t bear to watch any longer. Why did she do this to him? He didn’t deserve this, did he? He didn’t abandon her. Pink did.
Spinel shook her head. She put her hands together, swelling them up to enormous fists, clenching them tight above her head. Tears dripped down her gritted teeth.
She threw her fists down on the top of the Injector. The impact sent shockwaves through the enormous crystal spaceship, shattering the head and breaking it beyond repair. Steven gasped, stepping backwards when he saw the Injector break.
“No,” He whispered hoarsely, his lip trembling. “Please, no…”
Spinel wept bitterly, wailing in sadness. She lifted her hands again, bringing them down forcefully for a second time. The Injector head shattered more.
“Spinel…” Steven whispered, his voice tight and pained. “Stop… please…”
Peridot had told him earlier that the Injector could explode under pressure. Steven was beginning to believe that Spinel knew that. This was her escape. Where else could she go? Back to the Garden? Homeworld? She didn’t belong anywhere. Steven had only a few seconds to rescue her. He had only a few seconds before he became the only living soul on the planet. And he had only a few minutes of being the only living soul on the planet after that.
“Spinel!” He yelled. But she would never have heard him. She continued to beat her hands on the Injector head, wailing loudly. She felt cold and hollow, despite the sweltering heat rising from the corrupted planet below her. Her pigtails hung low and she shrieked loudly in anger and despair.
The final blow came. The Injector glowed bright white, blinding lights beaming from the cracks in the shattered head. Suddenly, there was an eye-scorching flash, and a deafening explosion.
Spinel’s tear-stained face disappeared in the pink light. The explosion was so forceful, she was in shards before her form had disappeared. The pink mushroom cloud formed suddenly and violently, sending tsunamis of pink acid out into the poisoned oceans. Steven was knocked backwards in the impact, the shockwaves of the explosion shattering glass and felling dead trees.
There was a few minutes of dread-filled silence. Slowly, the pink smoke turned to black ash, and the last of the shockwaves faded out. Steven lay on his back, bleeding and whimpering, the burning ground scorching his skin and his clothes. He slowly sat up, weak and trembling. In his last moments of life, the scarred and insensate boy sat on the planet he had been raised on, surrounded by the dead bodies and souls of his friends and family. His home was gone. His planet was destroyed. After thousands of years of protecting it, it was all gone.
He glanced down. Amongst the ash and burnt soil, he spotted a few pink shards. They had landed after the explosion. The boy crawled forwards on his side, reaching over to pick them up. He held them between his fingers, tears streaming down his face unbearably.
“I guess I can’t save everyone.”
He pulled the shards close to him as he lay backwards on the ash and dust. Pink acid ate away at the soil, burning closer and closer to him.
“Spinel, I’m so sorry. I wish I could have protected you. I wish I could have protected everyone.”
He breathed in hoarsely, only inhaling black dust that clogged his throat. He whimpered, blood trickling down his lips, sweltering pink acid licking at his fingers. He choked, his breathing raspy and uneven. He held Spinel’s shards close to him, coughing and spluttering, blood and tears cooling his scorched skin. He opened his eyes one last time, seeing the ground crack, a wave of pink acid curling above him, ready to swallow his body into its ocean of destruction, melting away his flesh into a pile of burnt bones and a forgotten diamond.
*****
His eyes were wet when he opened them. His pillow was soaked beneath his head. He bit his lip, looking up and glancing out the window. The sky was blue, painted with white clouds, and hanging delicately above a row of green tree-covered hills and a beautiful blue ocean. There was no bio-poison. There was no Injector. No death, no destruction. Only thriving life. Relief flooded into his mind like a waterfall.
Suddenly, he heard static at the end of his bed. He looked over at the maroon TV propped up at the back of his room, and saw a screen of black and white static. ‘No, no no no,’ He thought. ‘I broadcasted that one, didn’t I?’
He looked to his side and his heart missed a beat. There were crinkled sheets where she had been sleeping beside him. Steven gagged, looking around frantically, immediately wondering where she could be. He was usually the one to wake up first.
