“…the normal numbers of those things…Oh, forget the megalomaniacal speech! Dregs, attack!”
The massive multi-headed skaab shook his head at Geralf, but ultimately obliged the stitcher by lashing out with several arms. One of the gangly limbs scored a direct hit on Sigarda’s wing, just before the archangel could deal a finishing blow to the monster with her scythe. The seraph fell from the sky and tumbled to a stop a fair distance away from Dregs and his master.
“Excellent work, Dregs!” Geralf laughed. “I knew the armor grafts on the hands would come in handy!”
While Dregs rolled three pairs of eyes, Sigarda dragged herself to her feet. Before she could charge back into the fray, however, she felt a gloved hand grip her shoulder. Looking behind her, she saw a small force of cathars, all heavily armed and ready for action.
“We can take it from here, Lady Sigarda.”
Sigarda waved dismissively at the soldiers. “No, Thalia. This is my fight. Not yours. I have to stop that thing.”
The lead cathar shook her head as she smirked at her angelic patron. “What does it matter who gets the kill? I thought angels were supposed to be above all that ‘fighting for glory’ stuff.”
“…We’re supposed to be above fear, too.”
Sigarda grimaced up at Dregs’s heads. Thalia again gave Sigarda’s shoulder a comforting pat.
“All the more reason to let us take the lead. We’ll get it done.”
Sigarda gave the monster one last look, then turned back to nod to the other woman.
“If you start getting overwhelmed - at all - fall back and let me take him.”
“I promise, it’ll be no trouble. All right, troop! Let’s go!”
Thalia’s cathars charged forward with heavy axes and greatswords. They easily weaved between Dregs’s clumsy strikes and stomps, and were soon hacking away at the rotting flesh on his legs. The skaab fell to the earth with a rumbling crash, and Geralf uttered a final curse before retreating.
“Thank you,” Sigarda muttered.
“Again,” chimed Thalia, “it was no trouble!”
“Thank you…”

The Lore of Innistrad: Midnight Hunt - Gisa, Glorious Resurrector
Tumblr media
“Gisa Cecani is one of the most powerful ghoulcallers on Innistrad. She maintains a friendly rivalry with her brother, the stitcher Geralf, that technically meets one or two aspects of the definition of the word ‘friendly.’
In the battle at the end of The Travails, the planeswalker Liliana Vess raised a massive zombie army to fight Emrakul's horde. Fortunately, her undead servants helped turn the tide. Unfortunately, her zombies still roam the ruins of the holy city of Thraben. Gisa has moved into the abandoned city, treating it as her own personal undead playground. Stationing herself out of a rather lavish priest's quarters in the Cathedral of Avacyn, Gisa now does whatever she wants—but she still makes time to send death threats to her brother. Family is important to her.”

”I think your friend might be dangerous.” Yuuto

Tumblr media
"Friend is a long stretch. Not the word I would use." Liliana's nose scrunches up a hint at the so very offensive word. No, the ghoulcaller Gisa was no where near the level of trust that would earn her camaraderie. They were not buddies, not pals. Allies perhaps. If anything Liliana merely liked to stir the pot of shit between the younger woman and her stitcher of a brother, Geralf. Free entertainment at the cost of innocent lives (and taking resources Lili herself could use).
There's a nonchalant shrug followed by a dismissive wave. "Gisa is strong, yes. One of the more notorious ghoulcallers on this plane." Powerful Gisa might be, yet neither her nor her brother (or any other necromancer on Innistrad) could ever compare. "What makes her dangerous, or anyone really, is the mind. Her ambition, her determination...that's what really should be worrying. Of course her magical prowess shouldn't be underestimated."
A ghost of a smirk starts to tug at painted lips, a gleam of mischief twinkles in amethyst eyes. "Are you considering starting a confrontation with her?" There's a hint of giddiness in her tone. "If so I want a front row seat."

Here’s our MTGinktober for “Knot // Disturb,” starring Gisa and Geralf. That's what you get for trying to operate on a skaab out in the open on Innistrad, I guess.

Some days, it seems strange to me that Gisa and Geralf are classed as antagonists, as they’re far too ineffectual to be proper antagonists, really, and just look at what they were doing in EMN as well.
Then I remember the siege on Thraben happened and the fact that they were even story villains in The Cursed Blade. Whoops.

To my dearest brother: Since you seem so hell-bent on continuing your beastly experiments with your ghastly skaaberen, and your equally horrendous new playmate Ludevic, I have decided to leave you with a challenge and a gift. The challenge is to make a skaab using only the contents of the gift. The gift is 27 femurs and a stapes. I WILL NOT BE IGNORED!!! Signed, your loving sister, Gisa

“Grrrr-”
“Playing dumb may fool the living, Slawomir, but not me.”
The undead captain stared through the other zombie who had berated it. After a brief standoff, it gave an annoyed grunt, and straightened its posture somewhat before speaking again.
“Shauntal…” it groaned to the other ghoul, while gesturing to the small army of undead behind it. “Help us…”
The undead surgeon angrily ruffled her smock and hissed, “Help you? Or help your ghoulcaller?”
“Urgh…help me…help Gisa.”
“I refuse to help that madwoman.”
“B-Brought me back…”
“So? You don’t see me bending over backwards to help Geralf, any more than he absolutely needs me to!”
“Er…?”
Slawomir pointed with a rotting finger to the cart of various body parts that Shauntal was currently rummaging through. The zombie surgeon removed a severed head from the cart, and gently blew on its face before saying, “Oh no, these are for my own personal use. I’ve learned quite a bit about stitching from training under Geralf - but I still don’t worship the ground he walks on!”
“Fair…enough,” Slawomir shrugged. “…Training?”
“Yes. Doctor training. I was a…” Shauntal gave an annoyed huff. “Well, I was studying to be a doctor at the Nephalia Academy, anyways, before I died. And to answer the question I know you’re about to ask: no thank you, I still do not need or want any soldier training. And didn’t we just talk about this, not going above and beyond?”
Slawomir gave Shauntal a grin of decayed teeth. “You’re…friend. Not above…beyond…”
“Friend?” Shauntal’s eyes widened. “I see. Er, thank you. But, I will still refuse…if that’s all right?”
Slawomir made a show of shaking the rusted sword and scabbard hanging from its belt. “Defend…self,” it smirked.
“Please,” Shauntal scoffed, though she was smiling as well. “Unlike some necromancers, Geralf doesn’t force me to wade into combat!”
“…Thraben.”
“T-That was one time! And I’m still convinced Gisa was coercing him!”
“R-Riiight,” Slawomir rasped, its face frozen in a smile.

[Just an observation, but Geralf and the other stitchers seem to take wayyy better care of their zombies than Gisa and the other ghoulcallers.]

The Lore of Innistrad: Crimson Vow - Geralf, Visionary Stitcher
Tumblr media
“Geralf Cecani is a talented stitcher locked in eternal rivalry with his older sister, Gisa. Of course, if you ask him, the whole situation is entirely beneath him, and his sister's pitiable actions barely deserve his inevitable retaliation. In recent years, Geralf has been studying under the master necro-alchemist Ludevic in an effort to improve his craft. Ludevic's lab has proven to be a veritable playground, and Geralf's skills have progressed at an impressive pace.
Although Ludevic has recently been acting erratically, Geralf has paid him no mind. He is fully dedicated to improving his craft (with the occasional detour to torment his sibling).”