“Spin– Spinel! Sp–”
The moment he saw her, he was almost paralysed with terror. She was sitting at the end of his bed, her pigtails right down, her body trembling. She was curled tight, whimpering and sobbing to herself. Her eyes were on the TV screen.
“Spinel…” Steven whispered. “Are you…”
“I’m terrible,” Her voice replied, hoarse and nearly incomprehensible. “I’m terrible and you know it.”
“No, no no no no no that wasn’t you,” The boy wept, scrambling out of bed and walking towards her. “That wasn’t you. You would never.”
He reached his arms out to her. Instead of running to him and hugging him tight like she would normally, she rose to her feet and stepped away from him, her eyes wide and filled with sadness.
“But that’s what I was going to do!” Spinel exclaimed. “When I took the rejuvenator and the Injector to Earth – that is EXACTLY what I was going to do! I wanted you to die alone on that barren world! I wanted to kill you so bad but – but I had no right to do it!”
“Spinel please listen,” Steven wailed. “I didn’t mean – I didn’t want to ever think of you that way! I know you’re not a bad person! I know you’d never do that to me, or to anyone or planet! You’ve changed now!”
“But you know I wasn’t before,” The gem spluttered. “That’s why you dreamt about it! That’s why you’re still thinking about it! I could have killed you! I could have killed your planet, and your friends!”
“But you didn’t!” Steven cried, tears streaming down his face. “I never EVER think of you that way! I can’t control my dreams! I – I – I trust you! I care about you! I – I – I love you!”
“I don’t believe you anymore!” Spinel shrieked, her voice uneven and pained. “If you still see me that way when you’re unconscious – you must still think I could hurt you! You know I could!”
Spinel clenched herself tight, shying away from the weeping boy.
“I CAN’T TAKE IT!” She screamed. “I’M EVIL! I CAN NEVER CHANGE! I’VE SCARRED YOU AND I WILL NEVER BE FORGIVEN FOR WHAT I’VE DONE!”
“I DON’T SEE YOU THAT WAY!” Steven howled. “SPINEL, PLEASE! I’M SO SORRY! I LOVE YOU! PLEASE!”
She raced past him, crying openly and bitterly. He ran after her, following her out of the sliding door and up the ramp to the dome. He begged her to stay, repeating bitterly how much he loved her, his head filled with the terror his nightmare had caused both of them. They would never move on from this.

I'm sorry to bother you with a random question on tumblr of all places but I'm actually trying to write my own spineven? Steinel? Story, with a friend of mine but lately I've been having trouble pushing my self to actually work on it, so my question is "How did you manage to push yourself to write as many chapters as you did for your stories?"
Oh that’s okay, I don’t mind random questions at all. :)
Honestly, I have a lot of stories in my head and I like to share them. Even if some of my stories are not very popular, when I write them down, it’s like seeing the story in my head come to life and I enjoy it.
Not to say that writing isn’t hard. I have taken sooo many little hiatuses for my Stevinel stories because I get stuck, but what pushes me to keep going on them is mostly the people that read it. Even if it’s just one person who’s excitedly waiting for a new chapter and sends me a message asking when it’ll come out. It makes me really happy to know that people enjoy reading what I’m writing down, even if i sometimes think it’s not as good as it should be. One fan of the story really makes all the difference.
I’d very much like to read your Stevinel story once it’s out. I’m always looking for more fanfics to read and inspire me too. Please let me know when the first chapter is out. :)
I hope this helped a little. I’m not the greatest at giving advice, but I’m trying my best. ^^;

Chapter 1
In a garden, located somewhere in space, there was a figure observing something in the distance. With one hand on their chest, the figure began to move and run with difficulty toward the source of light.
(changing the scene; on Earth)
After giving his message to the entire universe, Steven Universe said goodbye with great difficulty to the Diamonds and headed home. To his home.
Steven arrived back on Earth, warping into a glass dome at the back of the beach house. Connie, his best friend, was seen sitting on the floor reading a magazine, as Steven arrives on the warp pad inside.
"Steven! What took you so long?"
Steven leaped over to Connie and the two embraced, before starting to explain with a sigh.
"The Diamonds. They really want me to move in"
"Why?"
"Because they want to smother me with attention 24/7" he complained.
Connie could only giggle at the sight of her best friend's grimace.
"Sounds fun~"
"No, it doesn't" he complained even more. He found it hard to believe how anyone could think that spending all their time with the Diamonds could be fun.
"Well, I'm glad I got to see you before heading out" said the brunette, relieved. If she was honest, their relationship was something that worried her greatly. But even more so the health of her best friend.
"You're really going through with it?" Steven tried his best not to sound sad. Too sad.
They both left the conservatory, and begin descending the stairs to the balcony outside Steven's Room
"Of course" she replied with resolution "I've always wanted to go to space camp"
"But you've literally been to space multiple times" he pointed out, confused "And you've done way cooler stuff than just camp there"
Connie understood Steven's doubts, but she was ready. And her parents supported her, something she would never forget. And that's exactly what she said to the boy.
"My parents are doing what they can to support my interests. It's sweet" she enters the room and picks up her duffel bag" Plus, I get all the freeze-dried ice cream I can eat"
Steven soon found another reason for her to stay, apparently.
"But Sadie Killer and the Suspects are playing tonight. Isn't a rock show a little better than space camp?" he almost begged.
Connie looked at him, with a small smile.
"It's maybe equal to space camp"
Steven couldn't help but chuckle as Connie pulled out her vibrating phone from her pocket.
"That's my mom. I should get going"
Connie and Steven embraced each other again. Connie briefly turned away, blushing with her arms crossed, and seeing her opportunity, she gave Steven a quick peck on the cheek, causing him to blush as well.
"Okay! Bye!" Connie proceeded to run down the stairs and out of the house.
Steven put his hand to his cheek grinning widely. However, the hybrid felt a strange and alien sensation, which disappeared as suddenly as it appeared. Thinking it was just his imagination, he ignored it, and then ran out onto the balcony to bid Connie farewell.
"Tell everyone at space camp that space used to be super scary and dangerous, but it's great now!" he exclaimed from where he was standing.
"I will!" The girl replied, waving goodbye.
As Connie left, Steven sighed contently and thought about expressing it with a song. But then something stopped him. A feeling foreign to him. Again. If Steven was happy, then why was he suddenly feeling so miserable?
The boy stopped for a few seconds, contemplating what he felt and what it could mean. Something was definitely wrong, if it was the second time he felt it. And the worst part is that now he was sure it was not his imagination. He looked worriedly at the bright sky and ran to his room. He looked at a photo frame of the crystal gems and floated on his bed, lying on it. Then he sat down and thought about telling the gems about this new development. Maybe they would know what to do about it.
The young boy petted CatSteven on the porch, and ran out onto the beach, where Pearl, Greg, and Lion were by Greg's van.
"Hey, Pearl! Hey, Dad!" he greeted them.
"'Ey, schtu-ball"
"Steven! I'm learning to play the "bass""
"I keep tellin' her it's "base""
"Excuse me, b-a-s-s spells "bass""
"You're the boss!" Greg finally gave up.
"Heck yes, I am"
But before Perla could start singing about her story, Steven had an urgent need to stop her. He had questions that needed answers.
"Pearl, wait"
"Steven?" At first, Pearl was confused, as Steven never missed an opportunity to sing or enjoy letting others sing. But seeing his worried face, she gave up and became more serious "Tell me what's wrong.
Noticing the ex-servant difference in tone and demeanor, Greg paid more attention to his son.
"I-I don't know how to explain it. It's... a very unpleasant feeling that appears out of nowhere. It has only happened twice, but it has been during the times that I have been happy. The strangest thing is that it showed... as if it were not part of me?"
Pearl tried to make sense of Steven's words, but without much success.
"So, what you're saying is that you felt something that could belong to someone else?" she asked at the end.
"Something like this? I'm not sure"
Steven was frustrated at not knowing how to explain himself better. Sure, it was not the first time that he had experienced a similar event. However, last time... it was different. Had he discovered a new power, as a manifestation of his subconscious? Whatever it was, it was not the same as what happened to him that last time. After all, he was awake.
"Steven, maybe you should ask Garnet to see what she sees in your future. Maybe you will get an answer" the pale gem tried. Greg could only listen, not knowing how to help.
He hummed before nodding.
"Good idea, Pearl. But if you remember something related to this, do not hesitate to come find me. Any answer is better than nothing"
"Of course. Be careful, Steven" said the tall gem, worried about Steven.
Steven, who did not want to worry his family, smiled at them gratefully, before entering Leon's mane, who approached Steven at some point during the chat.
Once on the other side, Steven emerged from Lars's head, Garnet catching him in time.
"I've saved you a seat" was the first thing she said, seating the teenager next to the Off Colors, while Lars served the sweet known as Ube Roll, his specialty.
"Thanks Garnet" the boy thanked her with a smile, before remembering why he was here. Noticing the change in Steven, Garnet sat next to him, waiting for his explanation. "Something has happened ... I explained it to Pearl, but she seems to have no idea what it is about. That's why I came here" then he looked at Garnet "to see if you saw something bad or strange happening in my future.
The fusion seemed to be thinking for a while, before frowning. Not that it was visible through her visor.
"I'm not... sure" she admitted reluctantly. That worried her. There were many probable futures, and some of them didn't make sense. Maybe she hadn't seen far enough?
Steven dropped his shoulders, disappointed.
"I don't know if it will help you, but I have already twice felt the feeling of being unhappy when I feel the opposite of that. And like it's not part of me"
That left a contemplative expression on her part, but without getting the answers her adoptive son was looking for. Except one, there was a good chance it would happen.
"Someone is going to visit us. What I don't know is if it will be with good or bad intentions" she decided to say for the moment.
"A visit? You mean a gem? A new one?" That worried him even more, recalling his bad experiences with visits from other gems. A hand on his shoulder stopped him in his negative spiral of thoughts.
"Steven, whoever they are, they will need your help. Everyone's help. They are hurting. I still cannot find out who they are, what they look like, and why they feel that way. But I do not doubt that something horrible has happened to them" she paused, her gaze somewhat lost, before returning her attention to the hybrid "Prepare yourself for anything that may happen"
Steven could only nod his head knowing it was the only advice she would give him. Before leaving, however, an idea occurred to him. Which didn't surprise Garnet.
"I'm going to look for Amethyst, so we can get together and make a plan"
The Off Colors and Lars stood aside, noticing the seriousness of the situation. However, if something happens, they were going to be there immediately. And that was exactly what they communicated to their young friend.
"Thank you guys" smiled the young Universe, gratefully.
To be continued...

OK, it's finally here! This is the fanfic i submitted to @ladylore97 for her Steven Universe: The Movie anniversary contest. I made second place for it, and I am very proud to get to share it with all of you.
This story takes place after the injector explodes and Steven saves Spinel from the impact. I have often watched this scene wondering what could have been if Connie had only waited a few more minutes to call out for Steven - how would Steven and Spinel interact? How would Spinel cope with the guilt of nearly killing Steven and then being forgiven for all of it? Well, this is my take on it. I do need to let you know that this story is as canon compliant as possible, so not a lot of shipping material here for Steven/Spinel as a romantic pairing. There is implied one-sided attraction, as I did tag it in the story. But don't worry, there will be another time for all of that shipping goodness. ;)
I hope you like reading just as much as I liked making it. Now, without further ado, I give you Tying Loose Ends!

Bite marks and Roses Ch 10
Spinel whipped the west off her brow and listened as a couple of Peridots outside her room seemed excited about something so the small pink gem listened to their conversation.
“Have you heard?” The first Peridot spoke.
“How can I not, the entirety of Homeworld has been talking about it.” The second chimed.
“Yeah I heard this years ball is allowing lower ranked gems to join the ball.” The first Peridot said.
“I heard if you get an invitation you can enter but only if you have one. There are no affections.” The second Peridot said.
“Looks like the pearls have their work cut out.” The first one chuckled.
The two gems left chucking to each other and Spinel sighed but she began to replay what they had said on loop. One of the diamonds was hosting a ball? Spinel rubbed her arm and shivered. She was happy that the nightmare was over. Spinel couldn’t bare the sheer thought of being in any more pain. About this ball it was said a gem would receive an invitation, how odd normally high ranking gems would attend balls or any other event by the diamonds. However since it was possible that anyone could attend that was just mind blowing to the small pink gem. Spinel slowly got up and stretched her limbs. It was such a pleasant feeling to stretch and move again. She feared that she would never be able to feel such feelings if she stayed in the garden much longer.
It was so strange seeing so many gems engaged and happy about the ball. Maybe it was because they could never go and this time they could so that might have been what all the buss was about. The pink spinel stared as she watched a couple of them pass by. Maybe Spinel should get out and walk around, come back later when the lights go out. Spinel looked out and smiled. They lights were still on, it was a good sign for her considering her unfortunate events with Jasper. Spinel shook, the daunting fear that Jasper would find her again haunted Spinel in the back of her mind.
The sheer thought of encountering that brute again made Spinel shutter and almost reconsider going out. Maybe she was blowing that out of proportion but that Jasper must feel pretty bad that she was beaten by a spinel. Spinel smiled to herself feeling a small brief moment of triumph. Who would have thought that Spinel would have fend off let alone defeat a strong quartz soldier like Jasper. The thought of beating that gem made the small pink gem stand tall and proud. She didn’t need to be afraid, Spinel matched right out of the room with a brave smile on her face. If she managed to defeat a quartz solder than she could handle anything that was thrown her way.
She was a rough, tough gal and even if she didn’t have a Diamond Spinel would try to make the most of it. Yet...it did hurt a lot. She was loyal to Pink Diamond for such a long time and now that she was gone Spinel had no one and the small pink gem refused to go to that other pink diamond, the one who had taken her away from Spinel. Spinel didn’t nor want to fathom what it would be like to serve another diamond. No, she never wanted to entertain anyone else other than her diamond. Spinel sighed and looked around as a couple of gems happily chatted about the invitations they received.
“Can you believe it! I can’t wait till we get to go.” One of the peridots said.
“No kidding, ai hear only the higher ranked gems are allowed inside.” A bismuth said,
The small gem watched the two other gems go by and Spinel shrugged and passed by them both, Spinel glanced around and could see a lot of gems were receiving these invitations.
Was the ball really that big of a deal? Spinel had no idea but every gem who got one seemed to be pretty happy. Spinel shuttered remembering her nightmare. The biting, the blood. Oh stars the blood. Spinel whimpered, not wanting to think about any of that. Then there came a thought. Would she be getting one as well? Spinel thought about it but shook her head. No that couldn’t be right, she was a Spinel not even a good one considering that Pink abandoned her. Spinel sniffed as she whipped her wet eyes. How funny a silly spinel going to a ball. No, that wouldn’t happen if a zircon hardly knew who she was than no one probably knew who she was.
So getting an invitation seemed less than likely. It both relieved and saddened Spinel but the scary dream of the dreaded bloody ball kept Spinel feeling more relieved than sad. She stared as the other gems chatted and talked about the ball that would be held by one of the diamonds. Spinel took the time to walk around and explore more of Homeworld. She saw so many gems with said invitations and saw how happy they were. Spinel however didn’t pay much attention as the urge to try and make new friends and wanting to play seemed to dominate most of her thoughts.
Spinel could see a couple of lapis gems flying freely above her chatting about the ball while holding some decorations in her hands. Everyone seemed to be talking about it, guess this suppose ball was a huge deal after all. Spinel sighed but watched as some aquamarines fluttered around holding some more decorations and streamers that were of different color.
Spinel turned to glance around and caught sight of a pyrope, those gems were of high class and besides the red gem was….a jade. Spinel shuttered at the reminder of the jades in her nightmare and began walking up to them, the strange feeling of anxiety come prickling yo her back somehow. Despite being s gem who was made for people to have fun and enjoy she hadn’t had much luck of making a lot of friends especially when being with Pink Diamond and left alone for six thousand years wasn’t good for her either. She felt terribly shy but she couldn’t help but approach them.
